Rynoryder’s Podcast

By Ryan McCoy

This is a place where I talk about the REAL struggles of being an independent filmmaker living in Los Angeles. I talk about Hollywood and the Studio system, and where I see the future of filmmaking going. I hope to inspire the next generation of filmmakers so they don’t fall into the same traps that I did.

Table Reading of the screenplay, "Butterflies", read by the Cast of the upcoming Independent Feature Film!!

Table Reading of the screenplay, "Butterflies", read by the Cast of the upcoming Independent Feature Film!!

Before we enter production tomorrow, December 11th, 2020, the cast assembled together for the second time, via Zoom, to do a table reading of the screenplay, "Butterflies", written by Ryan McCoy, directed by Kevin Van Stevenson, and adapted from the 2010 YA novel, "Party", written by Tom Leveen!

"Butterflies" takes us inside the head of Becket Montgomery, a high school kid with a decision to make...should she follow in the steps of her deceased mother? Or, does she tune out the voices in her head, and choose LIFE instead?

"FULL Script Analysis & Breakdown!!" - BUGS Acts 1& 2

Getting a little ansy, as I'm sure everyone else is feeling as well right now, so I decided to start something new! I'm going to be doing a FULL analysis and breakdown of some of my scripts. I've realized that the videos I've made where I get into details of my writing, people seem to enjoy, so let's see how these do. I went through acts 1 and 2 of my script "bugs." and there may be some good insight in here for writers looking for someone diving into specifics regarding scene structure and character development.

Thanks for giving it a listen!!

This is the audio from an article I wrote about the Origin Story of how my screenplay, "Apocalypse," went from script to graphic novel and why I decided to do it in the first place. I end the audio with my thoughts about how to and what it means to produce in the film/tv/entertainment industry, in a modern 2019 marketplace. Enjoy!

BONUS CONTENT!! Script Meeting with Brazillian/American director, Kaya Verruno

BONUS CONTENT!! Script Meeting with Brazillian/American director, Kaya Verruno

I recently finished the first draft to send out to Brazillian/American director, Kaya Verruno, of a screenplay based on a pitch idea he had for an adventure story set in the northern jungles of Brazil. This was our first script meeting where he gave me notes on the script to take back and apply to another draft.

The meeting is just under 2 hours, and while not knowing the entire story, I still think you'll be able to pick up on a lot of stuff. If you listen to the way I talk about story, it's very binary. I think if you are an aspiring writer, pay attention. There's definitely some stuff in here that will bring you some value.

Aside from that, Kaya shares several true stories of things he's witnessed and experienced for himself in Brazil. It sounds like quite an amazing place. Enjoy!!

"Self-Publishing Your Own Book" - An excerpt from my book, BLACK ANGEL: I'M BIPOLAR TOO. THIS IS MY STORY

Today marks the two-year anniversary of my mental breakdown that altered the course of my life forever. I wanted to do something special for my podcast listeners, so along with introducing my book and why I decided to write it and the significance of it coming out today, I also picked an excerpt from the end of the first chapter to read.

I want to push open the door for the conversations that need to be had regarding mental health, suicide, addiction and depression. I believe they are all very much entangled together. I wrote this book in the hopes that it can serve as a shield for others to have the courage to speak up about their own mental issues, OR, for those who haven't been affected by it, not to be afraid to speak up openly and honestly about it.

If you like what you hear, please share this with someone you think may benefit from it as well. If you would like to order a copy of my book, please visit this link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1090860080/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

Or, go to amazon.com and search for "Black Angel Bipolar" or "Ryan McCoy Bipolar".

I thank you all for your support.

"Story vs. Spectacle" - Audio Commentary - Short Film, Apocalypse: The Student

"Story vs. Spectacle" - Audio Commentary - Short Film, Apocalypse: The Student

Here's the audio commentary for my third Apocalypse short. As I explain in the video, I drew my inspiration for this one from director, Sam Mendes.

I breakdown how quickly I work on the fly when I see what I want, only doing 1-2 takes for a shot. I compliment the very talented, Micah Parker on his additions to the character and to the scenes. And, I forget the young acctresses name. :) Sorry, Savannah!

The second part of the video I go on a rant talking about Story vs. Spectacle and show an example of one piece of work I believe helps explain the difference.

I'm really trying to figure out how to portray what I mean when I tell people of a movie or a screenplay, "There is no story." In my head, it makes perfect sense, but I'm realizing how untangible the word "story" is, so I want to try and explain it better to the audience when I talk about it. Please enjoy!

"Trying to tell a story without a script." AUDIO COMMENTARY - Short Film, "The Drunk"

"Trying to tell a story without a script." AUDIO COMMENTARY - Short Film, "The Drunk"

Here's another commentary for my short film, "Apocalypse: The Drunk."

My purpose behind putting these pieces of content out is to give any insight and perspective to ANY aspiring filmmaker, artist, creative, just to let you know a bit about what goes through my head and the reasons behind the choices I make, artisticly. Even if sometimes those choices don't neccessarily work out in the end.

The important thing, is to not judge or blame yourself from them, but to learn and move onto the next. To quote a menotr of mine, "You're only as good as your last at bat." :)

Please enjoy!

"What it takes to be a writer in Hollywood" - RynoRyder's Podcast - Show 13.2

As you'll hear during the intro, I was going back through some of my old videos and realized that a podcast with my friend Jon Veles, something fucked up and it only posted about the first 25-ish seconds of the interview.

SO, I found the raw video and audio and decided to re-post it for you all.

Jon is a working writer, currently on TV for ABC's "Fresh Off the Boat." I think there's some really valuable stuff in this interview because Jon and I talk about the differences between writing for film vs. TV, and also dive into our processes as writer's and how we come about making a story.

"How to Make a Short Film w/ Zero Budget" - AUDIO COMMENTARY by Writer/Director Ryan McCoy

"How to Make a Short Film w/ Zero Budget" - AUDIO COMMENTARY by Writer/Director Ryan McCoy

Been talking about doing these for a while now and finally decided to make one. Because I got such a good feedback about me posting the different audio commentaries for my feature film, EVIDENCE, I thought people could gain some value by me doing an audio/video commentary for each of my short films I have on my channel.

You can't get more guerrilla than this one. We shot during "magic hour" and only had about 20-25 minutes to film everything to keep the look we were going for. There were literally 4-5 people, cast included, on set that day. We rehearsed and rehearsed and then when the time was right, we got the shots.

This is probably my favorite of the three shorts, although technically not the best. But, I love the grittiness and dirt of not just this story, but the character herself.

Look forward to more of these commentaries soon. Thank you for watching, and please comment your thoughts below and share this video with friends. Thanks!

BONUS CONTENT!! Life Lessons for the Younger Generation - RynoRyder's Podcast RECAP

What you'll hear first is (after my sexy, raspy, stuffed up intro) is some audio ripped from one of my videos where an intern I had working for me last summer, Kai, wanted to ask me some questions about the industry and how I produced my first feature film. I think the questions are great and I think there's definitely some "jewels" of wisdom in there.

After that, you'll hear a complilation of audio from some of my podcasts I did last year.

I hope you all enjoy, and I hope to continue to bring you value and keep producing MORE CONTENT! :) I love you all.

What's it like being on a Disney show? - RynoRyder's Podcast Show #18 w/ guest John Paul Green

I fucked up on the audio and a second camera for this podcast, but I HIGHLY recommend you all check this one out, featuring actor John Paul Green. JP (as he goes by) is most widely known for his role as Chuck McCoy in the acclaimed Disney Television show, "Austin & Ally". In this podcast, we dive into how he made the move from Houston to Los Angeles, navigating his way through Hollywood, and what it was like working under the Disney banner. JP is a very intelligent, well-thought out person who I believe added some REAL VALUE to any of those aspiring for a career in the entertainment world. I apologize again for the lack of a second camera and bad audio, but I hope you all Enjoy! Ryan McCoy is a writer first, filmmaker second, entrepreneur third. This audio is from my first ever talk that I gave at the beginning of this year. I've become MUCH more comfortable talking and telling my story and talking with passion, but I was nervous as FUCK to give this talk. BUT, I swallowed any judgement and got up and did it. I definitely scared the living shit out of these kids, but at least I did it and I hope to do many, many more throughout my life. I believe I have a natural ability and gift to lead others and help encourage them to at least think bigger. Whether or not they take any action on it is up to them. Enjoy!

BONUS CONTENT!!! Audio Commentary by the stars of "Evidence," Abi and Ashley

About a week ago I posted the audio commentary I did for the feature film, "Evidence." People seemed to really enjoy it so I thought I would post the other commentary from the DVD extras that was done by the two stars of the film, Abigail Richie and Ashley Bracken!

Theirs is definitely lighter in tone than mine, and they both give a ton of insight into what it was like being in the film. If you've seen it, you'll know these two girls were put through the fucking WRINGER on this movie. They never once complained and always gave it 100% effort and determination. I'm very proud of both of their performances and I encourage any aspiring OR established actors give this a listen. There are definitely some jewels of knowledge that any actor can learn from. BONUS CONTENT!! Audio Commentary by Ryan McCoy from the Horror film, "Evidence"!

This is the audio ripped from the DVD extras of the audio commentary I did for the film's domestic release a few years back. I thought I'd post the audio on here for those of you who have seen the movie, will be able to follow along with the commentary. I made "Evidence" on a VERY shoe-string/no-string budget. So, for any aspiring filmmakers out there, young and old, there are some great tidbits, tips and tricks in here that I think are able to provude a ton of value. Because I didn't have any money (I paid for the whole thing out-of-pocket and we got the entire film in the can for just under $12,000), we relied heavily on creativitey and ingenuity in order to bring the best possible scares and suspense we could. SCREENWRITING, PHIL EISNER "Event Horizon," FILM - RynoRyder's Podcast - The Word - Show #10

WOW...! Did Phil Eisner and I bring FIRE on this one!!

I knew this would be a good show because the topic was "Writing," and if you look at any of my bios, it says "Writer first..." Writing is the single-most thing I enjoy to do in life, and boy, did we talk deep about it.

Phil Eisner is a screenwriter who penned the film most noticably known, EVENT HORIZON. I met him as an instructor at UCLA and we really just clicked. I could sit and talk with him for HOURS, not only just about movies and writing, but about LIFE, and how it's reflected in movies.

Just an all around amazing person and we had a blast talking. There's a reason we went 20-something minutes past the hour mark. It's that good.

In this episode, I'm joined again with Josh Boyer and also Toronto-based producer, Gordon Weiske. I apologize for the crummy audio in the beginning!

We talk about the lack of great story-telling in the Hollywood studio system today compared to movies that were made only decades ago. I talk about character over characteristics and that I believe it's not the writer's fault, the studio system is imploding.

HOLLYWOOD CURTAIN, INSPIRE FILMMAKERS, DESTROY HOLLYWOOD - RynoRyder's Podcast - Show #2

HOLLYWOOD CURTAIN, INSPIRE FILMMAKERS, DESTROY HOLLYWOOD - RynoRyder's Podcast - Show #2

This episode I describe the term I use, "The Hollywood Curtain" and I talk about what I mean when I say I want to "destroy Hollywood." I believe Hollywood is no longer innovating and is in desperate need of it.

I talk about pulling back that curtain to reveal Hollywood for what it is, a business and a machine. I think we have strayed too far from the artistic part of it, and lost the art of great story-telling through a visual medium.

I talk about how I want to eliminate the need for the term "celebrity" and give examples of how my viewpoint has changed over the years.

Finally, I talk about wanting to inspire the next generation of filmmakers and reach my hand out to them and lend them my experience and knowledge of the industry.

I am joined on this show with my friend and business partner, Josh Boyer.

BIPOLAR, MENTAL HEALTH, MENTAL BREAKDOWN - RynoRyder's Podcast - Show #1

BIPOLAR, MENTAL HEALTH, MENTAL BREAKDOWN - RynoRyder's Podcast - Show #1

I suffered a massive mental breakdown and put the lives of my family in danger. I was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder and really hit the RESET button about knowing who I was for the last 36 years of my life.

When I decided to start putting my message out to the world about what I experienced and how I've rebuilt myself up, I made the decision to launch a Podcast and Internet show, and release it on the anniversary of that night that changed my life forever.

Through a BUTT-LOAD of hard work and support, I achieved that dream and executed on my vision. I'm very proud of what I have accomplished and will continue to spread my message and share my life as a filmmaker living in Los Angeles.

I hope this show can serve as an inspiration to others, that no matter what the obstacles are in your life that may stand in your way, whether they be physical, or mental, that if you work every day on it and you work hard, you can achieve anything you want.

Rynoryder’s Podcast - Ep. 41

Rynoryder’s Podcast - Ep. 41

Definitely my worst Anchor Podcast yet. I tried to force an episode today about “rain in cinema” of all things because I couldn’t think of any other topic and I give up halfway through it and admit it’s a bullshit piece of content. However, I still decided to publish it to let everyone know that sometimes it’s good to learn from your misses, and perhaps you can learn some insight from not only going through the experience, but also in the feedback from others. I encourage everyone who listens to this episode to leave a comment and tell me your thoughts on about my fuck yo and what I can do to improve it. Happy Saturday, you all!!

Rynoryder’s Podcast - Ep. 40

Made it to my forties!! In this episode, I talk about what to do if you are an independent producer, looking to finance a movie. How if you have connections to investors, you need to have your shit dialed in. Or, if you are self-financing, you have to work your fucking face off if you want it to happen. Nothing comes easy, in life, and especially in the entertainment industry.

In this episode I talk about if you’re having difficulty coming up with a story, try putting restrictions on yourself like limiting the number of characters, or having the entire story take place in only one location, things like that. Rynoryder’s Podcast - Ep. 32

I stay specific with this episode and talk about the climax and final scene in the movie “The Last of the Mohicans.” I discuss how Michael Mann was able to build the story to have the A, B and C stories all climax not only at the same time, but the same event and space. It’s pretty remarkable to pull that off. Also, the incredible score by Randy Edelman and Trevor Jones allows for this type of scene to play out using only minimal to no dialogue. What are some of your favorite scenes out there and why?

Rynoryder’s Podcast - Ep. 31

I feel like I’ve been going macro with my topics lately and wanted to talk about specific movies or scenes in movies that I find to be incredible. After all, this is a podcast about making movies, right?? In this episode, I talk about the movie, “The Mist.” Specifically the ending. If you have not seen the movie, DO NOT listen to this episode. If you have, I give a quick recap of what I think about the ending and the movie as a whole, and also discuss the importance of an opening to a script, versus the ending of a film. Give it a listen!

Rynoryder’s Podcast - Ep. 30

I’m pretty sure I cut myself off at the end of this one. BUT, in this episode, I discuss the “auteur theory”. I site some examples of American Directors and how they might be deemed to be in this category, and then I completely debunk the theory, based on the many departments that are responsible for making a film, and how it’s impossible for a single director to have that much “authoritative” control over a picture. Listen and enjoy!!
