The Prodigal Son

The Prodigal Son

Luke 15:11-32

11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:

12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing.

26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.

27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.

29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.

31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

Turning to Jesus Christ

Turning to Jesus Christ

- John 1:1-15

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) 16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b] is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

- Colossians 1:16

16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

- Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

What does it mean to be a Christian Part 3 - Running the Race

What does it mean to be a Christian Part 3 - Running the Race

Part 3: The Christian Race

When in a Race, our attitude, faith in our teacher, Endurance, and urgency is different.

When the Apostle Paul was near death, he wrote to one of his disciples, Timothy. In 2 Timothy 4:7 Paul says “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Paul

Paul also said while writing to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 9:24
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to take the prize.”

A. Attitude: As Pastor Todd White says it so well, “I don’t get an attitude, I get gratitude.” The runners who win races never have excuses. You would never hear the winner of a race say, “It’s so hard to run in the rain... its too cold... the other runner made a mean face at me!” No, a winning attitude is one of gratitude. Winning runners are grateful for the challenge, the opportunity to grow, and they focus only on the prize.

B. Faith in our teacher (coach): As an athlete trains for a race, so must we train as Christians, and our training is dependent on having a good trainer, teacher, or coach. As Christians, we have the best teacher, the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:5 says, “For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.”
(Elaborate)
‭‭
C. Determination: In the same letter that Paul wrote to Timothy about fighting the good fight and finishing the race, Paul talks about enduring the suffering and hard work involved in this great race.

“You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭2:1-10‬

D. Urgency:

Revelation 3:11 ESV
I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown

John 9:4 ESV
We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work

1 Corinthians 7:29-31 ESV
This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.

What does it mean to be a Christian? Part 2: The calling to Christianity (Becoming a Christian)

What does it mean to be a Christian? Part 2: The calling to Christianity (Becoming a Christian)

Part 2: The calling to Christianity (Becoming a Christian)

A. God’s Calling

The Bible tells us that we are called to Christ by the Father. John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”

Jesus knew everything about you before the world was created. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.””
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭1:5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

B. Understanding Sin

God is perfect in every way, and He is completely Holy (set apart).

According to the apostle Paul, all have sinned against God and have fallen short of God’s glory. (Romans 3:23). The world views this fact with pride, but the truth is that we cannot understand God’s true holiness while on earth. - 1 Samual 2:2 There is no one holy like the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock like our God. - Isaiah 55:9
"As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” - Exodus 33:19 “And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.”

Sin is a result of satan’s desire to be God and his influence on us through temptation. All sin is rooted in the original sin to be God or the rejection of needing God.

C. Giving your life to Christ

What we are “to do”

The act of “being saved” is not really an act at all. God knows your heart and your thoughts. I know that giving your life to Christ can be silent, and private. However, the the apostle Paul has given us a clear definition of what it means to give your life to Christ. He says in Romans 10:9 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” And in 1 John 1:9 it says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

There is a difference between being saved by grace and living your life in Christ’s righteousness. However, the Bible is very clear that the two are a package. We are not saved by what we do, but our faith is no good if there isn’t evidence of our faith in how we live our lives.
