Episode 15: Learn to trust yourself, your intuition and your instincts

How do you know when to go on or when to go back? How do you distinguish between a bit of nerves because you're trying something new or real fear warning you you'd better make a different decision? By learning to trust yourself, your intuition and your instincts.

When it comes to walking alone in Nature the questions I get asked most, especially by women, is: “Isn't it dangerous to go hiking by yourself? Aren't you scared to be out there alone?”

To be fair, plenty of men have asked the same questions, but more women than men seem to be afraid to go out into Nature on their own.

I see it reflected in the coaching I do as well. On average women seem to be more hesitant to trust in themselves than a lot of men.

Over the years my confidence has grown tremendously through hiking, both with others and solo.

This is why there now is a podcast about how to safely hike mountains. Because you can use what you take away from it anywhere, whether on a walk or in life.

Episode 14: Don't be afraid of other hikers. Most of them are really nice

Hiking by yourself in unfamiliar surroundings can make you nervous. Running into other people on the trail can make you even more so. However, in most cases, the people you meet are there for the same reason you are: to enjoy the quiet beauty and solitude of the mountains.

Episode 11: Why drinking enough water on your hike is so important

Not bringing enough water along can be more dangerous, IS more dangerous than bringing too little food with you. Find out what happens when you don't drink enough as I share with you a story of an almost disastrous hike I went on.

Google is a great help when you're preparing for your hike and want to find out how to best make sure the water you find on your hike is drinkable. Simply google something like 'How to purify water in the wild'. Do this well before the start of your hike to give yourself time to buy or order whatever purifying system you want to use AND have time to practice it.

Episode 07: In case of emergency

Episode 07: In case of emergency

Mountain hiking is not as dangerous as many people seem to think.  In all my years of hiking I've never even had a sprained ankle. Nor has a guest or client ever suffered an injury or accident while in the mountains with me.

That doesn't mean accidents don't happen; they do.

When an accident goes beyond your first aid capabilities, it's important you know what to do and how to do it.

Episode 05: Your Gear

Not everyone does this before they set out and sometimes that means you end up hiking in your socks. Or you might find yourself freezing your butt off because you didn't bring a hat and mittens. And then there's that one item of gear you'll hopefully never need to use, but will be very glad to have in your pack when you do!

Episode 03: Backups and weather checks

Episode 03: Backups and weather checks

On this episode: two easy to forget things. The first one because it's something we don't think to do when we normally leave the house. the second one because this should be such common sense that I nearly forgot to include it in these tips to safely hike mountains.  I'm talking about having a backup plan and checking the weather.

BACKUPS:

Have you told anyone where you will be? Who will send Search & Rescue after you when you're late in coming back from your hike? It seems such a silly thing to think about. After all, what could possibly happen to you when you're so well prepared? Probably nothing. But that one time that something does happen, you'll thank your lucky stars at least one person knows where you are and what to do when you don't show up when they expect you to.

WEATHER CHECK:

This is such an obvious one that I almost left it out, but I run into too many people who are not prepared or even worse are unaware of the weather they'll be running into on their hike.

A lot of people these days use an app on their phone or a GPS when they want to know where they are or in which direction they need to go while on the trail. But what do you do when you have no satellite connection or worse .... When the battery of your phone or GPS runs out?

I recorded these tips using video and in this episode especially I included visuals of maps to explain how to use them. So be sure to check out the tip #3 video here: https://daregreatlycoaching.com/howtohikemountainssafely/
