#23 Why Teams Get Stuck

#23 Why Teams Get Stuck

One of the most frustrating aspects of business is a team that just can't get the job done.

In fact, the annals of business history are littered with companies flush with cash who eventually went broke, because they just couldn't make good stuff anymore.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Unsuccessful teams get stuck in two stages of working together, and those are obstacles that can be worked around. Seth Tower Hurd and I break down how.

We'll continue with pt. 2 of this discussion next week.

#22 (Audio Fixed) Leading a Drastically Changing Industry with Network Radio Director Brian Utter.

In a now infamous memo months before the company went under, Blockbuster reported to their employees why "Netflix wasn't a threat," because A). People like reading the back of the DVD box B). Customers like picking up snacks and C). It's great to run into your neighbors at Blockbuster. Turns out people like pushing one button laying on their couch more than all of that.
However, the story of Amazon "killing" Borders or Netflix "killing" Blockbuster, what most people miss is that Barnes and Noble, Redbox, Family Video and countless local bookstores were not "killed" by technology, but continue to thrive. Technology didn't single-handedly "disrupt" Blockbuster or Borderes out of business, their own poor customer service and above market prices did as well. Brian Utter leads Shine.FM, a radio network covering three states. In 2018, broadcast mediums are in competition with hundreds of other outlets, from podcasts to YouTube videos, for attention...and yet religious broadcasting has seen it's biggest growth from 2010-present. In this episode, we discuss why Brian says "Shine.FM isn't a radio station" as we look at staying vital to your tribe during great technological disruption...and also dive into creating culture when managing in a legacy organization.

#20 Entrepreneurial and Management Pain Points with Guest Nathan R. Jaisingh

#20 Entrepreneurial and Management Pain Points with Guest Nathan R. Jaisingh

This week Nathan R. Jaising joins us on the Consultant and the Millenial. Nathan is President and CEO of Benchmark Psychiatric Services which provides outpatient psychiatric services, counseling, and psychiatric testing.
This weeks episode we adress pain points for a small business owner.
The first being "why do things move so slowly for the owner." Haydn addresses this by encouraging business owners to remember that to the employee that movement is occurring much faster than it is to the CEO. By eliminating leadership perspective vs employee perspective and identifying obvious weak links, one can then begin to identify and release bottlenecks in the system.
We also address the Pain point of unfollowed processes that eat up time and tactics to weed out employees who refuse to follow processes as well as to redirect the employee back to the process and system so the CEO is not solving and becoming the owner of the solution.

#19: Onboard Well, or Lose Great People

Seth has had two difficult onboarding experiences, one where Seth was on his own for nearly three weeks due to the death of his manager's father. In another new position, Seth found himself in a meeting on the first hour of the first day, asking to make decisions on projects he hadn't been introduced to. With the lowest unemployment rate in nearly two decades, if you don't onboard a team member well...someone else is probably going to snatch them up. In this episode, Haydn and Seth look at how Seth is onboarding a new employee...and apply some hard fought wisdom Haydn has earned through working with hundreds of companies.

#17 Project Management for Non-Project-Managers

In this episode we explore the relationship between what it takes to get a project off the ground and why so many projects fail before completion. We walk through the reasons why project management is under utilized by non-project-managers even though it is desperately needed in the smaller details of the day to day.
Plus, the four reasons why ideas fail to be implemented, even when they are the brilliant idea that could save the company. Finally, we discuss entrepreneurship vs “intra-preunership” and how to recognize these work styles and how and where these styles function best as well as the importance of writing plays for the players you actually have on your team.

#16 Instinct vs. Analytical Decision Making (And How to Correct for your Weaknesses)

#16 Instinct vs. Analytical Decision Making (And How to Correct for your Weaknesses)

Last week, Seth called Haydn he was quitting the podcast and shutting down his company. Oh, and Digital Profit Farm, the company Seth started, had just closed out their second best month ever. But, exhausted and frustrated, Seth listened only to his emotions and was ready to quit (a couple of months later, he was fine). On the other end of the extreme, companies like Blockbuster and Borders were so analytical that the leadership saw the hurricane in the distance that would eventually sink the ship, but ran the numbers and became convinced the storm wasn't as big as it was. It was a false belief they held to even as these two massive companies were being torn apart by the waves.
Rather than try to give you a list on how to achieve "perfect balance," this is an episode about learning where you are on the scale, and what to do to compensate for your blind spots.

#14 The Benefits of "Growing Slow" for Both Small & Large Organizations

#14 The Benefits of "Growing Slow" for Both Small & Large Organizations

We are currently experiencing the best economy of the post 9/11 era, which means that companies small and large are often hyper aggressive, trying to increase sales and grow staff as quickly as possible. However, companies that go gangbusters in the best of times often run out of money really quickly in the worst of times, and regret spending money on lavish office accomodations and vanity projects, and growing their teams faster than the organization can handle.
Adam Kail*, a Millennial who built two busineses from the ground up, steps into the co-host seat to discuss "good grow slow," the idea that teams and companies that put strategy behind how fast to grow are the ones who win in the long run.*Haydn is traveling and will be back next week. #13 Everyone Deals with Workplace Politics (Here's What to Do)

It's easy to sit at work and think "this would be so much easier without the office politics." It would be. That job doesn't exist. If you make money in any way, you're going to deal with workplace politics...corporate, family business or nonprofit. The bad news is, there's no "one size fits all" approach to cutting through the clutter of workplace politics. The good news is you don't have to see your career (or your company) stall out due to internal politics. #10 Networking for People Who Hate Networking.

#10 Networking for People Who Hate Networking.

If you've ever felt uncomfortable in a room full of strangers...this is the episode about why you need to walk across the room, and how to connect with people you've never met before without being weird.
Haydn finds random networking to be stressful because he's more comfortable when he has a role (speaker, consultant, etc.) If Tim Ferriss is right, and "your network is your net worth," then Seth's net worth is in the billions. He may be in the first year of managing a new company, but the people he can shoot a text to and get a response, from managers of platium artists to entrepenuers and multi-generational business owners with hundreds of millions of dollars in assets...the advice and rescources he has access to go much further than his current income shows. Much of that network was built off of "random" converesations. This episode is all about how to help those spontaneous conversations happen...because some of them will be life changing. #11 Nonprofits & Family Businesses Are Similar--Here's how to Lead, Thrive and Create Change in Them

#9 Is "Millennial" a Bad Word in Business Now?

A recent (and complicated) trend in business is for Millennials to demand that "the M word" no longer be used, as it's often associated with underperformance and the demand for constant affirmation. But if we don't understand the generational differences of our coworkers, managers and the teams we lead...things just break down more quickly. #7 Management is not the Jr. Varsity Squad to Leadership's Varsity

#7 Management is not the Jr. Varsity Squad to Leadership's Varsity

In most companies, the CEO is paid many multiples of a manager's salary.
Which is why Haydn says we treat leaders (defined as people who's to-do list can't be accomplished in a week) as the varsity squad, with managers (those executing the day-to-day operations) as jr. varsity. In this episode, Seth and Haydn break down: --why to be a manager--what happens when someone moves up in a company without having to do the "blocking and tackling" of management
--what to do if you're good at leadership, but have to handle management first
--the one key behavior shared by almost all great managers

#6: The Hyper Practical Guide to Leadership vs. Management

#6: The Hyper Practical Guide to Leadership vs. Management

It may sound like a bad keynote at a conference you wish you had skipped, but there really is a difference between management and leadership.
Management is all about execution. Leadership is about steering the ship into the future. If you jump straight to leadership and skip management, you're always going to have holes in your stategy and execution.
In this episode, Seth Tower Hurd and I discuss:
--why leaders have a to-do list they can't knock out in a week.
--the vital and symbiotic relationship between visionary leaders and highly detailed process people, and how they get under each others skin.
--why it's so essential to "look around corners" as a leader.
--what to do if you're in a family business where a family member has been promoted to leadership without management (or even regular employee) skills.

#4 Beware of Light Eaters! (Or, the Six Kinds of Change Reaction)

In episode three, we learned about the “change wave.” Like an earthquake in the ocean that creates a tsunami wave, it takes time for a change to “hit” and cause damage, chaos and confusion. Most people are surprised when things are actually harder six months after a major change like new leadership, a major market disruption or other “wave.” In this episode, Haydn and Seth break down the six kind of reactions to change, from people who are waiting to see which way the wind will blow to “light eaters” who are actively out to cause destruction. The most important takeaway from this episode is who you need to be influencing in order to return calm, focus and productivity to the organization.

#3 Why Change is So Hard, and What to Do About It

#3 Why Change is So Hard, and What to Do About It

Often when there's a change in leadership or another significant shift in an organization, there's a wave of excitment from some, and fear from others. Whatever the initial reaction, the other shoe tends to drop, usually about eight or nine months after the shift. Haydn calls this a "change wave." Like an earthquake in the ocean that reults in a tsunami, it takes time for the wave to build up momentum before it hits land and causes damage.
In this episode, Haydn and Seth discuss how to anticipate the change wave, and how to work though the inevitable conflict and loss of productivity that accompany the wave hitting your organization.
