I have been doing a lot of thinking and coaching on leadership. And, I've come to the conclusion that a lot of people are failing at it in our food plants...not because they aren't trying...but because they are trying too hard.

Here's the thing though...leadership is a learned and learnable skill. I just think we've learned the wrong lessons. I think people are making it way too hard and are suffering a LOT as a result.

There are 3 statements that make training effective.
And I am 99% sure you don't know what they are, or why you need to agree with them.
I am also 99% sure that every single corrective action you write has Training as an action.
Let me be the first to tell you...you are doing it wrong.
More training isn't the answer. Better training is.
Truly, you can't talk about Sanitation too in depth here on FSU. Today I talk with Leon Witham, one of my favorite people in food safety. Leon brings an incredible level of dedication and service to our industry and his customers. There is probably almost no question on sanitation he can't answer.
This is the most 2020 thing to talk about.
How we dress and how we protect ourselves and the product at work is a learned and learnable skill.
You just need to DECIDE to learn it.
You need to make the choice that doing PPE and personal hygiene the right way, every single time you do it, is an activity worth doing.
In food manufacturing you need a Customer Complaint program. It's something you've got to think about and document. I see so many of my clients freak out about them that they routinely get caught short in all the things they could learn from them.

Because for your program to be effective...you need to have harder conversations than you are having. You need to dig deeper and GO THERE. Stop pencil whipping this stuff. Use your mistakes to get better.

That overwhelm all comes from a fear that you are going to do it wrong and nothing is going to work and all your efforts will be for nothing.
Stop. Breathe. I get it. I've been there. I was once new at this too.
Listen, you aren't writing the Bible or any other Holy Book. You are writing a food safety plan. It is ok if it isn't right on the first or even 10th try. It won't be. Write it anyway. Write it in fear and loathing and failure. Know that is what you are going to feel when you write a hazard analysis. Plan on it. It is the tax you get to pay for building the business of your dreams.
Branding. Live by it.

But, when you stop buffering, you move to the 50:50 balance that most of life is. You stop using your limited mental energy on the false pleasures buffering provides and instead use it on what drives your life forward and gives it meaning.
What if we could stand in discomfort and make massive progress? People who are willing to stand in discomfort are able to do anything
Imagine: You will stop beating yourself up and telling yourself you’ll get things done, cause you’ll actually get things done
You'll sleep like a baby (though, given how my kids sometimes slept, I think we should change this phrase to you'll sleep like a teenager on a Sunday morning)
You will show up to the world the way you were meant to

Fix it if you didn’t.
