203 - Cordan James Haveron: "The Comeback Kid"

203 - Cordan James Haveron: "The Comeback Kid"

Some people called Cordan James a “crack baby,” a negative label he’s learned to reframe.

Cordan is a fighter. As the only black person in a rural community, he fought to belong. As a young man, he also fought to fit in… and sometimes to stand out. He spent his life in the Foster Care system.

He had beautiful relationships with adoptive family and friends, and he experienced boldfaced racial discrimination and stereotyping. But Cordan never stopped fighting to discover who he was.

He joined the US military, where he became a leader, and he was later reunited with his birth family. Through all the challenges, Cordan never stopped fighting. He’s a living example of the kind of resilience that only shows up in a life beset by extraordinary challenges.

And that’s why they call him “The Comeback Kid."

Cordan’s voice, life, and mission are all about giving children hope. Hope for a brighter future, and the tools to see their life in new ways… today. For adults like Cordan who have a traumatic story, Cordan’s life and message show that it’s never too late to manifest the fearless imaginings of their childhood.

Cordan James Haveron is a motivational speaker, life coach, and the founder of The Comeback Kid Mentorship Program. Influenced by the WhyTry Program, he uses WhyTry today to support biological and adoptive families, veterans, and mental health professionals.

She has lived in and visited over 50 countries in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, including her deployment with the United States Navy in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to Al Asad, Iraq where she took care of the smiles of over 25,000 active duty, contractors and Iraqi security forces.

While in residency she competed and won the title Ms. Texas, followed by Ms. United States 2012 and Ms. Galaxy 2014. 022 Owen Cardwell - The Hero's Journey

022 Owen Cardwell - The Hero's Journey

On Jan. 29, 1962, Cardwell, now a professor at the University of Lynchburg, and Lynda Woodruff became the first black students to attend Glass. At that time, Glass had been an all-white school, and black students had attended Dunbar High School. It had snowed all day long the day before that historic Monday, Cardwell recalled, but school had not been canceled.

That day, Cardwell said, the doors of Glass that had been closed to black students were opened, but only a crack.

“Don’t think for a moment, however, that the crack was easy to enter,” Cardwell said. “Nor that those who guarded the door made the passage smooth.”

He was suspended from Glass during his senior year for leading a student walkout. Cardwell was one of four black students in his graduating class of about 650. Cardwell said school segregation and inferior educational opportunities harmed black students even decades after the landmark 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education case was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

010 Kemy Joseph: Servant Leadership

Kemy Joseph, MS, EdS, MBE

As founder of F.E.A.R.S. Advantage™, Kemy trains people to Transcend Prejudice by flipping the script on their privilege to unite and serve others, regardless of their skin color.

Most people see Kemy’s bright smile, but wouldn’t imagine the hardships behind it. Being raised in Miami, FL as a first generation Haitian American, he lived in a single-parent household with nine siblings where poverty, violence and racial inequity traumatized him at an early age.

Growing up, he was socialized as a sexist, racist, homophobe, bigot, bully and criminal.

As an adult he’s had the amazing privilege to re-socialize himself into a human being -- a healthy, educated black man who respects women, celebrates diversity, and supports the equal rights of all people. His journey represents the healing that’s possible when we use negative emotions for positive change.

Kemy dreams of creating a world where we rise above segregation, hatred and violence to heal our past traumas and free ourselves from suffering. In service to that vision, he works with hundreds of leaders in business and education -- in addition to many Nobel Peace Prize Winners -- to inspire global social justice initiatives.

009 Judge Teske: Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline

009 Judge Teske: Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline

Judge Teske watched black kids enter his court day in and day out. He saw them enter shackled, shuffling across the floor to be judged. One day, as a youth offender's grandmother approached him in tears, grateful for her grandson's release, he couldn't take it any more. Judge Teske realized the pain these shackles must create for people still traumatized by slavery.

So Judge Teske drafted an order banning the use of shackles or restraints unless it could be shown by evidence that having no restraints would place the safety of others at risk.

Judge Steven Teske has been reforming the juvenile justice system for over two decades. Through what became known as "The Teske Model," he reduced juvenile detention rates by over 60% in the state of Georgia. Rather than pushing students out of school, the Teske Model provides a framework to keep kids in school by pressing pause and asking why the student is having the issue. Judge Teske's model has been successfully adopted in 42 US States.
