Luke 10:38-42 - Learning

Luke 10:38-42 - Learning

Jesus tells us that there is one necessary thing for every disciple. Just one! In a culture overburdened and carried away with multi-tasking, Jesus is an advocate for mono-tasking.

Luke 10:25-37 - Serving

Luke 10:25-37 - Serving

With the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus teaches us to see our neighbours with new eyes. Yet in order to see with new eyes, we will need new hearts.

Luke 10:1-24 - Messengers

Luke 10:1-24 - Messengers

Jesus sends his followers out as messengers to proclaim a powerful message that results in joy. We may imagine that the 'harvest is meager and the workers are just about adequate', but Jesus corrects our thinking. There are many people that are ready to come to Christ if only they can hear the message.

Luke 9:51-62 - Cost

Luke 9:51-62 - Cost

Where are you heading in life? Jesus' destination was heavenly glory, but his path there went through Jerusalem. Christian disciples are headed for glory with him, but to get there we must walk the path of the cross. It is a journey that gives meaning, purpose and joy. But it is a hard path.

Psalm 103 - Prayer Of Gratitude

Psalm 103 - Prayer Of Gratitude

Unthankfulness comes to all of us very easily. When it is allowed to take root and grow in our souls, it produces all manner of corruption and wickedness. The Psalms shows us how to uproot unthankfulness with prayer, so that we can become people overflowing with gratitude.

Psalm 25 - Prayer for Guidance

Psalm 25 - Prayer for Guidance

How do you know when God is guiding you? Can you tell the difference between his leading and your own strong desires? Psalm 25 is a prayer that helps us be the kind of people whom God guides.

Psalm 95 - Morning Prayer To Frame The Day

Psalm 95 - Morning Prayer To Frame The Day

Worship is the only thing that will transform us. But worship means ascribing worth to something in a way that engages our whole being - our emotions, our will and our mind. Is your whole life worship?

Psalm 4 - Evening Prayer For A Quiet Night & A Perfect End

Psalm 4 - Evening Prayer For A Quiet Night & A Perfect End

When worries, anger and other things keep us awake at night, how can prayer help? David gives us a model for evening prayers that have helped God's people down through history to have secure sleep.

Psalm 2 - Praying To The King

Psalm 2 - Praying To The King

God has established his king on earth. Our rebellion against God's king leads to perishing. Embracing God's king gives life. This reality should give form and content to our prayer life.

Revelation 22 - The New Creation II

Revelation 22 - The New Creation II

The New Creation will not only restore all things to the goodness of God's original design, but it will actually exceed the goodness of the original. Christians are therefore a people overflowing with hope. The Christian hope for the future shapes the Christian life in the present.

Revelation 21 - The New Creation I

Revelation 21 - The New Creation I

Is a better world possible? Yes! Not only possible, but certainly coming. Yet it is not within our power to bring it about. Our great hope is that one day God will make all things new.

Revelation 19:11-20:15 - The Victorious Christ

Revelation 19:11-20:15 - The Victorious Christ

When Christ comes again in glory, he will come as a conquering king, waging war with the sword of his mouth. He will defeat his enemies and cast them away. He will judge the living and the dead by two books. Is your name in the book of life?

Revelation 17:1-19:10 - The Fall of Babylon

Revelation 17:1-19:10 - The Fall of Babylon

The world system which opposes God and persecutes his people is coming to an end. Those who have been complicit with it and profited from it will mourn its passing. But those who have been invited to the supper of the lamb will rejoice.

Revelation 15:5-16:21 - The Seven Last Plagues

Revelation 15:5-16:21 - The Seven Last Plagues

The whole world system will come under God's righteous judgment for shedding the blood of his holy people. That is good news that frees us to live radically distinct lives in the present.

Revelation 14:1-15:4 - The Harvest

Revelation 14:1-15:4 - The Harvest

What could motivate someone to persevere in following Christ through persecution, when it would often be so much easier to give up? Revelation 14 gives us a window on two very different final destinations. Those who follow the lamb to victory will sing songs of endless praise. Those who follow the dragon will suffer defeat and endless torment.

Revelation 13 - The Two Beasts

Revelation 13 - The Two Beasts

Between Jesus' ascension and his return, the book of Revelation tells us that Satan rages on the earth. Chapter 13 reveals his favourite tactics - he turns the state and false religion into beasts that attack the church. Those who have ears to hear will be able to patiently endure.

Revelation 12 - The Woman and The Dragon

Revelation 12 - The Woman and The Dragon

For the "inhabitants of the earth", Satan is a powerful source of horror. For the Christians, he is a defeated enemy. For all his raging, God laughs and Christians are invited to do the same.

Revelation 10-11 - The Two Witnesses

Revelation 10-11 - The Two Witnesses

God commissions the church to be His faithful witness to the world, even in times of suffering and persecution. In the life, death and resurrection of the church, God's power is displayed.

Revelation 8:6-9:21 - The Judgements of History

Revelation 8:6-9:21 - The Judgements of History

After the 7 Seals reveal God's plan for history with a focus on the redeemed, the 7 trumpets show the same plan with a focus on the "inhabitants of the Earth". God's judgements are already evident in both the natural and supernatural evil we see in our world. It is just severe enough to drive everyone to despair or dependence.

Revelation 7:1-8:5 - The Security Of The Saints

Revelation 7:1-8:5 - The Security Of The Saints

Amidst all the tribulations that will certainly assail us, Christians are utterly secure. God has set his seal on his people, so that they will not only be preserved through suffering, but also - one day - praise God all the more because of the trials.

Revelation 6 - The Seals of Destiny

Revelation 6 - The Seals of Destiny

Revelation tells us that whatever it might look like around us, Christ is securely on the throne ruling over all things. In chapter 6 we begin to see His unfolding plan for history. When Christ sends his church out into the world to bring redemption and judgement to the ends of the earth, persecution follows. But Christ and his people are vindicated in the end.

Revelation 4-5 - The Lamb On The Throne

Revelation 4-5 - The Lamb On The Throne

We were made to worship, but who or what will we worship? The secular liturgies of our culture train us to desire and worship the earthly kingdom. The book of Revelation opens a window on the liturgy of heaven and shows us the only one who is worthy of worship. As we join our voices with all creation in praise to him, we find our purpose.

Revelation 2-3 - Letters From The Lord

Revelation 2-3 - Letters From The Lord

Jesus wrote 7 letters to 7 churches delivering 7 different verdicts on their spiritual health. What can we learn from them today? We are part of a local church body where people are being discipled together. A compromised Christian witness is our greatest spiritual danger. Drawing near to him is the only guarantee of victory.

Revelation 1 - Hope Unveiled

Revelation 1 - Hope Unveiled

The source and content of what is revealed in the Book of Revelation is Jesus Christ. The book applies to churches in every era and location, encouraging hope and endurance among Christians. Because it shows us that Christ draws near to his people in reassurance as he directs history towards his return.

Matthew 23:1-39 - A Warning For Hypocrites

Matthew 23:1-39 - A Warning For Hypocrites

Hypocrisy is ugly, and is especially egregious when found among the people of God. The good news is God hates it and Christ condemns it. That is also the bad news for anyone whose words and deeds have not aligned. But Jesus is merciful and longs to protect us from the coming judgment.

Matthew 22:41-46 - Whose Son Is He?

Matthew 22:41-46 - Whose Son Is He?

After he had responded to their arguments, Jesus finally posed an argument of his own. After he had made his case "no one dared to ask him another question". How did he make an unanswerable case for skeptics to put their faith in him? He showed them what the scriptures say about him. And it is the key to faith, evangelism and spiritual growth.

Matthew 22:15-40 - Arguing With Jesus

Matthew 22:15-40 - Arguing With Jesus

When someone opposes the Christian faith - whether with arguments or with ridicule - how do you respond? Jesus shows us that we need never fear those who oppose the truth. Jesus goes on the offence against opposition, rebuking sin, arguing against error and calling people to faith in the true and living God.

Matthew 22:1-14 - An Invitation From The King

Matthew 22:1-14 - An Invitation From The King

Jesus says that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a wonderfully generous feast prepared for people... who don't turn up! How does God respond to the rebellious rejection of some? He calls others to feast with him. Have you come to the feast?

Hebrews 4:1-13 - Perfect Rest For The People Of God

Hebrews 4:1-13 - Perfect Rest For The People Of God

In order to know if we are making progress, we have to know where we are going. The Scriptures tells us that the end goal for all of creation is entering the restful enjoyment of God. Are you making progress?

Isaiah 56 & Jeremiah 17:19-27 - God Critiqued Our Rest

Isaiah 56 & Jeremiah 17:19-27 - God Critiqued Our Rest

Why do the Prophets put such emphasis on the Sabbath-keeping? It is because it is a sign of the covenant between God and his people. If they know God as their creator and redeemer they will rest. If they reject rest, they deny God.

Isaiah 12 - Wells Of Salvation

Isaiah 12 - Wells Of Salvation

Sometimes the difficulties of life can feel like the intense heat of the desert sun bearing down on us. We will not survive for very long without spiritual refreshment. Will there be enough? Where can we find it? Isaiah tells us that there are wells of salvation along our journey's path.

Genesis 22 - The Test

Genesis 22 - The Test

In Abraham's final test, we discover the essence of God's call, the response of faith, and the provision of the lamb. Even when we can't see our way though a situation, faith means trusting that the LORD will see to it.

Genesis 21 - Covenant Laughter And Sorrow

Genesis 21 - Covenant Laughter And Sorrow

There is joy and laughter in the fulfillment of God's covenant promises. Recognising the sheer impossibility of his works gives great security to Christians.

Genesis 20 - When We Are Faithless God Is Faithful

Genesis 20 - When We Are Faithless God Is Faithful

When His people are radically faithless and are shockingly sinful, how does the LORD respond? He is faithful to his promises, he accomplishes his purposes and he sometimes even uses our faithlessness to achieve his own goals. What a good God!

Genesis 19 - The Lord Is Able To Rescue The Godly and Punish The Unrighteous

Genesis 19 - The Lord Is Able To Rescue The Godly and Punish The Unrighteous

The Sodom and Gomorrah story is a sordid affair. What are we to make of it? That though the Lord patiently offers mercy at every opportunity, the day of his catastrophic judgment against the unrighteous is coming.

Genesis 18 - Is Anything Too Wonderful For The Lord

Genesis 18 - Is Anything Too Wonderful For The Lord

The promises of God made Sarah laugh, but it was cynical laughter. What she needed was her own encounter with the LORD. When the LORD comes down to meet us, he turns our cynicism to joy.

Genesis 16 - The Lord Who Sees Me

Genesis 16 - The Lord Who Sees Me

Sarai and Abram doubted the Lord. They were worried that if they didn't see to their own needs and desires, they would never receive their blessing. But by grasping after their own reward, they ended up blowing up their own lives and the lives of the people around them. Hagar trusted the Lord who saw her. For when the Lord sees, he cares.

Genesis 15 - The Covenantal God

Genesis 15 - The Covenantal God

God is committed to blessing his people. He graciously offers us the reassurance of a covenant, and enters into a binding relationship with us. Here's the deal - He will keep the covenant, or he will bear the penalty; We will keep the covenant, or he will bear the penalty.

Genesis 13-14 - Living By Faith Or By Sight?

Genesis 13-14 - Living By Faith Or By Sight?

Where are we looking for paradise? Lot, who lived by sight, sought paradise in his surroundings. Abram, who lived by faith in the call of God, sought paradise in the gracious promises of Lord.

Genesis 11:27-12:20 - Faith In The Promises of God

Genesis 11:27-12:20 - Faith In The Promises of God

Why do over half the people on the planet look back to Abraham as their father in faith? What is it about him and his story that is so appealing? It isn't so much Abraham that is appealing, but the God of Abraham. Just when the radical intervention of God was desperately needed in the world, he called Abraham personally to a relationship of total dependence with missional purpose. Abraham believed God's gracious promises, and it was credited to him as righteousness.

Mark 16:1-8 - Resurrection Disorientation

Mark 16:1-8 - Resurrection Disorientation

The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead disrupts the world as we know it. Those who have faith in the risen Lord inhabit a different universe from those who don't. Which world are you living in? Which world do you want to live in?

Romans 10:9-17 - Messengers Sent On A Mission

Romans 10:9-17 - Messengers Sent On A Mission

Religious people can sometimes make salvation more complicated than it needs to be. But salvation is by grace through faith. And that faith has content - it is in the person and work of Jesus Christ. So how do people come to faith? They must hear the gospel message. Every Christian has been sent to proclaim it. How will you share it?

2 Timothy 3:10-17 - Equipped For Every Good Work

2 Timothy 3:10-17 - Equipped For Every Good Work

Ephesians 2:11-22 - The Adopted Family Of God

Ephesians 2:11-22 - The Adopted Family Of God

We are the church. We are a people saved by grace through faith in Jesus, and thereby adopted into the family of God. We are a family made up of all different kinds of people. How then should we relate to our Brothers and Sisters?

Matthew 21:23-32 - The Authority Of The King

Matthew 21:23-32 - The Authority Of The King

With all of the evidence pointing to the authority of Jesus as Lord, why do some remain in agnostic unbelief? Some people see the fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies by Jesus, they hear his authoritative teaching and read eyewitness testimony about his miraculous deeds - yet they never move beyond "I don't know." Why?

Matthew 21:12-22 - The Anger Of The King

Matthew 21:12-22 - The Anger Of The King

Many people carry a sentimental, one-dimensional picture of Jesus in their minds; they think of him as a cardigan-wearing, soft-spoken, broad-smiling man who left everyone with a warm fuzzy feeling. But Jesus' first act of business after announcing himself as king was radically confrontational. What makes Jesus angry? Unfruitful religion. Why is that good news? Because the true religion he came to establish is beautiful.

Matthew 21:1-11 - The Arrival Of The King

Matthew 21:1-11 - The Arrival Of The King

The way that Jesus entered into Jerusalem was intentionally designed as a public announcement - Jesus is the Messiah. The crowds got the message and celebrated. The triumphal entry shows us that Jesus is the humble and victorious saviour, but that is also unsettling.
