Trip 10 Carp Fishing – 2024
It’s now Sunday, 17th March, and I’m back out on the Airfield Lake. I arrived at about 1:30 pm, and after looking around for an hour and a bit, I visited Saturday before I went home in the same area. I’m hoping to spot something, there wasn’t a single sign anywhere. I ended up pitching in an area where I had seen the carp on Friday morning. It was a tricky one, as this area has three swims with access to slightly different areas, and from where I was pitched up Friday/Saturday, you can’t 100% tell where the carp are showing
Step by step guide to the best features
Carp fishing is a popular and rewarding hobby that can be enjoyed by anglers of all levels. Here is a simple step by step guide to the best features to fish for carp fishing:

Trip 9 Carp Fishing – 2024
The Airfield Lake is back open, and I’m here on the first day for a quick overnighter. I arrived at about 8 am on Friday morning and was the second person there, another syndicate member was just finishing setting up. The weather is a bit all over the place over the next 24 weeks as well as the following week, which is when I’m planning on getting out here as much as possible, due to finally having my broken tooth removed next Friday. I’m not sure how I will be feeling the following week, then the week after this is the Easter holidays, and the kids are off for two weeks. The second week, the wife is off work and my dad is due to stay. Hopefully, the weather will have improved somewhat, and we can get out and visit a few places.

4 things to look for in a bivvy
A carp bivvy is a type of shelter that carp anglers use to stay comfortable and protected from the weather during their fishing sessions. A carp bivvy can vary in size, shape, design, and features, depending on your preferences and needs. Here are some steps to help you purchase a carp bivvy:

Trip 8 Carp Fishing – 2024
With only 2 trips to go before I head over to the Airfield Lake, I’m back in the same swim after that Scattered Lin or the new big common. If it happens, I will be chuffed, but if not, there’s always next winter or even the odd Summer overnighter.
Joining Hands for a Miracle

Trip 7 Carp Fishing – 2024
This week has been tricky to get the weather conditions perfect for the days I can fish. I have a second appointment with a consultant about my tooth that needs removing, and the saga continues and will no doubt cost me a few pounds. Going private is like buying the best reel once, instead of buying cheap and buying twice. I don’t want to wait for months with the NHS and then end up going back and forth to get it fixed, but there’s a limit on how much I can spend. This appointment is all set for Friday morning, which means I can’t fish Thursday night, which happens to be one of the best nights this week. I’m desperate to do two consecutive nights this week, as next week may well have to be two separate nights, due to a couple of family things.
Starting Over Each Season
The allure of Airfield Lake lies in the challenge it presents each season, requiring anglers to transition carp from their natural food sources to boilies and particles. This constant adaptation keeps me returning for more and keeps the lake shrouded in mystery, as there isn't a clear pattern to this behavior, though I'm beginning to think there might be.
2022 on the Airfield Lake
In 2022, I embarked on a memorable angling session at Airfield Lake, a place that held a special place in my heart for its serene beauty and the promise of great angling adventures. The new year was upon us, and I couldn't wait to get my gear ready for my first trip of the season to this beloved fishing spot.
The session began with the excitement of the unknown, as each trip to the Airfield Lake brought new challenges and opportunities. The weather played a significant role in setting the stage for the session. With a chilly winter breeze in the air, the lake was adorned with a thin layer of frost in the early hours of the morning.
Trip 6 Carp Fishing - 2024
With the pressure still way down low, about 980 mbs, I needed to get back out on the bank this week before it all changes next week. The forecast was saying that there's a gap in the rain between 1100 and 1300 hrs, which turned out to be rubbish as usual, along with strong winds, which were not happening either.

Trip 5 Carp Fishing - 2024
With the prospect of a very wet Wednesday and after previously spending a couple of days stuck in the bivvy. I had to choose between packing up in the rain after two nights fishing, coming a day later, and sitting it out in the rain, or doing a single night and, if possible, squeezing another one in at the end of the week. It's pretty much due to rain from Tuesday night onwards until Sunday. I do hope the weatherman's forecast is wrong, as always, but probably not this week.
Carp fishing issues
Carp fishing, like any other outdoor activity, comes with its own set of challenges and problems. While it's a rewarding and enjoyable pursuit, anglers often encounter various issues when trying to catch these elusive fish. Here are some common problems associated with carp fishing:
- Carp Elusiveness: Carp are known for their wariness and ability to sense danger. They can easily detect unnatural movements and noises, making them challenging to catch. The unpredictability of carp behavior can be frustrating for anglers.
- Changing Weather Conditions: Weather plays a significant role in carp fishing. Sudden changes in weather, such as cold fronts, can affect carp feeding patterns. Adverse weather conditions like heavy rain, strong winds, or extreme temperatures can also make fishing less enjoyable.
Trip 4 Carp Fishing - 2024
With it being half-term this week, and having a very understanding family, I'm out for 5 nights. With any luck, I was sort of hoping to go to the Private School Lake, as it's half-term. Unfortunately, everyone else had the same idea, and who could blame them? Luckily, they have two weeks off at half-term, and there's always next week or, if it becomes too painful down here, I may have the opportunity to move lakes or swims if I feel the need.
Angling Ancestry- Fishing and the Return to Our Caveman Roots
Introduction

In this blog, we'll explore the profound journey of fishing as a return to our basic human roots, unlocking the primal allure that has captivated humans for millennia.
The Hunter-Gatherer Legacy

Fishing, as one of the earliest forms of hunting, allowed our caveman predecessors to navigate the waters and procure a vital source of nourishment. Today, as we cast our lines into lakes and rivers, we're channeling the same primal instincts that drove our ancestors to the water's edge.

Mixing it up
I always stick to the same freebies for a period of time, depending on my thoughts on what the carp are feeding on and which area of the lake I’m fishing and the makeup of the bottom.
But do you switch around your hook baits as much as I do?
I always start each season or session off with two colours one on each rod, normally with the predominant colour/flavour from the previous year. However, if things aren’t producing the goods, I will switch about, with various colours and combinations until I get a carp. Then, I will stick to that one for a bit, not getting too fixated on one colour or even one flavour or wafter, pop-up, bottom bait etc. I happily mix and match, trying different combinations.
Trip 1 Carp Fishing 2024
I've successfully secured a few nights on the bank, a potential four if I'm fortunate enough to weather the two storms headed my way in the coming days. Upon my arrival, the lake still showed traces of cat ice in certain spots. Some anglers had braved the weekend, carving out clear areas in front of their swims. I hesitated to check the water temperature, deciding to wait until the rain subsided tomorrow before deploying the Deeper sonar. The forecast indicates a warming trend in the upcoming days, with milder winds and nighttime temperatures in the double digits.
Meadow Lake’s Winter Wonderland: Unraveling the Secrets of Winter Carp Fishing
Nestled in the heart of nature’s embrace, Meadow Lake transforms into a winter wonderland when temperatures drop, offering a unique canvas for anglers seeking the challenge of winter carp fishing. In this blog, we’ll embark on an exploration of the serene meadows surrounding Meadow Lake, unveiling the secrets, strategies, and the sheer magic that winter carp fishing holds for those willing to brave the frosty waters.
- The Frozen Tapestry: Meadow Lake, surrounded by picturesque meadows and framed by snow-covered trees, paints a captivating scene in winter. The transformation of this serene setting into an icy realm introduces a new dimension to carp fishing, challenging anglers to adapt to the unique demands of the frozen tapestry.
- Navigating the Meadows: Winter carp fishing on Meadow Lake is not just about conquering the icy waters; it’s also about navigating the meadows that frame the lake. Anglers need to tread carefully, respecting the delicate ecosystem while seeking out the ideal spots where carp might be hiding beneath the ice.
- Patience Amidst Tranquility: The meadows provide a tranquil backdrop for the patient angler. With the slowed metabolism of winter carp, patience becomes a virtue. Meadow Lake, in its winter silence, demands that anglers embrace the stillness, waiting for the subtle signs that hint at carp activity beneath the ice.
- Meadow Lake’s Hidden Depths: Carp seek refuge in the deeper waters during winter, and Meadow Lake is no exception. Modern technology, such as fish finders, becomes a valuable ally in unraveling the lake’s hidden depths. Anglers must crack the code of underwater topography to pinpoint the locations where carp gather in winter.
- Fine-Tuned Baiting Techniques: The meadows may be quiet, but the underwater world is alive with the challenge of fine-tuned baiting. Smaller, more enticing baits become essential as anglers strive to match the preferences of the selective winter carp. The hardness lies in presenting baits in a way that triggers the curiosity of these cautious underwater giants.
- Meadow Lake’s Winter Carp Culture: Understanding the specific behavior of Meadow Lake’s carp during winter is crucial. Whether it’s their preferred feeding spots or the subtle nuances of their movements, delving into the unique culture of Meadow Lake’s winter carp population enhances the angler’s chances of success.
Conclusion:
Winter carp fishing on Meadow Lake is an enchanting pursuit that marries the challenges of icy waters with the tranquility of snow-draped meadows. As you venture into this winter wonderland, equipped with patience, knowledge, and an appreciation for the magic that unfolds beneath the frozen surface, Meadow Lake reveals itself as not just a fishing destination but a testament to the beauty and resilience of nature in the winter months. Until Next Time Richard

More Ramblings
My main syndicate water is an old World War II airfield, hence why I’m always referring to it as the Airfield Lake. It was then dug out for gravel and then filled in with Blitz rubble but no bombs apparently! This is good news for us anglers as we need to wade out a lot, to avoid getting the carp snagged up. The lake suffers a lot in the summer months as it’s pretty shallow and the water evaporates quite quickly.

Choose the best carp fishing rods
Selecting the best carp fishing rods is essential for a successful and enjoyable angling experience. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right carp fishing rods:
1. **Rod Length:**
– Choose a rod length based on your fishing location and style. Longer rods (12-13 feet) are suitable for long-distance casting, while shorter rods (10-11 feet) are better for tight swims or when casting close to obstacles.
2. **Test Curve:**
– The test curve indicates the rod’s strength and its ability to handle different sizes of carp. Consider the size of carp you intend to catch and choose a rod with an appropriate test curve. For standard carp fishing, a test curve of 2.5-3.5 lbs is common.

A Year of Carp Tales: Reflections on the Angling Adventures of 2023
Carp Fishing Ramblings
Introduction:
As the sun sets on 2023, it’s time to cast a retrospective eye over a year filled with carp fishing adventures. From the frosty banks of winter to the vibrant days of summer, each outing has been a unique chapter in the tale of chasing carp. Join me on a journey through the highs, the lows, and the unforgettable moments that defined my 2023 carp fishing escapades.
My Quest for a 40lb Common – Part 1
This story has been unfolding for several years now. I currently fish two waters, with one of these elusive monsters lurking in the depths of one, and the occasional social outing on another. I’m never too far away from the quest.
I don’t approach this quest with extreme seriousness. At my age, I savor the experience of fishing, relishing the connection with nature and the serenity it brings. I may not be doing myself any favours by not starting on my winter water until November. This lake is becoming progressively more challenging each year, and it’s apparent that a reevaluation of my approach for the next year is in order. The alternative is to transition to the other lake earlier, but I have a deep affection for it and would continue to fish it year-round if it weren’t for its five-month closure during late autumn, winter, and early spring.
