Unlocking True Health: Why Ditching Weight Loss Obsessions Lead to Happier Lives & Greater Overall Well-Being

Is weight loss really the answer to health, happiness, success and self-love? In this episode, we explore weight-centric and weight-neutral approaches to health and well-being.

I share my approach to weight neutrality, the advantages it offers, including the benefits for mental, emotional, and physical health.

I also explore why a weight-neutral approach is far superior to the outdated and unsuccessful paradigm of a weight-centric approach and illustrate real-world outcomes through a series of short stories, showcasing the contrasting results of each approach.

If You Want To Eat Healthy, Contrary To Popular Opinion, This Is Actually The Best Way (Pt 2 of 2)

If You Want To Eat Healthy, Contrary To Popular Opinion, This Is Actually The Best Way (Pt 2 of 2)

The truly healthiest way to eat is to eat whatever you want, whenever you want, even as much as you want.

I’d even argue that despite what diets, “healthy eating plans” and really the whole health and wellness industry as a whole need you to believe, it’s the only way to actually eat healthy. In this (and the last) episode, I’m talking about the science of nutrition (the last episode), explaining why I say eating what you want is the healthiest way to eat and exactly what I mean (and don't mean) by it (this episode).

Before you decide I'm nuts, give these two a listen.

Natalie's super inspiring transformation

Natalie's super inspiring transformation

In this episode, I chat with another of my clients, Natalie. When she started with me, she was bingeing and restricting. She lived with fear and rules around every food in her house, fear and obsession over weight gain, body hate and judgment all so severe that she was on depression and anxiety meds and told her doctor she didn't want to keep living if she had to live like that.

You won't believe where she's at now. Tune in to find out.

When Permission Doesn't Work

When Permission Doesn't Work

I often talk a lot about releasing food rules and giving ourselves permission to eat what we want but what happens when it feels terrifying and every time you try it for a little while, it feels like it doesn't work and you still feel obsessed with food or end up overeating or bingeing?

That's what I'm talking about in this episode. I have a group of testers going through a new program I'm releasing soon and she sent me an email about the permission element this morning with common questions and concerns so I wanted to address them for anyone else who may feel the way she did.

So your pants are tight... now what?

So your pants are tight... now what?

Imagine this scenario... you’re minding your own business, standing there in your bedroom getting dressed.

As you’re pulling up your favorite pair of pants, you notice they feel tighter than they felt the last time you wore them.

What happens?

The voice in your head that insists on obsessively narrating every waking second of your life, says… “uh oh, these weren’t this tight before.”

Then what happens?

In this episode, I'm sharing how that scenario typically plays out for most - how it used to play out for me.

I'm also sharing a different way to approach it. A more helpful, effective and productive way.

And how it turns out when you make those changes.

Get Out of Your Way - The Workshop

Get Out of Your Way - The Workshop

Tune in this week for the recording from the workshop I recently hosted with leadership coach and my friend Dana Lloyd and learn to get out of your own way.

I share:

➔ how to redefine your own version of what it means to eat and live healthy and why it’s important that you do
➔ why healthy eating habits are so hard to stick to & why weight loss never sticks
➔ 3 of the biggest causes of binge eating or feeling out of control around food
➔ why “healthy living” doesn’t actually require a "lifestyle change", but what it does require
➔ how to gain freedom from dieting/constant broken promises to “eat healthier”, “be good with food” or lose weight and start rebuilding self and body trust

Dana shares:

➔ the scale she uses to find her Joy & connect to her Authentic Self

➔ how knowing your Values can provide you fulfillment and she shows you an example of how to discover yours

➔ how you can use your values to provide Direction in your life

➔ how to identify your Inner Critic, the role it plays and how to change your narrative

Let's talk about what no one wants to talk about

Let's talk about what no one wants to talk about

Last week was #BellLetsTalk day and for the occasion, I wanted to talk about what nobody ever seems to want to talk about. The truth behind even seemingly "successful" diets because my story is NOT unique & we HAVE to stop acting like promoting diets and weight loss is healthy (mentally or otherwise).

So, in this episode, I'm again sharing my diet "success" because my story is not unique, varying degrees of it have become the norm and rarely, in discussions about mental health does anyone ever talk about the very real negative mental (and physical) health consequences of dieting and "healthy eating".

Body connection and trust are key elements for building not only a healthier relationship with food but healthier eating habits in general but they're practices that can be difficult to grasp and can often bring up a lot of resistance.

In this episode, I share a client example, talk about some of the reasons why there can be so much resistance and I walk you through a super simple little beginning practice.

Why is it so hard to trust ourselves with food?

Why is it so hard to trust ourselves with food?

A survey of American women done in 2008 found that something like 75% had disordered eating habits.

And based on experience, I’m sure the results in most of the rest of the industrialized world where capitalism reigns supreme would be pretty much on par with those.

One major way in which disordered eating habits manifest themselves in our lives is through distrust.

Distrust in ourselves, and distrust in our own ability to decide what, when and how much we should be eating.

In this episode, I'm talking about why trusting ourselves with food can feel so hard when it's actually our natural state.

The Key To Moving More Isn't Motivation, It's This

As with the relationships I had with my body and food, my relationship with exercise was pretty messed up most of my life and this destructive relationship with exercise is something I've seen in almost every woman I've worked with since I became a trainer in 2010.

In this episode, I'm sharing how my relationship with it has changed in the last number of ways (in the most wonderful ways) and I'm sharing 4 tips you can use to work on improving yours and why it's so important.

Tune in if you're sick of the "on track" and "off track" cycle with exercise and always feel like you're trying to convince yourself to "be more active".

When you want to binge - a client example of understanding what can drive the desire to binge

In this week’s episode, I wanted to talk about some messages I recently got from one of our newest members in the Cognitive Eating Academy because they were a beautiful real-time example of some of what keeps us from wanting to eat things that help us feel our best… an example of the things that drive self-sabotaging or self-destructive eating patterns… even bingeing.

Her message started with, "I feel like I'm on the verge of a binge"

Tune in to learn what we discovered about what was driving it and how we got her through it (without bingeing) and ultimately feeling better.

Why don't you feel good?

Last night on a call with my CE group, one of the gals started her update with the comments about how messed up her stomach had been feeling in the days prior.

She’d been experiencing abdominal pain, constipation, bloating, cramps... you name it.

Most people would have started telling her what to change in her eating habits to improve her symptoms but that's not what I did. In this episode, I'm sharing why I didn't take that approach, what I did instead, why it worked and why this may the key you need to start feeling better in your own body.

On trusting, making friends with and listening to our bodies

On trusting, making friends with and listening to our bodies

Heart screams run. Body says, nope. Which do I listen to?

Back in 2007 when I started my “fitness journey” (god I hate that phrase now) within a couple months of walking, I started running. And predictably, got obsessive about it.

So obsessive in fact that within about 3 months I went from being completely inactive for years to running 10ks up to 5 or more days a week.

Do you know what happens when you go from inactive to obsessively exercising in a short period of time? I do!

Tune in as I share the surprising blessings that came from years of injuries and pain. And how changing the way I looked at those things, changed everything, including helped to change how I ate.
