Kieran Crowley 🇮🇹 & Nicole Crowley 🇨🇦 | Episode 33

Hosts Dallen Stanford & Robin MacDowell are joined by legends Kieran and Nicole Crowley for #RugbyHive Episode 33.

Kieran played in the backline for the All Blacks from 1983-1991 (19 Caps) winning the 1987 Rugby World Cup on home soil. He was also part of the New Zealand team that won the Bledisloe Cup in 1985, 1990 and 1991. Kieran played 199 times for club team Taranaki, scoring 1,723 points, and later coached Taranaki from 1998-2007.

Kieran spent eight years coaching the Canadian Men’s 15s team, taking them to the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups. He then spent five seasons with Benetton in Italy, which is when this interview was recorded during 2020. Since we spoke, Kieran was named Coach of the Year while at Benetton Rugby guiding them to a Pro 14 Rainbow Cup Championship (2021), before being selected as the Head Coach of Italy in May of 2021. He led Italy to a 22-21 win over Wales in the 2021 Six Nations, and then recorded one of the biggest upsets to date for the Azzurri by defeating Australia 28-27 in the Autumn tours of 2022.

Kieran’s daughter, Nicole, also grew up New Zealand until she moved to Canada with her family at 12 years of age. She played for Team BC in 7s and 15s, captaining them to a National Championship. At just 18 years old while completing an internship at Rugby Canada, Nicole got the opportunity to become Manager of the Canada Women’s 15s team. From there she worked on contract with Rugby Canada while finishing her Business degree at the University of Victoria, where she was also a member of the UVic Vikes rugby team. Nicole managed the Women’s 15s side through their 2017 World Cup campaign as well as the Women’s 7s team to the Pan American Games, HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and Olympic Qualification.

Since our interview, Nicole moved North with her partner (who works in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police), living in the remote sub-Arctic in the Northwest Territories, in a town of only 450 people and with no roads connecting it to other towns. Nicole is the Director of Recreation for the municipality where she is highly involved with Special Olympics NT and Sport North, where she works to help disadvantaged and remote kids from communities like hers, access sporting opportunities.

In this episode we talk about Kieran and Nicole’s rugby backgrounds, their accomplishments in the sport, and how they both used rugby as a vehicle to live and work in different countries and experience new cultures.

Hosts Dallen Stanford & Robin MacDowell are joined by legend Tiana Penitani for #RugbyHive Episode 7.

Penitani co-captained Australia in 2014 to a Gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. The tournament was her first in 14 months, following a serious knee injury sustained at the 2013 Sevens World Cup. At 17 years and 163 days old, Penitani became Australia's youngest ever representative in either 15s or 7s at a World Cup, when she represented Australia in Russia.

Shortly thereafter she was a member of the first ever Australian side to win the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in 2015/2016, winning tournaments in Dubai, Sao Paulo and Atlanta. To date New Zealand has won the Women's Sevens Series 6 times, with Australia claiming two seasons including 2017/2018.

In today’s episode we talk about representing her country at the Sevens World Cup while still in High School.

We chat about her family, the tribute to her father who she lost at a very young age, we also delve into being on the Olympic Games 2016 squad but having to withdraw due to injury. Her country would go on to win Gold in Rio de Janeiro. Penitani has some brilliant advice for us all about coping with depression and the ego placing value on one’s achievements.

We talk about switching codes to represent Australia in league (Jillaroos) and take part in the 2019 Rugby League World Cup 9s - all before the age of 24.

Hosts Dallen Stanford & Robin MacDowell are joined by legends Mike Friday and Henry Paul for #RugbyHive Episode 6.

Mike Friday is one of the most successful Sevens coaches of all-time. He led England to four consecutive Hong Kong 7s titles (2002-2006), placed 3rd on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in 2005 and 2nd in 2006, with Henry Paul being a standout member of that talented squad, including a Silver Medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. More recently he turned potential into podium finishes with Team USA, climbing the ladder from 13th in 2014 to Series runners-up in 2019. His side was the most consistent team on the planet in 2018/2019 playing in all 10 semi finals.

Friday will take the USA Eagles for the second time to the Olympic Games, this time it’s Japan 2021. The former England 7s captain, is also a two-time winner of the Tetley Cup with London Wasps.

So much so that he represented New Zealand in league 24 times from 1995 to 2001, scoring 121 points and playing in two Rugby League World Cups. The following year he debuted for England in union, playing in 6 Tests from 2002 to 2004 and later the Sevens World Series.

He has played over 500 professional club matches. In league he won the Challenge Cup at Wembley in London on two occasions and has represented: Wakefield Trinity,  Wigan (147 matches, scoring 550 points and winning the Super League Grand Final), Bradford Bulls (100 matches, amassing a remarkable 960 points and winning the Super League Grand Final), Harlequins (63 matches, scoring 240 points). In union he has won the Zurich Premiership and Powergen Cup and has represented: Bath, Gloucester (116 matches, scoring 802 pints), Leeds Carnegie and Rotherham. Paul also won a Silver Medal in 7s at the 2006 Commonwealth Games for England. He has coached Russia in 7s and 15s and is the current Canadian 7s Head Coach preparing for the Olympic Games in Japan.

In today’s episode we talk about the England 7s program being cut by the RFU in 2020 ahead of the 2021 Olympics. We go down memory lane when Paul played for Friday on the Sevens World Series, as well as how he was able to represent both New Zealand and England. We delve into their coaching journeys, how their programs in USA and Canada are preparing for the Olympic Games and what it’s like coaching against each other.

What was touring like in the early years? Why is Friday nicknamed Geyser? And why are Russians the friendliest people on earth?

Osea Kolinisau 🇫🇯 | Episode 5

Hosts Dallen Stanford & Robin MacDowell are joined by Fijian legend Osea Kolinisau for #RugbyHive Episode 5

Kolinisau is the most capped Fijian 7s player of all-time, with 62 tournament appearances on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series from 2008 to 2016. He is the scorer of a record 1,272 points - the only Fijian ahead of him is the King of Sevens, Waisale Serevi.

Kolinisau captained Fiji to back-to-back HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series titles in 2014/2015 and 2015/2016, the first and only time his country has achieved this honor. He was the flag bearer for Team Fiji at the 2016 Rio Olympics. At that event Kolinisau captained Fiji and led them to the Gold medal, claiming Fiji’s first ever medal at an Olympic Games. His side would go on to beat Great Britain 43-7 in the final.

In today’s episode we talk about growing up in Suva, Fiji, and his aspirations as a young boy. We talk about debuting for Fiji and the influence of Waisale Serevi. We talk about a foreign coach in Ben Ryan taking the helm of Fiji during the World Series and the Olympic Games. We talk about Cyclone Winston and Fiji winning the 2016 USA Sevens in Las Vegas, and how rugby can inspire hope.

What was the Olympic Games like? What was the mindset going into the knockout stages? How massive is the rivalry with the All Black 7s? How is living in Houston, Texas, playing for the Houston SaberCats in Major League Rugby?

We cover all these topics including being on the Fijian $7 bill, supporting the Springboks and advice for aspiring young rugby players around the world.
