Poppy Champlin

Listen as Danny sits down with comic, Poppy Champlin.

Champlin is one of the quickest witted comedians working either coast today. Besides Poppy’s deep comedic chops, she has a good voice that she puts to use during each performance. She erupts onto the stage, fearless, upbeat and energetic spitting out jokes, quips, songs, impressions and even birdcalls. Poppy’s’ shows can be described as spin art – “No two alike.”

A graduate from the University of Rhode Island with a BFA in Theatre, she went to the Famed Chicago Second City Training Center and from there Tinsel town. Once in LA, Poppy continued to perform stand-up as well as study acting at the Larry Moss studios and has since put up her critically acclaimed One Woman Show, "A Chocolate Sandwich.” Most recently Poppy had a featured role in BABE a Musical at the National Women’s Music Festival as well as “Titanic The Musical” at the Courthouse Center for The Performing Arts in Kingston R.I., where she currently teaches a stand-up comedy class. “Poppy was a freakin’ ball of comedic thunder,” says one fan “The best comedian I have seen since Whoopi Goldberg,” says another. Steve Hackett talks Genesis, songwriting, and his new book!

Join Danny as he sits down with renowned musician and guitarist Steve Hackett, formerly of Genesis.

Steve Hackett is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. He was lead guitarist with Genesis as part of their classic line up with Gabriel, Collins, Banks and Rutherford, that produced acclaimed albums such as Selling England by the Pound (a favourite of John Lennon). With Steve's extraordinary versatility in both his electric guitar playing and his composing, he involves influences from many genres, including Jazz, World Music and Blues. He is equally adept in his classical albums that include renditions of pieces by composers from Bach to Satie, his own acoustic guitar compositions that have gained the admiration of many, including Yehudi Menuhin, and ambitious guitar/ orchestra albums such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic.

With Genesis, Steve's guitar playing produced some of the most memorable moments, from the sensitivity of his acoustic sound on Horizons and Blood on the Rooftops to the dramatic rock guitar solos of Firth of Fifth and Fountain of Salmacis. As he embarked on his solo career he developed his exceptional range, pushing musical boundaries into exciting areas, inventing new sounds and also techniques such as 'tapping'. His solo career went from strength to strength and the mid eighties not only saw the hit single Cell 151, but also the Steve Hackett and Steve Howe super group GTR, highly successful in America.

Shirley King, Daughter of the Blues!

Shirley King, Daughter of the Blues!

Join Danny Coleman as he sits down with the absolutely amazing daughter of the Blues Shirley King, daughter of the late legend, BB King!
- - - -
Shirley King is nicknamed "the daughter of the blues," and with good reason: her father was the legendary blues guitarist B.B. King. While Shirley shares her father's love of the blues, she's developed a sound and a style that sets her apart from her dad. A vocalist, Shirley has a big, bold style influenced by the likes of Etta James, Ruth Brown, and Koko Taylor, and her music brings classic blues styles into the present, with a dash of modern-day funk incorporated into numbers rooted in '50s and '60s blues archetypes. Her second album, 1999's Daughter of the Blues, gave her a chance to show off the range of her voice and personality, while 2020's Blues for a King saw her performing alongside Junior Wells, Elvin Bishop, Joe Louis Walker, Steve Cropper, and other legendary artists.

Steven Keene [Local!]

Steven Keene [Local!]

Join us as Danny sits down with Steven Keene Music in the 6th episode of season 2 of Rock On Podcast with Danny Coleman!

- - - -
Steven Keene grew up in Brooklyn New York and got his start playing the folk clubs and cafes of the Greenwich Village scene in the late ’80s and early ’90s alongside contemporaries Beck, Susanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, and others.

Heavily inspired by the songwriting of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Leonard Cohen, he began performing his earliest material at The Speakeasy, the now-closed folk club that was a singer-songwriter staple in the ’90s.

Keene played regularly at joints like Sun Mountain Cafe and the Chameleon, and for years would crisscross the streets of McDougal and Bleecker, playing well-known clubs including the Bottom Line, Lone Star Cafe, the Mercury Lounge, the Bitter End, Arlene’s Grocery, and the legendary CBGB’s.

But for Keene, it was always about the music, and never about the fame. Maybe that’s why he surrounded himself with only the best players, focused only on the music, and became obsessed with honing his craft as he gigged his way from one smoke-filled Village club to the next.

“Sometimes the perspective is from myself, and sometimes I’m writing a song through someone else’s eyes,” reflects Keene. “I’m not very big on insisting on explanations behind the songs I write, only because everybody’s got their own take on them, like a painting or any art form. I think less is more when it comes to talking about my own personal experience of a song.”

ABOUT RICK:

Rick has been playing and performing music since his grammar school days. He began writing music at age 14 and two years later was a regular music performer on local college radio stations. At age 16 he was scouted by Mainstream Records NYC, original label for Janis Joplin, and recorded his first demo. He continued his music passion with various bands as a lead guitarist and vocalist and in 1980 appeared on The Uncle Floyd Show with the band " Desert Fox ". The Desert Fox project drew the attention of both A & M and Columbia Records, and received a favorable review from Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1994 Rick had the pleasure of performing as a lead vocalist at an Atlantic Records original showcase which also brought positive reviews from members of their A & R department.
After over 40 years of playing in various projects, Rick has returned to his first musical love, acoustic solo performance.
He performs at various venues with a catalog of both cover and original music. Though he does the cover tunes he tries to put his own spin on them without hurting the integrity of the song. Vocal styles range from the soft ballad to the very edgy rock flavors.

In addition, for the last few years,  Rick had been backing legendary frontman and leader of The SMITHEREENS , Pat Dinizio ( RIP) , on guitar and vocals for Pat's solo shows around the country.

" One of the best singer/songwriters that I have ever worked with "  -  Pat Dinizio of The Smithereens.

To describe it best a fellow musician once described his style as:
" Powerful vocals and guitar performance.... taking you from Sweet wine..to Bourbon...and everywhere in between "

Rick Barth

Rick Barth

Danny sits down with local songwriter Rick Barth. Rick Barth is a Northwest NJ singer/songwriter that has played shows all over the NY, NJ, and PA area. Inspired to pick up a guitar by listening to KISS and, especially Ace Frehley, Rick started out in a high school cover band (Insanity) playing the hard rock and metal tunes he loved. After some time, he moved on to bar cover bands (Frozen Jones and Kwik Phix) playing all of the usual rock and pop tunes. Then, along with Cliff Doenges from Kwik Phix, he played in an acoustic duo (Two Man Group) that was playing acoustic shows long before it became the norm that it is today. After about ten years in TMG, Rick moved on to doing solo acoustic shows playing a wide mix of rock and pop covers anywhere and everywhere he could. As a result, he has been a fixture in the local music scene for a long time now. Sometime in 2014, after appearing on the Homegrown Sunday Ramble radio show to promote his cover shows, Rick was asked by the hosts (Paul and Dave) if he had any original music.  Rick played a couple of songs and, after some cajoling by the hosts, decided to record his debut album, which would go on to become Hand Me Down Soul (released in 2015). Hand Me Down Soul is a culmination of three years of writing songs and, after convincing local friends to help him, it was recorded at Supreme Sound in Woodland Park, NJ. It is available at CD Baby, Amazon, iTunes, and Rick's website, www.rickbarthnj.com. He enjoys and is influenced by a wide variety of music (from hard rock and metal to country, jazz and classical). His wide range of influences include Butch Walker, Ryan Adams, Jason Isbell, Black Crowes, Tesla, KISS, American Aquarium, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Saigon Kick, King’s X, Extreme, Chris Stapleton, and so many more. He has played some really amazing venues through the years (The Bowery Electric, Session 73, and Desmond's in New York City, The Stanhope House in Stanhope, NJ and Crossroads in Garwood, NJ, and the Sarah Street Grill in Stroudsburg, PA) as well as many local bars and restaurants throughout the tri-state area.

Laura Cheadle

Laura Cheadle

Danny Coleman sits down with Laura Cheadle. If you’re longing for some real music that you can feel in your heart, lyrics that speak to your soul, and a live performance with the power to blow the roof off the sky, you can stop right here. If you’re tired of all the staged choreography, blinding light shows, capes, costumes, lip-synching and auto-tunes that seems to have taken over live performances, you have found a place to rest, refresh, and renew. Welcome to the world of Laura Cheadle.

Along with her Family Band, she has opened for some of the biggest names in the business and won numerous awards, including “Best Indie Jazz/Blues Band” at WXPN sponsored Tri- State Indie Music Awards. She has performed on stages from NYC to London, appeared on 6ABC’s “Tuned In” as the very first viewer’s choice, the “NBC 10″ Show, and the National reality show “Next Great Family Band.” Laura was recently featured in Curve Magazine, named one of “100 Women We Love” in Go Magazine, and declared a “Super Woman” in South Jersey Magazine for her active Charity Work.

Never one to measure herself according to the trends of the times or the female singer “flavor of the month,” Laura has carved out her own lane since she began performing as a child, and she has done it the old-fashioned way, on pure talent. Gifted with a voice powerful enough to shake rafters, and tender enough to navigate the entire range of the emotional scale, Laura Cheadle is a singer commanding more than just a listen or a look. Her albums, like her concerts, are an experience. Inseparable from the truth of the songs she writes, the raw emotion that tears out of her reaches deep into your heart with the kind of performance we now only see in films like “Woodstock.”

With a vocal style that is a mesmerizing blend of soulful blues and timeless rock with both feet planted firmly in funk, she brings her own unique interpretation to every song she sings, regardless of the genre she takes on. Whether it’s a concert of her own material, a sophisticated cabaret show, or a monster blues jam at the close of a festival, what you see and hear is what you’ll always get: the undeniable and unmistakable sound of Laura Cheadle.

Paul Marzano

Paul Marzano

Danny Sits down with Paul Marzano. Paul is a New Jersey based singer-songwriter who began playing saxophone at age 9 after hearing Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther Theme" and convincing his parents to rent an alto sax from the music program at school. "I played the hell out of that sax until I was 13", says Paul. "Then one day a bell went off in my head and I became obsessed with playing bass guitar and songwriting.  Before long I sold my entire baseball card collection and bought a used bass guitar. And the journey began!" By the time Paul was in high school he was playing bass with an original band while writing and performing his music at local venues and cable TV shows.

Soon after, Paul began to focus on acoustic guitar and piano as he further developed his love of songwriting. Over the years Paul has created a vast catalogue of original music and performed at many of New York and New Jersey's notable clubs including The Bitter End, The Stone Pony and CBGB before it's final days.

Paul released a 12 song album entitled "Mood Swing Serenade" in the Summer of 2019. The album can best be described as a musical roller coaster ride with an array of sonic twists and turns. In promoting the album Paul has been featured on several radio stations, including New Jersey 101.5, KCKQ 1180 in Reno, Nevada and WVTK 92.1 FM in Vermont where his songs "Can't Imagine" and "Smile Like Hollywood" were played.  In Europe, "Smile Like Hollywood" also received air play and was added to the playlist at FOREST FM in Southern England, while in Germany the song "Breakfast in the UK" was a featured track on TurnUpYourRadio and the "Mark After Dark" show.

Mood Swing Serenade is available on most streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon. To order a copy of the CD "Mood Swing Serenade" please visit Paul's artist page at https://store.cdbaby.com/Artist/PaulMarzano

Paul continues to write and perform original music and is currently working on songs for an upcoming release in 2020.

Matt Portella

Matt Portella

Danny sits down with Matt Portella. For singer/songwriter Matt Portella, music isn’t just a passion…it’s a calling. Inspired by music at an early age, Portella was drawn to the incomparable songwriting, harmonies, and arrangements of The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and John Denver, and later by the dynamic stage presence of Kiss’ Ace Frehley. But it was always the full-bodied, raw and truthful sound of the acoustic guitar that stuck with him and would later become an integral part of his signature sound.

By 2012, Portella was ready to commit to his first full length album with a complete band.  He teamed up with bassist Fran Smith, Jr. from The Hooters and released Fractured Image in 2013. The CD was produced by Portella and co-produced by Smith and Andy Kravitz (Juliana Hatfield, Life of Agony).  Tod Howarth (Ace Frehley’s Comet, Cheap Trick) joined in on some of the backing vocals. The 10-track album which was recorded in both NJ and CA received critical acclaim from the press and fans alike for songs like ““Boys”, “Three (Everyday)” and “Funeral”. Describing the album best is Pop Break which wrote, “Fractured Image defines who Matt Portella is as a person and as an artist. The record has something for everyone no matter what genre you’re into. He has succeeded in producing a vibrant, appealing album from beginning to end and it comes highly recommended.”

Currently, Portella performs solo or with his band which is made up of Smith, drummer David Uosikkinen from The Hooters and Steve Butler from Smash Palace. His devoted fans never miss a show or a lyric. This is exactly how Portella likes it. “Both in my song writing and in my ‘day job’ as a criminal defense attorney, I use words to describe and convey emotions, thoughts and perspectives, whether to a music fan, a judge or a jury, so they see and feel what I so strongly believe in.”

Portella is a fan’s musician – approachable, humble and interested in those around him.  “I love going out and meeting as many of the people who came to the show as I can. It’s an awesome experience for me, one that I always embrace, interacting and connecting with fans after a show.  They’ve taken their time to come see me play and I want them to know how much that means to me.”  Whether in front of thousands of fans or a jury of twelve people, Portella’s energetic performances always shine.

With a sound both fresh and familiar at the same time, The Dives are continuing a journey that began two years ago. 2017 was filled with exciting firsts for The Dives as the band celebrated their debut release, Everybody’s Talkin’, featuring four original tracks, at a release party doubling as a European tour send-off. In the heart of Greenwich Village, the crowd overflowed from the performance space and, just days later, The Dives were performing their original songs for crowds that reached multiple tens of thousands at hallowed venues like London’s 02 Arena, the SSE Hydro in Glasgow and Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. The seminal rock weekly, The Aquarian, featured The Dives on their cover and the UK’s Classic Rock Magazine raved, “Songs are everything. And The Dives have them.”

2017 also came with its own challenges as there was a personnel change within the band. However, this allowed the band to regroup, hone their sound and reapply themselves to their passion. The Dives took the new line-up and new songs to Tampa Bay’s popular annual Margarita Festival and won the crowd and the festival promoters and have already been invited back for next year’s festival.
