Accelerating Equality

Accelerating Equality

Happy Women's Day in advance everyone!

Most welcome to episode 2 of Celebrate Women with Ash as we discuss how to accelerate equality. Women are more than 50% of the world's population, so delayed equality between men and women is a hindrance to achieving the world's development. Women's Day was first recognized by the UN in 1977, though it has its roots in the labor movements of the early 20th century. For 2024, Women's Day has a theme of investing in women: Accelerate progress.

The UN states that one of the key challenges in achieving gender equality by 2030 is lack of financing with a staggering USD 360 billion annual deficit in spending on gender-equality measures. According to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres stresses that it will take another 300 years to reach full gender equality. When we were foreseeing that we could achieve equality by 2030.

To celebrate women on Women's Day, I invited one of the feminists and human rights activists Mary Ndaro from Tanzania. Enjoy :)

Green Economy

Green Economy

Green Economy!
Climate change is real, and it's impacting millions of lives from the south to the north. The effects of climate change include droughts, extreme weather conditions, and water and power scarcity to mention a few. These devastating effects do not cease from happening unless we actively reverse their drastic change.
Are sustainable futures possible with just a green economy?
To discuss this meet Tiffany Tong a co-founder and CEO of Aloi (www.aloi.global)

Aloi is enabling climate financing for grassroots entrepreneurs through increasing loan journey insights. Our digital token technology offers 3 features to automatically track a full loan cycle: monitor loan usage, loan repayments, and payments received.
Tiffany has worked in data and development in Africa and Asia for the last 14 years. She has implemented large-scale projects and statistical surveys for governments, NGOs, and the World Bank.
To learn more about today's topic join me and Tiffany who is an inborn innovator making green technologies accessible for all. :)

Breath Work

Breath Work

Breath is what makes humans alive. And yet, we often don't pay much attention to how we breathe. When we are young we automatically breathe from our bellies, deep breaths in and deep breaths out. However, the busyness of life makes us take breathing for granted until the breath becomes thin air. Join me and a Frances as we discuss breathing. A Frances Kormpala is a global citizen who is a performance artist, poet, breathworker, and affiliated with the feministic storytelling initiative based in Bergen. Enjoy the show :)

Women Swimmers

Women Swimmers

The number of people who die in traffic is the same as in drowning accidents in Norway. So far this year, 53 people have died by drowning in Norway. Last year, 89 people died by drowning. The majority of deaths involve people with minority backgrounds. To prevent this from happening, the Bergen Swimming Club has a swimming course, especially for women of minority backgrounds. I am one of the participants. Today, I am honored to invite a swimming instructor, Juliana Ng, with her daughter, Jadelyn Fong to my podcast. They are both swimming instructors and work side by side.

A Stay-At-Home Mom

A Stay-At-Home Mom

Raising a child is an important and a full-time job. Some say it's like working in an emergency department, that you need to be vigilant at all times. However, economic and societal pressure doesn't allow many women to be full-time mothers at home. Being a stay-at-home mom is a privilege that not so many women get to experience. Today, I am honoured to see my long-time friend Regina Willingham a stay-at-home mom, an art teacher, and a potter. Join her as she shares her experience of being a stay-at-home mom.

Studying Abroad

Studying Abroad

People study abroad for different reasons. For me, it was to get a different learning experience since I have been studying and living in Tanzania since birth. I became thirsty for studying abroad to expand my knowledge and expose myself to other cultures. For others, it can be about traveling and living in another country than their own. While others it can be about finding new work opportunities abroad or getting promoted in their own countries after their studies. All in all, it can be a challenging, beautiful, and daring experience to study abroad.

To discuss studying abroad, I am joined by Gloria Ampim who is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, mother, and wife from Ghana and graduated with her Ph.D. from the University of Bergen in Norway last year. Join us and learn from her great experience of doing her master's degree and her Phd abroad. Studying abroad is possible for anyone who has a will and motivation. Enjoy :)

The corona pandemic caused mass trauma in the last three years. It also disrupted our way of living which was considered normal and it took the lives of millions of people. Corona gave some positive outcomes as well such as the use and the normalization of Zoom and the change of our lifestyle. People realized that they did not need so many materials to survive but rather the necessities. And the important question was about the immunization that the scientists managed to get hold of its doses in a short time. Many people got immunized against the virus and a lot of them refused because they did not believe in its efficacy since it took a short time to be experimented with before the use of it.

Meet a scientist and vaccine woman Prof. Rebecca Jane Cox, who works at the Influenza Centre at the Department of Clinical Science of the University of Bergen. She is also a world-renowned expert in immunization who has received numerous awards. Enjoy the episode
