Rise of the Republic: A Sacramento Republic FC Podcast
By Richard Ivanowski
Blake and Rich are here to talk everything Sacramento Republic FC. The team is joining the MLS in 2023, and we want to follow along every step of the way. Definitely one of the five best Republic podcasts out there!
SB Nation's Alicia Rodriguez joins the pod to help us put Republic FC into perspective with the other California soccer clubs. We look ahead to potential playoff matches with Phoenix Rising, LA Galaxy II, Orange County, and San Diego.
Wowzers. This one had a heartbreaking ending and a terrible beginning, but an incredibly encouraging middle. This was the best offensive game of the season. Republic FC shredded Reno's defense for much of the game.
An incredible shorthanded comeback amounts to one of the best performances of the year for Republic FC. Yet Rich still finds things to nitpick. Blake thinks the redcard on Roro was bull. Orange County was one of the tougher games of the year, but the Quails came through.
It was a Wednesday matinee game in Portland, and kids under 18 got in free! At least that was the T2 goalkeeper's policy, as he played victim to the first ever goals for both Mario Penagos and Juju Chavez in the final minutes of the game. The Sacramento Republic FC Academy looks strong. The first team... not so much.
Richard is joined by soccer scribe Evan Ream to talk all things Republic. Evan has covered the team from day one, literally. He shares thoughts on the move to the MLS, what it takes to be a soccer city, and why the USA always seems to fall short.
It's a comeback, baby! The Republic have been a first half team all season, but that was not the case Saturday night. They went into the locker room down 1-0 but stormed back in the second half. Skundrich equalized and Iwasa got the winner.
We are joined by Cameron Salerno, Republic beat writer for the Sacramento Bee. Will we see a solidified XI soon? Why didn't Iwasa start earlier in the year? How serious are the injury issues around the team? Cam answers these questions and more.
The Republic return to Sacramento with an emphatic win over Tacoma. Iwasa scored his 50th goal as a Quail. Formella scored a brace against the Defiance... again. A bad defensive gaffe let in a goal after halftime, but otherwise this was the best match of the season.
Another match against Reno, another 1-0 win on a penalty kick. The defense was a lot weaker this team, but the offense is improving. Bijev looks great. Belmar does not. Third consecutive clean sheet for Diaz.
We will take the three points, thank you very much. It wasn't pretty. Only one goal against a very weak Portland Timbers 2 team. Sacramento needs to get back on track soon. At least it looks like Iwasa is on a mission to make that happen.
Rich is joined by GT Battle of the SRFC Podcast. They discuss the draw against San Diego and the upcoming match against Portland, but mostly stick to an analysis of lineups and formations within the team.
The Republic lose their first game of the season against a very young LA Galaxy 2 side. We are very concerned about Formella and Bijev, but very excited about Werner and Sargis. Sacramento's formation and lineup appears to be settling down, but we want changes.
As we continue our search for a top international club for Rich to support, we are joined by three fantastic guests. Matt George of KHTK explains how he became a Norwich City fan. Kings fan Ace Ubas explains why you should support Everton. Sportswriter Sanjesh Singh expresses his love for Arsenal.
We have a win! After over 90 minutes of knocking on the door, the Republic finally get on the board thanks to a handball. There is still plenty of room to improve, but Sacramento has to be happy with the clean sheet and the 3 points. Blake and Rich breakdown the action minute by minute.
The Republic are back! Three first-half goals for Sacramento had us feeling great, but the team had to settle for just one point in their matchup with Tacoma. Rich and Blake break down the action minute by minute and select their men of the match. Plus: Is it time to bench Grinwis or Iwasa?
While the USL has been on pause, other leagues around the world have been up and running for a while now. We start our international club search today with the EPL top-six.
The USL is returning soon, and with it our beloved Sac Republic. Blake and Richard breakdown the entire schedule, starting with a home game July 13th against the Tacoma Defiance. Can Sacramento make it out of the group stage? How will the league look in a post-Coronavirus world? We try to make sense of everything and provide some news updates in this mini-episode.
