Of why people are less generous on Xmas than the rest of the year! (Pt2/2)

Of why people are less generous on Xmas than the rest of the year! (Pt2/2)

Hello dear listener, here it comes the second part of a story about the fact that, at Xmas time, people, especially those usually inclined to generosity, donate less often and less money to charity than the rest of the year. And the reason of that is explained here (nope dude, it's not something related to the Grinch, nor to bad eggnog hangovers, and yes, it's quite absurd to publish the second part of a Xmas episode closer to Valentine's day than to Christmas itself...). Here's the script: https://www.sciencemug.com/2020/01/of-charity-experimental-economics.html Ciaz&enjoy!

Weird patent series (N°1): "The Bird Diaper"!

Oh hallo dear listener, this is the first episode of the "Weird patent series", a space, as the name suggests, dedicated to the most absurd things you humans have patented, invented, thought. An episode like this will be published every once in a while. In this very one, I'm telling you not one, but two patents filed to cover the invention of a diaper for birds. Yeah, you read it right, you're not hallucinating. Aren't you humans something? Find the script here&enjoy! https://www.sciencemug.com/2019/11/weird-patent-series-n1-oh-man-bird.html

The yum-yum bugs

Hello dear listener, here we go with a delicious story about environment, food and... bugs. Basically: "wanna help saving the world? Eat bugs!". Ahhh, who doesn't dream a juicy meal worm burger? Can you see a future when there is a new giant, in the business of fast food: McCricket? Well, apparently someone can, more or less. But, hey, jokes aside, there's solid science on the plate (uh, pun!). The script is here (scroll down the page): https://www.sciencemug.com/2013/02/gli-insetti-gnam-gnam-e-limpatto.html Enjoy&Ciao!

The explosive story of dynamite & the Nobel Prize!

Hallo dear listener, today October 21st, in 1833, Alfred Nobel is born. He's famous 'cause, in the XIX the century, he was the guy everybody wanted at their parties since he was a blast, had always explosive pieces of gossip and told hilarious cracking jokes. Oh, he's also the dude who invented dynamite. And he who created a prize you may have heard of. Thank you brave soul!

Thank you brave soul!

The gang celebrated the reason of this short audio visiting the homepage of every pub's website of Ireland and ending up arrested for disorderly conduct by Chief Wiggum after attempting to have a fight with a banner of the WSFUPBNG (the Wrestler and Sumo Fighters Union of Papua Brand New Guinea).
Luckily for them, the banner's wife (a lovely .gif of a cat doing a cat thing) was moved by the ridiculously scared expression of PiPs, and convinced her husband not to press chargess... Based on a true story! Ciaz!

Roses chocolates & Valentine's Day

Roses chocolates & Valentine's Day

Ohhh happy most fake festivity of 'em all aka Valentine's Day, dear listener! To celebrate this nonsense here for you a new episode 'bout a paper that tells something reeeally unexpected: red roses and chocolates are judged more positively near Valentine’s Day than during the rest of the year (at least in the USA). Wow, mind-blowing! Then it explains also why it's like that. Find the related post here: https://tinyurl.com/yytsrvhs. Enjoy&ciaz!

The roads the researchers & the map (Pt 4/4)

Ooooh eventually the scientists of the roads who did the map of the parts of the world that have no roads (and, in the process, by-discovered how to live in peace with the mischievous GPS with a taste for ruining your trips) explain why they decided to stalk the world's roads and why it is important to preserve roadless areas around the globe. The roads the researchers & the map (Pt 2/4)

Haaaaallooo dear English thinking-reading-speaking-hearing listener, in this new episode I'll keep on telling you the story of those scientists that create a map of the roadless areas still existing in the world, stalk 'em to find their whereabouts and score 'em according to how good they look when wearing wet shirts... Naa, but the science dudes actually check where the roadless areas are and get all judgmental about their (the roadless areas) ecological value. The roads the researchers & the map (Pt 1/4)

Haaaaallooo dear English thinking-reading-speaking-hearing listener, in this new episode I'll tell you the story of how ten scientists create a map of the roadless areas still existing in the world, then use it to find all the suspicious & big "X"es existing on land, ask around for "research" funds to get to those promising signs and start using highly technologically advanced tools (i.e. shovels) in the hope to dig up the Holy Grail of all researchers: tenure. Naaa, they do the map, though... Read the post here: https://goo.gl/Up4Wzk Enjoy&Ciaz! @sciencemug

Valentine's Day & the birth timing

Valentine's Day & the birth timing

Episode number 8 of @sciencemug's podcast tells you that on Valentine's Day there's an increase in births: women are influenced by the cultural value of this day as they associate positivity and propitiousness to this festivity and appear to have a certain control on the timing of births. The Valentine's Day birth story is told in 2011 by three scientist from Yale on a paper appeared on the journal "Social Science & Medicine" [a journal cofunded by the industry of chocolate and roses but highly opposed by the lobby of Halloween and the GAPP (the Global Association of Pumpkins Producers). Listen to the podcast to understand why...]. The text and comics are here: http://goo.gl/hdzTe8 Ciaz! SM
