Vanessa Brizuela is a technical officer in the Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research at WHO. She and her team are leading efforts on research capacity strengthening in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Vanessa started her career in Argentina as a licensed psychologist; however she has always had a passion for global maternal and newborn health. She has coordinated a host of sexual and reproductive education programmes in New York, the Caribbean and Buenos Aires. She holds a Doctorate in Public Health with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Join the Sanyu Sisters as they chat with Dame Professor Tina Lavender. Tina is Professor of Maternal and Newborn health and director of a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre. Tina's career has focused on building the research capacity of midwives and developing the Lugina Africa Midwives Research Network(LAMRN) to improve evidence-based practices, with a focus on still birth and respectful care.
Some of her other accolades include Visiting Professor at the University of Nairobi, Director of the NIHR Global Health Research Group on the Prevention and Management of Stillbirth, working in Sub-Saharan Africa. She is also the Associate Editor of the African Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health.

From business management to project coordination for Médecins Sans Frontières in Nigeria, Palestine and South Sudan, Lenka saw first hand the impact that socioeconomic inequity has on health. Motivated to learn more, she holds 2 Masters degrees in Middle East Studies and Demography as well as a PhD in Population Studies from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical medicine. She is passionate about maternal and newborn care and in particular understanding postnatal care provision in health facilities.

A consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Benjamin holds a specific interest in how to respond to the sexual and reproductive health needs of populations living in remote, resource-poor and humanitarian-emergency settings. His passion to understand more about the world we live in has led him to travel widely across Asia and Africa. He has worked with academic, international and local organisations in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

He has provided assistance on the Thai-Burmese Border, East Timor, Uganda, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Central African Republic and South Sudan and he also worked in the response to the West African Ebola epidemic.

Join us as we discuss how we can safeguard sexual and reproductive health amidst a pandemic.

Episode 6 - Sharing Knowledge

Join the SanyuSisters as we chat to Ashish K.C all about how he has side-stepped COVID to keep his research on track and share knowledge during a global pandemic.

Ashish is a perinatal epidemiologist and went on to complete a doctoral degree in neonatology. He has a wide range of experience and has previously been technical advisor to Save the Children and UNICEF over the last 15 years. He is currently based in Uppsala University, Sweden and has worked within the research field for many years both leading and supporting several large trials based in Nepal. 

 Ashish has published in many journals and more recently in Lancet Global Health: KC, A., Gurung, R., Kinney, M., Sunny, A., Moinuddin, M. et al.(2020). Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic response on intrapartum care, stillbirth, and neonatal mortality outcomes in Nepal: a prospective observational study.

We are delighted to be able to chat with Ashish and hear how he has navigated the  sharing of research findings both within the academic community and study participants etc

Join the SanyuSisters as we chat to Alice Beardmore-Gray all about how she has side-stepped COVID to keep her research on track and continue study recruitment during the pandemic

Alice is a fellow Obstetrics trainee and in her third year of her PhD at Kings College London. She is currently based in Zambia as the trial manager of the CRADLE 4 study which is recruiting in India and Zambia and aims to find out when is the best time to deliver women with pre-eclampsia between 34 and 37 weeks of pregnancy. She is passionate about global maternal and newborn health research and has previously worked as an NHS Improving Global Health Fellow in South Africa and a research associate in Rwanda.

Andrew is a Professor of International maternal  health at the University of Liverpool. He is a highly experienced clinical trialist and the director of both the Sanyu Research Unit and the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Research Synthesis. He is currently working on over £10million worth of innovative CTIMP and non-CTIMP projects committed to improving pregnancy outcomes and clinical care worldwide, particularly in poorer settings. And if that wasn’t enough accolades, he is also our academic supervisor!
