Superman's Not Coming: Erin Brockovich on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher
Today, Shannon spoke with revered environmental activist Erin Brockovich about our nation's water crisis. We assume our water supply is safe because it is tested and treated by municipalities, but that isn't always the case.  Discovering impurities in a municipal water supply, and ultimately ensuring the situation is rectified, requires persistence, research, and commitment from community members. With the goal of educating and empowering communities in the fight for clean water, Erin Brockovich has written Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do About It, which is essentially a step-by-step handbook for local citizens to stand up for themselves and their health. The book is packed with helpful information about water quality and community activism in accessible, easy-to-understand terms.  Erin Brockovich will be appearing at the virtual Miami Book Fair November 15-22, 2020. The Right to Language Assistance in Healthcare: Kelly Grzech on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher
Certified Medical Interpreter Kelly Grzech talks to Shannon about the right of all non-English speaking patients to a medical interpreter. A misunderstanding between doctor and patient can have dire, even fatal, consequences, which can be avoided by using a medical interpreter. It doesn't matter if a patient is a citizen, undocumented immigrant, or traveler from abroad; all non-English speaking patients have a right to medical interpretation. Sadly, many undocumented people avoid seeking healthcare for fear of deportation because this right is not widely known. The right to language assistance is guaranteed by the Affordable Care Act, Section 1557, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VI.  Our Lives with Shannon Fisher explores personal, political, and societal perspectives of the American experience. Start by Believing: Larry Nassar's Crimes, the Institutions that Enabled Him, and the Brave Women Who Stopped a Monster. ESPN's John Barr and Dan Murphy on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher
Start by Believing reveals the win-at-all-costs culture in elite athletics and higher education that enabled a quarter century of heinous crimes. For decades, osteopathic physician Larry Nassar was the go-to doctor for America's Olympians. Within this high-pressure world of competitive gymnastics, Nassar sexually assaulted and exploited hundreds of young girls under the guise of medical treatment.  In Start by Believing, John Barr and Dan Murphy investigate the largest sex abuse scandal to impact the sporting world. Through never-before-released interviews and documents they deconstruct the epic institutional failures and individuals who enabled him. When warnings were raised, self-serving leaders chose to protect their organization over the well-being of young people. Barr and Murphy tell the stories of those who fought back against the dysfunction within their sport to claim a far-from-inevitable victory and helped fuel the #MeToo revolution. Learn the Signs of Ovarian Cancer: Esther Windmueller on The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher
This episode of The Authentic Woman is dedicated to the memory of Esther Windmueller, who gave so much of her time and energy in her final years to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.   Ovarian Cancer is difficult to detect and, therefore, has a high mortality rate because it is often not discovered until it has reached a late stage. 22,000 women receive this diagnosis every year – and 14,000 women die of it annually.  Shannon speaks with Esther Windmueller, an ovarian cancer survivor who founded the nonprofit organization Cancer Dancer.  Esther's organization helps women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer understand the disease, learn all of their options and become aware of all of the newest treatments available - as well as joining these women together in a supportive community so they can connect with others who truly understand their journey. We discuss the warning signs of ovarian cancer so our listeners can be informed and recognize a potential problem as early as possible. Through awareness lives can be saved. “The most rewarding part of working with CancerDancer is the feedback from those who say we have really, really helped them through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Hearing this keeps us going.” ~ Esther Windmueller The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher explores personal, political, and societal perspectives of the female experience in America. Beagle Freedom Project: Shannon Keith on Our Lives with Shannon Fisher
Shannon is excited to welcome her guest this week: Shannon Keith, President and Founder of the Beagle Freedom Project (BFP). Keith's organization fights for animal rights on many levels, from fighting for legislation requiring humane treatment of laboratory animals to physically rescuing beagles used in laboratory testing and helping them assimilate into life outside of the lab - and ultimately finding them loving homes. Beagles are the most popular breed for lab use because of their friendly, docile, trusting, forgiving, people-pleasing personalities. Most beagles used in experiments have never seen grass, the sun, or anything outside the walls of a laboratory. They have received little or no affection & are often afraid of people. Beagle Freedom Project is doing some amazing work in bringing joy & love to these animals.   Our Lives with Shannon Fisher explores personal, political, and societal perspectives of the American experience. Kaye talks to Shannon about his book Thomas Paine and the Promise of America. The Ben & Joyce Rosenberg Professor of Democracy and Justice Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Kaye describes this book about Paine, known as the Father of the American Revolution, as his "love letter to America." From Publisher's Weekly: Kaye offers a masterful and eloquent study of the man he reestablishes as the key figure in the American Revolution and the radical politics that followed it...Paine advocated self-government and democracy in the colonies, accused the British of corruption and tyranny, and urged "Americans" to rebel. He championed representative democracy and argued that government should act for the public good. Pat Bertram on The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher
Washington Irving wrote: “There is in every true woman’s heart a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity; but which kindles up, and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.” As I read these words a decade ago, I could see her, a drab woman, defeated by life, dragging herself through her days in the normal world, but in an abnormal world of strife and danger, she would come alive and inspire others. And so Kate Cummings, the hero of my novel A Spark of Heavenly Fire was born. "I am thrilled to be the first guest on Shannon Fisher’s new show, The Authentic Woman. It’s fitting that that this book is being highlighted because Shannon herself is a true woman who embodies the spark of heavenly fire the world so desperately needs." ~ author Pat Bertram Pat's Blog Pat's Facebook The Authentic Woman is a weekly radio show hosted by women's rights leader Shannon Fisher offering perspectives on the female experience in America. Dangers of the Essure Birth Control Device on The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher
Shannon welcomes three women spearheading an effort to raise awareness of the dangers of the permanent birth control device Essure. Her guests are Angie Firmalino, founder the Essure Problems group; Amanda Dykeman, an administrator of the group; and Amanda Rusmisell, the group’s legislative liaison. The Essure Problems group has connected nearly 25,000 women who have had adverse reactions to the device. This show, which aired before the Essure device was removed from the market, highlights the potentially fatal complications of the Essure device so women can make an informed decision about having the device implanted in their fallopian tubes. Backbone Power: Dr. Anne Brown on The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher
Shannon welcomes Dr. Anne Brown, PhD, RN. Washington Press Corps: Digital And Specialized, Jesse Holcomb on Pew Research Group's Study, Shannon Fisher for Update-1
This podcast re-posted with permission from the National Press Club. To see the original podcast page for this episode, please go to the NPC website:  https://www.press.org/news-multimedia/audio/washington-press-corps-becoming-more-digital-and-specialized  NPC member Shannon Fisher interviews the Pew Research Center's Associate Research Director Jesse Holcomb about Pew's just-released report detailing the changing composition of the Washington Press Corps and the source of D.C.-based information that ultimately reaches local newspapers. The report, titled "Today’s Washington Press Corps More Digital, Specialized," describes the changing landscape of journalists in Washington, with niche publications now outnumbering both daily newspapers and wire services. Pew compared stories from D.C.-based correspondents with those of local reporters covering Washington. The results of the study raise questions about the relative cost-effectiveness of using D.C.-based correspondents, as well as the relevance to local readers, when compared to acquiring information from wire services. Update-1 explores the findings of the report and how they might affect the future of the Washington press corps. Jehovah's Witness to iPad Artist: Sylvia DeVoss on The Authentic Woman with Special Guest Host Susan Singer
This week on The Authentic Woman, Guest Host Susan Singer interviews a gifted, talented, self-taught photographer and storyteller, Sylvia DeVoss. Sylvia began life as a Jehovah’s Witness, was kicked out for heresy at age 13, went off the deep end, married, had a child, divorced, spent five months in a mental institution due to a case of mistaken identity, loved women, realized she was gay (yes, in that order), then slowly began her climb back to sanity with the help of friends, art, and her tremendous courage. Sylvia has battled depression that threatened to consume her, but she is now on the other side and celebrating each day. Her artwork conveys her intense love of music, her twin granddaughters, and nature. Her storytelling is the most natural thing about her; it is impossible to talk to Sylvia without getting wound into one of her stories about her fascinating life. This show will take you into the mind of this remarkable woman. Susan Singer is a rabble-rousing artist, activist, writer, and teacher whose primary desire is to make the world a better place by ending violence against women, helping people find their personal path, creating beauty, and spreading creativity. She uses her artwork to reach deep within herself to find her core and to channel her vision of Spirit to inspire, delight, (and perhaps sometimes provoke!) others.   The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher explores personal, political, and societal perspectives of the female experience in America. Over the past thirty years, she has covered such topics as the soul of the city, prayer circles, near death experiences, the rebirth of “feminine spirituality,” post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression, political psychology, and has conducted interviews with scores of pioneering thinkers from Clarissa Pinkola Estes to Robert Jay Lifton.
