Episode 75: SOS Send Wives

Episode 75: SOS Send Wives

In Episode 75 (!), we finally discuss the folklore of the city of New Orleans. We explore the legend of the Casket Girls and the Old Ursuline Convent (were they vampires / were they vampire smugglers / would you rather fight one normal-sized vampire or 500 mini vampires). Then, we discuss the origins and practices of Voodoo and, of course, Marie Laveau.

As we mention in the intro, Saints & Witches is taking some time off! We’ve loved making these past 75 episodes, but we need a break (just thinking about the idea of 75 episodes is making us tired). We’ll post a listening guide here soon for those new to the podcast who don’t know where to start, or for those who haven’t listened to the earlier episodes since they came out.

To all our listeners, especially those who have been here from the very beginning, when we were just two pre-pandemic grad students eating too much Mexican food in a studio apartment, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Episode 69: Thoughts and Prayers for Her Vagina

Episode 69 calls for a good time, so we decided to explore two chapters of the epic Medici saga. First, we follow Giovanni and Giulio de’ Medici as they infiltrate the church to eventually become Pope Leo X and Pope Clement VII (just two guys swingin' their dicks around!). Then, we explore the insane life and controversy of their descendant, the “Black Queen” Catherine de’ Medici. From the Renaissance to the Reformation to the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, it's clear that God rewards the schemer.

Episode 36: John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt (His Name Is My Name, Too!)

Calling all fairytale sluts! (Philosopher sluts and historical accuracy sluts, maybe not so much.) This week we finally visit Switzerland, where we discuss the life and trial of 18th-century Anna Göldi, sometimes referred to as the "last witch" in Europe. Then, we hop back to the 12th century and examine the multiple legends surrounding the local saint Ida of Toggenburg.

Episode 35: Get Some Stanke On It

Welcome back to another episode where we air out all of England's ye olde dirty laundry, from political rivalries to occultist rituals to brutal executions. We discuss one of England's most famous and influential saints, 12th century martyr Thomas Becket, then explore the trials of Eleanor Cobham and Margery Jourdemayne, two of the earliest witch trials in England.

Episode 34: If I'm Not Miserable, I Must Be Sinning, Featuring Special Guest Hannah Bute Howe

We welcome another special guest this week, Hellenistic pagan witch Hannah Bute Howe, who gives us a much-needed overview of Greek magical beliefs and practices before we discuss Theoris of Lemnos, a fourth-century BC witch whose trial constitutes the most detailed account of a witch trial to survive from Classical Greece. Then, we discuss the controversial and mysterious story of Greek virgin martyr St. Philomena. Once again, there's somehow too much urine.

Episode 33: Ye Olde Play-Doh Leg

In today's episode, we focus on two soldiers who couldn't be more different: 16th-century Spanish mystic and founder of the Jesuit Order St. Ignatius of Loyola, and first-century Celtic warrior queen Boudica. Episode 32: A Hag-by-Hag Basis

Another listener request! And it MUST be examined on a hag-by-hag basis. Today we discuss the legendary Slavic folklore figure, Baba Yaga. And we have one question for Eastern Europe: what's up with all the conflagration?!

Episode 31: A Healthy Gaggle of Nuns, Featuring Special Guest Madeline McDougall

Episode 31: A Healthy Gaggle of Nuns, Featuring Special Guest Madeline McDougall

We always say that there's nothing like a good, healthy gaggle of nuns. Nuns feature prominently in both of our stories today: first, we welcome our VERY FIRST guest storyteller, former Catholic missionary Madeline McDougall, as she tells the story of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, also known as the Little Flower. Then, we discuss the crazy AF Louviers Possessions of 1652. You'll hear about naked priests, bones yeeted (yote?) into space, and so much more.
