How to help when your child struggles with behaviors

How to help when your child struggles with behaviors

I am absolutely thrilled to be back to weekly podcasting, and I have episodes lined up that have the power to change your life as a parent to a child with needs. Seriously, we’re tackling very important topics that don’t get much air time (even though they should). Subscribe to the show if you haven’t yet, because you won’t want to miss what’s in store. Today’s episode sets the bar high, so buckle up.  What exactly happens when a client signs on to work with me? Today, you get to see for yourself. Daniela, an amazing mom to a nonspeaking son with ASD, reached out for help during a particularly challenging stage of parenting. Worried about his self injurious behavior, she’d forgo the sleep she sorely needed and instead stay awake scrolling the internet for solutions to help him.  No matter what she did, she felt it wasn’t enough.  Bravely and vulnerably, she logged in for our session together.  What you’re about to listen to is a completely unedited recording of what transpired. If she can show up, help herself, and feel lighter and more confident on the other side, so can you. Have a listen, and if you hear yourself in Daniela, dive in for your Road Map Session now and start healing.

Lower Your Body Burden: The Easy Way To Improve Your Family's Health with Michelle Walrath

Lower Your Body Burden: The Easy Way To Improve Your Family's Health with Michelle Walrath

Navigating the world of autism, adhd, and other disabilities is confusing enough. Add in differing opinions on nutrition (gluten free, grain free, dairy free, paleo, keto, etc) and biomedical healing (some people believe in it, others don’t), and it can feel like you’re caught in a whirlpool of overwhelm.

Most people feel so daunted by all the options, they end up staying stuck,so afraid of making the wrong decision, they freeze.

Others take action but because the confusion makes them constantly question themselves, they end up hopping from one modality to the next, unsure if anything is truly helping.

Trust me, I get it.

Enter Michelle Walrath, a trailblazer in the pesticide free, non-GMO restaurant market, who believes that food and health should be joyful experiences. She’s also a mom of four children who’s used to juggling hockey practice, homework, and healthy eating during large family gatherings.

Yes, I said joyful. Take a nice, deep exhale. This doesn’t have to be hard.

If you’re the parent who’s giving your kid fast food multiple times per week, please know this episode is for you in all its encouraging, nonjudgmental beauty.

If your kid already eats their greens, there is so much more here for you to consider.

The legal questions you’ve been too scared to ask, answered! With special education attorney, Susan Deedy

The legal questions you’ve been too scared to ask, answered! With special education attorney, Susan Deedy

It’s the big, scary thing most families avoid like the plague: speaking with a special education attorney to support their child. Too often, people avoid doing this for a host of reasons, such as not wanting to seem “combative,” worrying about the cost (even before they’ve made a phone call or received a quote), and imagining a long, drawn out ordeal. Of course, most parents of children with autism are ALREADY managing so much, the idea of adding another undertaking feels like trying to stuff a ski parka into an already packed suitcase. But what if it doesn’t have to be that way?I’m honored to welcome the highly regarded, New York based special education attorney, Susan Deedy, to the podcast today for a no holds barred interview. As a parent of a nonspeaker (who is finally starting to speak at 13 years old), I don’t hold back in asking all the questions I know you need to be answered, such as:“Should I homeschool instead?”“When is the right time to talk to an attorney?”“What should I look for in a good lawyer?”“Can I actually get my child’s needs met, even if I’m told it can’t be done?”Listen to this episode, save it, take notes, and listen again. You’re not going to want to miss one word. Remember, I’ve always got your back.

How to approach making a difficult decision for your child with autism

How to approach making a difficult decision for your child with autism

Let’s get real. Even when you have a joyful life as a parent to a child with needs, you still face many decisions that parents of neurotypical kids just don’t. Some of these decisions are small, and even though they require your energy, they’re not too taxing.
Others are major. They have the potential to change the trajectory of your child’s entire future. And it’s up to you to make them if your child is unable to advocate for themselves.
It’s intense. It can be scary. And also beautiful.
Joy Bufalini is a mom of three children, one of whom has intense needs. She knows what it’s like to be in survival mode. She knows what it’s like to make major decisions on a daily basis. She’s also committed to thriving as a woman, mother, and entrepreneur.
Our discussion on today’s episode is one of my favorites, ever. It’s honest, emotional, and something ever parent needs to hear, especially if you’re IN IT right now.

Interview with Soma Mukhopadhyay

Interview with Soma Mukhopadhyay

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming one of my favorite guests, Soma Mukhopadhyay, back to the podcast.

Soma is the founder of Rapid Prompt Method, which many people mistakenly think is simply a way of communication for non speaking individuals. In reality, it provides those who’ve been turned away from other learning environments to not only learn and communicate, but also experience a whole, full, existence. “Life beyond the letter board” has taken shape over the past 30 years as Soma taught students who have presented with various types of sensory needs, behaviors, and abilities. She presumed competence with all of them and encouraged them to grow their sensory tolerance, life skills, typing, hobbies and speech. She has also encouraged parents to be more ambitious in what they want for their children and shows them how to achieve it together. Needless to say, she’s my kind of woman and this interview is a powerful one, not to be missed.

Creating milestones with your neurodiverse child

Milestones aren’t just about development and school. What real life milestones are important to you?

Taking your child to a sporting event? He or she having a true friend or even a first date? It doesn’t matter how small it is, even your child filling up their own water glass can be a milestone.

On today's podcast episode we’re diving into the key ingredient that is needed for your neurodiverse child to achieve their milestones, which too often is overlooked by schools and therapists.

Informing yourself means you can be a stronger, more powerful advocate for your child. Don’t miss this powerful episode and start becoming a confident guide for your child 24/7.

What have you been tolerating in your life?

What have you been tolerating in your life?

On today's podcast episode we are taking a deep dive into one of the most toxic patterns that most people deal with while parenting a child with needs, which is the pattern of tolerating things that you know deep down in your gut are not okay for you or your child.

Why is this pattern of settling so very toxic? Why is it a slippery slope that eventually makes it harder to get what you both want and deserve? How can you break up with being a people pleaser once and for all instead of unknowingly sabotaging your parenting journey?

Take a listen and find out more. You won’t regret it.

How can a service dog help someone with autism? Interview with Jeremy Dulebohn

How can a service dog help someone with autism? Interview with Jeremy Dulebohn

I first spoke with Jeremy Dulebohn, a gifted service dog trainer with over 30 years experience, in August of 2020. At the time, I knew nothing about service dogs or how they could help my child with autism. Fast forward to April 2022 when I had the pleasure of spending a week with Jeremy as he delivered Rocco's service dog, Oakley, and put me through dog handler bootcamp, so to speak. I knew immediately the he is a special human who's passionate about using his talents and the gifts of animals to make a difference in the world. It's an honor to have him on the podcast today.

Jeremy has placed over 1300 service dogs (which includes training the families, handlers, and teams who work with the dogs) for people who have all types of needs. When people hear about our Oakley, I am often asked, "how can a dog even help someone with autism, aside from the emotional support aspect?" Jeremy's answers might surprise you, as dogs can help those with ASD in far more ways than you might guess.

Other questions we dive into together in this episode:

-How can a service dog help someone who doesn't have autism but has other needs?

-How long is the wait for a service dog?

-How can families manage the cost of a service dog if finances are a concern?

-Benefits of a service dog that are often overlooked.

-How to know if you're ready for a service dog or if you should wait.

Establishing a peaceful, calm energy in your home influences your child's behavior across all settings.

Establishing a peaceful, calm energy in your home influences your child's behavior across all settings.

Yes, even when they're not at home, this environment will impact how they feel and act. In school, on the playground, in restaurants, etc.

I’m fully aware this might be an inconvenient truth for you. Keep reading.

This is something I'm incredibly passionate about because neurodiverse and disabled children are often more energetically sensitive than their neurotypical peers. They tend to have more social anxiety, feel more nervous about going to new places they're not familiar with, or become more easily overwhelmed when bombarded with stimuli.

Unfortunately, many parents assume their child just can't handle certain people/places/things, even those that are meant to be fun. After all, nobody wants to deal with a meltdown in public.

Here’s the bottom line: success in any setting starts at home and it starts with you. But it doesn’t have to be intimidating.

The question I get asked more than any other

The question I get asked more than any other

In case you didn’t know, there is a documentary film about my family, specifically my son, Rocco, who's now 12, that's hitting film festivals (and winning awards) all around the world.

Today’s podcast episode takes a closer look at the question I am asked the most frequently by journalists around the Rocco Up documentary.

My family is incredibly honored to be a voice for the autism community and advocate for families that haven't been seen or heard as they navigate their journey with autism. As the press interviews have increased, I've set the intention that each one will spread the message of hope and support so that the world as a whole can be more inclusive and encouraging for these families.

Inevitably, every journalist brings up the topic of how “hard” it must be to parent a child who can't fluently talk to me or who experiences the world so differently.

My response might surprise you, and it’s certainly not how I would have responded 10 years ago.

No more messy mornings! Help your child’s time management skills

No more messy mornings! Help your child’s time management skills

On today's podcast episode where we're looking at a topic that should seem easy to fix but often gets ugly: your child’s time management, especially in the morning.

Many neurodiverse children struggle to accomplish simple tasks in a timely fashion (according to you), like get ready for school in the morning, finish their homework, or clean up after dinner.

This is a topic that many parents struggle to solve and then feel bad about it, because in their mind it should be so easy. Their minds loudly yell,

“Shouldn't I know how to do this?”

“Shouldn't I have this figured out?”

“Everyone else seems to fix this easily, so why can't I?”

Yes, you can. But you need a solid strategy.

What to do if your child is being bullied by a teacher

What to do if your child is being bullied by a teacher

On today's podcast episode we are talking about  an uncomfortable and essential topic, and that is when your child is being bullied by their teacher.

For the context of this episode, I want to define bullying so that we are all on the same page.

A bully is described in the dictionary as a “blustering, mean, or predatory person who from a perceived position of relative power, intimidates, abuses, harasses, or coerces people. Especially those considered unlikely to defend themselves.”

There you have it, folks. It is implied in this context with the words abuse, harassment, coercion, that there is an intention to do harm.

Very often the “intention to do harm” is a little bit murky when bullying occurs between a teacher and a student because the teacher might be hoping to get a student to fall in line or motivate them to do better with their actions and words.

But if they're insensitive to a student's unique needs, the way a student learns, and a student's differences, their actions can be quite detrimental.

Subtle bullying happens all the time.

When overwhelm is how you operate

When overwhelm is how you operate

If I asked if you’re overwhelmed, you’d probably respond by saying, “Sara, I've got a kid with needs. My life is busy. I'm juggling so many things in addition to my other children, my home, my career. Of course, I'm overwhelmed, aren't you?”

The answer is no, I'm not overwhelmed because I support myself and manage my life, and that's something that has taken practice.

Overwhelm is a choice.

Please know that when I use the word overwhelm I am not judging you and I don't want you to judge yourself either.

But that does not change the fact that when you are in the state of overwhelm, your child is the one that loses out.

Have you fully considered how that’s impacting them?

Come find out how you can better support yourself on this episode.

Rocco Up

Rocco Up

On the podcast today we're diving into a topic that you've likely already heard about, especially if you've followed me on social media for any length of time. It's the new documentary film about my family called Rocco Up, and it's been a journey filled with lessons, relationships, and joy that I never imagined would be part of my life.

It's a project that we began almost three years ago. It started as just an idea to make a difference for other families living with autism. It's grown into a film that's entered into over 50 film festivals, and is showing at the acclaimed Hamptons International Film Festival here in Long Island in just over two weeks! It recently won the Best Editing Award at the Surfalorus Film Festival in North Carolina's beautiful Outer Banks.

I've received so many questions about this film from parents, just like you.

  • How did Rocco react to being filmed in the water and on dry land?
  • Why did I agree to a project that made me feel super vulnerable?
  • What do I hope to gain from this experience?
  • What is our goal for the film?
  • What do you hope  it will do for families who are living with autism?

Today I'm diving into all that, but I also want to share with you how this film is what birthed my new book (publishing date coming soon!) and my entire consulting practice. None of it would exist today if I hadn't allowed my family to step in front of the camera.

Dive into today’s episode to find out more, and get all the news about Rocco Up and how you can see it here!

What does stress do to you?

What does stress do to you?

Some people wear their stress as a badge of honor, especially if they're wrapping up their self worth in how much they do during the day.

But the stress felt by parents of neurodiverse kids is very real and I want to discuss it.

So many of them wind up in my inbox asking, “Sara, what's wrong with me?”

“Why am I so drained?”

“Why am I losing my patience with my kids?”

“Why am I becoming the mom? Who's yelling at the end of the day? I don't want to be that parent!”

I want to start this episode by saying that you have control over this. You don't have to be THAT person, but there is work involved in governing your own well-being that has to happen, and it’s just as important as the work you put into your kids.

I'm providing resources in this episode that will help you tremendously.

But before we talk about why parents of neurodiverse and medically complex kids are stressed, let's talk about what stress does to you, because it’s far more damaging than you think.

Do you keep the promises you make to yourself?

Do you keep the promises you make to yourself?

In today’s podcast episode I’m giving you a little glimpse into the lessons I’ve received in my own life recently. I know they will resonate with you in a big way.

This episode is centered around the fact that if you make a promise to someone else, you’re probably going to keep that promise. But what about the promises that you make to yourself?

So often people say things like, “When X, Y, Z happens, THEN I will go on vacation.”

Or, “when I retire, THEN I'll get healthy.”

“When kids go back to school, THEN I’ll prioritize better sleep at night.”

“When I get a new job, then I'll make the time to clean up my diet.”

“When I have more money, then I'll invest in the support I need to finally be happy.”

It's the when/then game. And what's really sticky about this is that when you get into that energy of denying something from yourself that you need and could welcome in right now, essentially you're saying you're not good enough. You’re telling the universe you aren’t worthy.

It’s time to clean that up.

Confession

Confession

It’s not a four letter word, but it’s one that no parent wants to admit to feeling: trapped.

Most parents of neurodiverse, disabled, or medically complex children feel this way at some point in their journey and it’s no wonder. Your child’s needs demand more of your time, energy, and resources than those of neurotypical children. Factor in that your job, friends, and family probably expect a normal level of productivity and responsiveness from you and you pressure yourself to provide then. it’s no wonder your energy is zapped.

On today’s episode we’re breaking down the circumstances that are creating this trapped feeling and what you can do today to release them.

When is it important for you to be disruptive in service to your child's wellbeing?

When is it important for you to be disruptive in service to your child's wellbeing?

What do you think being "disruptive" means?

When is it important for you to be disruptive in service to your child's wellbeing?

On today's podcast episode I'm asking you to get curious around where in your life you need to be more disruptive for this purpose because there's a lot to lose if you don't.

An interesting trend I've noticed in the clients I work with (especially the women) is that they recognize they've been people pleasers their entire lives. They've recently realized that doing so is hurting their own well being because they're short changing their own needs for the needs of others.

But that's not all. People pleasing also means they're not stepping up for their child as powerfully as they could be because they're worried about being viewed as rude, pushy, bitchy, or a nuisance.

To help us navigate this topic I've brought on Shauna Bryant, a brilliant coach, mom to three boys, and self proclaimed rebel rouser. In this episode she powerfully shares how people pleasing drove her right into burn out and how learning to be her own version of disruptive brought her back, more powerfully than ever.

She's evidence that you can do this too.

What you need to know about the CDC’s guidelines on milestones

What you need to know about the CDC’s guidelines on milestones

On today's podcast episode we’re looking at a topic that matters to you no matter how old your child is.

In February 2022 the CDC quietly changed their guidelines for three important milestones in childhood development and it rubbed many people the wrong way. Additionally, they did so without consulting professionals who work with children in a hands on fashion and it stirred up pushback from thousands of speech therapists and occupational therapists.

I have a very special guest, speech pathologist  Brittany Bohach, joining me in this episode to ensure you receive both parent and professional perspectives. Neither of us are here to tell you what to do or how to feel. Instead, our goal is to present relevant information to you so you can advocate for your child’s unique needs regardless of what the masses are doing.

Doctor's Office Trauma

Doctor's Office Trauma

On today's podcast episode we are talking about  doctor’s office trauma, a subject that doesn’t get much air time but can be deeply challenging for parents and children. Today, we’re discussing why and how this happens, what you can do to prevent it, and, most importantly, how you can heal from it and prevent the anxiety, stress, and fear from snowballing.

This is a topic turned out to be Pandora’s box for me. It was something I’d never heard about publicly, but when I began asking parents about it behind closed doors it became clear that almost every family had experienced it on some level and it left an icky taste in their mouth. While it’s inconvenient and even offensive, it’s also another opportunity for you to stand in your power as a parent.

Do you avoid new things because you're afraid of what might go wrong?

Do you avoid new things because you're afraid of what might go wrong?

On today's podcast episode we are talking about an exciting topic that also feels scary. This is the topic around supporting your neurodiverse child undertaking new experiences no matter how old they are.

Of course, what is new and scary for each family is different. Some parents avoid taking their child to the grocery store, afraid they’ll have a meltdown in public. Others desire to bring their child on a family vacation but have no idea how to make it doable and enjoyable. I support families in climbing this new mountain, regardless of how easy or intimidating it looks to others.

Recently, I had the unique experience of bringing both my neurotypical daughter and my neurodiverse son on a field trip to the New York Mets game. The experience for each child was fascinatingly different, and it required me to bring my parenting A game. What started off a little shaky turned into a phenomenal, confidence building experience. The same can happen for you too.

From Survival Mode To Confidently Thriving: a Case Study Featuring Kelly Alifano

On today's podcast episode I have the pleasure of interviewing Kelly Alifano, a mother of two amazing daughters whose confidence was crushed when she received both ADHD and visual processing disorder diagnoses for one of her girls less than 12 months ago. In her own words, Kelly said that on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best), her self confidence was a 1 as she struggled to navigate this new and uncharted territory as a parent.

As you'll hear in this episode, Kelly's confidence is booming today. I'm excited for you to listen as she discusses how she leaned on Full Potential: Thriving with Neurodiversities group for support, the action she took, and how she traversed the messiest parts of parenting with grace.

What I really want you to hear is that everything that's possible for Kelly is possible for you too. She's simply evidence that it is so.

The result of parents not being supported

On today's podcast episode we are having a frank conversation around what happens when parents of neurodiverse are not seen, heard, or provided with the tools they need.

Full disclosure: I get feisty in this episode. I actually had it outlined for weeks before I had the guts to record it because it felt so disruptive.

It is the result of many conversations I've had both online and in person with experts who work with neurodiverse individuals, therapists who counsel and support the parents of these individuals, and parents themselves.

On today's podcast episode we are going to talk about the newest tool in our family’s toolbox to help Rocco live an independent life, and it’s cuter and more fun than any other: Rocco's new service dog, Oakley!

We have had Oakley for approximately 3 weeks and he has already made a huge impact on our lives. We figured he’d be supportive for Rocco but never imagined how healing he’d be for the rest of us.

He’s not just an emotional support dog, he’s a working service dog who’s fully trained to empower his owner.

The biggest mindset block special needs parents are facing

The biggest mindset block special needs parents are facing

On today's podcast episode we're talking about the biggest mindset blocks parents face when raising a special needs child and it’s not what you think.

It’s sneaky, insidious, and very often imposed on you by others. The great news is you get to choose whether you take it on as your own. Much like a gift you’ve been given, you get to decide whether to receive it or send it back.

Admittedly, it took me a while to uncover this mindset issue since it’s not one I struggle with personally. Call me a Pollyanna, but I believe the sky is the limit for these neurodiverse humans. But not every parent feels the same, usually because their hopes have been squashed by the people who should actually be uplifting them.

This episode is incredibly powerful regardless of your child’s diagnosis or the challenges and stereotypes they face in every day life.

When family fun time isn't actually fun

When family fun time isn't actually fun

What does your family's fun time say about you?

One of the most profound and also heartbreaking trends with special needs families is that they don't have much joyful time together.

This is not a shock to me because if you look at human psychology, including Maslow's hierarchy of needs, many of these families are still in survival mode (or inconsistently moving in and out of it).

Naturally, survival needs are going to overcome those of simply having fun together.

And yet you deserve to have fun in your life and so do your children. You deserve to have joyful times together.

This episode is going to cover a few different but specific challenges faced by the families I work with and how you can use your tools to bring the tension down increase the joy instead.

What are you committed to?

What are you committed to?

On today's podcast episode I'm supporting you in asking some major questions about your parenting journey.

There's no question that parenting requires commitment. Parenting a neurodiverse child even more so.

Yet, there are many pieces of your parenting journey that would be MUCH easier if you actually committed to doing them.

Triggered? Good, keep reading because it's not what you think.

For example, I'm sure you know tons of people who are "interested" in improving their fitness. They talk about going to the gym, buy new clothes, and even book the membership. But what percentage of those people actually show up at the gym with commitment and do the work that needs to happen to generate the results, day after day?

Even when they're tired, even when they're not in the mood, they show up and do what they've committed to doing anyway.

At best, it can be boring.

Now I know what you're thinking. "Sara, how does this apply to me as a parent? Parenting isn't something I can't excuse myself from doing!"

Hear me out. You're here listening to this podcast because you want more for your life. You don't want your unique child to live his/her life based on stereotypes or glass ceilings.

However, just because you're checking the parenting boxes does not mean you're actually doing what it takes to elevate your child to the next level.

Let's take a closer look. In order to catapult your parenting to the next level you must first acknowledge your blind spots. This episode is here to help you do so in a loving, nonjudgmental way.

After all, "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" (Chinese Proverb).

How to rebound when your IEP meeting doesn't go in your favor

How to rebound when your IEP meeting doesn't go in your favor

On today's podcast episdoe we are going to discusss what to do if your child's IEP meeting does not result in the way you wanted it to.

Sometimes you go to your kids’ IEP meeting and everything transpires beautifully. You happily sign off on the dotted line at the end of the meeting and then carry on with your daily life.

Other times the outcome of the district meeting does not feel like it's in support of your child's wellbeing.

In that moment you have to ask yourself, “where do I go from here as a parent?”

It can be very hard to leave those meetings feeling upset or even as if you’ve been bullied.

I know first hand what that feels like.

Today’s episode is focused on how to pick yourself up off the ground when that happens. Where do you go from here to help your kid?

It’s IEP meeting season, whether you like it or not

It’s IEP meeting season, whether you like it or not

On today's podcast episode we’re talking about there good, the bad, and the ugly of IEP season. Most parents I speak with approach it feeling a combination of dread, anxiety, and worry that the outcome won’t be one that truly supports their child’s growth.

Trust me, I’ve been there!

My child’s IEP meetings are very different now (thankfully), and I’m here to share with you how you can approach them with confidence and be the bold advocate your child needs you to be.

I want ALL the neurodiverse people of this world to thrive. I know you do too. It starts with us not settling for less than what our kids deserve.

Are you with me?

The parenting obstacle nobody’s talking about

The parenting obstacle nobody’s talking about

On today's podcast episode I'm going to talk about a challenge that touches almost every family that I work with, in to my own.

Out of all the families I’ve worked with to date, I can think of only one that has not struggled with this challenge.

What’s the obstacle? One parent (usually the mom) acts as the leader for the child’s journey of advocacy, support, logistical management and emotional heavy lifting while the other parent is the less involved follower.

It leads to resentment and frustration on behalf of the fatigued leader, who feels like the follows isn’t pulling their weight.

Sound familiar?

Have you fully considered the fact that statistics say your partner is likely neurodiverse (and therefore lacking executive functioning) just like your child? And because professionals weren’t handing out ADHD diagnoses 30 years ago, your partner probably never received the support he or she needed.

Did the penny just drop? Good.

The Real Cost of Raising A Neurodiverse Child

The Real Cost of Raising A Neurodiverse Child

On today's podcast episode we are getting real about the cost of autism and neurodiversities and how the costs associated with having a unique child is have a real effect on families.

The time and energy that go into caring for unique child is just the beginning.

The average cost of autism per family that lives in the United States is an estimated $60,000 per year. This number has tripled since 2006.

On average, parents, especially mothers of children with autism, work fewer hours per week in order to be with their child and earn 56% less than mothers of children with no health limitations and 35% less than mothers of children with other disabilities or disorders.

Take a deep breath and process that for a minute.

Now, remind yourself that one in 54 children is diagnosed with autism in our current world, in the United States. In many other countries, it's not far behind and in some countries it's even more prevalent.

Remember, I’m a parent just like you and have experienced this in my own life. It doesn’t have to overpower you. Instead of listening to all the economic gloom and doom on the news, dive into this episode and see how you can still choose to thrive.

The Powerful Communication Tool that Can Change Your Life

The Powerful Communication Tool that Can Change Your Life

On today's podcast episode we're looking into a highly effective communication tool that you've probably never even heard about!

This tool is incredibly powerful for people who are non-speaking/non-verbal, but also supportive for those who can speak but are distracted with sensory issues or intense ADHD.

This tool is called Rapid Prompt Method (RPM). It came into my life years ago, but only recently did I become a certified practitioner myself (because I was tired of searching for an available practitioner to magically appear to help my child). It has been one of the most profound, life-changing communication methods for our family and it can be for yours too.

Have you really been 100% honest with yourself?

Have you really been 100% honest with yourself?

Today’s podcast episode applies to you regardless of your child’s diagnosis.

Maybe he or she hasn’t even been evaluated yet. Maybe your child has undergone testing and doesn’t quite fit into any box, but you are seeing evidence in your life that is putting your parent antennae up. You belong here too.

Today's topic is a trend that I've been seeing across the board with this population of parents to neurodiverse children.

It's a trend that I find problematic. I also relate to it very much because I've seen in my own life.

What I'm seeing is that parents of unique children want their child to thrive. However, they feel so demoralized by comparing themselves to everyone else's perfect families that it puts them into paralysis. It prevents them from asking for help because they feel shame and fear. It prevents them from raising their hand and letting people in their lives know they need support because they either don't feel at peace with where they're at yet, or they just don't know where to turn.

The Truth About Self Stimulatory Behaviors (Stimming)

The Truth About Self Stimulatory Behaviors (Stimming)

On today's podcast episode we are taking a closer look as self stimulatory behaviors, or “stimming.”

This is one of the biggest concerns parents feel self conscious about when I speak with them in my consulting practice.

They wonder if it's okay to let their child engage in self stimulatory behaviors, because there are different schools of thought around whether it's helpful or harmful. Many parents worry where the line is between a stim and an OCD tendency. Others notice it’s become crutch to keep their child calm and they don't know how to get rid of it.

We’re are taking a closer look at this topic because it is not a black or white issue. There's a lot of nuance here. I’ll tell you how I handle it with my own child, as well as help you to identify when a stim is positively or negatively influencing your child.

Assumptions You Want to Make

Assumptions You Want to Make

If  you’re like me you grew up hearing the phrase, “Don’t assume, because  it makes and ass out of you and me!” Even saying it now causes me to  flash back to my mom shaking her finger in my face (hahahaha, love you  mom).

Today,  I’m going to flip the script and tell you that there are a few key  assumptions that you WANT to make when encountering an individual with  unique needs, especially adults.

The  catalyst for this episode is that I've had the pleasure of recently  having powerful conversations with certified behaviorists and the  founder of Rapid Prompt Method (RPM), Soma Mukhopadhyay. RPM is powerful  method of communication and teaching that I'm now certified in, by the  way. These  incredible women stirred up MAJOR insights around why individuals with  special needs are not being offered the same opportunities as their  neurotypical peers. In short, they blew my mind.

The  best part is you and I, right now, can be in charge of creating a shift  for this population so that they achieve their full potential and allow  their brilliance to show.

What Are You Making Your Child's Journey Mean

What Are You Making Your Child's Journey Mean

When your child has a “bad day,” what are you making it mean about YOU as a parent?

A mentor of mine is always reminding his students that humans are meaning making machines. We color everything with our meaning.

If you sit down to really look at the meanings you're putting onto your child's journey (or your own, for that matter), you might be surprised at how many of them are actually interpretations vs. how many are REALLY true.

For example, what's true about me in this moment? Am I a good mom? Well, that depends on who you talk to. It's probably up for interpretation, right?

Am I a female? Yes. That's a fact.

Am I somebody who's fun and enjoyable to be around? Well, that's subject to interpretation.

You can see how so many stories you tell yourselves every day that are probably interpretations rather than the actual truth.

You, like everyone else on the planet, are attaching meaning to every event that happens in your life, whether small or large, and letting it affect your self worth

Today on the podcast we're taking a close at this, followed by simple steps you can use every day to create interpretations that actually support your journey as a parent rather than those that cause you to be so hard on yourself.

Are you getting pulled out of your Intuition

Are you getting pulled out of your Intuition

Today's podcast episode might sound a little "woo woo" at first, but stay with me! It's actually the catalyst for making powerful shifts as you step up and lead your family.

It's the power of noticing when you've disconnected from your intuition, and it's often hard for people to measure.

Why is it even important to talk about this? Because at some point ALL of my clients have come to me and said, verbatim, "Sara, am I going crazy?"

They ask me if they're crazy for knowing that something's going on with their kid, even though everyone else is denying there is a problem. They ask me if they're crazy for seeing a problem brewing when everyone else is rolling their eyes and telling them that they're overthinking things.

Have you been called crazy for listening to your gut instead of your mom or doctor when they tell you everything is "fine?"

What if I told you this is your superpower?

I'm serious. This is your most powerful tool as a parent, yet too many people are pushed into questioning their sanity, pushing down their gut feelings, and denying them altogether, only to regret it later.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PODCAST EPISODES I'VE EVER DONE, because it's going to allow you to identify if YOU are pushing down your intuition right now, and choose to reconnect to it instead.

Are you going to give your power away as a parent? Have you fully considered where you'll be one year from now if you step up as the leader of your family instead?

I said it a thousand times, nobody knows your child better than you. Nobody is going to get your success story out there for your child. More than you, not school, not the therapist, not the doctors.

Are you ready? Let's do this.
