Eliminate Restraint, Seclusion, Suspension, Expulsion, & Corporal Punishment: A Conversation with Guy Stephens

Eliminate Restraint, Seclusion, Suspension, Expulsion, & Corporal Punishment: A Conversation with Guy Stephens

"Even if things have happened like this to your child, the adult was doing what they were trained to do; what they were told to do; what they believed they needed to do. And quite frankly, if you don't know another solution, it just doesn't exist."

Join Rebecca and Ginger as they sit down with Guy Stephens, the founder and executive director of the Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint (AASR). Today we talk about doing exactly what the title says: eliminating all use of restraint, seclusion, suspension, expulsion, & corporal punishment in schools. Do you find yourself frowning and/or questioning a little about this idea?

Then this episode is for you!

AASR is a non-profit community of over 25,000 parents, self-advocates, teachers, school administrators, paraprofessionals, attorneys, related service providers, and others working together to influence change in supporting children whose behaviors are often misunderstood. Guy Stephens is a national expert on the issue of restraint and seclusion.

The power of creating your own high-functioning team: Tamara Lindholm

The power of creating your own high-functioning team: Tamara Lindholm

“What energy shows up for you when you’re not under stress and how does that change for you when you are under stress?” Ginger and Rebecca get the chance to sit down with Tamara Lindholm to talk with her about the impact that INspired Leadership has had on people who are trying their best to show up every day. And how does this impact our work in the trauma/resilience movement?

Chad Higgins: Leadership and Organizational Growth in Uncertain Times with Rebecca and Ginger

Chad Higgins: Leadership and Organizational Growth in Uncertain Times with Rebecca and Ginger

Ginger and Rebecca get the chance to sit with Dr. Chad Higgins, the brand new CEO of ESSDACK. We explore the topic of leadership, humility, and personal growth in order to grow those around us into the future.

Chad demonstrates his deep thoughtfulness and introspection as a leader, even as he shares previous stances he’s taken.

We at ESSDACK believe that leadership is an action, not a title. And if you’re a budding leader, this episode is just for you!

EDIT: Chad asked to clarify that when talking about his high school football coach, the coach wasn't a yeller, as the stereotype of "football" coach is. Instead he was quiet, supportive, and just the type of guy to run a program you want to have your kids in. But then in college, Chad had a coach who was quite the opposite whose style was to yell, demoralize, and more. So both of these men influenced Chad's leadership style. He was able to decide how he wanted to show up differently because of the experiences with both of those men.

Information from the Podcast

I am excited to inform you that registration is open for the 2022 Stand Against Racism:

https://www.ywcaneks.org/what-we-do/advocate/challenge/

In addition, I have attached information extending the opportunity to sponsor or partner with YWCA Northeast Kansas in serving the Greater Topeka area on this monumental movement of change.

This year, we are excited to introduce the Stand Against Racism Challenge to help foster a virtual community of growth and learning around social, systemic, and institutional racial inequity. This YWCA USA national initiative, created in partnership with YWCA Greater Cleveland, is designed to create dedicated time and space to build more effective social justice habits, particularly those dealing with race, power, privilege, and leadership. This opportunity is open to anyone and will provide participants with daily challenges such as reading an article, listening to a podcast, reflecting on personal experiences, and so much more.

Participation in this virtual community of growth helps us discover how racial and social injustice impact our community, connect, and identify ways to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination.

We were HONORED to have our dear friend, Ginger Healy with us from Attachment & Trauma Network (ATN)

Ginger Healy received her master’s degree in social work from UNLV in 1999 and began practicing as a licensed clinical social worker in 2001. She has worked as a social worker in the field of child and family services and hospital trauma for several years until she adopted her son from Romania. At that point she started working for Children’s House International Adoption Agency for the next 15 years serving as the social service supervisor. This job taught her so much about attachment and trauma. In 2016 she was awarded The Angels in Adoption Award and met Julie Beem a fellow awardee. She was so impressed that when an opportunity to work for The Attachment and Trauma Network came up she jumped in head first. She is married with four children and her greatest teachers about developmental trauma and special needs have been her children. She hopes to give back to parents in her professional life and through community support. She has been able to lead the Iron County Utah Autism Support Group and serve on the board of Gateway Preparatory Academy. She is honored to be a part the ATN team.
