Reel Talk: What happened at the Oscars?

Reel Talk: What happened at the Oscars?

Welcome back to Reel Talk! For three weeks, we've been discussing all things Academy Awards. We broke down the categories, placed our predictions and discussed the Oscars buzz. Now, our time has come to discuss the film-lovers version of the Super Bowl: the Oscars Ceremony.

Oscars Sunday returned to the Dolby Theatre after last year's pared-down event, and it returned with a bang (and three hosts). We try to make sense of the shocking Will Smith/Chris Rock moment, discuss CODA's last-minute sprint to winning Best Picture and share which Oscar moments brought us joy. And don't worry, we do bring up Dune (winner of six technical awards) and Andrew Garfield (winner of our hearts and GIF-able Red Carpet happy dances). It wouldn't be an episode of Reel Talk if we didn't.

Hit play to follow along with the final podcast in our Oscars series.

Reel Talk: Animated feature films, directors and Best Picture predictions

Reel Talk: Animated feature films, directors and Best Picture predictions

Welcome back to Reel Talk! Over the course of four episodes, we will be discussing all things Academy Awards. We’ll break down every category, place our predictions, and discuss all the Oscars buzz leading up to (and after) the big ceremony this Sunday.

This week we kick things off with some of our most anticipated Oscar moments from the red carpet to entertaining acceptance speeches. Then, we dive into the final big categories, which devolved into us gushing about The Mitchells v. the Machines, marveling at how Steven Spielberg managed to create what is arguably the definitive interpretation of West Side Story and procrastinating choosing our Best Picture predictions by diving into each one. Spoilers, we do pick our "Will Wins" and "Want to Wins," and Don't Look Up made neither of our lists.

Hit play to follow along with our (occasionally explicit) cinematic discussion. Full disclosure, our mic check included live first-reaction commentary to the new trailer for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent starring Nicolas Cage which set a delightfully chaotic tone for our discussion. Also note this episode was recorded on March 10, so we don't hit on the latest Oscar drama like Jane Campion placing her foot squarely into her mouth during her Critics Choice Awards acceptance speech or Oscar's decision to initially not invite West Side Story star Rachel Zegler.

Reel Talk Podcast: Technical, writing and performance breakdown

Welcome back to Reel Talk! Over the course of four episodes, we will be discussing all things Academy Awards. We’ll break down every category, place our predictions and discuss all the Oscars buzz leading up to (and after) the big ceremony on March 27.

This week we are talking about the technical categories that will air during the telecast along with the writing, music and performance categories. We discuss why no matter who wins the best original song it will be history-making, confess our not-so-secret adoration of Andrew Garfield and stumble our way to making a decision about who will win the best actress category. We even surprise ourselves with some of our in-the-moment predictions.

Hit play to follow along, and make sure to tune in after Spring Break when we dive deep into all the best picture, best director and best animated feature nominees. Maybe by then, we’ll have committed to our best picture predictions.

Reel Talk: Breaking down the Oscar snubs, fan favorite and unaired categories

Reel Talk: Breaking down the Oscar snubs, fan favorite and unaired categories

Welcome to Reel Talk! Over the next four weeks, we will be discussing all things Academy Awards. We’ll break down every category, place our predictions and discuss all the Oscars buzz leading up to the big ceremony on March 27.

This week we’re talking snubs, the new fan favorite category and the categories that won’t air during the telecast. That means passionate arguments for snubs like Denis Villeneuve (Dune), Bradley Cooper (Nightmare Alley), and Nicolas Cage (Pig); lots of Spider-Man: No Way Home; and a long discussion about the visual and technical prowess of Dune.

We also discuss the tension between the Academy and blockbuster movies. Why is it harder for some genres to get nominated? When do big movies deserve Oscar recognition? And will the new fan favorite category have any impact on future nominations?

And make sure to tune in next where we’ll discuss the remaining technical and design categories plus all the acting nominees (and Riley’s obsession with Andrew Garfield).
