Climate News: Random recognition - 'Are you a podcaster?' - thrill as follower recognises my voice

Joining a Melbourne workshop and arriving early, as I always do, I was helping a woman adjust some blinds and upon hearing me speak she said "Are you a podcaster?"

In answering yes and adding that I host "Climate Conversations", she said she was a follower. I was thrilled!

Special Event: 'Two years to save the world' - UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Simon Steill

Special Event: 'Two years to save the world' - UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Simon Steill

Executive Secretary at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Simon Steel (pictured during Q&A at London's Chatham House), has declared we have "Two years to save the world".

As a bonus, you can follow this link and go to "Outrage and Optimism" to hear an interview with Simon Steill and then listen as hosts, Tom Rivett-Carnac, Christiana Figueres and Paul Dickinson, take a deep dive into what Simon Steill said.

On climate, the world has gone from denial to procrastination. Climate inaction is no longer defended by denying the science, but because action is claimed to be ‘too costly’ or unachievable.

Yet, the time to shape a liveable future is running out, with the decisions taken over the coming two years determining how close to limiting global warming to 1.5°C we will get by the end of the century.

With more than 60 countries going to the polls this year, and nearly 90 per cent of the population in 125 countries want stronger climate action, every election is a climate change election.

We must now see climate action as a tool to create better, more equitable and cleaner societies, with solid economies built around plentiful, renewable energy.

Interview: Modern Money Lab founder, Gabrielle Bond, helps me understand the myths of deficits

Interview: Modern Money Lab founder, Gabrielle Bond, helps me understand the myths of deficits

Just 40 minutes, along with a fair bit of research, with Gabrielle Bond (pictured), the woman behind the Modern Money Lab at Adelaides Torrens University, changed, no, exploded my views about economic ideas, particularly those of Federal Government deficits.

Gabrielle is an enthusiast of the Modern Money Theory (MMT) and an ardent supporter of her contemporary from the university, Assistant Professor Steven Hail, who explained MMT through an article in The Conversation, entitled, "Explainer: what is modern monetary theory?".

In that article, he discussed one of MMT's pioneers, Professor Bill Mitchell, who has long explored the workings and application of the Modern Monetary Theory.

Of course, the real modern hero of MMT is U.S. economist, Stephanie Kelton, who can be seen in this TEDx talk "The big myth of government deficits" and again in this "Stony Brook University Presidential Lecture Series".

My journey to interview Gabrielle began when I listened to Professor Kelton in Melbourne, where she talked about many things, including the movie "Finding the Money".

It was in 2021 that reporter Gareth Hutchins wrote a story for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) entitled: "Modern Monetary Theory: How MMT is challenging the economic establishment".

Interview: My Efficient Electric Home: 'This is the best job I have ever had', Tim Forcey

Tim Forcey has delved into his experience of helping thousands of people improve the energy efficiency of their homes and written the soon-to-be-published book "My Efficient Electric Home Handbook: How to slash your energy bills, protect your health & save the planet".

He was asked about what he had learned while helping people upgrade their homes to make them more energy efficient, more comfortable, personally safe and, of course, vastly cheaper to run, Tim has realised that he has the best job in the world.

Beyond that, Tim is helping people make a significant individual difference in reducing personal and nationwide, and worldwide, planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions.

Listeners can learn more about time from his website, "Tim Forcey, Home Energy Advisor" or the Facebook page: "My Efficient Electric Home - Switching off Fossil Fuels".

It was early in the session that the host encouraged people to join the free "Climate Accord Workshop" on Wednesday, February 28, where participants will have the opportunity to discuss what is required to stop and reverse warming, against proposals from select parties and independents. It will also workshop how policy frameworks can be improved.

A recording of the Climate Cooling Mini Summit will be posted soon on the Breakthroughonline website.

Interview: University trio bring climate change adaption workshop to Shepparton - Dr Michael Spencer

Interview: University trio bring climate change adaption workshop to Shepparton - Dr Michael Spencer

Dr Michael Spencer (pictured) from Monash University and colleagues from the University of Melbourne, Dr Franz Wohlgezogen and Associate Professor, Janet Stanley, will conduct a workshop in Shepparton on Thursday, February 22.

The four-hour workshop originally targeted 30 people, but Dr Spencer said that had blown out to 40, demonstrating a wide interest in the idea of adaptation to climate change.

Following a similar event at Euroa in 2022, the workshop is part of an international research program supported by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Authority.

The workshop invite said "The research team are interested in how adaptation decision-making can be improved. For example, interactions between different levels of government and the community. How to bring all relevant parts of the community into decision-making on adaptation (including older people). If adaptation requires transformational change, are communities prepared and how does that happen."

Interview: 'As modern peoples we have become disconnected, our senses have become disconnected with nature' - Andrew Skeoch

Interview: 'As modern peoples we have become disconnected, our senses have become disconnected with nature' - Andrew Skeoch

Andrew Skeoch, the author of "Deep Listening to Nature" (pictured), believes we have lost our connection with nature and through that, we are creating the conditions that manifest as climate change.

Andrew was recently on a three-town book tour in the Goulburn Valley speaking to audiences at the Tatura, Cobram and Violet Town libraries.

When completing this episode of "Climate Conversations", The Guardian published a story that seemed relevant to what Andrew had been discussing at the GV Libraries - "The native Australian frog call quiz: is it a frog – or a distant motorbike revving?".

Andrew is nationally recognized for his sound recording and subsequently is the president of the "Wildlife Sound Recording Group".

His skills were acknowledged when he presented at Canberra's TEDx several years ago - "Hearing your place in nature".

Webinar: Climate update 2024 - Professor Mark Howden assesses where we are with the climate crisis

Professor Mark Howden (pictured), the director of the Australian National University's Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions, is optimistic and pessimistic.

Professor Howden saw last year's COP28 process as completely ambiguous. Although the conference produced some heartening eventualities for the world, there was, in his words, "Not a huge amount of good news".

Listen to this episode and you can hear where it is Professor Howden believes the world is headed in 2024.

Professor Howden said many at COP28 referred to this as the "critical decade", but he argued we are in fact in the "critical year".

Interview: A plant-based diet is good for you, and good for the planet - Dr Peter Johnston

Interview: A plant-based diet is good for you, and good for the planet - Dr Peter Johnston

Dr Peter Johnston (pictured) believes, beyond doubt, that a plant-based diet is personally beneficial and, in a broader sense, especially good for the planet.

Dr Johnston is an accredited practising dietitian, lifestyle medicine practitioner and wellness coach with a Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics and a PhD in Human Genetics.

You can learn more about Dr Johnston at the website "Perfect Human Food".

This episode of "Climate Conversations" gives you a chance to first, listen to Dr Johnston, and then, second, you can hear from U.S. cardiologist, Dr Kim Williams.

Beyond their common and passionate interest in a plant-based diet, both were at a sold-out "Dine with a Doc" event on January 13 at Melbourne's "Vegie Tribe" restaurant, Dr Johnston as a member of the advisory board with "Doctors for Nutrition" and Dr Williams as the guest speaker.

Besides listening to the audio on this episode, you can also hear Dr Williams on "The Proof" podcast talk about how "The Food We Eat Is Killing Us".

Dr Johnston is an enthusiast of Professor William E Rees and has urged anyone concerned about the world to consider what he says.

Webinar: 'Later is too late' - John Marshall of Potential Energy discusses communicating the climate crisis

Webinar: 'Later is too late' - John Marshall of Potential Energy discusses communicating the climate crisis

Anthony Leiserowitz (pictured), the founder and director of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, joined with others, including the founder and CEO of "Potential Energy", John Marshall, to talk about climate change and communication.

A few things stood out in worldwide research about the climate crisis and how to talk about it - some two billion people have never heard the term; many who have, are unsure about the fundamentals; many, however, have not only heard the term but support the need to take action; appeals to technical issues or philosophical ideas have no impact; people respond best to the thought about future generations and the fact that "later is too late".

Check out the recording of the event staged by Potential Energy.
