Retro Renegades Pop Culture Power Hour

By Mikey Taylor
Mikey and Cory try to recapture the scraps of their youth from the pop culture wasteland. While sharing their memories of growing up in the 80s and 90s they often embark on off topic tales and complete nonsense, but it always comes full circle peppered with obscure facts gleaned from years of collecting and research, sometimes boarding on obsession. All this and more on The Power Hour, we're pretty good and we do our best.  Be sure to check out all the great shows on the Electronic Media Collective www.electronicmediacollective.com (yeah, it's a mouthful) Contact us: Voicemail- 669- BE RETRO (669-237-3876) or use the Anchor app. Email- retropowerhour@gmail.com

Season 2-Episode 8: Hogan goes to Hollywood
In the 80s Hulk-a-mania was running wild, and Hulk Hogan quickly became a household name, so naturally the next step was for him to start expanding his brand and make some movies. These films range from blockbusters like Rocky 3 and No Holds Barred to utter crap like Mr Nanny and Suburban Commando. This week we cover them all, and talk a bit about how Hulk Hogan parlayed wrestling superstardom into a mediocre acting career.

This week we continue to celebrate Jim Henson by discussing other cinematic ventures that he was involved in. We start out with some that we aren't that familiar with, so it's kind of a wandering, rambling trip for a few minutes... but things pick up when we get into the more popular Jim Henson Productions. In the second half you are treated to a wandering, rambling review of not only The Dark Crystal, but also the classic film Labyrinth. You won't want to miss what we have deemed the shittiest review of Jim Henson's body of work. Hey.... you remind me of the babe...the babe with the power.... of VOODOO

Episode 38: The Jim Henson Series part 1- Sesame Street
It goes without saying that everyone who was once a child (and we hope that's everyone) has been affected and influenced by the work of Jim Henson. He was, without a doubt, the greatest puppeteer ever. We are going to take the next few shows to pay tribute to Jim and his many creations. In this episode, we take a trip on down to Sesame Street... and immediately go right off track. We speculate as to why Telly Monster is so damn nervous, we talk about why Oscar changed from orange to green, we try to resolve an irrational fear of number obsessed purple vampires, and we argue about if the ladybug picnic should be charged with arson. We also remember some of the greatest friends that a kid could have and some of the best skits and songs from our childhood. Sesame Street had a huge impact on both of us, and on millions (and millions) of children worldwide. When most people think of cartoons they think of Saturday mornings and bowls of cereal.... but there was a generation of cartoons that were late night, lewd, crude and just plain old funny. It was humor for the MTV generation, and we loved it. This episode is dedicated to the immature teenager that still lingers in the dark mushy part of our brain. You may remember struggling through a yawn, sleepily eating popcorn as you waited under a blanket on the couch for that late night monster movie to start. We start this episode off with a tribute to a legend and friend that we lost this week, The King of Belts Reggie Parks. Fly high my friend, we'll see you on the other side.  The 80s and 90s were chocked full of great horror shows that we had to beg, plead, and sneak around to watch. Although the selections ranged from mild, family fare to absolutely terrifying, we tuned in weekly to get our fix and disrupt our sleep. This week we talk about all the amazing shows that we couldn't get enough of, as well as discussing some of the movies that spun off of these awesome shows. After a few commercials we get grungy with the 90s. From Legoon shorts to Air Jordans to Starter jackets, Members Only, and any 80s fashion report worth it's salt has to mention parachute pants. Episode 30: In Memory of the Music
It's been a rough few weeks in the music world. There were several iconic musicians that have passed away lately, so we thought we'd share some memories of those who have passed. We start out paying tribute to Joey Jordison of Slipknot and Dusty Hill of ZZ Top, then we dive into others who are no longer with us... lots of Pantera, Motorhead, GWAR and some surprise hip hop talk sprinkled in. In the end, we decide it's a good idea to just say remember those who are gone, appreciate those who are still with us, and take care of yourself... and each other.  Let us know what you think: Email the show at retropowerhour@gmail.com Call 669-237-3876 and tell us whats on your mind. We tried to stay on topic, we really did. Our goal was to discuss the acting career of Rowdy Roddy Piper, so we spent the first hour talking about everything he did except act. Give us a break, he's one of our favorite wrestlers ever. We eventually get around to talking about his films, and get some very controversial opinions in the process. The moral of this story is Roddy Piper is the man, and you should just put the damn glasses on.  Let us know what you think: Email the show at retropowerhour@gmail.com Call 669-237-3876 and tell us whats on your mind. Episode 28: G.L.O.W: The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling/ Hollywood Jeanne Basone interview
In the mid 80s a new concept in women's wrestling stormed onto the scene and made a lasting impact. No longer were the nameless women's matches used as an added attraction on par with Terrible Ted the wrestling bear, G.L.O.W. developed a program that focused on characters and personality and storytelling. As the first American promotion that had a television show that featured only women wrestling, it paved the way for decades to come and the G.L.O.W. girls were trailblazers that smashed boundaries.  Listen in as Cory and Mikey share some of their early memories of watching G.L.O.W. and then get the stories first had from the original G.L.O.W. girl (that's O.G.G.) "Hollywood" Jeanne Basone. Episode 25: Zombie Films
It's no secret that we love our horror films, but our favorite sub-genre of horror would have to be zombies. Zombies are actually how Mikey and Cory met, but that's a story for another time. This week we give our individual top five zombie flicks from the 80s and 90s and have some behind the scenes talk about the movies that we grew up on. Episode 24: Forgotten Toys
Sometimes the best ideas are only the best until something better comes along. This episode is a tribute to just such things. This week we are discussing toys that for whatever reason have been forgotten in time. Perhaps there were technological advances, perhaps the trends were moving along too fast and they got left behind, or perhaps they just sucked and needed to be taken out in the desert and buried (We're looking at you Atari). In whatever case, join us as we remember Monchichi, Popples, Wuzzles, Rock Lords, the Power Glove and more this week on the Power Hour.  Let us know what you think: Email the show at retropowerhour@gmail.com Call 669-237-3876 and tell us whats on your mind. Episode 22: Fighting Video Games
Video arcades always created a unique social environment with players of all ages and walks of life bonding over their common love of the flickering screens. In 1987 a new element was introduced that started a shift in the types of interaction that players would have. The multi button fighting game allowed players to challenge others head to head and started to take over the turn based video games of the day. In this episode we talk about all the fighting games that we played and spend extra time talking about the big two, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. We discuss in great detail just how big of a train wreck the Street Fighter movie starring Van Damme actually was. All this and so much more right here on this episode of Retro Renegades Pop Culture Power Hour, now with even more Gene Simmons! (thanks Rex!) Episode 21: Shitty Cartoons, were they really that bad?
For every cartoon that we remember fondly, there are dozens more that just didn't hit the mark. The initial topic for this show was to discuss just how shitty some of these ideas were. Only problem is, we sort of fell in love with a couple of the worst ideas.... so we changed gears mid show and discussed a few of our favorite lesser known cartoons. There is a lesson here folks, and when you figure it out please clue us in so we can all learn together.  Let us know what you think: Email the show at retropowerhour@gmail.com Call 669-237-3876 and tell us whats on your mind. Episode 20: Haunted House Films and Th13teen Ghosts
The 80s gave us horror done right. They had the slashers, they had the thrillers, and they had an abundance of haunted house films. We chat about some of the great ghost tales that hit the big screen in the 80s and 90s, as well as some personal paranormal experiences. After a study in the ebbs and flows of the horror genre from the 80s through the 90s and into the 2000s we finally take a dive into one of our favorite haunted house movies, Th13teen Ghosts. As usual we get derailed several times along the way, but in the end we pay tribute to the film that we feel turned the horror genre around and kick started a new generation of ghost stories. For old school horror fans, there is a pretty deep dive into the films and shenanigans of William Castle that you won't want to miss.  Let us know what you think: Email the show at retropowerhour@gmail.com Call 669-237-3876 and tell us whats on your mind. Selling burgers in the 80s must have been easy... all you needed was a catchy song, a memorable catchphrase, and a fun mascot to talk to the kids. In this episode we are talking about all those lovable (and some forgettable) mascots and spokespeople from the fast food empires. Go on a trip with us around Milkshake Mountain, past the French fry bushes, and down the rabbit hole that we stumble into when we are talking about all the ways that fast food was marketed to kids this week on the Retro Renegades Pop Culture Power Hour.  Let us know what you think: Email the show at retropowerhour@gmail.com Call 669-237-3876 and tell us whats on your mind. The  Revenge of the Nerds series was a favorite among the Retro Renegades, but which was better? Cory favors the original for it's raunchy comedy and boundary pushing laughs, while Mikey prefers Nerds in Paradise due to it's familiar feel and scenic setting. Regardless of which side you are on, a viewing of either film will bring back memories of the first time you saw it and is sure to give a laugh or two. Episode 16: Cereal Mascots
Nothing beat a nice big bowl of sugary goodness on a Saturday morning back in the day... but what exactly made you select the cereal you consumed? Sometimes it was fruity flavors or marshmallow content, other times it was the prize in the box, but often times it was a catchy jingle that was heard on an entertaining commercial featuring one of many animated mascots that stuck in your head as you headed down aisle 4 in the grocery store. In this episode we discuss some of our favorite breakfast choices and the history and fun facts about the mascots. Episode 13: The Rise and Fall of the Video Store
Back in the day, things were much simpler. Weekends basically revolved around the video store. Families would gather and watch new releases and friends would hunker down in each other's basements to watch what would become our generation's cult classics, usually unbeknownst to our parents. New releases were an event, old favorites were battled over, and new favorites were discovered on a weekly basis. The video store was the place to be, and then...... Netflix happened. We take a deep dive into the show we all wanted to be on, but realize that there was never a point in either of our lives that we would survive that sort of physicality.
