Retro Renegades Pop Culture Power Hour

By Mikey Taylor

Mikey and Cory try to recapture the scraps of their youth from the pop culture wasteland. While sharing their memories of growing up in the 80s and 90s they often embark on off topic tales and complete nonsense, but it always comes full circle peppered with obscure facts gleaned from years of collecting and research, sometimes boarding on obsession. New shows come out each and every Friday.

Season 3 Episode 5: Reality TV

Season 3 Episode 5: Reality TV

These days it seems reality shows are the norm, but where did this trend come from? Why do people think we love to see the drama and bullshit in their every day life? (We totally do by the way) And who in the hell paved the way for Gene Simmons to show us his Family Jewels every week? We're discussing the early days of reality TV this week on The Power Hour... and we talk about clown girls and cocaine bears too.... what else did you expect?

Season 2 Episode 25: The Cola Wars

In the 80s and 90s there was a battle raging right in front of everyone's faces, although many of us didn't realize it. We were treated to amazing commercials, epic taste tests, and unbelievable give aways..... some are even too good to be true. Season 2 Episode 20: Horror Anthologies

Season 2 Episode 20: Horror Anthologies

What can we say.... the last couple months have been crazy busy, but we didn't want to let spooky season pass by without at least one Halloween themed episode, so here it is.

Back in the day we used to get some amazing mash ups with legendary directors teaming up to make anthology films... and these are the most memorable of our yute. You may remember bits and pieces of some of these movies, perhaps a quote or two... but do you know the stories behind the scenes? We take a deep dive into some of our favorite films such as Creepshow, Cat's Eye, Twilight Zone, and even include what we consider to be a modern classic (just because we love it so much) Trick r' Treat. Maybe memories will emerge, maybe you'll discover new favorites... and maybe you'll have a good time. We're talking horror this week.... have a safe and happy Halloween!

Season 2 Episode 19: 80s Sitcoms

Back in the day, there were only 3 channels... and odds are good that at least 2 of them were showing a sitcom on any given evening. The laughter flowed like water, most of the time. This episode we discuss the ones that worked.... and the ones that didn't. We also have a generous helping of Weird Al talk and we listen in as Cory eats a bologna sandwich. All this and more on The Power Hour, we're pretty good and we do our best.

Season 2-Episode 8: Hogan goes to Hollywood

Season 2-Episode 8: Hogan goes to Hollywood

In the 80s Hulk-a-mania was running wild, and Hulk Hogan quickly became a household name, so naturally the next step was for him to start expanding his brand and make some movies. These films range from blockbusters like Rocky 3 and No Holds Barred to utter crap like Mr Nanny and Suburban Commando. This week we cover them all, and talk a bit about how Hulk Hogan parlayed wrestling superstardom into a mediocre acting career.

Season 2-Episode 4: Ernest, Max, Bartles, James, Jocko and Joe Camel

So we admit it..... we didn't have a clue what the hell we were gonna talk about when we hit record. We had an idea, but no solid plan.... so we did what we do best, we started babbling about nothing. Eventually we talk about retro ad campaigns and worked our way into discussing a few celebrities who started out as simple product spokespeople. You will learn everything Wikipedia has to offer on Max Headroom and Ernest P Worrell, and you'll get a crash course in the musical career of one Bruce Willis. Season 2- Episode 3: Ghostbusters

Season 2- Episode 3: Ghostbusters

So... after repeated viewings of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the fellas got all sentimental and wanted to chit chat about the films that started it all. They talk so long in fact that they have to take a potty break, and have to deal with several technical issues that they blame on Gene Simmons. This show is educational.... you'll learn who was originally supposed to portray Gozer, how much cocaine it took to create Slimer, and never be able to watch the films without thinking about pee bags. All this and so much more on this trip through all things Ghostbuster... hope you're ready to dance, because that happens too.

After that, we help each other process the animated films that traumatized us and try to figure out why. Join us as we discuss, among other things, Rambo; Swamp Thing; Police Academy; Hobbits; Last Unicorns; intelligent rats and terrifying owls. I'm pretty sure everyone remembers their very first home video game system. Many times they fall victim to a garage sale, but the lucky few still have these relics from the past hanging out in a box somewhere in their place. This week we are talking about the gaming systems and games of our yute. From simple one button joysticks of the 80s to infrared motion detection controllers of the late 90s, we cover them all right here on the Retro Renegades Pop Culture Hour.

Episode 40: The Jim Henson Series part 3- Jim Henson Productions

This week we continue to celebrate Jim Henson by discussing other cinematic ventures that he was involved in. We start out with some that we aren't that familiar with, so it's kind of a wandering, rambling trip for a few minutes... but things pick up when we get into the more popular Jim Henson Productions. In the second half you are treated to a wandering, rambling review of not only The Dark Crystal, but also the classic film Labyrinth. You won't want to miss what we have deemed the shittiest review of Jim Henson's body of work. Hey.... you remind me of the babe...the babe with the power.... of VOODOO

Episode 39: The Jim Henson Series part 2- The Muppets

Hi ho, and here we go... on to the next (long) chapter of our tribute to the work of Jim Henson. This time we take a super deep dive into all things Muppet. I know that it's hard to believe that a combination of cloth, buttons, ping pong balls, and felt can bring a smile to your face and possibly a tear to your eye... but add the magic of Jim Henson and his crew and their personalities do just that. Join us as we talk Muppet origin, The Muppet Show, Muppet Babies, and the first trio of feature films.... and we throw a few Fraggles and Otters in there for good measure. Join us on this epic journey... if you don't smile at least once we'll refund your admission.

Episode 38: The Jim Henson Series part 1- Sesame Street

Episode 38: The Jim Henson Series part 1- Sesame Street

It goes without saying that everyone who was once a child (and we hope that's everyone) has been affected and influenced by the work of Jim Henson. He was, without a doubt, the greatest puppeteer ever. We are going to take the next few shows to pay tribute to Jim and his many creations. In this episode, we take a trip on down to Sesame Street... and immediately go right off track. We speculate as to why Telly Monster is so damn nervous, we talk about why Oscar changed from orange to green, we try to resolve an irrational fear of number obsessed purple vampires, and we argue about if the ladybug picnic should be charged with arson. We also remember some of the greatest friends that a kid could have and some of the best skits and songs from our childhood. Sesame Street had a huge impact on both of us, and on millions (and millions) of children worldwide. It's a sunny day... sweep those clouds away and join the Retro Renegades as we Follow That Bird to where the air is sweet.... let's head on down to Sesame Street!

Episode 37: The Cartoons That Warped Our Fragile Minds

When most people think of cartoons they think of Saturday mornings and bowls of cereal.... but there was a generation of cartoons that were late night, lewd, crude and just plain old funny. It was humor for the MTV generation, and we loved it. This episode is dedicated to the immature teenager that still lingers in the dark mushy part of our brain. Buckle in as the Retro Renegades discuss all the stupid stuff that used to (and still does) entertain us..... huh huh huh...I said "anus"

Episode 35: Horror Hosts

You may remember struggling through a yawn, sleepily eating popcorn as you waited under a blanket on the couch for that late night monster movie to start. It was always a rewarding triumph if you were able to stay awake for the beginning, even if you were dozing by the opening credits... it still counted! Sometimes you were tuning in for the film, but more often you wanted to see what the horror host was up to. The 80s and 90s were rich in the traditional hosted movie shows, some were locally produced while others were on a larger stage and gained international fame. From local heros to legendary figures we touch on all our favorites in this week's tribute to the folks who stayed up late with us watching scary movies... Here's to the horror hosts!

Episode 33: Horror on TV

We start this episode off with a tribute to a legend and friend that we lost this week, The King of Belts Reggie Parks. Fly high my friend, we'll see you on the other side.

The 80s and 90s were chocked full of great horror shows that we had to beg, plead, and sneak around to watch. Although the selections ranged from mild, family fare to absolutely terrifying, we tuned in weekly to get our fix and disrupt our sleep. This week we talk about all the amazing shows that we couldn't get enough of, as well as discussing some of the movies that spun off of these awesome shows. Nightmares, Monsters, The Cryptkeeper, and so much more from the Darkside of television this week on The Power Hour.
