Ep. 4.40: Yoga Sutras on Breathing Part 4 (2.52)
Yoga Sūtras 2.52 Yoga Sūtras 2.52, tataḥ kṣīyate prakāśa-āvaraṇam || Prāṇāyāma reduces that which covers our inner spiritual light || Breathing bridges the unconscious to the conscious. How? Physiologically breathing belongs to both the autonomic (unconscious) functions as well as conscious motor actions. The more we master our breathing the less unconscious we become. Our psychological conditioning - unconsciously stored in the body - gradually gets washed clean by mastering our breathing processes. This discussion goes in-depth into the psychology of being present vs being not present - which simply comes down to whether we give our attention to the process of perception or to the memory-thoughts that arise moment to moment. How does this relate to reducing that which covers our spiritual light? Because it is our conditioning - which is just memories in action - that suppresses our innate wisdom. There's more to the process so check out the discussion ... ! We also detail the various lists that get presented to help us recognize our conditioning: e.g. the six spiritual enemies, the five kleshas, etc. Live Class meets every Tuesday from 10:45 - 12:00 pm (California Time) To learn more about our offerings or to make a donation in support of our work, please visit our website: https://www.samjiva.com/donations David Miliotis - Samjīva Nilayam & Ashtānga Yoga Orange County samjiva.com  |  youtube.com/ashtangayoga  |  @samjivanilayam

Ep. 4.38: Yoga Sutras on Breathing Part 2 (2.49 - 2.51)
Yoga Sūtras 2.49 - 2.51 Yoga Sūtras 2.51, bāhya-abhyantara-viṣaya-ākṣepī caturthaḥ  || Beyond the objects of breathing – such as exhalation, inhalation and so forth – lies a fourth realm to prāṇāyāma (aka kevala kumbhaka).  || Today we practiced a simple yet very effective pranayama for increasing our lung capacity. We discussed the ratios to be used for breathing exercises and the process of making the breath very long & very subtle – the secret process for developing the not so mysterious but widely unknown fourth pranayama (kevala kumbhaka). Ep. 4.37: Yoga Sutras on Breathing Part 1 (2.49 - 2.50)
Yoga Sūtras 2.49 - 2.50, Check out the discussion ... ! Yoga Sūtras 2.50, bāhya-abhyantara-stambha-vṛttiḥ deśa-kāla-saṁkhyābhiḥ paridṛṣṭaḥ dīrgha-sūkṣmaḥ  || Prāṇāyāma is practiced by regulating the ratios of time and the location of the breath during, exhalation, inhalation & retention. It requires diligent observation and advances as it becomes longer and more subtle.  || There are many parts of the breathing process to learn & develop. Jalandhara Bandha helps us develop the stability of the structure throughout the breathing process and this prepares us for meditation or rather stabilizes our attention. The 胎息 tāi xī embryonic breathing pattern leads to stability: exhaling from the Mūla Bandha to the heart, then also inhaling the same, from Mūla Bandha to the heart - constantly drawing the energy in & up seeking back to our origin - deep inside the core of our core. Nothing - no state of harmony nor of disharmony - lasts forever. It is inevitable that things can only become so disrupted before they turn around and begin supporting growth once again. So when the Dharma, the principles of evolution, become extremely deteriorated, then it is time for the energies to reverse and for Dharma to once again come back into the world. Creation, itself, produces an instrument to initiate this changing tide. Thus, it is said that Krishna manifests Himself into the world.

Ep. 4.25: Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 33 - 43, The Insatiable Fire of Desire
Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 33 - 38, The Insatiable Fire of Desire: In this Bhagavad Gītā Satsaṅga, Sri Krishna discusses how desire – left unchecked –becomes insatiable: Greed can never be satisfied. This is the enemy to navigating our way through life in both small & grand instances. What is the remedy to this greedy enemy? To know the Self, and allow the Self to firmly compose the self. Ready? The subtler higher aspects of our self - once known by experience - cause us to naturally put down the less healthy aspects of our past behaviors & choices. This verse is talking about contacting that which is beyond the intellect as being the guiding force to cause supreme transformation. We approach this step by step according to our own process.

Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 33 - 38, Our Nature Our Dharma: In this Bhagavad Gītā Satsaṅga, Sri Krishna discusses the relationship between our own unique nature or makeup and our own personal path which is none other than our own dharma or what is referred to as our svadharma. Better death in one’s own dharma; another’s dharma is full of fear”  – Bh.G. 3.35   Our own Dharma is determined according to our own unique makeup. When we are on the right path - for ourselves - then even if we experience challenge after challenge after challenge, we feel committed to it. When we get confused thinking the grass is greener on the other side, and deviate from fulfilling the purpose of our nature, then we easily become distraught by challenges. Even simple challenges will rattle us. We may even invent our own dramas simply because there is a disharmony between the path we are on and what truly suits our nature. This is what is meant by saying that “another’s dharma is full of fear.”

Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 12 - 16, The Act of Sacrament: Life involves action. Ep. 4.13: Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 3 - 8, The Hypocrite Sits Still
Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 3 - 8, The Hypocrite Sits Still: This discussion clarifies what qualities someone should have if they practice the path of wisdom (Jñāna Yoga). Can anyone who enjoys philosophy embark upon this path or is there a rule of thumb to indicate who should practice the yoga of action (Karma Yoga) & who the yoga of wisdom (Jñāna Yoga)? In what way should the yoga of action be practiced so that it purifies the heart rather than creating more bondage generating ignorance. Ep. 4.12: Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 1 - 4, The Two-Fold Path to Yoga, Karma & Jnana
Bhagavad Gita Ch. 3 v. 1 - 4, The Two-Fold Path to Yoga, Karma & Jñāna: Karma Yoga & Jñāna Yoga are mutually supportive. Karma Yoga makes the mind fit for Jñāna Yoga. It is a spectrum of orientation. We orient ourselves as practicing yoga & doing work to purify ourselves, and gradually, we gain in wisdom and see things from a deeper perspective. The act of doing works never ends, but our intentions, our heart changes. Thus the shift from Karma towards Jñāna represents a maturation of our progress in yoga. Ep. 4.09: Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 56 - 60, From Preschool Yoga Basics to Advanced Theoretical Yogic Sciences
Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 56 - 60, From Preschool Yoga Basics to Advanced Theoretical Yogic Sciences: What are preschool yoga basics and what are advanced theoretical yogic sciences? Preschool basics are simple common sense things like don’t be so short sighted and stupid. Greed, fear, anger & the like simply cause to many obvious problems to be worth whatever it is we are so attached to. Let it go; don’t be stupid; think about the consequences. The advanced theoretical side of yoga is seeing through the subtle illusion of our identity falsely wrapped up in forms, feelings, thoughts, memories & behaviors. Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 41 - 43, Drona's Test & Arjuna the Eunuch: Welcome back after a months break while we focused on creating the new Shala space, Samjiva Nilayam. Thank you for your patience and support. It is an exciting time coming back together. Today, we tell a couple of stories: Drona's test demonstrating the profound value of concentration, and how Arjuna's curse to become a eunuch becomes a blessing. Ep. 4.05: Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 37 - 40, The Birth & Killings of Krishna
Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2 v. 37 - 40, The Birth & Killings of Krishna + The Yoga of Knowledge (Sankhya): In this episode, we hear about Krishna’s birth by Devaki & Vasudeva with the ominous prediction spoken from  the sky (Vahni Akasha - Ākāśa) that he would be the one to kill his uncle, the  insidiously evil Kansa (Kaṁsa), king of Mathura. All this as  background  description to the first verse of mantra Krishna Ashtakam (Krishnashtakam Kṛṣṇāṣṭakam) which references the killing of Kamsa &  his demonic henchman, Chanura (Cāṇūra). In Bhagavad Gītā verses we wrap  up the Sāṁkhya perspective (Darśana) and begin the teachings about yoga  - which are summed up in a word, “Equanimity”. Please take a peek and   hear it for yourself. Bhagavad Gita Ch. 2, v. 30 - 36 - The Yoga of Knowledge (Sāṁkhya): In this section Sri Krishna winds down the teachings on the true nature of creation and the individual, and reminds us that when the wind is at our back, when the tide is in our favor, when the window of opportunity is open, we must seize it. These are the times when our natural talents produce the most results for us, and we mustn't allow fear or confusion to undermine us. We also discuss some of Arjuna's superior feats of valor: his battle against  Indra & the gods at Indraprashtha and his battle with Shiva at Vijayawada where he was blessed with the divine weapon Pashupatastra. Ep. 3.01: Dr MA Jayashree - Yoga Sutra Chanting - Kaivalya Pada (13 Minutes)
I first met Jayashree during my second trip to Mysore, India in 2002. She has a strong voice that makes learning to use our own voice not only easier, but pleasant too. I instantly knew she was a valuable gem and took every opportunity to study with her while I was there. If you look at the date of my chanting book, you will see the project began that same year (2002). My following trip 2004, Jayashree began teaching Yoga Sūtras chanting. I am incredibly fortunate to have learned Yoga Sūtras chanting from her. I cannot imagine a better foundation for studying the philosophy then having the sūtras readily available from memory. If we are patient & persistent - as long as you never quit - we will always continue learning. How much we can learn is mind boggling! So do not hesitate, do not postpone. Whatever you value, do not think of how daunting the project may be, just take it step by step and do not ever quit! I hope you enjoy this recording of Jayashree reciting the next chapter which we will begin studying next week on Thu (10/22/2020). Ep. 2.42: Aditya Hridayam - The Heart of the Sun - Call & Response Chanting (1 hour)
The Āditya Hṛdayam is a mantra composed in verse (30 verses) taken from  the Ramayana (Rāmāyana). This mantra gives us success in our endeavors! The Sage Agastya taught it to Śrī Rāma in order that he may succeed in killing the demon king, Rāvaṇa - with all his ten heads that regenerate every time they are decapitated. It is very difficult to overcome our demonic tendencies. We can put them down, but they come back up. So this mantra in praise of the sun gives us the strength needed to overcome Ravana and all the unhealthy compulsive tendencies he represents within ourselves. Rama, having been exiled to the forest, was roaming with his brother & wife. At a certain point along their journey, his wife, Sītā, was abducted by Rāvaṇa. Thus Rāma went to battle. But Rāvaṇa was very powerful. He was the demon king of Srilanka. So Rama recruited an army and they attacked and fought to regain his wife, Sita. Rama fought with Ravana for days. He was very exhausted on the brink of death. But after some healing herbs brought to him by Hanuman and reciting this Aditya Hridaya mantra, he was refreshed and able to succeed in slaying Ravana! Harih Om! Jai Sri Ram! Yoga Sūtras, Third Chapter, Vibhūti Pāda 3.49 - 3.50, Oneness, Power & Renunciation: What is the fundamental that we must cultivate regardless of how long we have been practicing, how much we have learned or how advanced we think we have become? [If you think you are advanced then definitely you are  not.] Sūtra 3.50 brings up the practice of Vairāgya  (non-attachment/letting-go) again - it was first mentioned at the beginning of our journey in Sūtra 1.12 and has been explained in so many ways indirectly since. Keep going, keep developing Vairāgya because it leads us to unbounded freedom (Kaivalyam). Check out the discussion on either Youtube or Podcast. Om Tat Sat. Patañjali also takes us step-by-step through various places in the body. All this to assist our process of becoming more purposeful and more awakened in our lives. Chapter 3, Vibhūti Pāda provides us with a checklist for thoroughness in Rāja Yoga. These classes always express the Sūtras in a practical manner relevant to the modern Yogī / Yoginī. And in this process, you will learn to recite each sūtra, the meaning of each word, and also how the sūtras are inter-related to one another. Study of the Yoga Sūtras is a complex and intricate process that never ceases to fascinate & inspire our relationship with life & yoga for years on end. Ep. 2.31: Yoga Sutras 3.33 & 34 - Sudden Enlightenment of King Janaki + 10 Chakras of Krishnamacharya - David Andrew Miliotis - Ashtanga Yoga
Yoga Sūtras, Third Chapter, Vibhūti Pāda 3.33 & 3.34: Sudden Enlightenment of King Janaki + the 10 Chakras taught by Krishnamacharya There is always more than one right way to accomplish the way. Patañjali clearly allows for alternatives. Sūtra 3.33 states that - alternatively to the methodology presented from 3.17 to 3.34 - the goal can also be reached either by gradual flashes of one’s own insights or by a not so gradual sudden awakening. King Janaki, the famous enlightened Indian king, was awakened in a sudden flash by the brilliant young sage, Aṣṭavakra. However awakening happens, ultimately, the journey of Self-realization is a journey into the heart (YS 3.34). Patañjali’s list from 3.26 - 3.34 is more or less cakra based, and so in this class, there is a presentation of the 10 cakras taught by Krishnamacharya in his book, Yoga Makaranda. This review of sūtra 1.33 reinforces the necessity of embodying these divine qualities (Brahma Vihāras). One saturated with these qualities is not disturbed. Rather one grounded in joy & equanimity emanates a reassuring pleasantness to everyone & everything around them (YS 1.33, Citta Prasādana). Ep. 2.19: What is Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga, Samadhi, Sushumna Nadi & Enlightenment Anyway?
Haṭha Yoga, Rāja Yoga, Suṣumnā Nāḍī, Samādhi & Liberation   “When the prāṇa flows in the central channel (Suṣumnā Nāḍī), and the  mind has entered emptiness (Śūnya), then the yogī is free from all  karma.” – Haṭha Yoga Pradīpika Ch. 4 v. 12 Haṭha Yoga tries - through yogic practices - to bring the energy (Prana/Prāṇa) into the central channel known as the Suṣumnā Nāḍī. When this occurs in a big way, it creates the Samādhi, the yogic mystical experience of ones & liberation - well at least you are liberated while you are in Samādhi. Haṭha Yoga views this as the goal whereas Rāja Yoga or Patañjali’s Yoga  Sūtras (Yoga Sutras of Patanjali) views Samādhi as a tool to obtain a  permanent state of Samādhi called Dharma Megha Samādhi - the state of liberation, self-realization, Mokṣa (Moksha), Kaivalya, Nirvāṇa  (Nirvana). Samādhi is an important tool in the long process of purification required to liberate ourselves from the baggage of our past. #yoga #ashtangayoga #liberation #selfrealization #sushumnanadi #samadhi #hathayoga #rajayoga #patanjaliyga

Third Chapter, Vibhūti Pāda Live Class: Wednesdays, 5:30 - 6:30 pm (PDT) Youtube Video: https://youtu.be/9NU9l7lyCS8 May 13 – July 29 Vibhūti Pāda, can be found in Sanskrit & Chanting, Vol. 3, Pg. 54, or Vol. 4, Pg. 13. Books available in PDF & Print here: https://www.ashtangayogaorangecounty.com/books Chanting & Studying, 3rd Chapter of the Yoga Sūtras, Vibhūti Pāda: Chapters 1 & 2 lay the basis for the entire yogic process. Chapter 1 lays the primary foundational stone of clarity & clam. Chapter 2 gives the secondary step of self-analysis and asks us to dive deeply into the study & practice of the first four limbs: Yama, Niyama, Āsana & Prāṇāyāma. Once well established in these limbs, Chapter 3 presents an organized approach to our practice of self-analysis. This third chapter, Vibhūti Pāda, directs our attention to certain aspects of ourselves. First on the list: Develop the art of listening without superimposing our own thoughts on to what is heard. Ep. 2.15: Pranayama Intensive Day 3 - David Andrew Miliotis - Ashtanga Yoga
On May 25 - 29 2020, we had an online prāṇāyāma intensive. This was day 3.   After a short invocation, there is a talk about using mantras to regulate the breathing count or rhythm and then a description of bandhas as the unified use of the whole body - particularly, for Mula Bandha,  from the navel to the souls of the feet.   The last pranayama, we practice a special technique mentally reciting the mantra Om Namah Shivaya several times for both exhalation &  inhalation to make the breath long & subtle.   Comments are always appreciated.

Ep. 1.24: Yogic Experience vs. Enlightenment (Sūtras 1.46, 1.50 & 1.51) - David Andrew Miliotis - Ashtanga Yoga
Enlightenment (Nirbīja Samādhi) vs. the Yogic Experience - This week we finish the first chapter of Patañjali's Yoga Sūtras (Samādhi Pāda) discussing sūtras 1.46, 1.50 & 1.51: Patañjali tells us that even though yoga brings about great states of clarity & produces feelings of being in touch with our divine nature, he says this is only a Sabīja experience of reality. Keep going, keep practicing, keep cultivating yourself there is another possibility beyond what can be known & done. There is a state that is pure creative intelligence. In the first chapter, he calls this Nirbīja Samādhi which references the removal of all those things which obstruct the free flow of the infinite creative intelligence. In the fourth chapter (Kaivalya Pāda) he refers to this enlightened state in terms of how it acts by calling it Dharma Megha Samādhi (pouring forth virtue) … Listen to the chanting & the discussion and gain insight into the potential that yoga wants us to manifest … ॐ Tat Sat If you would like to follow along, with the chanting & lessons in this podcast, you can purchase our textbooks, Sanskrit & Chanting, through our website: ashtangayogaorangecounty.com/books, please enjoy and support this endeavor by sharing & reviewing it! Obstacles, Remedies & Immunity - Yoga Sūtras 1.30 ― 1.40: This week we discuss sūtras 1.34 ― 1.39, Remedies for Regaining Balance When Life has Gone Astray … Check it out … ॐ Tat Sat! Patañjali provides a list of various things we can do - i.e. various tasks we can apply the mind to - that will efficiently invoke balance back into our system. First & foremost, is to focus on bring the breath back into a smooth even rhythm (YS 1.34). Also mentioned is to focus acutely on something like exquisite music, or the subtle flavors in foods (YS 1.35). We could focus on the endless source of joy within through various yogic processes (YS 1.36). We could choose to get support from a dependable friend, Guru, mentor or God (YS 1.37). We could focus to remember & understand the significance of our dreams (YS 1.38).  Lastly, Patañjali open-mindedly states that actually anything the mind finds agreement with will can be used as a practice for restoring balance. Ep. 1.19: Obstacles - Immunity from Chaos & Breath as a Remedy (Sūtras 1.33 - 1.34)
Obstacles in the Yoga Sūtras 1.30 ― 1.40: This week we discuss sūtras 1.33 ― 1.34, Immunity from Chaos & Breath as a Remedy … Check it out … ॐ Tat Sat! Through the cultivation of maitrī (loving-kindness), karuṇā (compassion), mudita (joyousness) & upekṣa (even-mindedness) we become gracious. If we can become saturated enough with these qualities (The Four Immeasurables: brahma vihāras), so much so that no matter what pokes us in life, no matter how sharply we are poked by life, by others, we should bleed only these qualities: love (maitrī), compassion (karuṇā), joy (mudita), equanimity (upekṣa). This is the way to gain immunity, to cure ourselves of suffering. Our reaction to life, our self-generated suffering is itself the obstacle. Because, when our mind twists upon itself, we no longer see clearly nor can we experience happiness. When this happens, the first suggestion Patañjali teaches is to breathe with an extra focus on exhalation which grounds & calms the system. Ep. 1.18: Obstacles - Symptoms, Remedies & Immunity (Sūtras 1.31 - 1.33)
Obstacles in the Yoga Sūtras 1.30 ― 1.40: This week we discuss sūtras 1.31 ― 1.33, the list of symptoms, their remedies & ultimate immunity … Check it out … ॐ Tat Sat! Patañjali shows us the symptoms that give character to life’s obstacle - like being stressed, feeling dejected, having chronic or recurring physical ailments, and the loss of ease in our breath. Once these are noticed and we realize that we need to get back on track, we must then turn towards a single remedy for assistance. But, Patañjali continues taking us even further into the world of obstacles. Before he enumerates a host of various ways to regain our balance, he shows us how to become immune to all of this chaos in the first place - by the cultivation of maitrī (loving-kindness), karuṇā (compassion), mudita (joyousness) & upekṣa (even-mindedness) our mind & our experience of life becomes saturated with grace. Ep. 1.07: An Overview of the Yoga Sūtras Pt. 2 - David Andrew Miliotis - Ashtanga Yoga
Greetings - Namaste - ॐ तत्सत् In today’s Satsaṅga episode, we honor the Indian holiday, Gaṇeśa Caturthi, which occurred last Monday, 2019 August 2. We chant the Gaṇapati Atharva Śīrṣa Upaniṣat (Vol. 3, Pg. 30) and recite a verse from the Gaṇeśa Stotra (Vol. 3, Pg. 13) and learn that the spirit of Gaṇeśa is really about how we manage our own state of balance. This is the same theme highlighted in the first chapter of the Yoga Sūtras! After chanting we quickly overview how the 4 chapters (Samādhi, Sādhana, Vibhūti & Kaivalya Pādas) of the Yoga Sūtras flow from one-to-the-next, and then dive into a quick overview translation of the first chapter (Samādhi Pāda). Understanding the over-all meaning of the Yoga Sūtras gives us the proper context for understanding each of the 195 sūtras. So last week’s (part 1) and this week’s (part 2) will hopefully prove to be interesting, valuable & useful for you. Ep. 1.05: More on the Vṛttis, Imagination, Sleep & Memory, Yoga Sūtras 1.09 - 1.11 - David Andrew Miliotis - Ashtanga Yoga
In this episode we continue our discussion of the five vṛttis as explained in Yoga Sūtras, 1.09 - 1.11: Vikalpa (imagination), Nidrā (sleep) & Smṛti (memory), the first two vṛttis discussed previously are Pramāṇa (right understanding) & Viparaya (wrong understanding). We look at the three ways that knowledge is gained: Pratyakṣa (perception), Anumāna (logical inference) & Āgama (reliable source). These can produce correct or incorrect understandings. Is the knowledge true or false and does it or does it not correlate to an existing object?
