SENTENCE PATTERN - A SUMMARY தமிழில்

SENTENCE PATTERN

Sentence

A sentence is not just a string of words which are randomly put together. There is a definable set of constituents that combine to make sentences. We have a set of rules which are used to combine these constituents. The nice fact about the structure of a sentence is that we are able to know who is doing the action and the outcome of the action.

 Basic Elements of a Sentence

Subject (S)

Verb (V)

 Object (0)

Complement (C)

 Adverbial (A)

Subject

The subject shows who or what is doing the action. It is always some form of noun or pronoun.

Verb

The verb shows the action or the state of being.

Object

An object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb in a sentence.

Complement

A complement is a word or word group that completes the predicate in a sentence.

Adjunct

An adjunct is a word, phrase or clause that can be removed from a sentence without making it grammatically incorrect.

The Basic Elements of a Sentence

A sentence has two basic elements: the subject and the predicate.

Subject

The subject is the performer of an action. It is usually at the beginning of a sentence. It may be a noun, a pronoun, a noun phrase, or a noun clause.

Predicate

Predicate can either describe an action that the subject is performing, or a state of being that the subject is experiencing.

Subject-verb agreement

Subject-verb agreement means using the right version of the verb to agree with the subject.

Phrase

A phrase has at least two words and functions as one part of speech.

Noun Phrase

A noun phrase is a group of two or more words headed by a noun that includes modifiers.

Role of the Noun Phrase

A noun phrase plays the role of a noun. A noun phrase can function as a subject, an object, or a complement within a sentence.

Noun phrases consist of a noun and all of its modifiers. Modifiers can include adjectives, articles, participles, or possessive nouns and pronouns.

Subject of a sentence

A sentence has one main subject, which is the subject of the main verb. However, a sentence can include other subjects that are the subjects of other verbs. The subject of a sentence is a noun or a pronoun and all the modifiers that go with it.

Verb

The verb shows the action or the state of being. A transitive verb is one that takes an object. The normal order of words in an English sentence is subject + verb + object. Some verbs are not normally followed by objects. These are called intransitive verbs. Some verbs are followed by adverb participles.

Object

In the traditional sentence pattern, an object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb in a sentence.

Types of objects

There are two types of objects: direct objects and indirect objects.

Direct object

A direct object receives the action of the verb directly.

Indirect object

An indirect object receives the action indirectly, usually through a preposition or a verb phrase.

Complement

A complement is a word or word group that completes the predicate in a sentence.

Adjunct

An adjunct is a word, phrase or clause that can be removed from a sentence without making it grammatically incorrect.

ADJUNCT IN SENTENCE PATTERN

ADJUNCT IN SENTENCE PATTERN

Adjunct

An adjunct is a word, phrase or clause that can be removed from a sentence without making it grammatically incorrect.

Types of adjuncts

The types of adjuncts are adverbial adjuncts, adjectival adjuncts and noun adjuncts.

Why are adjuncts used

Adjuncts are used to provide extra information in a sentence, which adds extra meaning.

An adjunct is usually an adverb or noun that works as an adjective or an adverb.

I play cricket in the morning.

In this sentence, the preposition phrase ‘in the morning’ is working as an adjunct (adverbial adjunct). The sentence is grammatically fine without it: I play cricket.

We hardly attend parties.

Here, the word ‘hardly’ is an adjunct, a regular adverb. It modifies the verb ‘attend’ by talking about its frequency; it tells us how frequently the action takes place.

There is no limit in terms of how many adjuncts you can use in a sentence. Let’s look at an example and see it.

Core sentence: We will call you.

Sentence with multiple adjuncts: We will definitely call you in the evening at your number after the party.

This sentence has 4 adjuncts in it. We could have added more adjuncts to it if we wanted. Here are the adjuncts:

1. Definitely 2. In the evening 3. At your number 4. After the party

Adjunct as a word

An adjunct as single words work as an adverb in a sentence, They are adverbs of frequency, sentence adverbs, adverbs of time, adverbs of place, and adverbs of manner,

Let’s look at some adjuncts as a single word.

Fortunately, I was there to help you.

‘Fortunately’ is the adjunct in the sentence. It is a sentence adverb that’s modifying the entire sentence.

I often call my school friends.

‘Often‘ (an adverb of frequency) is the adjunct in thesentence.

I will throw a party tonight.

Here, ‘tonight’ is the adjunct in the sentence. It is an adverb of time.

John is calling you upstairs.

‘Upstairs’ is the adjunct in the sentence.

You beautifully organized the function.

The adjunct in this sentence is ‘beautifully‘.

Adjunct as a phrase

Prepositional phrases and infinitive phrases are the most common amongst them.

They are talking to the boys in my room.

Here, ‘in my room‘ is the adjunct. It is a prepositional phrase working as an adverb in the sentence.

John is working very hard to take care of his family.

‘To take care of his family‘ is an infinitive phrase working as an adverb. Since it is

nonessential to the sentence, it is termed an adjunct.

Types of adjuncts

positional phrase, Infinitive phrase, Adverb clause, Adjective clause, Participle phrase,

Appositive phrase, Absolute phrase

1. Prepositional phrase

When a prepositional phrase modifies a verb with extra information, it is an adjunct to the

core meaning and grammatical sanctity of the sentence.

Examples:

I was sleeping in my hall last night.

2. Infinitive phrase

Infinitive phrases can also function as adverbs. When they do, they are adjuncts to the sentence.

Monica left her place to achieve her goals.

These infinitive phrases are working as adverbs and are grammatically dispensable.

3. Adverb clause

An adverb clause is a dependent clause that works as an adverb. It is also an adjunct to the sentence.

He owns this company because he worked very hard.

4. Adjective clause

An adjective clause when providing nonessential about the noun it modifies is an adjunct to the sentence.

Delhi, which is my hometown, is the capital of India.

5. Participle phrase

A participle phrase starts with a participle, present, past, or perfect,

and works as an adjective or an adverb in a sentence. 6. Appositive or appositive phrase

An appositive phrase is a noun phrase that sits next to another noun and renames it.

7. Absolute phrase An absolute phrase is a phrase that modifies an independent clause or a complete sentence.

Subject Complements

Subject complements rename or describe the subjects of sentences. They always follow linking verbs.

He is the principal.

In this example, the subject complement ‘principal’ explains the subject ‘he’. It tells what he is.

Shiny is the winner.

In this example, the subject complement ‘winner’ tells what Shiny is.

Object Complements

An object complement always follows the direct object and either renames or describes the direct object.

She named the baby Babu.

The verb is ‘named’.

‘Baby’ is the direct object.

‘Babu’ is the object complement.

Examples

Nouns as object complement

In this sentence, ‘our team leader’ is the object complement (noun phrase) that is renaming the object ‘him’.

The object complement is either a noun or a noun phrase or it can be a noun clause too.

Adjectives as object complement

Talking to Rohini makes me happy.

I am mad about your score.

Here, ‘about your score’ is a prepositional phrase that’s working as an adjective complement.

Infinitive phrase as an adjective complement

When an infinitive phrase functions as an adjective complement, it talks about the reason for the adjective (state).

I am happy to see you again.

Noun clause as an adjective complement

It is evident that she is angry with us.

Here, the noun clause is giving more information about the adjective ‘evident’ and telling us what is evident. It is functioning as a modifier: giving information about an adjective.

Verb Complement

A verb complement is usually an object that comes after a verb and completes its meaning. Adverbial complement

An adverbial complement is an adverb or an adverbial that completes the meaning of a verb.
