Coach Darryl Adams and former RD alumni and current head varsity basketball coach at Georgetown Day School, Marquis Bell, continue the discussion of realities as trainees embark on the journey to high school basketball. They discuss 8 principles of efficient basketball development. How do you get the most out of your training? Do you hinder your progress? Is there a plan to lead you to your specific goals? Is there a measurable deliverable? Grab a pen and a pad and tune in as they breakdown these 8 principles: Making demands of your trainer Allow your trainer to get to know you Set goals, long and short term, with measurable deliverables Get ready to do some of the work at home Take risks while in training Be open minded about the training process and their use of technology Expect positive feedback only when you set forth a high level of effort What are your thoughts? We'd love to hear what your take is regarding these principles. Do you agree? Are we missing anything? While there are many great trainers who are teaching great things, gaps and inefficiency in development still exist. S1E10 Are Helicopter Parents In The Way Of An Athletes' Progress?
Are parents the biggest hinderance in an athletes' training progress? By letting ego driven decisions rule, or by stepping on the toes of coaches/trainers. Or, should advocating for your child have no boundaries? Often times the rigor of training is laden with discomfort, how do you best support your athlete to dig deeper in order to bask in new levels of achievement? Especially in times when coach/trainer seems calloused or when it seems that special attention is given elsewhere. Should parents believe in the process or perhaps revisit some of the original goals and expectations. All in all skill might be the only thing to get us through. What's your take? S1E7 Do Growing Basketball Players Need Multiple Trainers?
In this episode Coach Darryl and RD parent Rick Spence dive into the relationship between a trainer and young basketball player.  Some parents think multiple trainers are needed to develop a basketball player. Allowing the specialty of each trainer to be developed within that athlete. However some trainers find this to be detrimental, because their job evolves from beginning to end. Trainers are in it for the long haul, so that makes being interchangeable impossible. In a perfect world, a council of trainers would be they key to map out the young athletes entire career.  But we're not in a perfect world, so what do you do? As a parent, you've put in the work to find the right trainer who understands what your needs and goals are, so let your trainer create their masterpiece.
