Today's episode we talk about two men who chose death by committing suicide over being accused and possibly charged for multiple murders.


The first case involves Joe Ball. A veteran of WWI who became a bootlegger during the Prohibition. After the act was ratified, he opened a saloon in Texas and brought in six alligators to draw in more patrons. Soon his barmaids began disappearing and suspicions rose when the authorities finally had solid evidence, he committed suicide.


The second case involves Dallen Bounds, a 28-year-old born in Ashland, Oregon. He eventually moved to South Carolina. In 1999, he murdered at least four people. Two days before Christmas, murdered two people and his actions launched an extensive manhunt. While the authorities were searching for him, he broke into the house of an elderly woman, taking her and her adult daughter hostage for several hours. When the authorities were closing in on him, he committed suicide.

Carroll Edward Cole was only 8-years-old when he committed his first rumor, but the boy's death was ruled an accidental drowning. A petty criminal in his teens, when he was 22-years-old, after attacking two couples parked along lover's lane, he called the authorities and told them he was having violent fantasies about strangling women. In and out of mental institutions over the next three years, where one doctor noted that Carroll was afraid of the female body and in order to perform sexually, he would first have to kill the woman. That doctor approved Carroll's release from the facility shortly after that. Several years later, he checked himself into another mental hospital where the doctors took note of his murderous fantasies, but opted not to admit him for treatment. Instead they gave him a bus ticket and sent him to San Diego. That set off his murder spree.
