Domestic violence is a widely talked about topic. Stories of domestic violence through the gender lens are the most common perspective. How about we shift our focus towards other identities? In this podcast, we unravel how the multiple identities of refugee women interact and make their experience of domestic violence different from other members of society. Join co-hosts Junni, Laura and Mara together with Ms Alissar El-Murr, a senior researcher at the Australian Institute of Family Studies and Ms Jessica Harkins, a Practice Specialist at Settlement Service International Australia, as they dive deeper into the discussion of domestic violence in Australian Refugee Communities. How does the experience of domestic violence of refugee women in Australia different from the other members of the society? How do organizations in Australia tailor their response framework to women of refugee backgrounds? This podcast raises awareness and hopes to bring refugee women's experiences of domestic violence out of the shadows.

Whether it is you or someone you know, you probably have experienced someone who has struggled with mental illness at one point in their life. In this podcast, we dive deeper into the cooperation between different emergency workers when they encounter situations in which someone is violent due to their mental illness. “Our loved ones” introduces the problem of intimate partner violence. Not everybody is able to detect a victim. And not every victim is able to talk about this issue. With a social worker and a psychologist, “Our loved ones” will offer you tools to perceive signs and to help victims by having a better understanding of the situation.

Furthermore, while a correlation between disasters and rise of intimate partner violence has been identified, measures taken by the French government to prevent the spread of COVID-19 had multiple effects. Although it tried to protect the citizens against the virus, it also hurt a lot of people. With this case study, we try to understand this complex issue by approaching the psychological, sociocultural and ethnic aspects.

“Our loved ones” has been created by three first year students of the Bachelor Security Studies from Leiden University.

Ambulance personnel have to deal with violence very frequently, as being attacked while trying to help is a regularity for them. 

What kind of violence are we dealing with? What factors influence violence and how are they predicted? What are the psychological consequences and how is it being monitored? And of course, what can WE do about it?

In this podcast, the students talk with (ex-)paramedics who share their personal stories to provide with an insight in what is, apparently, daily business.

Who doesn’t know someone that has been attacked while going out? In public places, the aggression of people under the influence of drugs and alcohol is a serious issue, which is discussed in this podcast. Through the eyes of their two interviewees, Britt and Jesse, the students take you to the moment it all went wrong, and engulf you in the dangers of nightlife through your headphones.

What is one of the most talked about issues in the US? Police violence. The topic has seen a resurgence recently, after the murder of George Floyd. A great deal of media are now concentrating on raising awareness on the matter of police violence, which oftentimes occurs towards African Americans.

However, with our podcast, we focus on taking an objective look at the issue, with an attempt to equally research and interview the perspectives of African Americans as well as the police. The podcast discusses the root causes of police brutality incidents and proposes solutions.

“Stay at home” - this was the advice publicized widely throughout the world when countries around the world took an unprecedented decision to implement countrywide lockdowns. Covid-19 has certainly upended the lives of millions of people around the world and a lot has been discussed in the media. However, one of the lesser discussed topics is that of domestic violence. 

What do you do, when your home is the last place you want to be or should be in? In this episode, the students discuss the societal response to this problem during this pandemic and speak with different stakeholders to suggest possible solutions.

This episode features experts from multiple levels - including a chief inspector, an international coordinator for an NGO, and a scholar: who's also a survivor.

In a new world where regional conflicts are felt everywhere around the globe, there is a need to discuss the most controversial subjects and give a voice to everyone, especially the most vulnerable sections of the society. Therefore, in this episode, four students shine light on the situation of refugees in Greece and The Netherlands. In this episode, they interact with four experts on the topic and compare the situation in the two countries to find out what is happening with this vulnerable group and what kind of national policies are in place.

Blissful Shame refers to those who choose to live behind the veil of ignorance, as well as offenders hiding beneath their wealth and power. This podcast aims to shine a light on Afghan issues that have to this day been somewhat overlooked and undervalued: Sexual abuse, the hidden "bacha bazi" practice, and violence against female inmates in penitentiaries. This episode features interviews with a sociology professor associated with Utrecht University and an employee from the United Nations, who served in Afghanistan themselves.
