Rhizome Podcast

By Roots4Change

Rhizome Podcast is a youth-led story-telling project of Roots4Change. We explore four key human rights issues impacting youth in Alberta, amplifying youth voices and their lived experiences in our communities. These issues include food security in migrant populations, the experience of a Black Muslim woman in Alberta, sex education in the public school system, and community responses to anti-Asian racism.

Roots4Change is supported by the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights and funded by the Edmonton Community Foundation. Thank you to CJSR 88.5 FM for broadcasting this production!

Cultural and Community Work in Chinatown with aiya哎呀 collective

In our final episode of this series on the Rhizome Podcast, we explore what it means to collectively resist and heal together in effect of the ongoing displacement and cultural erasure of Chinatown. Especially with the rise of violence towards Asian people during Covid, we wanted to highlight how a local force in our community have been responding to anti-Asian racism, neoliberal capitalism, and colonialism.

In this episode, we talked with Shawn Tse 謝兆龍, a member from aiya哎呀 collective. aiya哎呀 is an intergenerational group of artists and cultural workers offering spaces to remember the emotional and geographic loss of amiskwacîwâskahikan -- particularly in its Chinatown. aiya哎呀 works to form openings for liberation and belonging. Although we only hear from Shawn in this episode, the core members of aiya哎呀 collective include: Grace Law, Lan Chan-Marples, Wai-Ling Lennon, and Shawn Tse.

Follow aiya哎呀 on Instagram and Facebook to keep updated on their work.

Jeremiah (he/him) is a Public Educator and WiseGuyz facilitator with the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton. WiseGuyz is a healthy relationships and healthy sexuality program for boys and masculine youth.
