By FPCS

Roots and Foundations is a podcast to help look at the overview of scripture. This podcast is a supplement for the First Presbyterian Church of Sharpsville's Roots and Foundations class on Sunday Mornings. We start our discussion based on the material put out by the Bible Project (www.thebibleproject.com) where we talk about the themes of the different books in the Bible.

Joel

Joel

This week Nicole and Jeremy look at the book of Joel. Joel is our first prophet whose location and time frame isn't really clear within the text itself. Joel is also a fairly short book only containing three chapters. Despite its length and uncertain time frame, Joel looks at the rather big idea of the Day of the Lord and what this means for Israel and the whole world. Join us as we unpack the book of Joel.

Hosea

Hosea

This week Jeremy looks at the book of Hosea, the first of the minor prophets. As one of the minor prophets it is not nearly as long as the prophetic books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, or Ezekiel, but still is a very interesting book. Hosea takes a look at God's faithfulness despite our unfaithfulness. While in some ways this message may not seem too difficult, but the way Hosea presents this is very interesting.

Ezekiel

Ezekiel

This week Nicole and Jeremy look at the final major prophet, Ezekiel. Ezekiel's message is very similar to the other prophets that we've gone through, but Ezekiel's message is probably the most visual of all the prophets so far. His use of actions, the amount of visions, and his use of analogy makes for an interesting book. Join us as we provide an overview for the book.

Jeremiah

Jeremiah

This week we look at the Book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah is one of the major prophets who has an unpopular message to give the people of Jerusalem. We look at that message and how that message relates to us today who live outside of the events during the life of Jerusalem.

Isaiah

Isaiah

This week Nicole and Jeremy tackle the book of Isaiah. Isaiah is one of the first prophetic books where we get the actual writings of the prophet. Isaiah is also a rather substantial book, but we try our best to hit the major themes and give an idea of what Isaiah is all about. That's why this week's podcast is a bit longer than our usual, but we hope that you're able to enjoy.

Kings

Kings

This week Nicole and Jeremy tackle the both 1 and 2 Kings. These two books really tell one story and make up one book, but are simply divided into two due to length. So join us as we tackle the story of Kings and try to give a sense of what is going on with the book.

2 Samuel

2 Samuel

Nicole and Jeremy look at the second half of the book of Samuel, what we typically call 2 Samuel. This continues the story and themes started in 1 Samuel and this time focuses almost exclusively on the life of David after he ascends to the throne proper. So join us as we look at an overview of 2 Samuel this week.

1 Samuel

1 Samuel

This week Nicole and Jeremy are looking at the first part of the book of Samuel, known to us as 1 Samuel. It's a book full of stories and while we go into some of the stories, we try to hit on the major theme of the book and how that's played out in some of the situations presented, particularly pride and humility. So join us as we look at the book of 1 Samuel.

Judges

Judges

The book of Judges can be a difficult book to understand while you're reading it. It has stories that aren't very family friendly or wholesome. Stories that seem to be violent and horrific. So what's going on with this book, why is it in the Bible? Those are some of the questions that Nicole and Jeremy will be tackling this week. So strap yourselves in and get ready for a look at the rocky book of Judges.

Joshua

Joshua

We're now out of the Torah and into the Nevi'im (The Prophets) and the first book of this section is the book of Joshua. Joshua picks up after Deuteronomy. Israel is again just outside of the Promised Land and is getting ready to enter it and begin to oust the Canaanites from the land under the leadership of Joshua. Nicole and Jeremy look at this book and point out some of the main themes and highlights as to what the book is about.

TaNaK

TaNaK

This week Nicole and Jeremy are taking a bit of a different approach and instead of focusing on a book of the Bible the focus is on a different way that the Old Testament is organized from the way our English Bibles tend to be organized. This is not a correct way or incorrect way, but rather just a different way of approaching the Old Testament. This is called the TaNak, which stands for Torah (instruction), Nevi'im (prophets), and Ketuvim (writings), it is also the order we're going to be using as we go through the Bible.

Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy

This week Nicole and Jeremy take a look at Deuteronomy, the last book of what is called the Torah or Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible). Deuteronomy ends this set of books with a call to remember God, how He has interacted with the Israelites, and also what following God as a nation is to look like. So join us to look at what God is calling Israel and in some ways us today to remember about Him.

Numbers

Numbers

This week we tackle the book of Numbers. It may not sound like the most exciting book, but actually Numbers has more narrative than you might expect. Join Nicole and Jeremy as we unpack what is in the book of Numbers and how it fits into the story so far.

Leviticus

Leviticus

This week we look at the book of Leviticus. If you've ever tried to read the Bible from the very beginning this is most likely the book that really tripped you up. Nicole and Jeremy take a look at the structure of the book and try to help make sense of what the book is trying to do. We're using the videos and study guides from www.thebibleproject.com as kind of a base to start this discussion, so feel free to take a look there for some of the visuals we're trying to verbally present in this video.

Exodus 19-40

Exodus 19-40

This week Nicole and Jeremy get into the lesser known parts of Exodus. While many are familiar with the 10 Commandments or even the golden calf, there the rest of these chapters are not that well known. So join us as we take a look at what's going on in these chapters in Exodus. Also if there are any questions about Exodus 19-40, feel free to contact either Nicole or Jeremy with your questions.

Exodus 1-18

Exodus 1-18

The story of Moses and the Exodus from Egypt is one of the most well known stories from the Bible, in part due to popular movies like The Ten Commandments and The Prince of Egypt. Today Nicole and Jeremy look at this story and what's going on in this struggle between God and Pharaoh for the fate of the Israelites.

Genesis 12-50

Genesis 12-50

This episode we look at the second part of Genesis and follow the story of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. We follow the way their stories play out, but also look at some bigger themes that are at work within this section.  Hopefully all of this helps to better understand the flow of Genesis and where it fits within the larger story of the Bible.

Genesis 1-11

Genesis 1-11

Our first episode of the Roots and Foundations podcast. Jeremy Manuel and Nicole Carlin discuss some of the themes in the first section of Genesis. Being that we're in Genesis we talk about the creation narrative, how God made humans in his image, about the reality and repercussions of sin in the world and how God, even from the beginning has sought to bring humans back in relationship with him. This is our first attempt and hopefully you'll enjoy going on this journey with us.
