Bit Depth
By Santiago Ramones
Santiago Ramones gets to know people on a deeper level: Why they do what they do and why they believe what they believe. Bit Depth lies at the intersection of creativity and philosophy, striving to establish a culture of nuance, empathy, and growth. A musician himself, he speaks with other musicians, creatives, outliers, and any sort of interesting person interested in deep conversation.
Still going strong after seven years and hundreds of episodes, Bit Depth features some of Oklahoma City's most fascinating minds and influential artists.

338 - Compost Adjacent (Folksy duo of Ryan Smith and Nicholas Allen)
Ryan Smith and Nich Allen met doing compost-adjacent things. When Nich heard Ryan play his music, he knew he wanted to play music with him, somehow. They’ve been playing together for some time. They both frequent the Red Dirt Poetry Open Mic, at which I was playing, too. I actually know Ryan through mutual friends, and I went to the same high school as Nich. So we got to reconnect through the open mic and I asked them to be on my podcast, that night. They agreed to my chaotic request and here they are, giving them the push they needed to decide on a band name. We talked about music, how they got together making music, academic musical knowledge and how much it isn’t needed, emotional communication, and how we grow through the music we make. We talked about what she’s done since the last time she was on, like working at Castle Row, managing artists, going to law school, and more. There’s some great music business wisdom that Stefani shares on here, so any musically inclined person might benefit from giving this one a listen.
She’s not here for no reason, though. She has a charity show coming up on March 11th at 7pm and here’s the text she has for the event:
”Art Fusion is an event where local music and visual art collide. Some of OKC’s most talented bands and artists will be presenting their art at one of the city’s most prominent event centers, The Yale Theater in OKC. While our guests enjoy music from multiple genres including Singer/Songwriter with a taste of Rock, Neo Soul, Hip/Hop mixed with poetry, and Alternative Rock and Hip/Hop crossover, you can browse the walls with canvas’s created by four our most talented local painters. If that isn’t enough, two live paintings will take place throughout the evening and raffled off to benefit the Girls Rock Camp in OKC. There is so much to experience and enjoy, we hope you fall in love with the journey this night will take you on. Grab a drink with us and live local. GA and VIP options are both available.”

Chase Hampton, also known by his artist name, Generation Lossless, is a composer, producer, and musician from Enid, Oklahoma. He has been on the podcast before, a long time ago, but a seemingly common theme in this podcast is “getting people on the podcast that have not yet emerged from the Chrysalis.” With his second album, Advertising Films, Chase, and therefore, Generation Lossless, has more fully come into himself as an artist. This was recorded before the release of Advertising Films, and so many of the pressures and anxieties that come with nearing the release of an album are present in this recording. 316 - Miscellaneous Writings (Sample Rate 12)
I’ll be honest - I haven’t been prioritizing Bit Depth in the way that I’d like. There wasn’t an episode last week. Sometimes scheduling issues happen. Sometimes I’m being lazy. By putting this out into the ether, I’m holding myself accountable to prioritize this thing. This is my fault, and I’m holding myself to it. So, while I schedule people to get on the podcast (and ask you to send people my way), I figured I’d give you something in the meantime.

303 - Creativity and Technicality at Cardinal Song with Aaron Newberry and Michael Trepagnier
In this rather unique episode, I got to sit down with Aaron Newberry and Michael Trepagnier at Cardinal Song - Michael’s amazing studio in OKC’s backyard. We recorded this just after recording an episode of their podcast, 15 Minutes Of…, where we discussed a topic for… fifteen minutes. That’s their podcast and it’s great and you should listen to it. For Bit Depth, however, we discussed the spectrum of creativity and technicality: instances where one or the other would help, or not, how to combine them, and exist within both at all times, along with some other topics sprinkled in throughout. Before you get too far in to the podcast, though, go check out their stuff:

300 - Santiago Ramones and Evan Jarvicks, LIVE!
300 is an arbitrary milestone, but it is a milestone that is valued nonetheless. This episode is unlike any other - I am interviewed by Evan Jarvicks, Chief Executive Weirdo of makeoklahomaweirder.com and he asks his own questions, separate from the usual deep questions on Bit Depth. Once Evan was out of questions, I opened the floor to questions from the audience. We talked about the music industry, morality, free will, forgiveness, and more! It was held live at The Sanctuary, a new venue in Oklahoma City. I’m very grateful for everyone that came out to it. Since this was a live event, I had to do a lot of sound adjustments, so the quality is a little different than normal.
Special thanks to Sable Ramones, my lovely spouse, for doing the poster/flyer, to Mekala Littleton for being so welcoming with her space, Evan Jarvicks for hosting, and to the Bit Depth Discord for being an awesome community!

According to him, “Jon McMillan is a United States Congressman who does not accept letters. He often launders drug money through the entertainment industry with endeavors such as stand up comedy, record producing and onlyfans. A huge fan of Star Trek mcmillan plans to move to outer space with the rest of the worlds billionaires, leaving lower income families to fight the impending race war.”
I can vouch for a lot of that except for the typos and absence of an Oxford comma, but that’s on him. Jon McMillan, also known as Teflo $, is a comedian and musician, and we talked about… comedy and music! We also talked about religion, morality, racism, and heroin. Get to know Jon!
