Metaphysical Apothecary
By Scorpio Sisters
By exploring history's secrets and uncovering lost or hidden knowledge, we can develop a deeper understanding of how to heal our bodies, minds, emotions, and spirits.
"Metaphysical" means "outside or beyond the physical realm." An apothecary is a place people visit to obtain the knowledge, supplies, and medicine needed to heal themselves. Healing alleviates suffering and helps us achieve inner and outer peace.

Avoiding the Alt-Right Pipeline in Pagan Spaces
Alt-right spaces used to be easy to spot and avoid. Everyone knew to carefully vet evangelical churches and tread lightly in certain states and towns. However, as people leave evangelical spaces to find more fulfilling spiritual paths, they sometimes bring with them bigoted and harmful ideologies.
It’s one of the growing reasons why any new ideas and mysteries we come across need to be carefully scrutinized before we embrace them. Shannon and I love a history mystery as much as the next pagan, but media literacy and critical thinking are crucial to avoid falling into the alt-right pipeline and finding yourself in very scary situations.
Join Shannon and I this week as we lay a foundation for keeping yourself and your fellow witchlings safe in the craft.

Magick in the Modern Kitchen
Within pagan spaces, there’s often a lot of pressure to make your practice as *aesthetic* as possible. Herbs must be carefully housed in glass bottles and jars, candles must be in vintage-style candlesticks, and your altar should look like it could fit directly into the sets of Mists of Avalon.
Like many conformist views, attempting to adhere to this constantly is just silly. If you love glass jars and aesthetic items, by all means—use them! However, modern witchcraft sometimes requires a modern twist—especially in the kitchen.
Join Shannon and me this week as we examine and share our personal experiences with how modern appliances, ingredients, and cooking techniques can help bake up some truly powerful spellwork.

The Magick of Luck
Luck is a lot like apples, sometimes you have a good bunch—good luck—other times you find yourself with rotten apples—bad luck. But there’s a state beyond that where you have no apples at all and need to go out and get some. In regards to luck, this is a luck-free state that sometimes happens during mental, emotional, physical, and psychic numbness.
Join Megan and I in this episode as we explore the magick and spellcraft practices to manifest luck and abundance from a numb or luck-free state of being.

The Alchemy of Luck
Luck is a tricky concept, especially when it comes to your magickal practice. Belief in luck—both good and bad—is an ancient concept with a broad lexicon of superstitions, rituals, and traditions. Many of these traditions survive today in the practice of carrying good luck charms and following cultural or familial traditions. The goal is to decrease your bad luck while welcoming in the good.
But do any of these practices have a place in your craft?
Join Shannon and me in our latest episode to learn more about the traditions surrounding luck, the psychological implications of being “lucky” or “unlucky”, and methods for infusing your workings with more serendipitous energy. We also discuss how to avoid luck-based paranoia and the importance of having fun with these traditions.

Avoiding Trolls: Staying Safe While Practicing Witchcraft
Paganism is on the rise, and that’s worth celebrating. Certain spiritual beliefs are no longer compulsory, giving us the opportunity to build and find joy in practices created just for us. However—like any spiritual practice—there are those intent on spreading misinformation, using surface knowledge to manipulate others, and individuals determined to take any and all spiritual practices to the extreme.
In this episode, Megan and I discuss the difference between healthy spirituality and spiritual psychosis, trollspotting, and how to tell a cult leader from a legitimate spiritual practitioner.

The Dichotomy of Love Entities
Modern society has a tendency to apply modern ideas and symbolism to ancient entities, diluting their original meaning and purpose—especially when it comes to love deities. We’ve all seen the insipid depictions of baby Cupid with his quiver full of love darts, and Aphrodite depicted as a loveable airhead.
However, nothing could be further from the truth. As Shannon and I discuss in our latest episode, love has a multitude of facets—some sweet, some sour, and some downright deadly.

Feeling the Flow: Following & Riding Energy
Energy is everything and it is constantly moving, flowing, and changing. These are basic universal truths but can be difficult to wrap our minds around our personal energy, power, and magickal practice.
As practitioners, we raise, work with, and attune to the energies of our surroundings on an almost instinctive level. Sometimes, though, feeling, knowing, and following our personal energies can be some of the most intensive work we do for your growth and empowerment.
Join us in this episode as Megan and I discuss how we’ve become disconnected from the natural flow of energy, and explore how to start feeling and tapping into our own personal energy to heal the disconnection.

Spellwork & Safety: Witchling and Familiar-Safe Witchcraft
Magick and witchcraft can lean heavily towards aesthetics. When aspects of our rituals and spellwork LOOK good, it can make manifesting the desired results easier.
In this Episode, Megan and I explore the necessary balance between what looks good and what is practical and safe, especially for the tiny curious, joyous beings in our lives, our familiars, and our witchlings.
Join us as we discuss ideas on how to adjust rituals to be safe, include familiars and witchlings, as well as we both adapted our witchcraft and magickal workings for our pets, familiars, and the witchlings in our lives.

An Unkindness of Ravens, a Glaring of Cats, & a Coven of Witches
To coven, or not to coven? Most witches ask themselves this question at least once on their pagan journey—and the answer may change over time. Newer witches scratching the surface of spellwork and ritual can be especially confused by these questions:
Should I join a coven?
How do I find the right group for me?
What do I do when coven culture becomes toxic?
For our annual Halloween episode, Shannon and I will tackle these and other questions about this ancient tradition—from how covens began to their place in society today.

Admittedly, this podcast episode is a bit different than our usual fare. Generally, Shannon and I seek to dispel superstition and fear around witchcraft—both stereotypes outside the community and fearmongering within it. That often means breaking down myths around things that go bump in the night.
However, some things bump louder than others and have sharper teeth.
Though many things we're taught to fear in witchcraft have no bite, certain things should still be approached with caution. Energetic beings—like egregors–fall into that category. Join Shannon and I this week as we explore methods for dispelling and protecting yourself from these intangible entities.

Finding What's Sacred with Shannon
Self-love and expressing it comes in many varieties from daily self affirming mantras to regular scheduled self-care pampering sessions. Sometimes expressing self-love is defining and refining our values, beliefs, and understanding, especially when it comes to our spiritual path, practice, and magickal craft.
Find what is sacred is an act of self-love as it defines what you can and cannot bend or break without compromising the essential core of what made it sacred in the first place.
In this episode, Shannon explores what she finds sacred and how she defined it.

Meet the Witch: Low Energy Magick with Shannon
Between Lazy Witchcraft and Armchair Spiritualist labels hides a bias within the community that comes up and around every now and again. It's a bias against those with low energy and low stamina without compassion and understanding of why someone may have low energy.
In this episode, Shannon explores the meanings of these labels, her own reasons for practicing low energy witchcraft, and different ways to do low energy and low stamina magick for yourself, no matter the reason.

Krampus Magick
Every energy must have an opposite, and even a figure as pervasive and hopeful as Santa Claus is no exception.
Unlike the charming, rosy-cheeked man in a flying sleigh, Krampus doesn’t exist to deliver gifts—he’s here to deliver retribution. At least, according to common legend.
But there’s a deeper story here. Like most mythical beings, Krampus is a coalescence of thousands of years of stories, cultures, and reimaginings.
This week, Shannon and I explore the ways in which Krampus meets the popular legends, ways in which he doesn’t, and discuss how to safely call upon him in a time of need.

Retiring Magickal Tools and Materials
Whether you gravitate toward simple-yet-powerful hedge magick or prefer the intensity of ceremonial workings, every witch in existence has magickal tools—all of which have one thing in common:
They get worn out.
Cauldrons rust and crystals crack, wands break and robes rip. Sometimes, an item that you loved and used in every working suddenly feels lackluster.
And that’s okay. Nothing lasts forever.
That’s why this week’s podcast is all about decommissioning magickal tools. Join us as we discuss disenchantment, respectful disposal, and more.

Intention Vs. Correspondence
It’s a debate as old as modern witchcraft—which is more important, intention or correspondence?
This is an extremely divisive topic. In fact, we’ve heard people say that intention is completely useless if your correspondences aren’t aligned.
So, which is it?
Our answer? Both.
This week, Megan will be coming to you solo to discuss this sticky topic and share her thoughts on which one holds more weight.

Tarot Energy of the Witches’ New Year
Our solid, three-dimensional universe is—at it’s foundations—made of frequency and vibration. Frequency and vibration are simply numbers with a physical expression—meaning all we are and all that we experience is based in numerical arrangements.
This is the basis of numerology. When combined with many witches’ favorite divination tool—tarot cards—numerology becomes a powerful tool for discerning and planning for your personal path.

What Is A Ghost Anyway?
Most magickal practitioners are no strangers to the art and science of paranormal investigation. Many of us regularly commune with intangible beings, spirits of place, and the things that go bump in the night.
Yet, one question lingers—what exactly are ghosts? Are they memories? Spiritual remnants? Or, something more sinister?

Energy Stewardship for Self-Love
Self-love is sometimes an ugly thing. Though it often looks like wearing clothes you love or indulging in a childhood hobby, other times it means holding yourself accountable, showing yourself compassion through a depressive episode, caring for your body even though you want to do the opposite—and doing the messy work of stewarding your energy.
Because setting and enforcing boundaries is MESSY work, y’all. It’s better in the long run, but the immediate may mean angry loved ones, grieving lost relationships, and fighting our own toxic instincts.
Fortunately for us, we’re witches. And while magick isn’t an automatic fix, it’s a dynamic tool we can reshape and use in infinite ways to help us get comfortable keeping our energy—and ourselves—safe.

With everyone practicing, experiencing, and understanding magick differently, embracing how our psyches engages with energy can be a boon in our magickal and spiritual paths. Intro/Outro: Magical Transition by Kevin MacLeod
What’s Your Psychic Temperament?
Everyone practices and experiences magick differently—and that’s okay! In fact, it’s pretty wonderful to have opportunities to learn from and work with a diverse array of magickal folx. But have you ever wondered WHY we’re all so different?
One factor in how we process and practice our craft is the psychic temperament we embody. This week, Shannon and I dive into renowned author Kurt Leland’s trifecta of psyche types that describe how we process information, relate to intangible energies, and embody magick.

House of Practical Magick
Shannon, here, doing my first solo episode (working my throat chakra a bit) and as such decided to discuss astrology and in particular, a little-known subject within astrology, the Witch-Rising sign.
Astrology is a fun and multilayered topic. Case and point, the house of practical magick and the witch-rising sign are the natal 6th house and the sign ruling its cusp. The 6th house in astrology often gets a bad or even boring reputation. After all, the house correlates to routines, health, and work. But that means we can easily extrapolate this to include our magickal routine, everyday witching, and practical magicks.
In this episode, I offer ways to start interacting magickally with our witch-rising signs–the house of practical magick–in honor of our practical magick summer.
Join me in exploring astrology beyond our Sun and Natal Rising Signs.

Incognito Magick for the Hidden Witch
In many ways, modern witches are incredibly lucky. Throughout most of history, practicing magick was reserved for a select few—priests, seers, sorcerers, and the like. They had many names, but their purpose was always to learn the mysteries and carefully select others to learn them and pass them on.
After that came the era of secrecy, when witchcraft, magick, and folk practice of any kind was relegated to the shadows, lest those performing it were arrested—or worse.
That era is fading, but not fast enough for many of us. Those of us who grew up steeped in Christian and other fundamentalist dogma (or who are still there) likely understand the need for sacred hiding places and methods for practicing our craft in plain sight.
It’s okay. We see you. And we can tell you, things get better.
Until you can practice freely in the light, we’ve provided some ideas and methods for studying and practicing secretly and safely. If nothing else, remember, loved ones, that only you control what’s in your mind and your heart.

Deconstructing “Bad Luck” Paranoia
In this final installment of our mini-series on superstition, Shannon and I tackle the most common reason superstitions exist—fear.
Fear of the dark results in terrifying tales of night-dwelling monsters that’ll kidnap you or eat you alive. Fear of losing money results in little rituals designed to keep your prosperity close. Fear of bad luck itself results in countless tiny charms and rituals you can use to keep it at bay.
During this episode, we discuss the creation of fear-based belief systems, how to validate or invalidate them, and how to avoid falling into the trap of “bad luck paranoia.”

Post Script from Shannon: In our blog article, The Thorny Side of Flower Magick, I mention using a flower tea to support the expulsion of a malicious entity, a mimic, from Megan's space and keep it from attempting to transfer to my space through our shared bonds. If you listen carefully, you might hear something that isn't quite an echo, even after I've tried to clean up the quality. Check out the article, brew up some exorcism reinforcement flower tea, and kickback listening to the episode. Enjoy!

Is Superstition Magickal or Mundane?
Does superstition have a place in the magickal world? As witches and magickal practitioners, should we be ignoring superstitious beliefs, or paying close attention to them? Can they have an affect on our daily lives and our magickal practice?
The answer to each one of these questions is yes—and also no. The world of superstition is deeply nuanced and rooted in culture and folklore. Examined closely, superstitions also reveal our ancestors had practical, tongue-in-cheek ways of handling problems common to their daily lives.
This week, Megan and I discuss the origins of common superstitions, how they affect magickal practitioners, and different ways to approach them in terms of our spellwork.

Tales of the Not-Deer, and Other Cultural Superstitions
The definition of superstition is “a belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge, of the ominous significance of a particular thing.”
Not based on reason or knowledge? Sometimes.
But not where I’m from. Appalachia is the world of Not Deer, Things in the Cornfield, and What Goes Bump in the Night is None of Your Goddamned Business. Sure, some of the superstitions around these things are practical—deer are dangerous when cornered, cornfields are easy to get lost in, and staying indoors at night keeps you safe from predators (both animal and human).
However, there’s a supernatural component to cultural superstitions that—on closer inspection–begins to hold a curious amount of water.
This week, Shannon and I examine the world of cultural superstitions and their origins—both mundane and spine-tinglingly magickal.

Agents of Chaos: Working with Tricksters
“Trick” has many different meanings. Sometimes tricks are entertaining physical feats or sleight-of-hand manipulations. Other times, tricks are nasty, mean things intended to humiliate or harm.
Tricksters are viewed in much the same light. These clever, canny characters appear across folklore, mythology, and pop culture, ideally positioned to disrupt the status quo. Agents of chaos, they manipulate and deceive to create as much turmoil as humanly (or, often divinely) possible.
However, as their name implies, tricksters are a tricksy bunch with a multilayered nature. Though sometimes their goal is to ruin someone’s day (or millennium), they’re also capable of deep compassion and empathy—the result of which are usually tricks that turn the tables in their venerants’ favor.
In this episode, Shannon and I explore the many facets of these fascinating beings—the good, the bad, the ugly and the incomprehensible.

The Dark Side of Solar Magick
Solar magick has a TON of positive associations, and with good reason! The sun is one of the key factors to sustaining life on our planet. It warms the earth, stimulates our bodies to produce vitamin D, enables plants to photosynthesize, and helps us produce serotonin.
Like the sun itself, solar magicks focus on projecting our will and intention into the cosmos for the greater good. Solar energy is all about moving forward, gaining momentum, and garnering more—more knowledge, more money, more strength, just more.
However, just like anything else, we can overdo solar magicks. Projecting our energy and exerting our will on world around us can cause burnout and harmful feedback loops.
In this episode, Megan and I talk about the pros and cons of solar magicks, how too much of a good thing can become toxic, and ways to recover from spiritual “sunburn.”

Creative Circles and Sacred Spaces
Cast the circle, work the spell.
Phrases like these send a happy shiver down my spine. There are few things I enjoy more than the tingly pressure of raising energy to augment a ritual or working. And, let’s be honest, one of the most appealing things about witchcraft is the ~a e s t h e t i c~.
However, it can be easy to get caught up in the look of the thing and forget that we’re the arbiters of our own power. Not the embossed chalice or perfectly arranged altar.
Us. The witches themselves.
In our latest episode, Shannon and I tackle beautifully mundane ways to create sacred spaces and cast circles. We discuss quick and dirty ways to carve out a sacred space, how mundane objects can create the most powerful circles, and reinforce how to make your practice undeniably *yours*.

Can Deities Be Trendy?
If you’re active in pagan communities online, it’s likely you’ve noticed a trend developing over the last several years—every other person I talk to is working with Loki. Or Lucifer and Lilith. Possibly also Hades. And the infernal divine, too.
That can’t be right, can it? Not everyone can work with the same entities, that’s just too convenient.
Or is it?
Actually, it’s not all that strange for entities, deities, and traditions to run in trends throughout the pagan community. It just defies some of our human sensibilities.
This week, Megan and I explore trends in paganism from the late 19th century to modern-day and discuss how and why particular practices, ideologies, and even deities rise and fall in relevance to the context of each decade.
Also, I have a cold and you can hear it in my voice. Please forgive the blurred and slurred wording from time to time.

Magick in Music
Music is the very embodiment of magick. Sounds and vibrations are arranged in ways that evoke an immediate physical response from us. Play any beat, and those who hear it will begin moving to the rhythm. Quick tempos give us energy, while melodic ballads bring us catharsis.
Music also has a profound effect on our ability to heal. It’s been used to ease pain and anxiety, trigger memories in dementia patients, and is being studied as a treatment for certain chronic illnesses.
However, we don’t have to wait for the research. Witches have understood the power of music for thousands of years. Join Shannon and I this week as we dive into the medical and magickal benefits of music both ancient and modern.

Who the F*ck is Throwing Books on My Floor? Identifying Deities, Spirits, Guides, and Ghosts
If you work with the spirit realm long enough, chances are you’ll encounter some pretty weird phenomena. Sometimes this is just our senses expanding, but other times it’s…something else.
An entity. Someone or something that wants your attention and means to get it by throwing proverbial rocks in your path. Or, more literally, books on your floor.
This week, Megan and I talk about how to identify these entities, assess their inventions, and what to do about them.

Post Holiday Self-Care: Digging Out Roots and Breaking Bonds
The post-holiday icks are REAL y’all. The winter holidays are a fantastic time to catch up with loved ones and see far flung family members, but absolutely everyone has that ONE aunt, uncle, frenemy, cousin, etc. who really gets under their skin.
(Or maybe it’s more than one. Maybe it’s everyone. We still got your back.)
Even if there isn’t open animosity between you and any of your family members, it can still be exhausting to navigate political differences and generational divides ESPECIALLY in what we’ve dubbed the Screaming ‘20s.
These kinds of interactions can leave us feeling energetically drained and more susceptible to (both intentional and unintentional) hooks, roots, and other attachments that keep us mired in the Bad Place.
Join us this week as we talk about how to salt those roots, re-align your vibe, and reclaim your energy. (You might even hear some Aunt Gladys tsk'ing in the background, because we swear she was haunting us this time.)

Gratitude Magick
Gratitude is such a loaded word.
Objectively, it represents recognizing and feeling joyful for all the beautiful things we have in our lives. Loved ones. Pets. Sunrises.
Y’know. The good stuff.
However, gratitude has a dark side. All-too-often, both the word and concept are used to bully us into pretending that our lives are shiny and perfect and that nothing bothers us. That, in fact, we don’t have the *right* to be bothered because we’re too busy being grateful! Right?
Nope. That, dear friends, isn’t gratitude. It’s an illusion.
See, it’s okay to let yourself acknowledge lackluster days and bad moods. That doesn’t mean you’re not grateful. It just means you're human. And there’s magick in that, too.
In our latest podcast, Shannon and I discuss the beauty and magick of true gratitude, and what to do when those good vibes seem just beyond our reach.

Ancestor Work and Veneration
Ancestor veneration has a history eons long. It’s pervasive, existing across both time and cultures. Everyone, from little children to the elderly, feels a spark of reverence and wonder at the mention of those who’ve come before us.
In pagan circles, ancestor veneration takes on a magickal sheen. We not only honor those who came before us, we reach out and communicate with them. We ask them for guidance and wisdom, which they can sometimes provide.
But what happens when they can’t?
Join Megan and me this week as we navigate the sticky twists and turns of ancestor communication, including how to do it safely and a discussion on breaking generational curses.

The Truth About Dark Deities
Why is it, in stories about gods and myth, that those associated with the underworld are always the villain?
In the Disney film, Hades is the evil megalomaniac who wants to kill Hercules and release the titans. The MCU’s Hela is a vengeful harridan, whose goal is to rule Asgard. Most portrayals of Lilith color her as a succubus in thrall to Lucifer, and Lucifer himself is characterized as the most evil being ever to exist.
Scary stuff, right?
Or is it?
A critical examination of these beings’ stories and legends quickly reveals that popular media has twisted their tales to create bad guys for heroes to fight. Not only are these deities not villainous...they’re kind, empathetic, supportive and protective of those who follow them.
This week, Shannon and I kick off October with a deep dive into the nature of the dark deities we know and love.

Diversity and Inclusion in Witchcraft
The magickal community is one of my favorite communities, ever. It holds such a wealth of diversity, knowledge, and opportunities to build relationships and communities that are inclusive and enriching.
However, just like any community, it has its murky spots.
The loud-but-uneducated insisting they know best.
Toxic gatekeeping that breaks apart communities.
Privileged mindsets that (often unintentionally) alienate certain groups.
This week, Megan and I will be talking about how to identify these (and other) problems and ways to address them.
These subjects are challenging ones, but the pagan community is (and should remain!) safe and inclusive for all who come to it in good faith. All of us can have a hand in ensuring that tradition continues.

Witchcraft That Breaks the Rules
Does anyone else remember their first forays into witchcraft? I do.
I had left behind a very rigid religious tradition to search for spirituality that fit who I was as a person. My fellow Scorpio sister, Shannon, had been encouraging me to explore witchcraft and paganism for a long time, so I took a few tentative steps in that direction…
...and immediately felt confused, intimidated, and frightened. There were so many people saying so many different things, tossing out rules and giving contradictory accounts of the “right” way to be a witch.
It took me a little while to sort through this stew of opinions to discover what the root of witchcraft is, and what it means to me. I now have a rich, fulfilling practice unique to my spiritual needs that’s growing and changing as I do.
Join Shannon and me this week as we discuss how to sort through the noise and create a practice of your own!

Making the Mundane Magickal
We’re just one month away from the emergence of autumn, the perfect time of year for some exquisitely mundane magicks.
Traditionally, the overlapping time between the end of summer and the start of autumn was used to prepare homes to endure the coming winter. Roofs were patched, windows were insulated, chimneys cleaned and reinforced. People also took the time to give everything a really deep scrubbing, knowing that they’d be spending weeks at a time indoors.
I find this tradition as magickal as it is practical. Since our world is inherently magickal, every act we take *is an act of magick.*
Preparing and cleaning our homes is perhaps one of the most mundane things we do. But when viewed through witches’ eyes, even this simple necessity is transformed into something extraordinary.

Walking the Liminal
Have you ever considered how many structures are designed solely to connect two points?
Stairwells.
Hallways.
Bridges.
If you linger in these spaces for “too long” you may feel a strangeness wash over you—an urgency to leave that *between* and move to a space meant to be occupied for longer.
However, next time you feel that strangeness, I urge you to stop for a moment. Let that weird energy settle into your bones. Feel the richness of *possibility* that exists in the between.
These, my dears, are liminal spaces. And they’re positively oozing with magickal potential.

Different Shades of Color Magick
Color magick seems like kind of an elementary concept.
Blue is good for water energy and healing.
Black for banishing, red for vitality, purple for psychic awareness.
But, folx, think about it. Literally THOUSANDS of colors exist across nature and throughout our modern world. This incredible, undefined playground is perfect for really diving deep into experimentation with what’s possible, including:
Creating your very own custom color palette
Naming or renaming obscure colors to fit specific purposes
Building personal guidelines for working with colors “in between the lines”
Using hidden colors to evoke specific energies
Playing with light to heal, manifest, and summon specific outcomes
And that’s just a few possibilities for VISIBLE color. There’s a whole spectrum of INVISIBLE light we can’t see, but can still tap into energetically.
Join Shannon and me this week to discuss new and interesting ways to blend color magick into your daily practice.
