The city of Sault Ste Marie had 15 theatres between 1901 and 1923. There was a theater every few steps along our downtown core at one point in time and we are going to talk about a few of these city gems.
The first theatre in town was the Grand Opera House, constructed in 1903 by Albert Search at the corner of Bay and Brock Streets. It ceased operating in 1923, and the building itself was demolished in 1972.
This episode will talk about the history of Orpheum Theater, Princess Theatre, and Algoma Theatre! Listen now to learn a little about some of the theaters that entertained the Sault for decades.

Bid Farewell to the Old Year and Cheer to the Scottish Poet the Sault Celebrates Every Year
You know that old song they play in all the movies when the Clock strikes 12 on Dec 30th, marking the start of the new year?
Well, It's titled Auld Lang Syne, and was first written as a poem in 1788 by a Scottish man named Robert Burns.
He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide.
Cathrine Macleod (Owner of the Macleod Highland Dance Studio) shares her insight into the annual celebration and its prominence in Sault Ste Marie and our Scottish community.

Meet Makayla Legge, a female entrepreneur starting her side hustle Made By Mak out of a need for extra funds for fertility treatments. Her crafting turned into a passion and a self-care routine.
As a positive product of the pandemic, the Algoma Makers Market was formed, back in 2021. From 8 vendors in the Paint and Decor Concepts parking lot to over 80 vendors at the Machine shop with skating, drinks, and more.
The Makers Markets has given side hustlers, and local creators so much exposure in the community. In turn, it propelled them to sustain doing what they love and reach their goals.

We are coming to you today from my Nonni’s kitchen table and I'm here with none other than John Morassut my Nonno.
We talk about his life as an immigrant to Sault Ste. Marie from Italy as a 13-year-old, early education, how he met his wife, the Knights of Columbus in Sault Ste Marie, and his photography career and volunteer experience.

We are going to take you on a guided tour of what? A cemetery but not just any cemetery. The only remaining cemetery associated with the village of Sault Ste. Marie (1871), the town of Sault Ste. Marie (1887), and the city of Sault Ste. Marie (1912).

Dawson Block, John Dawson and his Family
This story starts with John Dawson, the head of a family with a long and significant record in commerce, public service and politics in Sault Ste. Marie.
He built the Dawson Block (the historic building next to the Sault Museum) in 1894 to house the family grocery business on the main level.
His legacy was not just laid in stone but carried through his family...

Bandettes and their 60th Anniversary Celebrations
The Bandetts are an all-girls Drum and Bugle Corps Group founded 60 years ago by Mary Wilson.
One of the most recognizable aspects of the Bandettes is their traditional uniform, which features a highland bonnet, mid-waist jacket, and plaid kilt.

Eric Wild was born in Sault Ste Maire Ontario on February 11th, 1910. He had a successful career as a conductor from the late 1920s till the 1970s.
We worked on some big incredible projects and traveled around the world with his music throughout the years.

Story of John Prince Part 2: Life in Sault Ste. Marie
We start just after the 1837 rebellion of Upper Canada, where John Prince ordered 5 Fenian prisoners executed by firing squad without any legal trial.
Because of his actions and the threats of another rebellion Sir, John A Macdonald sent him off to Sault Ste. Maire to become the first Judge of the Algoma District.

The Batchewana Moose Hunt of 1906 is, well, more or less what it sounds: a group of friends from around Canada and North America travelling to Sault Ste. Marie in order to hunt Moose and other game.
