Hate Running? You should try Couch to 5K

Hate Running? You should try Couch to 5K

I never thought I could be a runner and at 37 I thought I was probably too old to try something new. I had knackered knees, I was overweight, I didn’t think I had the time, and I was probably a little intimidated by who I thought a runner was.

I found Couch to 5k amazing and it really has changed my life and I've gone from not running at all to completing a Marathon.

FYI: This episode was originally a video recorded in October 2019, before running my marathon.

Couch to 5k is popular because it works. I could end there but here are some other reasons.

  • It’s free – Yes there are some clubs who will charge for it, but there are many who offer free sessions, and you can always take the course for free by using one of the many apps available.
  • It only takes 9 weeks – Each week generally has three training sessions and initially start with intervals of 60 seconds of running and 90 seconds of walking for example. Over the weeks the running will increase and you will take less walking breaks until you are solidly running.
  • It fits around you – The sessions are 30 minutes long, so you can run before work, in your lunch break, or even in the evenings.
  • It’s achievable – 5km isn’t too daunting….okay well it can be if you’ve never run, but we’re not asking you to run a marathon.
  • You feel great at the end – When you complete Couch to 5k you will feel an amazing sense of achievement.

If you stick with it then that’s amazing but some people will never like running and it just isn’t something for them.

If you decide it’s not for you then that’s fine too, but at least you gave it a go, and can go and try something new.
