So what is Yeg Me all about?

Edmonton is a great city and we wanted to connect with some Edmontonians to learn more about them and more importantly, some of their thoughts and insight about Edmonton (YEG).

So...what better way to do that than to host a podcast on said topic. We also had some fun coming up with some Yeg.Me swag with some pretty awesome YEG designs.

YEG Me some pies with Jamie Scott, owner of South Island Pie Co.

YEG Me some pies with Jamie Scott, owner of South Island Pie Co.

We sat down recently with Jamie Scott, the owner of the South Island Pie Company and learned all about his journey to Edmonton, the start of South Island Pies company and their new chapter of building the food business accelerator UpRoot Food.

Originally from the south island of New Zealand, Jamie – the pie man himself – travelled to Canada on his first OE (overseas experience). From the day he left NZ, he longed for the comforts of a hot, savoury, traditional NZ meat pie. Once settled in Edmonton with his Canadian wife, he realized there were no down-under-style meat pies to be found.

It was time to put that famous kiwi ingenuity to use and create his own homemade meat pies. After years of making meat pies for friends and family and fine tuning his recipes, the South Island Pie Co. came to life. Jamie wanted to share a little piece of NZ and his love of savoury pies with the fine folks of Edmonton – and that’s how South Island Pie Co. began!

Jamie is an avid mountain biker who loves to follow his rides up with a good craft beer. When he's not making his savoury pies for his fellow fine Edmontonians, you can find him cheering on the All-Blacks or the Oilers, taking in one of our city's markets, or brewing his own beer.

Mike House - YEG Me about climbing mountains and being a champion for kid's health

He learned at an early age to go knocking on doors and he wasn’t afraid to make the big ask. His ask at the time was only for cookies mind you, but the early makings of his best skill set was being established.

We were so happy to get some time with Mike House. Mike is the president & CEO of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in Edmonton.

Mike previously served as the assistant dean, development & stakeholder relations for the Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta. Working throughout Alberta, Mike has been a part of many noteworthy capital campaigns for a variety of organizations in health, education and social services, including STARS Air Ambulance, Canadian Cancer Society, Lakeland College and Discovery House Women’s Shelter in Calgary.

Prior to his direct work in the fundraising profession, Mike enjoyed an extensive and productive career as a senior marketing and communications leader in the arts and culture sector. He has worked in senior positions throughout the US and Canada at such organizations as the Edmonton Opera and The Citadel Theatre

in Edmonton, Alberta, Theatre Projects in Calgary and the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, PA.

His academic credentials include an MBA specializing in finance and an undergraduate business degree in marketing from the University of Alberta. Mike also holds a CFRE designation that is recognized internationally within the fundraising profession.

Rick LeLacheur - YEG Me about so many Edmonton things!

Rick LeLacheur - YEG Me about so many Edmonton things!

Host of the YEG Me podcast, Rob LeLacheur sat down with his dad Rick to discuss so many great Edmonton topics. Rick has had a front row seat or has been sitting at the table for many of Edmonton's great events, organizations and companies.

He's beginning his third year as team president of the BC Lions in 2020 bringing a wealth of business and professional sports experience to the role.

A native of Edmonton, Rick was formerly the president and CEO of the Edmonton Eskimos from 2002 to 2011. In that time, the Eskimos enjoyed two Grey Cup wins in 2003 and 2005 and hosted tremendously successful Grey Cup Festivals in 2002 and 2010. His duties in Edmonton also included serving as an alternate on the CFL Board of Governors as well as chairman of the CFL’s Audit Committee and a member of the league’s Executive Committee.

An accomplished business executive, Rick’s passion for sports dates back to his junior hockey days as a member of the Edmonton Oil Kings. When his playing days ended, he joined the family business Western Moving and Storage in 1967. He was named president in 1982 and served in that capacity until 1992 when the company was sold.

From 1992 to 1998, he served as president and CEO of Economic Development Edmonton (EDE). Skillfully building a vast network of influential business owners and volunteers, he played a critical role in Edmonton’s winning bid to host the incredibly successful 2001 World Championships in Athletics.

Rick’s highly-respected and influential business practices have been sought out numerous companies and an organizations. As a result, he’s spent time on a number of boards including a six-year term as chairman of Alberta’s Workers Compensation Board (WCB), Chair of Horse Racing Alberta and six years on the board of Travel Alberta, including a two-year term as chair.

He has also served on the boards of the Alberta Economic Development Authority, TELUS Corporation, Allied Van Lines Ltd and Prairie Land Corporation.

Rick and his wife, Joan Forge, reside in the Vancouver area. Together, they have three children and eight grandchildren.

We look forward to the day he returns to the YEG but will patiently wait while he is having some fun working in Vancouver.

Pam Kirby - YEG Me about being a Bear DJ

Pam Kirby - YEG Me about being a Bear DJ

So much fun sitting down with Pam Kirby for the YEG Me podcast. Pam is the evening host at 100.3 the Bear where you can listen to her from 7pm to midnight through the week.

She came from the Peg but we won’t hold that against her. She’s dabbled in the media and promo industry and has fully landed at the Bear a few years ago.

Some of her uncanny abilities include being able to fall asleep anywhere, like at a Mariners baseball game and in a bathroom at a casino in Las Vegas! She loves the Edmonton YEG arts scene as is hugely supportive of all those improvers out there.

Don't be afraid to call her during her show. She takes calls from everyone...even from the Remand centre!

Allan Mott - YEG Me some B-Movie gold

Allan Mott - YEG Me some B-Movie gold

Allan Mott - So much fun to have local Edmontonian Allan join us to talk about his writing career and creative touch points in our community.

To go along with his passion for B-Movies, he’s a book writer too! A few years back he was allowed to publish his own book on the subject, the imaginatively titled Scary Movies, which documented the creation, reaction and relevance of six of his favourite horror movies.

It remains the best of the 12 and ½ books he’s managed to publish thus far (don’t ask about the ½ book, it’s a long story).

As a film theorist (which is a pretentious way to say that he writes really long reviews where the actual quality of the films are usually irrelevant) Allan operates under the belief that anyone can come up with interesting insights while deconstructing Citizen Kane, Persona, The Seventh Seal, 8 ½, Badlands or Breathless, but it takes imagination, hard work and a twisted personality to do the same with Skatetown USA, Don’t Go in the House, Cheerleaders Wild Weekend or Disorderlies.

Which leads us to Vanity Fear, which was once called The House of Glib before Allan got tired of constantly telling people what “glib” meant. Its purpose is to serve as a repository for any cinematic observation Allan wishes to make that is unlikely to ever be printed anywhere else.

In addition to B-Movies and writing, we chat about his love of food and he shared many dishes he hopes others discover in Edmonton.

Here is the coveted Food list that Allan shared with us on the podcast. You have to go enjoy these local dishes in Edmonton!

Brussels Sprouts at Woodwork

Potato Fondant at Partake

Fish Tacos at Tres Carnales

Latte at Coffee Bureau

Lemon Merengue cake at Duchess

Gnocchi at Almanac

Order off the white board at Tokyo Noodle Shop

Fonduta Agnolotti at Bar Bricco

Spicy garlic miso pork ramen at Prairie Noodle House

Hot chicken at Northern Chicken

Eclairs at La Boulle

Blue steel with bacon and smoke at The Burger’s Priest

Dave Jamieson - YEG Me some Edmonton sports stories

Dave Jamieson of TSN 1260

It was so great to sit down with Dave on the YEG Me podcast. He is a man of many talents!

He once put out a raging barbecue fire with nothing more than an old dish towel and a steely glance, and he now brings his unique and informed perspective on the world of sports to the airwaves of Edmonton.

He’s a former producer, broadcaster and program director at some of the biggest radio stations on the West Coast and in Edmonton, Dave originally hales from the soft streets of Vancouver and most recently spent 14 years as the Edmonton Eskimos Director of Marketing, Communications and Broadcast as well as President of the Edmonton Rush.

He’s no stranger to goings-on behind the scenes of professional sports including his own feelings of inadequacy in a locker room.

You can listen to Dave on TSN 1260 weekdays from noon to 2 pm and he might even allow you to weigh in once in a while as he entertains, bemuses and prevents younger, more talented radio talent from establishing themselves in the market.
