Growth Coaching with Danyelle Jinks: Session 3

Growth Coaching with Danyelle Jinks: Session 3

There are often times in one’s career when they must put the work ahead of many other things in life. Sometimes, though I am not proud of it, there has been a need to put work ahead of family. Other times there is a need to put work ahead of other things that bring you joy. What happens though when a person has multiple things they are invested in that are a priority? How does one manage the challenges of career obligations and still meet all the personal demands of home life along with a desire to continue the recreational things you enjoy?

For many, I don’t think these struggles are unique; however, I do find that few people are willing to talk about it. For those with highly visible careers, I believe the avoidance of talking about these issues is due to the unwillingness to show vulnerabilities, especially when one’s personal brand is that they can do it all.

So what happens when your work obligations become so intense that you need to take a longer than expected break from something you love? In this episode Danyelle and I explore the challenges of keeping up with Satisfactionist Live while also ensuring top priorities are addressed. I also open up about some personal matters that have caused me to internalize and inwardly analyze; and how tends that can resonate in the work that I do. I share with Danyelle the feelings of vulnerability one has to not only talk about these things with a coach but to then put those things out there for the world to hear on a podcast. However, despite my own hesitation, I think that topics like these are important to address and share as it may be of benefit to others.

I hope you enjoy this latest growth coaching session with Danyelle and I. Please feel free to leave us feedback and if you think there is something out there who can benefit from the things we discuss, share this episode with them. We would greatly appreciate it.

Growth Coaching with Danyelle Jinks: Session 2

After an unplanned extended break, Satisfactionist Live is back; well, kind of. The live show is still a few weeks away from starting up again but during our hiatus we have continued recording episodes of our docuseries Growth Coaching with Danyelle Jinks. Over the next few weeks we will be releasing a new episode each week until we are back to our live shows.

So, why did the show get put on pause? We address some of the reasons why in this episode of Growth Coaching but suffice it to say; in February, Satisfactionist Live was forced to take an extended break due to a number of professional priorities that needed to be addressed. While creating content and having interesting dialog is a constant passion of mine, it is also important that I first meet the professional obligations I have committed to and are the core of my livelihood. Although my break was longer than anticipated, I was happy to be able to continue recording episodes of Growth Coaching and look forward to sharing with our Satisfactionist Live audience how a professional coaching relationship starts and can flourish over time.

In this episode Danyelle and I focus on continuing to build our coaching relationship while also discussing the pressure I put on myself as I work through the personal disappointment of being forced to reset my priorities. For me, Satisfactionist Live is a labor of love and it is something that requires commitment; however, even though I am only accountable to myself when it comes to producing content, there is a high degree of disappointment and failure felt when I am not living up to my own expectations. Danyelle coaches me through these challenges and seeks to understand what drives my feelings of commitment and disappointment.

Monster Talk

Monster Talk

Do you believe in monsters, ghosts, demons, or the supernatural? According to research about 1 in 5 believe demons definitely exist yet despite scientific evidence few are willing to consider that monsters aren't real.

In this episode we will explore the topic of monsters with Blake Smith and returning panelist Karen Stollznow. Blake and Karen are the hosts of Monster Talk a podcast series that explores the science behind cryptozoology and creates like Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster.

Blake Smith is a writer and researcher of matters cryptozoological and paranormal. He has been interested in the mysterious for decades and has been a “formal” skeptic of such claims since 1997. His conversion from believer to casual doubter to formal doubter was a lengthy process, the first steps of which were reading the works of Jan Harold Brunvand and his highly entertaining works on urban legends. You can find Smith’s articles on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Dr. Karen Stollznow is a linguist and the author of God Bless America, Haunting America, Language Myths, Mysteries and Magic, the novel Hits & Mrs, and the Kindle book Unforeseen Circumstances: A Short Story. Electoral College Reform (feat. George C. Edwards III)

Electoral College Reform (feat. George C. Edwards III)

While the Electoral College is a constitutionally mandated process of our political system, it is not without its critics. According to the National Archives, there have been over 700 proposals to reform or eliminate the Electoral College as we know it.

This week we will explore current thoughts on the electoral college as we welcome George C. Edwards III University Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Jordan Chair in Presidential Studies Emeritus at Texas A&M University.

Professor Edwards has also served as Professor of American Government at the University of Oxford, the John Adams Fellow at the University of London, and in senior visiting positions at Sciences Po-Paris, Peking University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He is an Associate Member of Nuffield College, Oxford, and was Founder and Director of The Center for Presidential Studies. Professor Edwards has also written or edited 26 books on American politics and policy making and is editor of Presidential Studies Quarterly.

Big Tech Alternatives

Big Tech Alternatives

While there have always been concerns over privacy and security when it comes to big tech  obtaining your personal information, in recent years these concerns seem to be growing. Now due to recent actions taken against some on social media this issue seems to have captured even more attention.

While there are certainly reasons to be concerned about who has your data and what they are doing with it, equally important is to understand the pro’s and con’s of migrating away from big tech platforms as well as the conveniences one may have to exchange away for improved security and anonymity online.

In this episode I sit down with expert panelist Issa Diao to talk about the reaches of big tech, the challenges of moving away from platforms run by Facebook, Google, Amazon, and where the market may go next as we consider our alternatives.

Politically Correct Language

Politically Correct Language

The intent of politically correct language is to avoid the potential of offending those who identify with or are part of a particular group. The intent of being politically correct is meant to be a positive step in building good relationships with others but as our special guest Karen Stollznow writes in her article Why Do We Hate Politically Correct Language, “One of the problems of politically correct language seems to be that it is usually created by outsiders, not by the people to whom the language refers”.

Join us this week as we explore the virtues of politically correct language with Karen Stollznow. Dr. Stollznow is an Australian-American linguist and author. She is a Researcher at the Griffith Centre for Social and Cultural Research and was formerly a Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. Her books include On The Offensive: Prejudice in Language Past and Present; Language Myths, Mysteries and Magic; Would You Believe It? and the best-seller God Bless America. Karen is a host of the popular science podcast Monster Talk.

Have We Lost The Ability To Communicate?

Have We Lost The Ability To Communicate?

Effective communication is an essential tool all leaders and managers of an organization must have. However, the trend seems to be that young people are choosing texting as their primary way of communication both personally and professionally. In this episode we will examine the art and science of communication and how it has evolved in the workplace over the past few decades. We will examine ways in which we might communicate better and how we can improve the ability to have an open and honest dialog without the risk of fear of being accused of being insensitive.

Join us as we explore this topic with returning panel expert Lisa Fey

Online Education

Online Education

As COVID has forced many educators to work in an online environment, as well as pushed many parents into the world of academia as well, online teaching has become a necessity for many. However, online learning is not new and is a delivery method that some have been working to embrace for some time because many students find the asynchronous learning environment beneficial for work life balance. With the broad shift towards online due to COVID, will it be difficult to return to the old ways or will online more quickly become the new normal?

Join us as we explore this topic with Morris Hamm, Director of the MBA program at Holy Names University

Free College Education

Free College Education

Over the past few years there has been an increasing level of discussion around the cost of a college education and whether or not the cost of the first few years of school should be reduced, subsidized, or free. Companies like Starbucks, Walmart, and Disney have partnered with schools like ASU, Perdue Global, or University of Florida to offer employees free or greatly reduced tuition to help students obtain a higher education degree. In contrast, there are many free online resources providing educational services for those seeking them. Websites like Saylor.org and University of the People offer free and very low cost education options while open source textbooks like OpenStax are focusing on broadening the ability for free and or low cost educational materials. What are the pro’s and con’s of a free education.

Salt of the Earth

Salt of the Earth

Salt is not only a vital mineral for the human body, it has been an important part of our world history for thousands of years. In fact, even the word salary is derived from salt. Today salt is mainly used for cooking but as many have seen at their local grocer, choices for salt are broad and seemingly growing. So what difference does it make and what types of salts work best for which types of food? To explore that question Chef Melissa Monsibais will help us understand what the hype is about salt and what pairs best for foods you enjoy.

Sangster's Coffee

Sangster's Coffee

Located north of Kingston and south of Port Antonio is a special mountain range in Jamaica that peaks at just over 7,400 ft high. Introduced to Jamaica in the early 1700’s, Blue Mountain coffee, is renowned for its mild flavor and lack of bitterness. What makes this coffee so unique is that the beans must be harvested from four specific parishes and grown between an altitude of 3,000 to 5,500 ft. These high altitudes along with the unique tannins and conditions of the Blue Mountains generate some of the most prized beans in the coffee world. Joining me for this episode is Bindley Sangster of Sangster’s Coffee and John Martinez of J. Martinez & Company to discuss the uniqueness of Blue Mountain coffee, the story behind the 44 acre Sangster farm and what it has taken to bring this special single vineyard coffee to market.  *** GRAB SOME COFFEE *** https://sangsterscoffee.com https://www.martinezfinecoffees.com

Universal Basic Income & Artificial Intelligence

Universal Basic Income & Artificial Intelligence

The pace at which artificial intelligence is being applied to everyday living is such that many don't even realize it is happening. Many of us come in contact with some form of AI on a daily basis and the data shows machines often do it better than humans. In the past we have figured out how people pivot when machines take over but historically machines have taken over jobs that were lower skilled motor function focused. This time it's different because AI is taking over higher skilled knowledge work. As higher skilled labor is replaced and populations grow, could this mean it is time to consider a universal basic income? Are companies that implement AI to replace workers at potential risk of AI regulation or taxation in an attempt to create an economic balance?

The Pay Gap

For decades we have continued to hear about the pay gap between the C-suite and frontline workers; however, despite the data few corrections have been made. For younger workers eager to be independent and get ahead, how do they compete in a job market where pay is lower and expenses are higher. For older workers, how do you get back to where you were after a lay-off? With so many people working more than one job, is that the new normal?

Episode 23: Brent Herd and The Awakened Dad

Episode 23: Brent Herd and The Awakened Dad

Probably one of the most enjoyable podcasts I have done to date, this week I have the pleasure of interviewing Brent Herd, CEO and Founder of Pacifica Media. Recorded during the 2018 Christmas holiday at the St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta, Brent shares. with me his work founding The Awakened Dad, an organization focused on talking about the challenges dads in corporate America face as they find themselves often exchanging family time for work.

There are no doubt many who have dreams and ambitions of making it to the top in business. There are also a fair number of you who are well on your way or in senior leadership roles within your organization. While there is a lot to be proud of as one carves a path to business success, the road to the top can be stressful, challenging, sometimes lonely, and often calls for personal sacrifices that may have lasting effects on one's family.

While we often have any number of cliche's or platitudes to describe the challenges faced by those climbing the corporate ladder, we are often  less likely to really talk about it. In this interview Brent opens up with some very candid and honest dialog about what he gave up on his climb to the top and as I discover, it was all too familiar. Chances are you too may be working through many of the topics Brent and I discuss as we seek to explore and examine just what it takes to be top in your field.

As mentioned in this episode, below is a link to Brent's video, which caught my eye on LinkedIn

Brought to you by The Satisfactionist Podcast

Enjoy.

Episode 22: The Monk Dude

This week I sit down with Dada Nabhaniilananda a.k.a The Monk Dude. In this episode I am joined by my time to time co-host David Valentin of Mr. Smith Studio. Episode 21: The Reboot

Episode 21: The Reboot

In this reboot episode of The Satisfactionist Podcast we welcome back some favorite friends from the shows past with David Valentine, Shah Qhan, and Issa Diao. Our panel of media experts talk about the upcoming Top Gun continuation, Issa remarks on a deep pull from the 80’s Top Gun era with his recollection of the TV series Super Carrier and the entire panel debate the production stylings and choices of Jordan Peele in contrast to his remarkable film Get Out as well as his reboot of The Twilight Zone

It has been some time since I last released an episode of The Satisfactionist Podcast. While I hate that I took a much longer than expected break from the microphone, this was in large part due to the many changes that were happening unrelated to the show. Since the last show I have relocated to the east coast, had a change with the work I am doing, and reset some of my personal priorities in an effort to get back to the things I love doing, which includes meeting and interviewing new and interesting people. This is why this episode it called, The Reboot.

Reboots are a bit of a thing as of late. Not just from the perspective of one’s work and career but in the mainstream movie industry. It seems that for a while now, we can always count on some sort of remake, reboot or continuation of a great film from the 80’s. While there are many reasons for this, I think in this episode David Valentin of Mr. Smith Studio’s hits the nail on the head when he talks about both the nostalgia and the formula necessary to make a great adventure film. Given our modern culture, the 80’s may be that last innocent time when youth were left to manage themselves in a world that was far less supervised than today.

As you listen to my own reboot of this show, please remember to subscribe using your favorite podcast platform. I have some great episodes coming out over the next few weeks and look forward to having you back and hearing your thoughts as well.
