Superman's Not Coming: Erin Brockovich on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher

Today, Shannon spoke with revered environmental activist Erin Brockovich about our nation's water crisis. We assume our water supply is safe because it is tested and treated by municipalities, but that isn't always the case.  Discovering impurities in a municipal water supply, and ultimately ensuring the situation is rectified, requires persistence, research, and commitment from community members. With the goal of educating and empowering communities in the fight for clean water, Erin Brockovich has written Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do About It, which is essentially a step-by-step handbook for local citizens to stand up for themselves and their health. The book is packed with helpful information about water quality and community activism in accessible, easy-to-understand terms.

Marianne Williamson talks to Shannon Fisher about Press Coverage of her Presidential Campaign

This podcast re-posted with permission from the National Press Club. To see the original podcast page for this episode, please go to the NPC website: https://www.press.org/newsroom/presidential-candidate-talks-about-medias-coverage-2024-race The paramount role of the press in presidential elections is to inform the public about the issues and their voting options, and to act as a watchdog over government officials and candidates for public office. When one candidate for a major political party’s nomination is an incumbent president, do the other candidates in the race fade into the background of press coverage? What happens when a challenger comes from outside the political establishment?

One 2024 presidential candidate has been vocal about the lack of mainstream news coverage her campaign has received, and we invited her on to Update-1 to talk about it. Marianne Williamson joins Shannon Fisher to discuss the specific responsibilities of the news media in covering the Democratic Primary race, how Williamson’s candidacy has been handled in the press, and what she thinks needs to change moving forward in terms of how presidential candidates are treated by the media.

Journalists are especially vulnerable to hackers trying to access sensitive, confidential data. With growing threats against press freedom around the world, reporters are frequent targets for both public and private sector snooping. It is more important than ever to protect data, drafts, and sources from prying eyes. In this Update-1 podcast, Dr. Andy Yen, CEO and co-founder of ProtonMail, speaks with NPC Broadcast/Podcast team member Shannon Fisher about cybersecurity for journalists. From Virtual Private Networks (VPN) to self-destructing email, there are many options available to journalists who seek to protect their sources, communication, and work. Start by Believing: Larry Nassar's Crimes, the Institutions that Enabled Him, and the Brave Women Who Stopped a Monster. ESPN's John Barr and Dan Murphy on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher

Start by Believing reveals the win-at-all-costs culture in elite athletics and higher education that enabled a quarter century of heinous crimes. For decades, osteopathic physician Larry Nassar was the go-to doctor for America's Olympians. Within this high-pressure world of competitive gymnastics, Nassar sexually assaulted and exploited hundreds of young girls under the guise of medical treatment.

In Start by Believing, John Barr and Dan Murphy investigate the largest sex abuse scandal to impact the sporting world. Through never-before-released interviews and documents they deconstruct the epic institutional failures and individuals who enabled him. When warnings were raised, self-serving leaders chose to protect their organization over the well-being of young people. Barr and Murphy tell the stories of those who fought back against the dysfunction within their sport to claim a far-from-inevitable victory and helped fuel the #MeToo revolution.

The Right to Language Assistance in Healthcare: Kelly Grzech on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher

Certified Medical Interpreter Kelly Grzech talks to Shannon about the right of all non-English speaking patients to a medical interpreter. A misunderstanding between doctor and patient can have dire, even fatal, consequences, which can be avoided by using a medical interpreter. It doesn't matter if a patient is a citizen, undocumented immigrant, or traveler from abroad; all non-English speaking patients have a right to medical interpretation. Sadly, many undocumented people avoid seeking healthcare for fear of deportation because this right is not widely known. The right to language assistance is guaranteed by the Affordable Care Act, Section 1557, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VI
