On this episode of ReSource Potential we talk to one of ReSourceYYC's long time members Sandy McGrath.

Sandy is a 5X Winner of the Top 50 Managed IT companies in Canada (2018-2022). Top 100 award winner for people in technology for DEI. Sandy started as a Tier 2 Network technician for Final Frontiers in 2011. He moved up to Service Coordinator and then Service Manager in 2016. In January of 2018, he assumed the role of Operations Manager and has not looked back.

In this episode Sandy discusses how Final Frontiers sets itself apart from the competitors, and how the company continues to have sustained growth and success. Sandy also discusses some of the emerging trends that he is seeing in IT. One of these being the overall increase in security threats happening in the technology sector and the growing need for strong cybersecurity to protect your business.

A respected public speaker, podcaster, blogger and author, Peter has devoted his career to energy, first as a geophysicist, then as an economist and investment strategist. Peter has written two bestsellers — A Thousand Barrels a Second and The End of Energy Obesity — and in 2020 launched his new project, ⁠energyphile.org⁠, and book, The Investor Visit and Other Stories: Disruption, Denial and Transition in the Energy Business. Passionate about studying how society evolves its energy use and applying lessons of the past to today’s strategic business issues, Peter created Energyphile to encourage people to think about the energy business in a whole new way.

In 2015 Peter was seconded to the four-person Royalty Review Panel for the province of Alberta — the world’s eighth-largest producer of oil and gas — where he led the redesign of the fiscal policy. In 2016 he was inducted into the Alberta Petroleum Hall of Fame and in 2021, he joined the board of Contemporary Calgary, and the Institute of Sustainable Finance Advisory Board.

Peter has an undergraduate degree in Geophysics from the University of Alberta, a graduate degree in Econometrics from the University of Southampton UK, and a Master of Science in Management of Technology from the Sloan School of Management at MIT.

Steve Brierley, MA, CEC, PCC - Founder of Better Human Group  

Steve is focused on creating a space where people can share their stories of how they make the world a better place.  In 2018, Steve founded the Real Leader Development company with a goal of helping leaders be better leaders by helping them learn critical leadership skills.

As part of the business plan, he hosted three leadership conferences in Calgary and Phoenix and heard some incredible stories of leaders that are making a difference by caring about their teams. In 2019, the company direction changed dramatically after one executive coaching session where the person stated, “I wish my leader would be more human”. The next day, Better Human Group was launched.  In 2020, Steve and 4 other co-authors released the first book, Being a Better Human being at Work and Home through Amazon and Chapters. The book contained a list of 100 things people could do to be a better human. Simultaneously, the Better Human Challenge cards, a deck of 52 challenges, was also released. Books were sold in the USA and Canada. In 2021, Being a Better Human Teenager was launched with three co-authors through Amazon and Chapters with books sold in the USA, UK, and Canada. 

The “teenager book” tells the stories of 21 teenagers who are doing things to make the world a better place. It has a list of 101 things teenagers can do to be better humans and it’s also a 30-day journal.  Plans for 2021 include a new book where the Better Human Group will publish, How Dogs Make Us Better Human Beings, and another book where Steve will be the sole author, Leaders Who Care. 2022 the Better Human Group expects to publish and write an additional 4 books that focuses on being a better human being. 

As a lifelong learner, Steve obtained a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University and is a Certified Executive Coach from the Royal Roads University graduate program and is PCC accredited from the International Coach Federation and Director of External Relations on the Board of the Calgary ICF chapter. 

Steve resides in Calgary with his spouse and a son who is pursuing a marketing degree in BC.

Meet Maura Shaftoe QAFP, CCS

After a successful career in the automotive sector, tackling everything from managing a service department to selling and leasing cars, and being a sales manager and sales trainer, Maura shifted her focus and moved into the world of finance. Watching people juggling huge car payments while struggling with debt was a strong motivator,

Starting out, she built tailored insurance solutions for individuals, families and business owners.  Helping them understand and then manage their risk was an approach that worked. Moving from there into financial planning was a logical step. The world of money opened up for Maura when she discovered behavioural finance and became Certified as a Behavioural Cash Flow Specialist.

Maura understands that we have behaviours, beliefs and biases that affect our money decisions. On top of that, we all have Money Stories that we have grown up with that also impact our money relationships. Getting conversations about money into the open is a life goal for Maura. Providing access to knowledge and awareness is key to her message. Guiding people through the process of re-framing their money relationship is rewarding and can help people transform their lives.

Angie Redecopp is the owner of Impact Business Law. She is a corporate & ESG lawyer that is a business & human rights advocate.

Angie Redecopp worked for 10+ years in Calgary with two of Canada’s largest corporate law firms – what is now Norton Rose Fulbright and Borden Ladner Gervais, leaving as partner with BLG in 2011.
