Episode 10: Jay Ignacio...Realms of Illustrated Fantasy

Filipinos are naturally gifted visual artists, it goes without saying. When it comes to the world of illustration, they’re on a whole different level. Who knew that great comic book companies like Marvel, DC and Image actively sought out these talents over the decades to bring our favorite heroes onto those incredible inked pages? I talk about this world with graphic novel writer, Jay Ignacio, who has teamed up with the legendary illustrator that is Alex Nino on their newest collaboration, “Alandal”. Allow me to get all geekboy in this episode of the podcast, I’m sure you’ll geek out as well. Enjoy! I'd like to thank Instarem for providing me with a Project Grant, to start this new podcast. Episode 09: Ron Muriera...Da Kuya of Komedy

Episode 09: Ron Muriera...Da Kuya of Komedy

How many of us get the chance to tell the story of how our careers began for us, let alone get the opportunity to brag about the individuals responsible in-part for leading us onto the path we are on to this day? In this episode of the podcast, I have the honor of introducing you all to the one man that helped me along when those early days of comedy were never friendly to young brown brothers like myself. This is my big brother in comedy, Ron Muriera. He’s my Kuya of Komedy! We get to bring back the 1980’s and 90’s in San Francisco, a time that incubated the earliest days of Asian American comedy and allowed me to pioneer this form of standup now known as Filipino American standup. It’s all here in this historic episode to set the record straight. Ever wanted to know the origins of “SBC Packers Worldwide”? Wanna know how Filipino American History Month came to be? You’ll hear it here. Ron is truly a pioneer himself and continues to do so in community arts programs and Fil-Am empowerment movements which are now so very mainstreamed, after so many decades in the making. Filipino American History Month would not be complete without sharing this brother’s story with you kababayans. Enjoy! Episode 08: Janet Stickmon...Blackapina & Proud!

Episode 08: Janet Stickmon...Blackapina & Proud!

There was so much we covered in this deep conversation we had about parenting, the pandemic, self-care and anti-blackness amongst Filipinos. My guest is Janet Stickmon, a longtime voice of conscience inside the Fil-Am sphere of things. She’s the child of an African American father and Filipina mother from Cebu. Her career in education and Ethnic Studies has given us her novels, “Crushing Soft Rubies-a Memoir”, “Midnight Peaches” and her latest “To Black Parents Visiting Earth”. She is currently a professor of humanities, specializing in Ethnic Studies, and faculty coordinator of the Cultural Center at Napa Valley College. She is currently part of a community dialogue called, Tatlong Bagsak, which directly addressed the anti-blackness within the Filipino American community. You can join in the discussion at www.tatlongbagsak.org. I hope she continues to change the game of our own politics for the better and comes up with an even better recipe for British doughnuts. Enjoy our talk. Music by DJ Qbert. I'd like to thank Instarem for providing me with a Project Grant, to start this new podcast. Episode 07: Dante Basco...An Actor’s Journey (Part Two)

Episode 07: Dante Basco...An Actor’s Journey (Part Two)

Rufio. Yes, that Rufio from “Hook”. When I first saw that movie, I knew that kid who played that role had to be Pinoy. Then it was confirmed, he was Pinoy. Dante Basco burst into our psyches with that unforgettable role in that Steven Spielberg movie with Robin Williams, my own comedy hero. How jealous was I that this kid from Pittsburg CA got to be in a movie with the comedy legend I most admired. He went on to star in so many other Hollywood films working alongside other greats and become synonymous with Fil-Am cinema with his role in “The Debut” and in the early days of spoken word. If you’re a fan of the animated fantasy series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” he voices Prince Zuko! These days, Dante is handling the reins as a producer and director in the Asian American filmmaking scene, look out for the upcoming “The Fabulous Filipino Brothers”, starring his own brothers who are stars in their own right. This is part one of my interview with Dante Basco, he definitely deserves a longer talk with you all. Enjoy. Episode 05: Eric Bauza...The Voice Extraordinaire

In Episode 05 of The Flip Chronicles, we go straight into the wacky and twisted mind of Eric Bauza, the multi-talented voice actor whose talent you may have heard come from the mouths of Puss ‘N Boots, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Woody Woodpecker just to name a handful of projects he’s been involved in. Episode 04: DJ Kuttin Kandi...Hip-Hop Pioneer

Episode 04: DJ Kuttin Kandi...Hip-Hop Pioneer

In Episode 04 of The Flip Chronicles, we catch up with true pioneer in Hip-Hop, DJ Kuttin Kandi. Growing up in Queens NYC, young Candice Custodio-Tan thought she’d follow her parents’ dream of becoming a nurse, a pianist, a ballet dancer...but those dreams were interrupted by a new thing happening in the next burrogh over in the Bronx, a movement we all now know as Hip-Hop. Later in the 1990’s she grew to fame in her DJ crew, Fifth Platoon, competing in major turntable battles throughout the country and eventually finding her way into touring as the DJ for artists MC Lyte, The Roots, LL Cool J, Jay-Z and many others. She shares her stories of how it was to be a Pinay coming up in that mostly male scene and leading the way for the many Pinoy/Pinay artists in Hip-Hop today. These days, Kuttin Kandi is focusing her drive on social justice issues, non-profit work and empowerment for minority issues affecting us all in the current political climate. Episode 03: Sonny Sison & Filipino Martial Arts

Episode 03: Sonny Sison & Filipino Martial Arts

In this third episode of The Flip Chronicles, I talk with martial arts fight choreographer/action director Sonny Sison via Manila in this long chat about Filipino Martial Arts, known as FMA. It’s not a very well known form of fighting arts from Asia, but it’s slowly getting the notice of Hollywood from notable fight scenes you’d see in “The Bourne Identity”, “The Hunted” and “Book of Eli” to name a few. Sonny Sison got his start on-camera as a Power Ranger, and a bevy of roles in many of Hollywoods best action films. And if you’re into mango shakes, he’s your guy. Being one of they main players today in the preservation of FMA, he talks about how he handles realistic fight scenes in the projects under his belt of over thirty years. He did the action direction for “Buy Bust” a major action hit to come out of the Philippines recently and is contributing his skills for an upcoming HBO Asia action series. Music for this episode, “Sigaw” by Nino Alejandro available on Spotify and Apple Music.

I'd like to thank Instarem for providing me with a Project Grant, to start this new project. Instarem is a money remittance service that offers the same exchange rate you see on google and low to zero, fees.
