EP:76 THE MIDDLE

This is just me and a microphone….

Trying to be honest. Trying to get better.

It’s been a hell of a year so far. I needed to get what’s in me off of my chest and out of my mouth.

Maybe together, we can find a window and let some light in.

Much love,

Rocky

EP:75 CHEF JOHN FORCIER

EP:75 CHEF JOHN FORCIER

Work Hard. Stay humble.

A saying thrown around so much, it has become a bumper sticker, rather than a mantra.

But, there are people that do it for real….Chef John Forcier is one of them.

Birthed out of one of Canadas greatest restaurants (CANOE), John came to Hamilton, and helped build some of the coolest and most relevant hospitality entities in Ontario.

If you’ve tasted anything at The French, Aberdeen Tavern, The Diplomat, or anything to do with Equal Parts Hospitality, Chef Forcier was the true north that helped shape that experience.

His work is charming, clean, refined, and ALWAYS moving forward. I see leaps and evolutions regularly on his plates and his menus should make any gourmand in Hamilton proud.

Thankfully, his relentless and beautiful hard work has helped us all find a seat at the table.

Thank you Chef, for making Hamilton so delicious.

Enjoy.

EP:74 VANESSA HEINS

EP:74 VANESSA HEINS

It took two years for Vanessa Heins and I to make this interview happen.

There was a global pandemic, a cross-province change of address, loss, healing, work, and LIFE.

Many times I wanted to leave her alone and stop pursuing the interview, but Vanessa always kept the door open and promised that when the time was right, she’d reach out.

And she did…

Her photographic work is everywhere; capturing some of the world’s most prolific artists, and though I’d love to name drop her list of major muses…I won’t, because I know that’s something Vanessa would never do.

She is still, kind, collected, honest, and can capture a perfect moment with apparent ease, as she is herself, an artist.

At the time of this episode going live, Vanessa will be on tour across Canada with City and Colour.

I dropped a name…

Enjoy.

EP:73 DAY OF CREATIVE//FUCK UP NIGHTS (Anna Di Carlo)

EP:73 DAY OF CREATIVE//FUCK UP NIGHTS (Anna Di Carlo)

Anna Di Carlo is a good human. The more time I spend with her, the more I am convinced of this. I have seen her in action with DAY OF CREATIVE (her event planning outfit specializing in creative design & social engagement), and she is GOOD at what she does. If you wanna throw a soirée and look slick doing it…call Anna. I loved working with her, and I hope to do so on the regular. Perhaps my favourite thing she’s behind is her passion project, FUCK UP NIGHTS HAMILTON. A platform for business people and creatives to share their failures, blunders, and lessons in front of a live audience. I spoke at one of these, as I have a PhD in f’ing up….and it was a humbling experience getting real about me and my shortcoming’s. Anna has figured out that the more honest we are about the losses, the better chance we have at finding the wins. Genius. Anna makes room for people. She is a host, and a giver. She is also, and equally strong, unable to put up with bullshit, and very direct….a super power I find very, very refreshing. She smiles with her eyes. Volunteers at an animal shelter. Has a big heart. Owns a dog named Dorito, and is the kind of person I wanted to sit down and chat with. So that’s what we did. EP:72 SERVIETTE MAGAZINE (Max Meighen)

This interview was planned almost two years ago, but on my way to Toronto to chat with Max Meighen of Serviette Magazine, my engine blew, and I was forced to cancel. Not a great first impression… Thankfully, he said yes to a “re-do”, allowing me to sneak one last, and long overdue interview before the year rolled over. We connected at his impressive AVLING BREWERY & KITCHEN on Queen St E; a space dedicated to creative sustainability, craftsmanship, and hospitality. If you can get there, GO. However, it is Max’s side hustle that I am here for….his magazine. “The eyes eat first” Serviette is a delicious publication. Full of images that move you and make one wanna jump in and partake. Yes, it has a beautiful face, but it has a brain and soul that grabs the reader and makes them go deeper. Within its pages is a noble effort to look at food beyond the many trends, enjoyment and consumption. The magazine is as cerebral, as it is delicious. Max has built something special with this periodical, and in time, it may become his greatest work. He’s at the beginning of his publishing efforts, but I expect big things for him and Serviette. This is a magazine that you can safely judge by its stunning covers, as it is beautiful inside and out. Enjoy. #interview #podcast #applepodcast #spotifypodcast #magazine #culinary #sustainability #microbrewery #Toronto #food #chef #brewmaster #QueenSt #serviette

EP:71 LTtheMONK

EP:71 LTtheMONK

LTtheMonk is a musical BIG BANG.

Kinda like a street party, where all the factions find common ground and have a really good time.

His sound is familiar, yet “new” in the best way, and it is a welcome shift from the current hip-hop/rap norms.

LT is hyper intelligent, owns a healthy ego AND a humility that draws you in the second he starts to speak….somehow, he makes these two traits find a nice tight harmony.

He is a young man who knows where he’s been, and he very clearly knows where he is going. All the great ones do, and I can tell you….the greatness in him will continue to get greater.

I’m a believer.

This interview was more than questions and answers. It was a genuine connection that left me content and inspired; like any good conversation should.

I’m grateful for the chance to chat with LT at this point in his career, because soon…..serious success, fan-fare, and gate-keepers will surround him, making it too hard to get in.

I snuck through, right in the nick of time.

Enjoy.

EP:70 MIKE TREBILCOCK of THE KILLJOYS

EP:70 MIKE TREBILCOCK of THE KILLJOYS

I was born in the 70’s, grew up in the 80’s, and cut my teeth as a musician in the 90’s.

I experienced the Grunge/Alt-Rock movement first hand, and it CHANGED me.

It was a paradigm shift, a sea change, and it shaped the writer/player that I am today.

I am forever grateful.

Seattle was the hotbed, but my heroes lived elsewhere, like Chicago (The Smashing Pumpkins) , U.K. (too many to mention), and here at home, in Canada.

If you were around for it, you’d agree that the 90’s was GOOD to Canadian music. And Canadian music was good to the world (Celine/Alanis/Shania).

Every province had bands worth talking about, and most major cities had a buzzy music scene worth exploring.

On our turf (Hamilton), we had Junkhouse and The Killjoys. Arguably, the two most obvious outfits making a good noise at that time; helping crank the nations neck toward our little patch of land.

The Killjoys. I liked them.

They had hooks for days, and a lo-fi, power pop thing that I really dug.

Recently, I had the honour of chatting with frontman Mike Trebilcock in front of a live audience. He told his story, sang some songs, and made a room full of strangers laugh and listen.

He in fact, made some new fans….

It was special and surreal, because it wasn’t Much Music making The Killjoys come to life. It was Mike, in the flesh, singing the songs from our youth.

I won’t forget it.

This was recorded live in Hamilton, on November 8th at the @blindbellwether during our second
@x.times.x gathering.

A thousand thank you’s to @mike_trebilcock for saying yes and bringing the 90’s to our little room.

Enjoy.

EP:69 UNFOLD (Brooke Henshall)

EP:69 UNFOLD (Brooke Henshall)

When you meet Brooke Henshall, you almost immediately wanna join her club.

That’s the truth….

She owns a tangible, gentle stillness that is calming, all the while making you feel seen…even in a busy coffee shop (she’s a barista at Sunday Blooms in Guelph).

Brooke is a special kind of special, and it is obvious she is GOING somewhere. I really wanna stick around and see where it all goes…because I know it’s going to be significant. This is why this interview is happening.

That’s it. It’s that simple.

Sometimes, you just want to be around the start of something exceptional. Like Brooke.

EP:68 L.A. WEST

EP:68 L.A. WEST

I’ve only known L.A. West since late spring of this year. However, I know her enough to say this: Meeting her was like a flash-bang. An immediate connection, giving way to a very fast friendship. Out of the gate we agreed on so much, and we could disagree on things as easily as the easy stuff. She is a creative gypsy, an old soul, and uniquely holds an aura of vintage charm and mystery. She is a Fleetwood Mac song…on vinyl. L.A. is tough, but she owns a gentle side that has a wild story to tell, and that is exactly what this interview is all about. Origins. Pain. Surviving. Learning. Creating. All the ingredients needed to be the kind of creative maker & shaker like L.A. West. Bottom line….she’s just totally cool, and she’s my pal. EP:67 OPERA (Camila Montefusco)

EP:67 OPERA (Camila Montefusco)

Camila Montefusco is a Mezzo-Soprano.

An opera singer. A rare breed with the ability to throw their voice, and fill a space like a weather system.

She herself, is a musical instrument…

When we first met for our interview, I was immediately taken aback by her poise and confidence. So much so, that I found it unnerving. Somehow, I felt exposed being near someone with that kind of silent and still strength.

Yet, she is as sweet and genuine, as she is strong. Like her voice…

Speak softly and carry a big stick; as they say.

Camila’s story is full of love, family, cultural pride and a few dramatic twists thrown into the plot:

Such as working as a professional violinist, and falling in love with another master….singing.

As she puts it, “the violin is beautiful, but vocalists have words”.

I think many of you, like myself, will rethink opera after hearing this chat.

Enjoy.

EP:66 GRAPHIC. ART. (Joel Malkin)

EP:66 GRAPHIC. ART. (Joel Malkin)

Joel Malkin does not like to talk about himself…he seems to squirm at the notion. A self-effacing gentleman, that is also really, really talented. A kind of conundrum for a guy trying to fly under the praise radar. I came across his graphic design & illustration work via Instagram, and I immediately wanted to hire him. For now however, I’ll have to settle for an interview with the man himself. His work is associated with some of the coolest restaurants, and business accounts in Canada…and there is no doubt that in time, Joel’s branding & design will become iconic. With clients like: Joe Beef, Liverpool House, Prime Seafood Palace, Willibald Farm Distillery & Brewery, Beba, Blue Goose Farm, Vin Papillon. It could be easy to mistake a list like this for name-dropping….but it’s really just a killer résumé. Joel has it in spades. Maybe if I’m lucky, I can get him to help me look cool too. EP:65 PERMANENCE OF INK (Michael Byers)

EP:65 PERMANENCE OF INK (Michael Byers)

When Michael Byers hung out at my cafe, he was always alone. Solitary. Peaceful.

Hemmed in by coffee, a sketch book, and a pen….he was the consummate artist at work.

I got to know him, and was regularly struck by his ability to turn those blank pages into something lived in, and alive. He is a lovely artist, and he has a style uniquely his own.

I’d recognize it anywhere.

Michael’s story is a good one; full of great mentors, and moments that inspired even me when hearing the tales. He is honest and immediate in his ability to share…and I’m so very grateful for that. He allowed me in, and we crushed two hours talking in no time.

He, like the rest of us, is a human trying to get better, learn, grow, and grasp gratitude while scribbling and sketching along the way.

EP:64 JACKLYN BARBER

EP:64 JACKLYN BARBER

There is deep and abiding empathy beating within Jacklyn Barber.

The lens in which she views and experiences the world, is a gift that can capture the “moments” among the endless minutes of a day.

Jacklyn is a photographer, but it’s more than that. She’s a collector. A curator of images that are alive; making you feel as though you’re looking at a memory….that’s how I feel anyway. Take a gander at her work, and I believe you will too.

This was an easy conversation. It moved down many alleys and streets, but we got to where we were wanting to go, so to speak. It was actually a perfectly unplanned talk.

There are photographers, and then there’s Jacklyn Barber.

She’s all of us, all those years ago when we had wonder…collecting fireflies in the dark, and showing us the glow.

EP:62 OUR LOSS (Annie Horton)

Grief. Loss. Death. Heartbreak.

Words and emotions that I dread, and go to great lengths to protect myself from. Yet, despite all of my efforts, I cannot outrun this inheritance of the human condition.

All of us get scathed…but some, it seems, have been given a double portion.

Annie Horton has experienced a cascading of loss these recent years, and her story of grief seems surreal and too much for anyone to bare, but somehow, she tells her tale with a compelling poise and grace.

She is a Judo move. A courageous soul absorbing hardship, and using its own violent force against itself. In other words…she’s leaned into the pain, and has learned from it.

Now, through her grief support project OUR LOSS, Annie is a guiding light and pathfinder to those lost in pain and searching for a way through.

EP:61 THE MICHELIN MAN (Chef Rob Rossi)

EP:61 THE MICHELIN MAN (Chef Rob Rossi)

In the fall of 2022, Canada was historically included in The MICHELIN Guide, which is to many, the final word on the best restaurants on the planet.

If awarded a much-lauded MICHELIN star, an establishment will join a very small, and very elite group of hospitality heavy weights.

Chef Rob Rossi (Osteria Giulia/Giulietta) knows of this intimately, as he and his team were recently awarded a prestigious star.

After my time with him, I understand why.

Chef Rossi has an incredibly warm, and available presence about him, and it made me feel immediately at home. It was humbling, and it made room for a lovely conversation.

He may be a gifted cook, but he is an even better host.

His world is slick, delicious, and bedazzled with stars….yet, I find no ego in him. Just a genuine and honest hospitality.

This must be why The MICHELIN Guide came knocking on his door.

At first glance, her sphere and brand is poised and playful. Fashion-forward and full of colour.

But, it’s when you talk with Natalie…that things start to pull into focus.

There is a deep strength in her and it is paired with an abiding ease that makes for a welcoming and honest conversation…and thankfully, that is exactly what we had.

I met Kevin while tending bar at Dark Horse Espresso in Toronto over ten years ago. He became a regular. I became a fan of his band, Broken Social Scene.

He is a beautiful soul, and a generous heart.

He was the first person I asked to come on when I started the podcast, and I knew it was a serious long shot. Yet, he replied, “I’m in…let’s do it”.

After 3 sold out nights in Hamilton, Kev hailed an Uber, showed up tired, sat at my dining room table and we had a conversation.

EP:54 STEVE KULAKOWSKY

Steve Kulakowsky & Core Urban Inc. helped set the stage and create space for Hamiltons historic wave of entrepreneurs, pioneers, and new locals. He and his team reclaimed and re-purposed many of the city’s forgotten buildings; turning little ghost towns into the hot spots and destinations we’ve come to know. He’s a local boy. A hometown believer. A world builder….literally. His efforts are on display throughout our city’s core, and I’m grateful every time I take it in; thankful that his work honours where we’ve been, and ultimately where we, as a city are heading. EP:53 CHEF MATTY COWAN (The Heather On Locke)

In 2016, Chef Matty Cowan set a new kind of table in Hamilton, Ontario with his restaurant, The Heather. A small, efficient, yet beautiful space serving only six guests each night.

The concept was surprising, the tasting menu was stunning, and the people were eating. His new epicurean space was a tiny world of wonder, and a most excellent addition to the city’s growing food scene.

Before I could get there and partake myself, it closed its doors….

Chef Cowan sits with me and talks about his journey to Hamilton, the harrowing experiences that saw The Heather close, and the serendipitous collision that brought it back to life in a new home, on a new street.

EP:51 FIGHTER (DAVID WARD)

David Ward should be dead…

A bullet, from a Glock 19 pistol was fired point blank into his head.

This was a suicide attempt.

Here’s the twist: as David’s finger was pulling on the trigger, a clear and distinct voice spoke to him and uttered three words…”Change the angle”.

This mysterious intercession saved his life.

The bullet that passed through David’s skull, managed to avoid the precious areas that would have killed him; making him another statistic. Thankfully, fate had another plan.

David Ward is a living, breathing miracle. He has a story to tell, and he does just that in this interview.

“Wardo” retired as a Sergeant and trained sniper from the Canadian Armed Forces (Army) after nineteen years of service, and multiple tours in Afghanistan.

He is a survivor. He is a fighter.

EP:50 HALF ALIVE (MY STORY)

EP:50 HALF ALIVE (MY STORY)

A while back, I had an honest conversation with a friend where I was asked “do you like yourself?”

I replied, “I have a great life. I have the love of a beautiful wife and children that I adore. I own a successful business, and I am surrounded by the best friends anyone could ever ask for. But…I hate the ME in my life. I have everything, but I don’t have myself”.

He didn’t know what to say.

I was morbidly obese; tipping the scale at 400lbs, pre-diabetic, and on my way to a serious heart attack. My light was quickly going out.

After years of this never ending cycle, I lit a match, and burned it all down.

On November 26th, 2021 , I underwent the bariatric procedure called SADI-S. An operation that would see 80% of my stomach removed and a considerable portion of my small intestine bypassed.

I had pieces of me removed. I had pieces of me returned.

One year later…I am down 182 lbs. and I am finding my way.

The following is not really a conversation about weight loss or some magic pill procedure. It is in fact, about the dark wilderness’ of life.

The place where the good stuff is made.

After a life long battle with Guttate Psoriasis, and one-too-many debilitating and demoralizing flare up’s, Cait dug deep and devised a battle plan.

This devout vegan went paleo, witnessed an immediate shift in her health/skin, and ultimately kicked her ailment in the teeth.

Through the power of FOOD…she was healed.

EP:47 REAL ONE (TOMI SWICK)

Tomi Swick is a natural. He is, perhaps the most gifted songwriter I know.

The songs…they fall outta him like a cat shedding fur. I’m not being hyperbolic with this. It is the truth.

When I first met Tomi in ‘99 he was a tall, strong athletic type. More defensive-tackle and less music-maker. So, when I first heard him sing, I was very, very confused. Never judge a book, as they say….

At that time the evolution taking place in Tomi was REAL, and I was fortunate to witness this “chrysalis” moment unfolding.

EP:44 FISHMONGER (Chef Rebecca DeWildt of Pinbones Fish Market)

Chef Rebecca DeWildt’s PINBONES FISH MARKET is a special place. You know it as soon as you walk in.

A thoughtfully curated space that only a chef with the right experience and pedigree could create. Nuanced, yet to the point.

My only criticism of Pinbones is the fact it didn’t open its doors years ago. I’d have cooked a lot more seafood.

Rebecca and I chat about our first significant taste memories, coming up in kitchens, and what it means to build a healthy work culture, and being a good leader. A lesson we’re still aspiring to learn.

Take a listen.

EP:43 FIREBRAND (Ian Pettigrew)

EP:43 FIREBRAND (Ian Pettigrew)

Ian Pettigrew is a firebrand…

He is a photographer (among other things) that creates images that are simply hard to ignore. His work pops, challenges, commands attention, and pulls you by the proverbial nose.

I am a fan of his work.

Yet..it is Ian’s efforts as an advocate that are perhaps his most impressive and impactful; the particular details of which, I will leave for the listener to discover, as it is a story worth listening to.

Mr. Pettigrew owns a stout heart, a clever mind, and a truly generous spirit, and I am grateful he has shared his story with me.

The following is a conversation with a creative using his gift to knock down walls, and shine a guiding light on some issues that really, really matter.

Enjoy.

EP:42 TYLER LORD (Creative Director for Zac Brown Band//Caroline Jones)

EP:42 TYLER LORD (Creative Director for Zac Brown Band//Caroline Jones)

The cool thing about owning a coffee shop is constantly meeting awesome people. It always amazes me how many surprises pop up in a conversation while I’m making someone an Americano.

This is how I met my guest, Tyler Lord…

During our coffee shop small talk, he shares with me his role as Creative Director for one of country music’s biggest acts, the Zac Brown Band, and for musical up-and-comer, Caroline Jones.

Tyler’s role finds him criss-crossing between home (Burlington, On) and Nashville, Tennessee regularly; including the countless dates he spends on the road touring with the band.

If there is an image, video, or aesthetic vibe coming out of the Zac Brown/Caroline Jones camp…chances are it was constructed and curated by Tyler. He is these artists’ gatekeeper and producer for all the creative content being beamed out to the world.

How Tyler arrived to his current career is a story unto itself and is proof, that if you are good at what you do, and are genuinely a nice person…the stars can align and crazy success can find you.

Enjoy.

EP:41 HOME MAKER (JOY JOHNSTON DESIGN)

EP:41 HOME MAKER (JOY JOHNSTON DESIGN)

Joy Johnston is a longtime friend. We were roommates in Toronto (one of the best seasons of my life), and I worked closely with her husband for many years.

We go back…

Yet, it was during this interview where I truly discovered my friend.

I’m realizing that when you are a “friend”, you can get familiar, fall into a rhythm, and end up only seeing a certain spectrum of the person you think you know.

JUMP TO INTERVIEW: Joy is incredibly luminous and passionate when discussing the art of home design, and when it was all over…she made me a believer. When you hear her speak on the topic, you’ll be a believer too.

Joy Johnston Design goes far beyond the paint swatches, design boards, and industry terminology. It is in fact, a business fuelled by love, and the desire to make a habitat filled with purpose, memory, and permanence.

Joy is an artist, and I’m proud to be able to shine a light on that fact. When my ship finally comes in..she’ll be designing my future home.

Enjoy.

EP:40 RENAISSANCE MAN (ALLAN GLANFIELD)

EP:40 RENAISSANCE MAN (ALLAN GLANFIELD)

Allan Glanfield does WAY too much…

He’s also way too GOOD at everything he does. A conundrum that has kept him very busy building a legacy of cool and beautiful things.

He is one of a few true “renaissance men” I know of, and he boasts a life experience and resume that is off the charts cool.

This is an interview with a passionate and talented guy; attempting to slow down, pace himself, and enjoy the simple things.

I have a feeling that his talent and vision won’t let that happen…

Enjoy.

EP:39 TOUR DE FORCE (TASHA STAR)

EP:39 TOUR DE FORCE (TASHA STAR)

“The first and best victory is to conquer self” - PLATO

There were plenty of takeaways from my chat with Tasha Star, chief among them…her devotion to discipline.

It is her true north, and it is clearly working.

Tasha has spent decades as an elite competitor (equestrian show jumping, fitness modelling, fitness-bikini competitor), and is now sharing her experiences and knowledge as a transformation coach; helping change lives and strengthen bodies.

My guest has many accolades to speak of, but above all else..Tasha is a sweet soul.

Genuinely kind, engaging, and VERY approachable. With an instagram following of 122K…I didn’t expect her to say “yes” to coming on the podcast. But, she did.

My kinda champion. Enjoy.

EP:38 CHRIS CADDELL of BIG WRECK

EP:38 CHRIS CADDELL of BIG WRECK

I have been a fan and follower of BIG WRECK for well over twenty years. I have seen them live at least five times, and have been attempting to play their tunes in vain; knowing full well I was surely playing them wrong (insane alternate tunings).

So, when Chris Caddell (rhythm guitar) said yes to coming on the podcast, I was thrilled, as he has some serious rock n’ roll pedigree.

Mr. Caddell has played with Canadian rock vocalist Sass Jordan, occasionally weaves in and out of Colin James’ blues/rock outfit, and has most recently found himself as Ian Thornley’s number two in BIG WRECK.

No. Easy. Feat.

Chris is miles away from where he started in Belleville, Ontario…yet he is humble, kind, and genuinely funny. This is a tiny glimpse into a surreal musical world that most of us will never experience.

Take a listen, and then go play some Big Wreck.

EP:37 TO HELL AND BACK AGAIN (KRISTIN NICHOLLS)

EP:37 TO HELL AND BACK AGAIN (KRISTIN NICHOLLS)

Kristin Nicholls had a serious impact on my life twenty years ago; playing a pivotal role in making church relevant and something to be proud of. A hard thing to do with a skeptic like me. Kristin eventually moved on, and the years that followed him were not kind; teaching me that a “believer” can suffer, make mistakes, and fall apart with the best of them. After watching what happened in my friends life, the realities of church quickly got real. It can be a serious mess; full of broken & flawed people in search of hope, help, and a purpose. I am one of them. So is Kristin… Kris has been crushed, but he still has his sweetness. He still sings, writes, performs, and loves God. He still has his hope. He still has his belief. And, he is still a hero of mine. This is a talk that jumps right into someone’s story of hell, and ultimately their path to redemption. Love you Kris. INSTAGRAM: the_rocky_talky_podcast

EP:36 JON D. HARVEY OF MONSTER TRUCK

EP:36 JON D. HARVEY OF MONSTER TRUCK

If Gene Simmons of KISS and a Kodiak Bear had a love child…I imagine it would sound a lot like Jon D. Harvey of MONSTER TRUCK. The man’s voice is larger than life, and I must admit, when I met him, I was very surprised by how low key his speaking voice is. Jon joins me for a super quick chat; pouring over the world of touring, writing, Christian punk & metal, and being a father while working in a successful rock n’ roll band. If you dig high octane, raunchy riffage and vocals….take a listen.

EP:35 SHE WEARS DEAD PEOPLES CLOTHES (NICOLE LIMA)

EP:35 SHE WEARS DEAD PEOPLES CLOTHES (NICOLE LIMA)

Nicole Lima wears dead peoples clothes….and she has the pictures to prove it.

She is a freelance model, vintage clothing connoisseur, ballet dancer, and curator of one of the coolest instagram feeds I’ve ever seen.

We chat about her shy beginnings as a wallflower (eating lunch alone in her schools bathroom stall), to today living front and centre in photo’s that are thematic, beautiful, and at times a little risqué.

We managed to cram in our love affair with 80’s metal, cemeteries, Whoppers (her fiancé ordered us some during our interview) and the fact that just prior to our interview that night…she got engaged. A first for our podcast.

Take a listen to a very cool and brave soul share their story. Nicole..you rule.

Enjoy.

EP:34 BUTCHER (Jamie Waldron)

EP:34 BUTCHER (Jamie Waldron)

Tucked away in a east end alley stands the garage sized workspace of J. Waldron Butchers. A tiny temple devoted to the art of butchery. The same setting where we recorded our interview…. Jamie shares with me the winding path that took him from a butchers apprentice…to today; where he is establishing himself as a premier supplier of quality cuts. His story was perilous & uncertain at times, but on his ninth life…he has landed beautifully in the back streets of Hamilton, Ontario. Take a listen. INSTAGRAM: the_rocky_talky_podcast

EP:33 SONGBIRD (Melissa Marchese)

EP:33 SONGBIRD (Melissa Marchese)

When I met with Melissa Marchese, the air conditioning was busted….and it was HOT.

Not the ideal way to start a conversation.

Yet, Melissa shrugged it off and endured the sweaty heat with a nonchalant ease.

This seems to be her mantra…

Roll with it. Survive it. Overcome it. A pattern that catches on the longer I chat with her.

Melissa does A LOT: seasoned grade school teacher, devoted yogi, musician, and a recent killer of bad habits.

We discuss the release of her very personal album, and the eight year journey it took to bring it to life.

Take a listen.

EP:32 GREY HARBOUR TATTOO

EP:32 GREY HARBOUR TATTOO

It’s possible we may be the most tattooed generation to ever walk the earth; yet we are very uninformed about the in’s-and-out’s of tattoo culture.

Tom Penny and Steven James of Grey Harbour Tattoo join me and discuss the nuanced realities of being a “tattoo artist”, and prove that it is not a career for the undisciplined or faint of heart.

After our honest round table discussion, I can honestly say that my respect for these guys is real, and that I will never, EVER bail on a tattoo appointment ever again. Like…ever.

Enjoy.

EP:31 SMASH HAIR

Ashley Urie, of SMASH HAIR believes the greatest skill a hairstylist can have, is an ability and willingness to simply…

“LISTEN”

Kinda the perfect answer, especially if you’re repping the service industry.

Ashley is COLOUR personified, and it is obvious in everything she touches.

Take a listen to this chat with my friend; a talented and passionate stylist, busy making people look and feel beautiful.

EP:30 THE LOCAL SKATE SHOP

EP:30 THE LOCAL SKATE SHOP

Jay Dworsky of THE LOCAL SKATE SHOP pops in and gives me the rundown on skate culture; describing a very real world filled with unspoken rules, etiquettes, and ideals.

Minutes into the interview, I start to get it…

Skateboarding is not wasted on the youth. It is, in fact, an ecosystem and lifelong creed shared by a multitude everywhere.

Jay is a kind of Peter Pan; young at heart and preparing the way for the next generation of skaters and Lost Boys.

Check it out.

EP:29 MATTIE LEON

Mattie Leon is a “real one”.

Great writer, great performer, and a great guy. Truly.

After a ten year absence of bumping into each other at gigs, we re-connect, and regale each other about getting older, staying artistically hungry, musical success, and outrunning life’s ticking clock.

This is us talking shop……

EP:28 STRIPPER (“RAVEN”)

EP:28 STRIPPER (“RAVEN”)

Strippers…

What drives a person to get naked and dance in a dark room full of voyeurs?

Desperation? Quick money? Troubled past?

If you’re asking my friend Sydney (Raven), she’d simply tell you that, she strips because she likes to strip.

No more, no less….

My guest is a wife, step-mom, home owner, government employee, and a human juxtaposition that had me pivoting, laughing and at times, speechless.

This episode manages to poke at the norm, while gently nudging the risqué toward a space where the safe things live……the proverbial middle.

Take a listen.
