Ep 7 - Leadership Lessons for Contemporary Times

Ep 7 - Leadership Lessons for Contemporary Times

One of the most respected business speakers in the country, Francis Kong has been featured in many leadership conferences both here and abroad. He was a recipient of The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Award in 2014. He is also a columnist. His column at the Philippine Star was awarded as the best business column for multiple years. Among his many recognitions include the Hall of Fame Award by the Catholic Mass Media Awards, Anvil Award for Excellence for the Dr. John Maxwell Seminar Series, Gold Quill Award for Best Public Speech category given by the International Association Business Communicators, Top 100 Filipinos on LinkedIn Hall of Fame Award, and Top 1 in the inaugural Philippines’ Top 30 Leaders on LinkedIn 2022.

As an experienced entrepreneur, he is well-versed in the field of manufacturing and retail. He ran a famous garment brand successfully for 17 years. He is currently the President of Success Options Inc. and Success Options Publishing Company, Inc. As a business consultant, he is an adviser to many of the country’s top business corporations. As a personal coach, he has mentored many of the top business leaders in the country.

As a broadcaster, he has an award-winning radio program called business matters at DZFE-FM 98.7. As a speaker and trainer, he averages more than 300 talks, seminars, and training both here and abroad yearly. Finally, he is a best-selling author of multiple books.

Challenges will always be there whether you are holding responsible positions of leadership or not, Francis said. It’s just that when you’re in a position of responsibility, your challenges seem to be bigger. He said every time he finds himself in the middle of something very challenging, he always considers these two things: First, “Is this something within my control? Or “Is this something outside my control?” The mind has to operate fast to get to the reality of assessing the situation. Second, “Is this the result of something stupid that I have done?” The response to these questions requires different skill sets and mindsets. If it’s something beyond his control as the Covid 19, he will just manage it. If it’s a result of a wrong decision, he’s going to look back, accept it, own it, face it, deal with the consequences and then move on to becoming a better and wiser person.

Ian asked him about his thoughts on the Great Resignation and Quiet Quitting phenomena. "I’m never for quiet quitting. If you do just the bare minimum kumbaga sa test, you’re pasang-awa", Francis replied. He added by saying, "The reality of things is that the Great Resignation in the West is now giving way to the Great Regret to the same. That they themselves had to let go of a lot of people. He said 400 brick and mortar stores had to close so they had to do it. Letting go of people is a very hard thing to swallow."

He then went on and described balance. If you go deep down on the meaning, balance means equilibrium. What is 50% life and 50% work? You will never arrive at a position wherein you become an expert in something.

He closed by encouraging people to take part in leveling up the leadership, mentoring and helping people widen their reach so more people can be helped.

Ep 6 - Leading With Life Purpose Throughout Change

Ep 6 - Leading With Life Purpose Throughout Change

Boris Joaquin is one of the country's top-ranked public speakers and trainers for leadership programs and other soft skills. He is a seasoned management and marketing professional, being involved in various industries both from multinationals to locally owned enterprises for more than two decades now.

Presently, he is the President and CEO of Breakthrough Leadership Management Consultancy, Inc. (the company behind Salt & Light Ventures). He is also the Master Trainer and Country Representative of the Lead Like Jesus Training Program (a program designed by Ken Blanchard) and the founder of Project Purpose Philippines.

Boris also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for Family First Philippines, and The Bible League Philippines. Because of his practice of leadership gifts through these humanitarian involvements, the University of Santo Tomas bestowed upon him the distinguished Manuel L. Quezon Leadership Award for two consecutive years.

He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the People Manager Magazine, the official publication of the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP), and contributes regularly to the career/lifestyle section of Rappler.com. He is the author of the best-selling book, Practical Wisdom to be Happy at Work and used to write a regular column for PhilStar.com and Inquirer Libre.

Nobody really knows any best practices towards what we’ve experienced during the global health crisis. But as a change management consultant, Boris always talked about the dynamics of change and living in a VUCA world. He said he needed to put all these principles into practice in the last two years.

One of the things that he learned was ADAPTABILITY— the ability to adapt. He mentioned that in 2018 even before the pandemic hit, he read a report that said, “Technology is on an uphill trend”. It’s so fast that humans can't catch up. Without a doubt, we needed to upskill in so many ways.

He added that AQ is the new EQ. Everyone needs an Adaptability Quotient to succeed. He also said that anybody can adapt, anybody can pivot and anybody can recalibrate. It is really how you react and acknowledge the reaction and pull back that matters. It is acknowledging and managing the current situation, not devalidating it. It’s having an open mind and being innovative.

Agility comes to play. You ask yourself these questions now: How do you not procrastinate? How do you pivot as fast as possible?

Change can disrupt us. It could make us feel awkward, anxious, afraid, and angry. But if you can accept that and navigate, you’ll be able to survive and thrive.

He shared how he navigated Breakthrough Leadership in what we call “the new normal”. Breakthrough Leadership is a learning service provider. They earn millions from one of their biggest products — event conferencing.

Boris ended on this note: “You can’t really lead unless you learn.” Leaders are learners. The gap between learning and doing is significantly greater than the gap between ignorance and knowledge. The more leaders address this gap, the more transformation they will see in the lives of others.

Ep 5 - Standing Out in Times of Crisis and Opportunity

Ep 5 - Standing Out in Times of Crisis and Opportunity

Paulo Tibig is one of the most celebrated Filipino motivational speakers in the Philippines today. He is renowned for his “Learnjoyment” brand of keynotes and workshops.

He is a real corporate/business practitioner with solid on-the-ground experience in managing companies and businesses such as the award-winning V Cargo Worldwide and Paulo Tibig Corporate Trainings for more than two decades, making him relevant and in touch with the real workplace conditions that many see as his competitive advantage.

He is the bestselling author of the book “Strategies of a Champion Entrepreneur” and the recently released “STANDOUT: How to Lead Without Losing Your Values”. He is also a go-to regular resource person on national TV, radio shows, and programs.

Very recently, Paulo was part of the Inaugural Philippines' Top 30 Leaders on LinkedIn.

When Paulo started V Cargo, they knew very well that it was going to be challenging. The industry they were getting into was dominated by multinational players. The competition was tight, so what they did was create services and solutions that will make them stand out. They wanted to be resilient. At that time, they had two options — resist or absorb what was happening in the industry. They chose the latter! It wasn't a piece of cake. There were a lot of struggles — financial, operational, and more. Competing head-on wasn’t the best course of action.

Then, the pandemic hit! Paulo learned that "We are like coffee beans. When we are dipped in hot water, we know exactly how strong and intense we are. Similarly, as an individual or organization when we are faced with problems and uncertain situations, we can see what the true character of a certain individual is.” All these prepared them to grow and thrive. Had they resisted, they could have not won and thrived.

How did he make his company stay strong? How did he, himself, become strong?

According to Paulo, even before the pandemic happened, they already knew what their market was. They had already developed some flagship products/services — logistics marketing services. They understood the pain point of the market well. They took into account the competition and the opportunities. Paulo says that in every crisis, there's a business opportunity. Focusing on the peculiar need of the times is the resilient strategy he employed 22 years ago, and has continued to evolve and work until now.

Ian found it very interesting since he's also in the FMCG industry. He mentioned V Cargo worldwide being awarded by Philippine Airlines recently the Diamond Awardee Partner, the highest award.

How was he able to win an award in the midst of the pandemic? How did he keep his employees engaged?

Paulo also emphasized paying attention to culture. He shared the mindset, which is also their famous #dugongponkan. The culture that they want to embrace. Be the orange among the apples. The secret sauce of V Cargo. He explained that the principle behind this idea is if you try to compete based on the same platform, pricing model, and operational model, you won’t win. There's a need to stand out. Create your own market space.

He ended with his note, “The world needs ethical leaders.” Take the opportunity to be with people and see how you can lead and help them.

Ep 4 - 3Rs: Resilience for Recovery and Rebuild (Part 2)

Dean Pax (PhD) specializes in strategic planning, management, local & regional business development, enterprise start-up, growth, financial wellness, and family business expansion. He is the Dean of Entrepreneurship/Platinum Circle of Bo Sanchez’s Truly Rich Club and a lead advocate and AMEN Pioneer mentor of Go Negosyo. He is also a former adjunct faculty on Entrepreneurship at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).

At present, he is the Chairman of SPAC Information Technology Inc., a company that provides IT business solutions and systems developers augmentation in the US. He is also a director of the CARAGA Renewable Energy Corporation, a multi-billion-peso power plant venture in Mindanao.

He is also a best-selling author of five books:

➤ How to Turn Your Passion into Profit: 8 Keys to Build a Truly Rich Business
➤ Go Negosyo: 21 Hakbang sa Pagsisimula ng Sarili Mong Negosyo
➤ Go Negosyo: 21 Steps on How to Start Your Own Business
➤ Be Happy, Healthy, and Wealthy Today: How to Be Richer with Life Lessons from the Teacher and the Preacher

In this episode, Dean shares that he sets two objectives whenever he mentors leaders: survival and growth. Why? Because these are the outcomes of a resilient leader. Survival because it’s business continuity and growth because it’s recovery and business advantage.

He highlighted that the one who will survive the new normal and uncertainty is not the smartest, not the strongest but the one most responsive to change.

You have to figure things out, in real-time, under stress. That is what crisis leadership is. You have to turn Volatility to Vision, Uncertainty to Understanding, Complexity to Clarity and Ambiguity to Agility.  When former Pres. Duterte declared the pandemic in March, Dean researched the Model of Business Continuity and Growth Mindset. He found and attended a program by Harvard Business School called “Coping with Sudden Changes in Cash Needs and Availability”.

One must have a growth mindset in order to succeed. Success is all about fears, the risks that you take, your self-doubts, rejections, and failures. Self-discipline is doing the things you need to do even when you don’t feel like doing it.

He also emphasized the difference between mastery and mastering. Mastery will take you a period or season while mastering will take you a lifetime because of a reason.

Redefine the depth of growth between goals, responses, effort, strategies and results. Growth always starts with you. Growth is up to you. Resilience in Leadership is like a road that’s got a lot of pessimists — it could even be your close friends, relatives, and society. You have to hurdle to get to your goals.

Whatever you seek, you have to size then seize it. Act with determination and purpose to achieve your results. Begin with your end goal in mind. Dedicate a high level of energy to make things happen. Take the initiative and action quickly. Build and maintain networks. Stay focused on priorities and avoid distractions. Be persistent and recover well from setbacks.

Ep 3 - Building a Solid Team with Strong Values and Compassion

Ep 3 - Building a Solid Team with Strong Values and Compassion

Reese Fernandez-Ruiz is a former client of Anda who has built a social enterprise that creates bags, home items, and clothes with the help of the women in Payatas. She’s a multi-awarded leader that has helped alleviate poverty in Payatas through the jobs provided by Rags2Riches.

Reese ventured off relatively inexperienced in the workplace. She was a fresh graduate whose learnings came mostly from her professors, mentors, and group works. She has come a long way to where she is today. As a Millennial, she knows that the younger generation looks for their passion and purpose in life. She knows the importance of knowing her purpose which serves as her guiding principle as a leader and has been unapologetic in expressing that to others.

"Values cannot be just notes on a wall, or it becomes just white noise over time." Reese makes sure that the values they preach are not just words, but something integrated and operationalized in the workplace. It has to be practiced every day, which helps with habit-building.

One of the most important values that Reese instills in her team is gratefulness by starting meetings with a short sharing of things that the team is grateful for, which sets the tone for the day. Anda notes the intentionality of starting the day with this by setting the gratefulness mindset for the people.

Another one that R2R embodies is to start with what they already have. "This practice encourages being resourceful as looking for materials beyond what they have is a struggle", Anda chimes. Reese continues to say, "The limitation is not a constraint for them, but a jump off point to be more creative. Not having any resources won’t stop R2R."

Earlier in her career, Reese admits that communication was not something that she was fond of doing. Over time with experience, she has come to realize that although it might be the unsexy part of being a leader, it is her purpose to be able to communicate properly to her team. Difficult times challenge these values and practicing them is even harder, but it is during these times that make these values more important to do.

Perspective is an important aspect of remembering the purpose. Reese shares that she has turned to journaling so she can look back and reflect on her journey. This makes it feel like she’s conversing with her past self and giving her future self a different lens.

Leadership can be lonely and isolating. Reese has had the benefit of having a partner who’s a leader himself that she can bounce off of. Despite this, some things can't be outright communicated. As the leader, it is within my responsibility to facilitate and navigate a company. Having a coach helps process the raw thoughts and emotions before communicating. Finding the right coach is as important as finding the right life partner.

The most important quality is compassion because it makes one empathetic and transparent. These are important to being a leader because it makes one decide what's best for everyone and not as an ego boost. Compassion is having humility as well.

Ep 2 - Coping with Major Challenges Using 10 Leadership Tools and 4 Interdependencies To Be More Resilient

Ep 2 - Coping with Major Challenges Using 10 Leadership Tools and 4 Interdependencies To Be More Resilient

Josiah Go wears multiple hats as the Chairman and Chief Innovation Strategist for Mansmith & Fielders, Inc., and Chairman of Waters Philippines. He's also the Chairman of over a dozen companies. He's widely known as a respected marketing guru, having been awarded one of the Agora Awardees of 1994, one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines (TOYM) in 2001,  Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) in the World in 2002 - the first and only Filipino in Business Education given by the World JCI in a competition among 1000 TOYMs,  and one of only two Lifetime Achievement Awardees by the Association of Marketing Educators.

During the pandemic, Josiah studied 45 companies in 17 countries, which validated his beliefs on resilience. He mentioned four interdependent strengths that can help one cope with challenges - social, cultural, physical, and mental strengths. He further explains resiliency as having a growth mindset to confront adversity and having the ability to step back and look at the bigger picture.

Josiah mentions Dr. Steven Southwick and Dr. Dennis Charney, multi-awarded researchers and doctors. Through studying their material, he found that resilience starts with the decision to want to be alive and face challenges. He emphasizes the need to know and have role models that one would want to emulate, making one more resilient.

Recalling Social strength, Josiah highlights the importance of having support groups. It is this system of support that one turns to for encouragement and perspective. Rounding off the strengths is well-being and good health. Physical exercise helps build health, and in turn, one's resiliency.

Ian implores Josiah to share his experiences of resilience which the latter obliges by sharing the humble beginnings of Mansmith & Builders. Josiah takes us back 32 years in the past when he was still a professor in Ateneo and had just bought a bankrupt company to now one of the most successful training and consulting companies. Another one of Josiah's companies, Waters Philippines, the largest distributor of mineral pot water in Asia, experienced a crisis early on which forced the company to reinvent its business model. This particular experience also influenced Josiah's teaching of business models.

Beyond resilience, Ian asks Josiah what other teachings and learnings can he share. "Preparation is essential" quickly remarked Josiah. He expounds further on its importance by highlighting the loss of time when one is unprepared. To save time, one must learn to anticipate any challenges that may come.

Another anecdote shared by Josiah is the importance of having multiple revenue streams. Ian chimes in and compares this to an employee losing his job and having to wonder what would happen next with the source of income gone.

Ian closes by sharing being part of Mansmith & Fielders through Sensei Business Academy where he was mentored by Josiah. He exclaims that this experience made him decide to have Josiah as the first guest of the podcast.

Ep 1 - Defining Resilience and Navigating Adversity Effectively

Ep 1 - Defining Resilience and Navigating Adversity Effectively

Resilience is a BIG word. For Ian, resilience is the ability to get yourself out of a hole and how to pick yourself up. Anda reflects on resilience as facing a hurricane and pushing through to the eye of the storm to calm and collect oneself to be able to keep pushing forward.

Ian relates this to his experience with his team when he had an increase in the number of meetings being held since the start of the pandemic. He reminds the team to take a short breather in between meetings to collect themselves. "A five minute walk can do wonders," Ian says.

As a leader and a parent, the challenge is doubled as you do not only need to be on the lookout for your team but also have to make sure that your family's needs are attended to. Ian elaborates by saying that a leader should set an example of being resilient for the people around them to have a model to emulate.

Anda recalls Ian's thoughts on having a collective experience of the mind, body, and spirit. It is not only one's well-being, but the well-being of the team, and family around you.

“You're still in denial, huh?” Ian joked as Anda recollects the onset of the pandemic where it took her quite some time to accept and adapt to the changes in her everyday life. Anda explains that this experience brought her to the realization that she needs to learn, unlearn, and relearn things. Ian shares how he and his leadership team learned to keep everything within working hours and days - making sure to spend quality time with friends and families over the weekend.

Anda continues off on Ian's thoughts and shares one of the things she does in coaching is mindful calendars - taking a look at the week ahead and seeing if there is a balance of working hours and quality time at home.

The increase in meetings scheduled during lunch time has been normalized during the pandemic, but Ian shares that his team has made sure to block this off which forces one to have lunch with family. "It's setting boundaries between work and life", he says.

Ian adds another tip to break out of the burnout cycle. Instead of taking long vacations after 4-6 months straight and coming back to do the same cycle, take more long weekend breaks or in-between breaks to make sure that you don't reach that burnout state. Anda bounces off on this and adds that burnout affects the ability to be resilient because one focuses on the feeling of burnout itself.

“It's about better choices, more deliberate choices that will help us”, Anda emphasizes the need to choose the things that you can control. She adds that this is one of the things she includes in her coaching sessions, which admittedly she herself sometimes does not apply. Choosing what you can control puts one in a position of empowerment, being able to move forward with what they can.
