The Neuroscience of Habits & How They Shape Us (Patreon Livestream)

The Neuroscience of Habits & How They Shape Us (Patreon Livestream)

In this livestream, I discuss the science of habits. Habits are automatic behaviors formed through repetition, shifting from conscious actions mediated by the frontal cortex to automatic processes controlled by the basal ganglia, with minimal cognitive effort. Initially requiring deliberate thought, actions become habitual through a cue-behavior-reward loop, significantly influenced by dopamine's role in reinforcing behaviors via reward prediction. While habits can be beneficial or detrimental, understanding the neuroscience behind habit formation and the brain's neuroplasticity offers insights into changing behaviors, emphasizing the potential for modifying even ingrained habits through targeted efforts.

This livestream was originally aired live only for Patreon supporters of Sense of Mind. If you'd like to get access to future livestreams as well as exclusive blog posts, go to https://www.patreon.com/senseofmind.

Deciphering Depression: The Role of Serotonin (The Social Brain ep 37)

Deciphering Depression: The Role of Serotonin (The Social Brain ep 37)

The dramatic increase in depression diagnoses has led millions to use antidepressants, based on the theory that a chemical imbalance--namely low serotonin levels--in the brain is to blame. However, recent studies suggest the cause of depression is more complex, challenging the simplicity of this theory. While antidepressants are crucial for many, viewing depression solely as a chemical issue oversimplifies the diverse factors at play, including environmental and personal experiences. This calls for a broader, more nuanced understanding of depression that appreciates the complexity of mental health beyond just biology.

Revealing the Mind: The Neuroscience of Psychedelics (The Social Brain ep 36)

Psychedelics powerfully alter the brain by tapping into the serotonin system. And while these drugs can have lasting negative effects, in clinical studies they’ve been shown to alleviate depression faster than any existing treatment. In this episode, we’ll discuss how psychedelics affect the brain and what the existing literature suggests about their therapeutic potential.

A Balanced Mind: The Default Mode & Other Networks

Have you ever noticed that when you aren’t doing anything specific, you often start thinking about yourself, your past, other people, or maybe your future? That’s your brain’s default mode network in action. And when your attention gets pulled back to the task you’re working on, a whole other set of networks comes online.

In this episode, we’ll explain what these networks do, and why they’re so important for optimizing cognition.

Use THIS Brain Function to Level Up Your Life

Use THIS Brain Function to Level Up Your Life

Cognitive control and flexibility is the key to changing when you feel stuck in unhealthy patterns of behavior. This video explains how this brain function works using a common health challenge you may have faced in the past.

In my experience, one of the most powerful ways of keeping up with your personal growth is to keep learning about your brain, how it works, and how to influence it to help you achieve the goals that matter most to you. You can get a deeper understanding of your brain just by watching videos like this, but it often helps to have written articles that you can easily search, highlight, and reference.

That’s why I provide written versions of all new Sense of Mind videos, complete with a list of peer reviewed sources that I used to write them, only for Patreon supporters of this channel. Plus, I do a monthly livestream only for Patreon supporters of Sense of Mind. So, if you want to continue learning about your brain in order to accelerate your personal development and just help you feel better, I urge you to go to https://www.patreon.com/senseofmind and sign up.

Worry and Peace: Easing The Brain’s Anxiety (The Social Brain ep 32)

Worry and Peace: Easing The Brain’s Anxiety (The Social Brain ep 32)

At first glance, it seems silly to fear things that haven’t happened or may never happen. What is the point of getting worked up over something you may have no control over? Odd as it seems, the truth is, most of us do this on a regular basis. It’s a normal process that occurs in the brain and one you are probably deeply familiar with: anxiety.

In this episode, we’ll see that while not all anxiety is bad, it very often causes us to suffer unnecessarily. We’ll see how this occurs in the brain and how we can take control of this response and live more peaceful lives.

The Brain Basis of Pain and How to Relieve It (Patreon Only ep 10)

The Brain Basis of Pain and How to Relieve It (Patreon Only ep 10)

Pain is a blend of the physical and emotional. Neuroscience shows that when you can control the emotional part, it becomes much easier to manage the physical part. In this video, I'll discuss how pain works in the brain, the placebo effect, the overlap between physical and emotional pain, and some psychological methods for relieving pain.

Are Your Choices Predetermined? Neuroscience + Free Will (The Social Brain ep 31)

What does neuroscience have to say about free will? Is free will in conflict with the laws of physics or observations from neuroscience? What does "free will" even mean? These are ancient philosophical questions, but they have important implications for our daily lives, from how we make choices to how we can improve ourselves. In this episode of The Social Brain, we'll discuss the fascinating science and philosophy of free will from a neuroscientific perspective.

The Neuroscience of Anxiety in One Lesson

The Neuroscience of Anxiety in One Lesson

Anxiety is the fear of things yet to come. It's what happens when the brain predicts a bad outcome and then prepares for it. It's a mechanism by which the brain prepares the body to face potential threats. So anxiety is actually often a good thing. Wait, really? Yes, it's just that, thanks to the complexities of the human brain, it's very easy for good, adaptive anxiety to transform into unhealthy maladaptive anxiety or even an anxiety disorder. In this video, you will:

- Discover how the brain's wiring can turn the tide from adaptive anxiety that sharpens our survival instincts, to maladaptive anxiety that spirals us into a maze of avoidance and dread.

- Dive into the heart of anxiety's neural circuitry, from the vigilant amygdala to the discerning prefrontal cortex, and unveil the groundbreaking strategies poised to reset the anxious brain.

- Explore the cutting-edge fusion of pharmacology, neuromodulation, and virtual realms that are reshaping the battlefield against anxiety disorders, opening doors to a life reclaimed from the clutches of unwarranted fears.

The Science of Value: Decoding The Neuroscience of Decision Making and Neuroeconomics

The Science of Value: Decoding The Neuroscience of Decision Making and Neuroeconomics

Your decisions rule your life. Your brain is the source of your decisions. So, if you can understand the neuroscience of decision making, then you should be able to make better decisions that improve your life in the future. One key component of decision making, as emphasized by the field known as “neuroeconomics,” is the process of valuation, or how your brain determines how much you value something. This video will explain the science of value, helping to decode the complex neuroscience of decision making and neuroeconomics. At the end, I’ll describe 3 neuroscience based strategies for avoiding cognitive biases and making better decisions in the future. #neuroscience #brain #neuroeconomics

The Neuroscience of Empathy: Mimicking the Minds of Others (The Social Brain ep 26)

The Neuroscience of Empathy: Mimicking the Minds of Others (The Social Brain ep 26)

Empathy is powerful. It’s like neural mimicry, a way for our brains to synchronize and understand each other emotionally. This is what makes empathy such a powerful social force binding people together and allowing us to care for others.

But what is empathy? How does empathy work in the brain? What is the difference between cognitive empathy, affective empathy, sympathy, theory of mind and compassion? What happens when someone has no empathy at all? How can you enhance and increase your own empathy?

In this livestream episode of The Social Brain we'll answer all of these questions. Join Andrew Cooper-Sansone (@senseofmindshow) and Taylor Guthrie (@thecellularrepublic9844) as we discuss this fascinating topic!

Us vs Them: The Tribal Brain (The Social Brain ep 22)

Us vs Them: The Tribal Brain (The Social Brain ep 22)

In this episode, we unravel how our brains evolved to foster an "us vs them" mentality, often leading to biases and conflicts in today's interconnected society. We dive into the neuroscience behind these behaviors, the role of hormones, and how different types of 'thems' emerge based on the stereotype content model. This discussion also presents strategies to override these unconscious categorization processes.

Igniting Positive Emotions: The Prefrontal Cortex and Anterior Cingulate Cortex

Igniting Positive Emotions: The Prefrontal Cortex and Anterior Cingulate Cortex

In this video, I explore the neuroscience of positive emotions, the roles of the prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex, and science-based tools to enhance positivity, focus, and mindfulness.

Discover how the left forebrain is associated with positive feelings and how the left prefrontal cortex (PFC), especially the left dorsolateral PFC (dlPFC), springs into action during periods of happiness. Learn about the ways the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) influences your self-concept, life story, and social connections. Understand how brain structures like the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) play a role in positive emotions, attention, and effort evaluation.

The video also provides two evidence-based tools to enhance and increase positive emotions in your daily life. The first tool concerns dealing with failure, and it helps you develop a growth mindset to better handle setbacks and improve future performance. The second tool explains why focusing our attention is so important for overall happiness.

Evidence-Based Happiness: Uncovering the Science of Positive Psychology for a Better Life (The Social Brain ep 16)

Evidence-Based Happiness: Uncovering the Science of Positive Psychology for a Better Life (The Social Brain ep 16)

Probably the most important question we can ask is “how can I be happier?” Some people might find this question overly self-centered, but becoming happier is not only good for us, but everyone we come into contact with as well. Others, while agreeing that individual happiness is important, may nevertheless think it is impossible to be any happier than one’s genes or childhood determine. That is a myth. In fact, over the last fifty years, an entire field of psychological science (and more recently, neuroscience) has been created in order to understand and maximize individual human flourishing—positive psychology.

Support The Social Brain on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thesocialbrain

In this episode, we will focus on some of the science behind positive psychology, but we will spend a lot of the time talking about how you can use this knowledge to create more happiness for yourself. We will also talk about some of the emerging neuroscientific literature, but we will go much deeper into this topic on a future episode.

Rewire Your Brain: How Neuroplasticity Can Transform Your Life (The Social Brain ep. 14)

In this episode, we will explain how neuroplasticity works and how you can use it to improve your life.

--Support The Social Brain on Patreon! www.Patreon.com/thesocialbrain--

Throughout life, you are continually changing, shifting, adapting, learning, and becoming who you are. Another way of saying that is that your mind is continually changing, because you are your mind.

Of course, your brain is the physical substrate of your mind–the brain is what makes you you. So every change you have ever experienced is a result of your brain changing.

Your memories, your sense of who you are, your ability to do even the simplest tasks–all of it is stored as patterns of connections among cells in your brain. And whenever you remember some experience or fact, that is only possible because a certain pattern of neural activity occurs. If the connections weren’t stored as they are, your memories would disappear.

Your personality and sense of self also depend on the details of how the cells of your brain communicate with each other and the fact that you are approximately the same person (psychologically speaking) throughout life is a result of connections among neurons and the resulting patterns of neural activity. Your ability to sense and perceive the world and various objects within it is also the result of these connections and their activity.

The upshot of all of this is that you are malleable. More accurately, your mind is malleable because your brain is malleable. It is not infinitely malleable and none of us are blank slates at birth or any other time, but all of us can become better, happier, smarter versions of ourselves.

The 7 Emotion Circuits: RAGE, FEAR, GRIEF, LUST, CARE, SEEKING, and PLAY (Jaak Panksepp's theory)

The 7 Emotion Circuits: RAGE, FEAR, GRIEF, LUST, CARE, SEEKING, and PLAY (Jaak Panksepp's theory)

In this episode, we'll delve into the fascinating science of emotions and explore the seven basic emotions that are hypothesized by neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp to be produced by separate neural circuits in the brain. According to the Panksepp, each of these emotions has a dedicated system in the subcortical regions of the brains of mammals. By activating these particular regions, a specific and intense emotional experience can be produced. In this video, I explain each of the seven systems, including their basic neuroanatomy and what happens when they're stimulated. From the RAGE system that triggers violent reactions to the PLAY system that's crucial for healthy childhood brain development, we explore the fascinating and complex world of emotions and how they play out in the brain. Support this channel on Patreon: www.patreon.com/senseofmind NOTE: In the episode, I explain that this is a contentious area of neuroscience and Panksepp's perspective has been critiqued by some, including neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett. From Burnout to Bliss: Dopamine, Motivation, and Goals (The Social Brain Episode 12)

From Burnout to Bliss: Dopamine, Motivation, and Goals (The Social Brain Episode 12)

Do you feel exhausted by work or life in general? More specifically, do you lack a feeling of motivation and drive that you used to have? If so, you might be experiencing burnout. Burnout is incredibly common, with a 2018 Gallup poll reporting that 23% of employees in the US say they feel burned out at work all or most of the time (and I would guess this is higher post-Covid).

While motivation naturally ebbs and flows, when you have an ongoing lack of motivation combined with exhaustion, depression, and other negative emotions, it might mean that you are burned out and need to revitalize your motivation. Part of this might entail simple changes to your behaviors and habits. But it might also involve setting goals with the right level of challenge and, most importantly, goals that are deeply important to you.

In this episode, we’ll talk about motivation, including the role of dopamine and related brain systems; intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation; the role of personal autonomy, confidence, and connection with others (Self-Determination Theory); how our emotional state can affect motivation; and the impact of your environment on motivation.
