Episode 34: Navigating through family trauma with Christine Chen (@xoxochristinechen)

Episode 34: Navigating through family trauma with Christine Chen (@xoxochristinechen)

Tis the season, the holiday season! For better or worse... most people are spending a lot of time with FAMILY. In that case there is no better timing and person in Christine Chen, Life coach extraordinaire and my lovely fiance, to talk about Intergenerational Trauma aka Family Trauma. Are you part of a family that shuts down and shuts you down or brushes things under the rug becoming emotionally avoidant or has explosive fights but never works towards any type of conflict resolution or understanding? It is toxic, can be frustrating, and damaging but you are not alone because Christine and I have dealt and are still currently navigating through this type of intergenerational trauma with our respective families. This trauma and pain is real and deeply rooted in our community, culture, and upbringing that goes way back in time. As we examine how these traumas affect us and how to deal and grow from them, hopefully this conversation helps you navigate these tumultuous environments and leads you towards a place of inner healing and safety.

Episode 33: Men in Pain

Episode 33: Men in Pain

There are so many reasons to create this episode about Men in Pain, which is really the conversation on the topic of Men and their mental health. Whether you are a man that struggles with this very darkness or you know somebody in your life affected by it, this is for you. I have felt alone, isolated, letting my past mistakes dictate my present and future, and felt trapped in the darkness of not being able to feel, express, and understand my emotions and traumas in life. We simply can't ignore that men die by suicide 3.5 times more often than women. Forty-nine percent of men feel more depressed than they admit to people in their lives. About 6 of every 10 men experience at least one trauma in their lives. I am one of those men and ready to shine a light into this darkness and tell my story in hopes it can help others. I've been to my lowest of lows contemplating suicide. This is a story of my pain that has grown to a story of healing against many odds. I never ever imagined I could be here right now with the ability to share all the lows in my life and attach meaning to it. If you are here, you are not alone, we are not alone, we can build a better mental health future together.

Episode 32: What I've learned about love, so far... with Steven Lim (@stevenkwlim)

Episode 32: What I've learned about love, so far... with Steven Lim (@stevenkwlim)

We got the one and only Steven Lim in the house! He is the co-founder at Watcher Entertainment and also creator & host of Buzzfeed's hit food show 'Worth It', and newly ENGAGED! You would think for this episode we will be talking about his journey, growth, and things he has learned as Youtuber, content creator, and entrepreneur, but NO instead we are going to talk about the journey, growth, and things he has learned about LOVE. As much work, thought, and development that needs to be put into a career for success the same goes for emotional development before and in a relationship. I find too often men don't equate the two. So let's start to normalize and share these conversations especially for asian men about our journeys and growth in the very vulnerable and personal topic of love. Come join us in not just congratulating Steven on his engagement but also find out what he's learned about love, so far... Part 2 coming after the wedding?!

Episode 30: Social Media - How to avoid DOOMscrolling with Regina Fang (@regina.fang)

Episode 30: Social Media - How to avoid DOOMscrolling with Regina Fang (@regina.fang)

When discussing SOCIAL MEDIA, the bane of our existence, whether that be current TikTok trends or how we can avoid doomscrolling, I thought of one perfect reinforcement to bring on to have this fun conversation. She is REGINA FANG (my personal source for all things trending), founder of slow fashion clothing brand 'At Last' and cohost of my favorite podcast 'Perfectly Imperfect'. We discuss how social media has evolved for us on a personal use basis since it came into our lives from 2005 until now. Sometimes it feels like there are more cons than pros, negatives than positives to how social media affects us in our every day lives. Given how toxic it can potentially be, we break down how difficult it is to find the right balance and approach to how we spend time and energy on these addictive apps.

Episode 29: MEN and LOVE

Episode 29: MEN and LOVE

I'm a man ready to talk about LOVE! How often do we encounter men in our lives that get squeamish, awkward, and extremely uncomfortable when talking about love? There is a reason for this! In this episode I examine this very struggle. How does the experience of growing up with the societal rules of masculinity affect how men process love? We are going to analyze 'the why' this problem exists. Can we unlock the mysteries of the male mind that relates to love? If women are searching long and far for the key, but men are oblivious with their own quest to grow and understand the nuances of love, we are stuck in a rock and a hard place. The journey may be difficult, but the conversation needs to start for awareness and growth to happen in the L word. Finally we try to answer another age old question: Does unconditional love exist? It's all related and the path to enlightenment is the same journey with love!

With love, thank you for tuning in. - your host Jack

Episode 28: How can we overcome the fear of failure? with Edward Lynn

Episode 28: How can we overcome the fear of failure? with Edward Lynn

As we approach Halloween, BOO!, it is only fitting we talk about FEAR, the fear of FAILURE *gasp* the horror, I know. This week I have the third installment and a fixture of this show, Edward Lynn, as the guest. He is a nurse by profession, but most importantly he has a deep passion, love, and calling to help others not just physically but mentally in growth and recovery. The fear of failure is much like a disease of the mind that affects everybody to different degrees. It's analogous to a cancer that infects the mind, and when left untreated can spread and become very destructive to our psyche. Many times it immobilizes people completely or other times it shows in dangerous micro or even overt aggressions. Both Ed and I get REAL AND RAW while we examine our journeys with understanding how we have processed failure and things we learned to help overcome the fear of it. The journey is difficult but with a willingness to grow and self reflect there is a light at the end of the tunnel for us all. Let's get there together!

Episode 27: Is dating more challenging for Asian guys?! with Taylor Chan (@chanman325) and Mike Bow (@mikebowshow)

For this episode I present to you 2 guests for the price of 1, a true 2 for 1 special! They are the embodiment of the word BROMANCE and my dear friends, Tay "The Bae" Chan and Mike "The Show" Bow. Taylor is the director and writer (the everything) at Wong Fu Productions and Mike is an actor (you can catch him on CW's Kung Fu), content creator, and the easter egg in much of Taylor's work. It only makes perfect sense as Taylor directed the hit series "Dating After College" for WFP and with Mike Bow acting in it that we team up to talk about the topic of dating for the modern Asian guy. Much has been said and discussed around the question "Is dating more challenging for Asian guys?". In this conversation we talk about this very real issue and through shared personal experience and stories developed tips and tricks to shift one's mindset to tackle dating in a more healthy way. The dating world is a jungle so join us with our machete's to get through it together.

Episode 26: What nobody tells you about being a dad with Ben Buescher (@ben.ja.mins)

This week on RITF I am ecstatic to bring on Ben Buescher, one of many super dads out there, as a guest to talk about the all important topic of FATHERHOOD aka #dadlife! He is the husband to beauty guru Jen Chae, Jen "From head to toe". Together they not only have created an incredibly successful youtube channel and business, but a beautiful family with 2 of the cutest children in the whole wide world in Aria and Ezra. None of this is without extreme hard work in their relationship and personal development. I hope you enjoy this eye opening conversation with Ben as he gets real with the fears he faced in becoming a dad and growth he made internally to prepare to be the best dad he could be. We also discuss the hardships pre and post pregnancy for them as parents and how men can show up better and stay connected throughout the process. So whether you are a man or woman asking the question "Am I ready to be a dad?" or "Is my partner ready to be a dad?" maybe this episode will give you a little insight into that.

Episode 24: Why men gotta LIE?!

Episode 24: Why men gotta LIE?!

This is the season 2 finale episode! Episode 24 will affectionately also be known as the Kobe Bean Bryant episode (one of his retired jersey numbers is #24) and will be in memory of him and his daughter, Gianna Bryant, who tragically passed. Long live the mamba mentality! The topic of the episode will be to answer the question "Why men gotta lie?!" from a male perspective. I've long heard from many women who ask 'why it is so hard to find a man they can trust?', and think that good men are so hard to find. I will try to break down the reasons behind why I lied in my relationship with Christine and why lying for men becomes the go to solution that is influenced by societal culture of boys will be boys and guy code. There is so much to uncover with this topic so this is only the start of the conversation!

Episode 22: Jack's Journal Entry 1 (Men + Mindfulness)

Let's try something new! These episodes will be a little more casual. They will be a window into my life happenings like how I celebrated Christine's birthday this past week, was I able to pull off a birthday surprise!? Also random musings, sparked thoughts, interesting concepts and conversations. For the first episode of Jack's journey entry, I speak a little on Men and Mindfulness. Why aren't men as thoughtful, especially compared to women? Why are guys so bad at buying their girlfriend's gifts? I am definitely guilty of that in my past relationships. It's like pulling teeth sometimes or studying for a test last minute for men. What are we missing here? Finally, is there a way to grow and develop awareness and mindfulness for these male friends, boyfriends, husbands, and brothers. Hint, there is! I am living proof.

Episode 19: Looking for a HERO with Edward Lynn

Episode 19: Looking for a HERO with Edward Lynn

My returning guest, Edward Lynn, has had my back since we were just 2 knuckle head lost boys, but now just 2 grown a little less lost men. He's a caretaker by nature not just by profession, being a nurse. One thing you will never get from our conversations will be sugarcoating and BS. Are you or do you know a guy (a friend, a brother, or boyfriend) that has felt lost and feeling alone because they can't find their HERO or their TRIBE? By hero I mean role model. This episode will be centered around the discussion of the struggle for many young men, especially asian men, in finding good and real role models. We talk about our personal journeys and how this very problem has led us to a path of role modeling and lastly finding and forming the right tribe. Know this, if you are reading this and listening to this episode, you are not alone, you don't need to keep the darkness to yourself. You can find the right hero and even grow to be your own and be that for others.

We recorded this very special episode on the 2 year anniversary of our engagement! I hope you enjoy the conversation we have centered around breaking down the 'Nice Guy' complex and construct from both the male and female perspective. I have long been labeled as 'just a nice guy' so I understand fully the frustration and struggle that comes with that label, but more importantly it's time to think beyond that narrative and focus on the 'Nice Girl' side, just the woman's story also. Episode 15: Why are men so difficult!? with Ashley Matsunami (@ashmats)

For my first guest of season 2, I could not have brought anybody better on than my very, very, and I mean VERY good friend Ashley Matsunami (@ashmats).  From way back when we met at San Diego Comic Con selling Awkward Animal plushes to her time working at Wong Fu Productions and now fittingly with her marvelous self working at Marvel, we've had a lot of discussions on "why men are so difficult?!" over the years. Now, I somehow convinced her to record a conversation about that on this podcast. We talk about her relationship with Papa Matsunami, big brother Matsunami, and her boyfriend Mr. Billz. All amazing formative men in her life. Hope you enjoy this fun chat!

Episode 14: My Tiger Mom

Episode 14: My Tiger Mom

In what probably has been one of the hardest episodes I have recorded in the short life span of this podcast "Right in the feels" presents to you: My Tiger Mom. In this episode I talk about why the ferocious Tiger Mom/Tiger parenting exists and where it originates from. Then I tell only a fraction of what I understand and know of the struggles and life of my very own Tiger mom. To end we explore how the children of tiger moms, tiger cubs, MYSELF, can begin to loosen the screws and clutches of their claws. I send all my love to my mom, to all moms.

Episode 13: Thinking outside the 'MAN' box

Episode 13: Thinking outside the 'MAN' box

This is the official Season 2 premier and return episode! We are back and ready to kick off the conversation with man feels 102: MASCULINITY. Masculinity is just a box of thoughts, a social construct, made up for boys and men to play the role of man in society. This role prevents you from accessing parts and inner depths of yourself, many of it emotional, to grow as a human. The huMAN growth that takes the emphasis out of MAN. Masculinity as it currently defined is to separate and divide masculine and feminine, rejecting and ostracizing the feminine, and glorifying and boosting the masculine, EGO. It creates a deep seed of homophobia through fear and misunderstanding that needs to be dissected to be understood. We can only grow and redefine masculinity by thinking outside the 'MAN' box. I thank you for tuning in and engaging in this topic and conversation. If you know anybody that needs this, I hope you send it along with love, compassion, and empathy.

Episode 12: THE MALE EGO - Season 1 finale

Episode 12: THE MALE EGO - Season 1 finale

This is officially the season 1 finale episode of RITF! Wow, 12 episodes, 12 weeks in and later into this podcast we top it off with talking about the proverbial MALE EGO. I can already imagine and hear women listeners out there agreeing with that the male ego can be a PROBLEM, a big one at that. Why do men need to have their egos boosted and massaged? Also if men are supposed to be as tough as nails why are their egos so fragile? For men, have you struggled or are you currently struggling with your ego? Do you even understand that elusive, defiant, or just pervasive monster swimming around in your mind? It can be crippling in both ways, one way is with insecurities and low self esteem  or the opposite way being overly prideful and narcissistic. Each way inhibits the growing of the self and healthy relationships in your life. Come join me on this magic school bus of insight into the male psyche. Can we find a way to triumph over the toxic nature of the EGO? Could it be with the... superEGO? Thank you from the depths of my heart for being part of this journey. Season 2 will be coming soon!

Episode 11: Let's stand together #StopAsianHate with Joshua Fu (@mistahfu)

Episode 11: Let's stand together #StopAsianHate with Joshua Fu (@mistahfu)

For this week's episode I bring on my soul brother Joshua Fu (@mistahfu) to navigate and talk about a topic that has deeply affected us personally and our communities which is, #StopAsianHate. The surge in hate crimes against the Asian American Pacific Islander community has left us with more questions than answers, more pain than hope. We only hope this sheds just a little light as well as start the conversation and dialogue on the things we can control and be active in to help this cause. With much love, for the people, the victims, that have been affected directly and indirectly, WE STAND TOGETHER.

Episode 10: You've changed, bro! with Edward Lynn

Episode 10: You've changed, bro! with Edward Lynn

For many boys and young men growing up, including myself, there was a struggle and hardship in being vulnerable and emotional within groups of male friends aka bro squads. This week I bring on my very good friend Edward Lynn, a nurse with many years of experience in healthcare as well as a mentor and coach for many young men, to discuss THIS STRUGGLE that we had with each other growing up as well as how we've matured and grown our perspective on it. If you are a woman maybe you are wondering what that mental block men have with each other are or if you are a man just wanting to find that safe place. Let's start the discussion of how we can create a space that embraces crucial conversation for men to communicate honestly and openly about their brokenness and FEELS without judgement. You are not alone, you don't need to "BE A MAN". We are here to support you, your journey, and growth with love.

Episode 9: Just marry me already! with Amy Okuda (@amyokuda) and Mitchell Hashimoto

This is truly a 2 for 1 special as newlyweds actress Amy Okuda and Mitchell Hashimoto, founder of the software company HashiCorp, join me in sharing their amazing 9 year relationship journey, what a ride! They had to balance 2 very different and demanding careers in the emotional ups and downs of an acting career and the struggles of a startup company early in dating all while dealing with long distance. How did they go from almost breaking up by putting their careers first to putting each other first? How did and does Mitchell survive Amy's constant poking? They have such a beautiful and funny proposal story with amazing chemistry to top it off! I hope you enjoy their thoughts and insights as much as I am honored for them to join the podcast.

Episode 8: The Art of the Hustle with Ant Ma (@antestetik)

Episode 8: The Art of the Hustle with Ant Ma (@antestetik)

This is the story of my home boy Ant Ma, a true asian hustler and entrepreneur! What if I told you that he got kicked out 2 colleges, worked 17 hour days as a sushi chef, sold drugs to make ends meet, but ended up working at Just Kidding Films doing everything imaginable, then using his chef experience to partner with them to own multiple food businesses, and finally becoming a family man creating relatable and vulnerable content on his youtube channel with his wife and kids. He's an inspiration to this RITF show and a testament to the phrase "Hustle Hard / Stay Humble". I hope you enjoy this episode as we bring his story to life. No matter what, please remember: we believe in you, you can overcome these obstacles that life has in store.

Episode 2: My dad is an asshole

Let's talk about daddy issues! In this episode, I get brutally honest as I tell the story of how the extremely difficult relationship with my dad has shaped me as a person and as a man in all the different periods of my life.  I also reveal the deep lessons I learned through these hardships and give some advice to those that can relate to having a dad that is either a stone wall, stubborn, too prideful, emotionally avoidant, barely there, not there at all or whatever else is on the spectrum of difficult dads.
