Salty Journals Podcast Featuring Last Stop To Nowhere Podcast Wreck of the Batavia Part 1

In the mid-17th century, when an unmapped Australia was still only known as Terra Australis Incognita, a Dutch East India Company vessel wrecked off the West coast, only days before mutineers could seize the ship in a bloody uprising.

Interview with Sailing Totem Behan and Jamie Gifford on their sailing experience, raising children on a the high seas and conservation

Behan and Jamie Gifford set off from Seattle, Washington aboard Totem, their Stevens 47 sloop, in 2008. Since then they have been sailing the world, documenting their travels on their blog, Sailing Totem, and raising their three children, Niall, Mairen and Siobhan, all while crossing oceans, exploring landfalls, providing coaching, homeschooling and meeting people along the way.

In this episode we spoke about their lifestyle coaching which offers the full experience to get you onto the water. Their coaching program takes you through the full process from early planning for a trip, countdown to the departure, and post departure. We also touched on their tips and knowledge around home schooling.

We started the show by asking where they are calling into the recording from.

I'm excited to be able to share with you the latest episode of the Salty Journals Podcast where I chat to Mr CJ Hobgood. CJ is an absolute waterman, a dedicated father and husband and someone who is driven to succeed in what he does. Most people automatically identify CJ with an amazing professional surfing career where he was ASP rookie of the year and former world champion but what I really enjoyed was learning about what makes CJ tick. So a big thanks to CJ for his time and energy sharing on the show today.

Interview with Dean Cropp the Barefoot Captain "Escape into isolation" Season 1 Episode 11

Interview with Dean Cropp the Barefoot Captain "Escape into isolation" Season 1 Episode 11

Underwater filmmaker, diver and self-proclaimed pirate Dean Cropp. Inspired by his father, documentary maker and conservationist Ben Cropp, Dean sold his house and now lives on a sailing boat that he travels the world in creating a web series called Barefoot Captain’s Log. On this episode we chat with Dean about life on the boat, how the days on the water are spent and the challenges that come with no fixed address. We also cover off a recent shark attack incident which injured one of his crew members (Anika Craney) recently. Safe to say it has been a tough year for Anika. She lost her home during the summer bushfires. "She seemed to be more worried about missing out on the adventure then the injuries," Mr Cropp said. "While you hope it doesn't happen to you, you know it's part of the risk."

Bill Tai talks with SJP on Kitesurfing, Conservation, and Bringing it all Together With Business. Season 1 Episode 3

Bill Tai talks with SJP on Kitesurfing, Conservation, and Bringing it all Together With Business. Season 1 Episode 3

For Episode 3 of the podcast we got the absolute honour to sit down with Dr Bill Tai. If you don't know Bill but you have been using Zoom Video Conferencing during isolation in these past COVID-19 impacted months then you should. Bill was one of the initial investors in Zoom. So in short Bill basically made this podcast happen. We had planned to record all the episodes in person but instead when the boarders were locked down and travel was restricted we went to Zoom.

Many know him as a close friend of Richard Branson, a charitable man, an expert in blockchain, but beyond that Bill is one of the keenest Kite surfers I have had the pleasure to meet.

What I admire about Bill is that he coordinates his entire life around what he loves (kitesurfing and ocean sports). Every overseas trip he does, every event he runs, any potential investing opportunities, are all brought together by his many adventurous kitesurfing trips. What Bill has done is shown how our culture has risen up and moved beyond having work and play be two separate things. In the old days, we used to hide our play. Now, we can bring our work and play together to live a life more fulfilled.

Valentine Thomas: Spearfishing, Sustainable Eating, & Sharks Season 1 Episode 2 Salty Journals Podcast

Join us on Episode 2 of the Salty Journals podcast where we chat with Valentine Thomas. Valentine Thomas traded in her business suit for a wet suit. As a former finance lawyer in London, she felt constricted. Through luck or chance she ended up on a diving adventure in Egypt changed her life. By 2010, she was hooked, diving down the South Atlantic with whale sharks, lobsters, and African pompanos. Today she is a well-known spearfisher and an Instagram star with over 200,000 followers. She’s given several TED talks and has been featured in Forbes. She has also of course been interviewed on the Joe Rogan Podcast.
If you find her on Instagram, and you’ll usually see her posing with the catch of the day. “I eat everything I catch,” she says. Aside from that, Thomas pushes a message of conservation and what goes into putting food on the table. “Spearfishing allows me to feel one with nature. It shows me how to respect nature,” and adds, “When you are in the ocean with sharks, and you can easily be a part of their food chain, it makes you respect the hunt.”
In 2013, Thomas received recognition for breaking the world record after catching an enormous Atlantic Horse-eye Jack while diving off Ascension Islands. Join us on the show to get an introduction to Valentine and learn a little more about here experience, interacting with sharks, and her current projects.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston: Solo Sailing, Isolation, and staying productive. Season 1 Episode 1 Salty Journals Podcast

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston: Solo Sailing, Isolation, and staying productive. Season 1 Episode 1 Salty Journals Podcast

The year 1968 remains one of the most tumultuous single years in history, marked by historic achievements, shocking assassinations, a much debated war and a strong spirit of rebellion in the air that swept through countries all over the world. Occurring at the dawn of the television age, the historic events of 1968 also played out on TV screens across the world, bringing them home in a way that had never been possible before.

Things didn't calm down much in 1969. The major News Stories of the year include The Beatles' last public performance, on the roof of Apple Records, First Concorde test flight. Woodstock. As well as the first man to The first man to land on the moon. That was the  Apollo 11 mission with Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin.

It was against this backdrop in history that he Sunday Times Golden Globe race finished. That was audio you heard just before.

9 men started that race and only one finished.

That man was Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. Sire Robin and his 9.75m traditional ketich rigged double ended yacht Suhaili who at the start, was considered the most unlikely boat and given no chance.

It was a funny sort of race, with no real rules, no official start line and you could set off when you were ready. But the prize was worth having — £5000 — which would be worth a lot more today!  And of course the achievement beyond price: the objective was to be the first to sail single-handed non-stop round the world.

You can learn more about Sir Robin Knox-Johston here:
