Mixing it up

Mixing it up

I always stick to the same freebies for a period of time, depending on my thoughts on what the carp are feeding on and which area of the lake I’m fishing and the makeup of the bottom.

But do you switch around your hook baits as much as I do?

I always start each season or session off with two colours one on each rod, normally with the predominant colour/flavour from the previous year. However, if things aren’t producing the goods, I will switch about, with various colours and combinations until I get a carp. Then, I will stick to that one for a bit, not getting too fixated on one colour or even one flavour or wafter, pop-up, bottom bait etc. I happily mix and match, trying different combinations.

Trip 1 Carp Fishing 2024

I've successfully secured a few nights on the bank, a potential four if I'm fortunate enough to weather the two storms headed my way in the coming days. Upon my arrival, the lake still showed traces of cat ice in certain spots. Some anglers had braved the weekend, carving out clear areas in front of their swims. I hesitated to check the water temperature, deciding to wait until the rain subsided tomorrow before deploying the Deeper sonar. The forecast indicates a warming trend in the upcoming days, with milder winds and nighttime temperatures in the double digits.

Meadow Lake’s Winter Wonderland: Unraveling the Secrets of Winter Carp Fishing

Meadow Lake’s Winter Wonderland: Unraveling the Secrets of Winter Carp Fishing

Nestled in the heart of nature’s embrace, Meadow Lake transforms into a winter wonderland when temperatures drop, offering a unique canvas for anglers seeking the challenge of winter carp fishing. In this blog, we’ll embark on an exploration of the serene meadows surrounding Meadow Lake, unveiling the secrets, strategies, and the sheer magic that winter carp fishing holds for those willing to brave the frosty waters.

  1. The Frozen Tapestry: Meadow Lake, surrounded by picturesque meadows and framed by snow-covered trees, paints a captivating scene in winter. The transformation of this serene setting into an icy realm introduces a new dimension to carp fishing, challenging anglers to adapt to the unique demands of the frozen tapestry.
  2. Navigating the Meadows: Winter carp fishing on Meadow Lake is not just about conquering the icy waters; it’s also about navigating the meadows that frame the lake. Anglers need to tread carefully, respecting the delicate ecosystem while seeking out the ideal spots where carp might be hiding beneath the ice.
  3. Patience Amidst Tranquility: The meadows provide a tranquil backdrop for the patient angler. With the slowed metabolism of winter carp, patience becomes a virtue. Meadow Lake, in its winter silence, demands that anglers embrace the stillness, waiting for the subtle signs that hint at carp activity beneath the ice.
  4. Meadow Lake’s Hidden Depths: Carp seek refuge in the deeper waters during winter, and Meadow Lake is no exception. Modern technology, such as fish finders, becomes a valuable ally in unraveling the lake’s hidden depths. Anglers must crack the code of underwater topography to pinpoint the locations where carp gather in winter.
  5. Fine-Tuned Baiting Techniques: The meadows may be quiet, but the underwater world is alive with the challenge of fine-tuned baiting. Smaller, more enticing baits become essential as anglers strive to match the preferences of the selective winter carp. The hardness lies in presenting baits in a way that triggers the curiosity of these cautious underwater giants.
  6. Meadow Lake’s Winter Carp Culture: Understanding the specific behavior of Meadow Lake’s carp during winter is crucial. Whether it’s their preferred feeding spots or the subtle nuances of their movements, delving into the unique culture of Meadow Lake’s winter carp population enhances the angler’s chances of success.

Conclusion:

Winter carp fishing on Meadow Lake is an enchanting pursuit that marries the challenges of icy waters with the tranquility of snow-draped meadows. As you venture into this winter wonderland, equipped with patience, knowledge, and an appreciation for the magic that unfolds beneath the frozen surface, Meadow Lake reveals itself as not just a fishing destination but a testament to the beauty and resilience of nature in the winter months. More Ramblings

My main syndicate water is an old World War II airfield, hence why I’m always referring to it as the Airfield Lake. It was then dug out for gravel and then filled in with Blitz rubble but no bombs apparently! This is good news for us anglers as we need to wade out a lot, to avoid getting the carp snagged up. The lake suffers a lot in the summer months as it’s pretty shallow and the water evaporates quite quickly.

The Symbiotic Connection: Is Fishing Like Camping?

The Symbiotic Connection: Is Fishing Like Camping?

In a world where technology often shapes our daily lives, there's an innate longing for a connection to simpler times. Fishing, an age-old practice ingrained in our ancestral roots, provides a unique gateway to reconnecting with the primal instincts of our caveman ancestors. In this blog, we'll explore the profound journey of fishing as a return to our basic human roots, unlocking the primal allure that has captivated humans for millennia.

The Hunter-Gatherer Legacy

Long before the advent of agriculture and technology, our ancestors were skilled hunter-gatherers, relying on their instincts and the bounty of nature for sustenance. Fishing, as one of the earliest forms of hunting, allowed our caveman predecessors to navigate the waters and procure a vital source of nourishment. Today, as we cast our lines into lakes and rivers, we're channeling the same primal instincts that drove our ancestors to the water's edge.

Choose the best carp fishing rods

Choose the best carp fishing rods

Selecting the best carp fishing rods is essential for a successful and enjoyable angling experience. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right carp fishing rods:
1. **Rod Length:**
– Choose a rod length based on your fishing location and style. Longer rods (12-13 feet) are suitable for long-distance casting, while shorter rods (10-11 feet) are better for tight swims or when casting close to obstacles.
2. **Test Curve:**
– The test curve indicates the rod’s strength and its ability to handle different sizes of carp. Consider the size of carp you intend to catch and choose a rod with an appropriate test curve. For standard carp fishing, a test curve of 2.5-3.5 lbs is common.

My Quest for a 40lb Common – Part 1

This story has been unfolding for several years now. I currently fish two waters, with one of these elusive monsters lurking in the depths of one, and the occasional social outing on another. I’m never too far away from the quest.

I don’t approach this quest with extreme seriousness. At my age, I savor the experience of fishing, relishing the connection with nature and the serenity it brings. I may not be doing myself any favours by not starting on my winter water until November. This lake is becoming progressively more challenging each year, and it’s apparent that a reevaluation of my approach for the next year is in order. The alternative is to transition to the other lake earlier, but I have a deep affection for it and would continue to fish it year-round if it weren’t for its five-month closure during late autumn, winter, and early spring.

Preparations Work

Preparations Work

Prep work is very important, it's not always about the next trip out on the bank, it can be for the upcoming weeks, months, or even years. You need to think ahead and plan what bait you will, e.g., boilies, particles, or any extra/replacement tackle you may need for the future. I don't generally buy much other than end tackle and bait these days, but I certainly keep myself up-to-date with new products, as you could easily miss out on something that would benefit your fishing.

I've written about not carrying too much kit when I'm fishing. I keep all my old and worn-out tackle bags and store all my stuff in these up in the loft. During the last Christmas school holidays, my youngest had friends over (teenagers they like you to keep away - it's too uncool to have a parent around), I was up there having a sort-out. I realized I may need to manage this area a bit better. I may be overstocked on a few items of end tackle, dating back to the 90's! I found a spool of Kryston Merlin, the old green spool, I'd not used it, but I do have a bad habit of if I like a product and it works well, buying a load of it, just in case they stop making it or alter it.

Anyway, I digress (as always), I was up there just checking on a few end-tackle items and got completely carried away with a big clearout. I found is a good thing at times.

October On The Airfield Lake – 2023

As October approached, I found myself facing a persistent challenge in connecting with the carp. There seemed to be various factors preventing me from positioning myself in the right area. However, my confidence in my bait and tackle remained unwavering, and I knew that the solution was within reach – a matter of refining my location and bait presentation. While other anglers had been encountering their own struggles, some starting to see progress, I still grappled with the situation. What I needed was patience and the resolve not to make impulsive decisions, a common pitfall in challenging times. It was a matter of keeping the faith, knowing that things would eventually fall into place.

As the final opportunity for angling in 2023 presented itself, my initial aspirations centered around spending it on the tranquil private lake. Regrettably, this plan was thwarted due to the unanticipated closure of the lake owing to a water level issue.

The notification regarding the closure reached me belatedly on Saturday evening, and had it not been for the timely organization of my fishing tackle and bait, I likely would have opted to stay in the comfort of my home. However, a spontaneous decision led me to embark on a drive. The lake tends to witness increased activity in the week preceding Christmas and the subsequent period, a factor I was cognizant of, influencing my decision to withhold commitment until my actual arrival.

40 Years Of Carp Fishing

I’ve been an avid carp angler for nearly four decades now, and as I approach my 40th year in this pursuit, my passion for carp fishing remains as strong as ever. Over the years, my perspective has shifted, and I’ve learned to appreciate the journey more than the destination.

One of my recent fishing trips didn’t go as planned, but instead of frustration, I found contentment in simply watching and waiting. Nowadays, I derive immense joy from witnessing others’ successes on the bank. This is a far cry from my earlier days when I couldn’t understand why it wasn’t me reeling in the big Common or Mirror carp.

I arrived down at the lake around 0930, the crisp morning air biting at my face as I stepped out of the car. The wind, a relentless force from the Northwest, made the day feel even colder. Driving around, I stopped to have a chat with three fellow anglers, attempting to gauge both the fishing conditions and the erratic behavior of the wind. The lake seemed desolate, with no signs of piscatorial success since the two catches over the weekend.

As I circled back to the main car park, scheduled to meet Steve for a winter social, the clock ticked its way to 0945. Walking around, I contemplated where to set up camp. The air held a certain bleakness, and the cold seemed to seep through specific areas, making me more uncertain about our choice of location. We hoped to position ourselves close enough to share the evening between our swims, creating a sense of camaraderie amid the chilly backdrop.

A Plethora of Possibilities: With four potential swim choices circulating in my mind, I found myself spoiled for options. Steve and I, the sole enthusiasts braving the wintry weather, had the entire lake at our disposal. Opting for the "Duck" swim, I gained access to channels leading to the sanctuary area and the weedy back of the Plato. These areas seemed promising for a winter bite. Settling on an open water spot and a small bay at the first entrance to the sanctuary, I baited the areas with four spombs each, planning to repeat the process the following day. The North East wind, accompanied by the hope of sunshine, promised moments of warmth.

A Quiet Night and the Anticipation of a Challenging Day: The night passed without a single bleep, disappointing my hopes of midnight carp antics. Waking up to sleet and a brisk northerly breeze, I prepared for a day of vigilance in the bivvy. It wouldn't be easy, but as the saying goes, effort equals rewards, especially in the unpredictable world of carp fishing.

While sipping my first brew of the day in the bivvy, I witnessed a substantial fish rolling not far from my baited spot, a sign that bolstered my confidence in the potential presence of a sizable catch in this part of the lake. Throughout the day, the wind's unpredictable course added an element of challenge, eventually settling in the North West for the final 24 hours of my stay.

Observing more fish in front of me, I contemplated adjusting the position of my margin rod, considering a move for the upcoming night. A carp topping further confirmed the need to reposition the left-hand rod into open water. I decided to shift the other rod by half a wrap to the back of my baited area, strategically hoping to target the larger carp first.

Today, the wind is blowing from the north, set to shift to a westerly direction and then briefly to a southwesterly before returning to the north, bringing with it the likelihood of frost on both Friday and Saturday nights. Despite the chill, Saturday promises a maximum temperature of 6 degrees C, and I'm grateful for the anticipated sunshine as I plan to be back home by then.

Watch - Trip 39 Carp Fishing - Private Lake - Syndicate fishing fun 2023 @RichardHandel

Embarking on this trip, I find myself on a private syndicate where I've held a membership for several years, though regrettably, I had never seized the opportunity to cast a line. It took the persuasion of my friend, a seasoned member of considerably longer standing, to finally entice me into exploring the fishing prospects this unique location had to offer.

Originally, our meticulously planned arrival was set for Thursday at the break of dawn. However, our enthusiasm was dampened by a disheartening weather forecast predicting heavy rain. Compounding the situation, Saturday morning was also slated for a deluge, and having to adhere to a strict 48-hour maximum rule meant we would inevitably have to disassemble our gear in the rain. In light of this predicament, a decision was swiftly made to push back our arrival time. This tactical adjustment allowed us to extend our stay until late Saturday afternoon, sparing us the inconvenience of a wet pack-up and setup.

Our synchronized arrival, mere minutes apart around 15:30, coincided with the rain easing off. This fortuitous timing granted us approximately an hour and a half of daylight—sufficient for me to get my rods out before nightfall. Setting up the bivvy in the dark held no qualms for me.

My friend, with his extensive experience, recommended two closely situated swims angled away from each other, affording ample room for three rods each. Identifying promising hard areas, I catapulted pouches of boilies onto each spot, supplementing with a bit of pellet over the margins rod. My choice of hook baits comprised Catalyst, Classic Corn, and Smokey Jack, all in 20mm wafters.

As we were talking, we were pleasantly surprised to observe a few carp breaking the surface, defying expectations despite the recent influx of cold water into the lake. This unexpected display heightened our confidence compared to our initial arrival.

An early morning vigil by the water revealed no signs of carp, but the awe-inspiring surroundings kept me captivated. Around 10 am, with the water flat and calm and the sun casting its warm glow, I reeled in to make necessary adjustments to my rods for the ensuing 24 hours. The unfamiliar terrain beckoned me for a leisurely walk about.

Taking advantage of this break, I fine-tuned the positioning of my baits, now content with their placement. The revised weather forecast favored our trip, with a brisk wind blowing into our bank. Coupled with the persistent rain, it held the promise of enticing carp to feed in our direction.

The rain made its arrival known around 21:00, accompanied by a steady wind at midnight. The gusts persisted, blowing into my little corner. Despite glimpses and sounds of carp at the back, tempting but inaccessible without a bait pole and navigating lily pads—considerations I dismissed—my two rods positioned at the entrance seemed to be overlooked, a minor source of frustration, a typical occurrence in the realm of fishing.

Optimistically, I hoped that the brunt of the heavy rain had subsided, leaving only a gentle drizzle carried by the wind. The rain was forecasted to cease around midday, while the wind was expected to persist throughout the day. My strategy was to give it a couple of hours post-rain, with a plan to start packing up around 15:00, ensuring ample time for a potential bite.

As the rain gradually relented around noon time, we prolonged our stay until 14:30, yet neither of us experienced any action, despite our concerted efforts.

Until next time,

Richard

Watch - Trip 38 - It all goes wrong - Syndicate fishing fun 2023 @richardhandel

I arrived a bit later due to my wife’s car issue, reaching the location by 8:30 AM. Prior to that, I had a discussion with a fellow syndicate member about recent sightings in the past 24 hours. It appears that the area around the point swim seems promising for my goals, but choosing the specific spot remains essential.

My aim for this winter is to target both a mirror and a common, both ideally surpassing the 40lb mark. The mirror frequents this swim often, and there was a potential sighting last night according to Andy, making it a good starting point for me.

I cast both rods onto the spot Andy had baited for a few hours, intending to relocate one rod while keeping the other in the main spot.

Later around noon, I utilized the Deeper sonar and marker rod to explore. I discovered a promising spot slightly to my left, not too close to the margins. After confirming its suitability, I baited the area with four pouches using a catapult and repeated the process for the other rod using a spomb.

Approaching lunchtime, I realized I hadn't even made a cup of tea or organized the rest of my gear. I began setting up, nearly finishing the overwrap when my wife called about her car. Unfortunately, the news wasn't what I wanted to hear. It would cost £500 to get the car back on the road, and it wouldn't be ready today. I needed to return home as the kids had after-school club commitments, and my wife might require a lift back home and to work the next day. Additionally, our eldest had an early morning college exam.

It was disappointing news, something I typically don't handle well. I reluctantly started packing up, contemplating whether I should have stayed home, waiting for the car diagnostic.

Oh well, until next time.
