She works with business owners to rapidly get from where they are to where they want to be. We originally connected after I spoke at Kettering Executive Network about flourishing as a freelancer during a pandemic.

Now that she's finished her 100 lunches, I wanted her to share the lessons she learned in the process. 71: Ukraine & Russia: To Whom Does The Land Belong? Discussing Geographic Sovereignty With David T. Koyzis Ph.D

Episode Type: Listen to Learn

In this Listen to Learn discussion on the Share Life podcast, I'm speaking with David Koyzis. David holds a PhD in government and international studies from the University of Notre Dame, taught undergraduate political science for thirty years, and is the author of two books and multiple chapters and articles.

In a prior episode of the podcast, David and I discussed his book, Political Visions & Illusions: A Survey and Christian Critique of Contemporary Ideologies (affiliate) where he synthesizes the ideologies (idolatries) of liberalism, conservatism, nationalism, democratism, socialism into a larger meta-story.

In this conversation, we're discussing geographic sovereignty. To whom does the land belong? This is the root question that came to my mind when Russia fully invaded Ukraine in 2022. Also, with Kuwait in the ’90s, and Taiwan now, we have situations with conflicting claims of geography and populaces. In the United States, we have differences in the ownership of American land between settlers and natives, and past conflicts about whether the states are obligated to remain in the union or whether America can break off from Great Britain. This conversation is geared towards helping us make sense of and navigate these conflicts.

70: Living in an After Virtue Emotivist World — With Jesse Nigro

Episode Type: Listen to Learn

In this listen-to-learn episode of the Share Life podcast, I'm speaking with Jesse Nigro about Alasdair Macintyre's suggestion in After Virtue, emotivism, the enlightenment's failures, and whether we should choose Aristotle or Nietzsche.

Jesse is the editor-in-chief at the North American Anglican since 2012. He lives in Omaha, Nebraska with his wife and children where he teaches philosophy at a classical high school. Jesse has a BA in philosophy and an MA in theology.

My reason for asking him on the show resulted from reading his four-part essay series on the North American Anglican site titled Secular stories. After reading five of Alasdair Macintyre's books, I wanted someone who knew Macintyre's work well so that we could discuss these ideas and better make sense of them. We explore these concepts and others in this conversation.

A Quick Note About This Recording

If you're watching on video, you'll notice that Jesse's daughter Isabel is joining us in the conversation. Throughout the recording, you will hear her chiming in from time to time, particularly at the end. We hope you won't mind these mild noises:-)

69: Political Visions & Illusions: A Survey & Christian Critique of Contemporary Ideologies — With Author David T. Koyzis

69: Political Visions & Illusions: A Survey & Christian Critique of Contemporary Ideologies — With Author David T. Koyzis

Episode Type: Book Discussion

In this book discussion on the Share Life podcast, I'm speaking with David Koyzis, author of Political Visions & Illusions: A Survey and Christian Critique of Contemporary Ideologies. David holds a PhD in government and international studies from the University of Notre Dame and taught undergraduate political science for thirty years.

David argues in his book that what we believe about politics matters.  In a unique and overarching way, David synthesizes the ideologies, and what he also calls the idolatries of liberalism, conservatism, nationalism,  democratism, and socialism into a larger meta-story. He explains these ideologies' points of view, where they aim to provide a redemptive human story, and how their redemptive story fails to recognize the deeper problem and achieve their political ambitions.

The book is a fabulous framework for navigating politics while also transcending the emotional pull that comes with political crises or deeply rooted political belief-based discussions. We're often driven by these ideologies without recognizing how they're fueling our point of view and behavior.

Click here to donate to Jason's fund.

---

In July, we — Jason & Madison — are going to Mexico to serve the local community by volunteering with our church team in local children’s homes led by Back2Back Ministries.

Your donation will make our mission possible. Money will not only help us get there, but it also funds the special projects undertaken while we’re there.

This trip is an opportunity for us — you included — to help the impoverished communities of Monterrey Mexico flourish by living the good news we proclaim about Jesus while serving the local community’s children (often facing traumatic recovery and abandonment) in practical life-giving ways.

It’s also a chance for us to grow in the love of God, strengthen our relationship with each other, get outside of our American bubble, and explore our family’s Mexican heritage. By donating, you’re helping to make the world, and this specific part of Mexico, a better place.

For us to make this happen, we need to raise $4,000 dollars —$2,000 each. Will you help?

Even if you only give five dollars, it would make a difference!

To donate, use the links on this page or send a check to 692 Barley Hill Lane, Sugar Hill, Georgia 30518 made payable to global(x).

Whether you are able to financially contribute or not, we’d value your continued prayers.

59: Christian Mindfulness & Meditation — With Sarah Grace Young of Calming Grace

59: Christian Mindfulness & Meditation — With Sarah Grace Young of Calming Grace

Episode Type: Listen to Learn

Thank you for joining this Listen-To-Learn episode of the Share Life Podcast.  I'm joined by Sarah Grace Young, a follower of Jesus, wife, ex-pat, teacher, creative, introvert, and a blogger at CalmingGrace.com; encouraging Christian mindfulness and meditation. She seeks to calm anxious minds by God's grace: and with faith, mindfulness, and journaling.

I'm excited to share this conversation with Sarah because the topic of Christian mindfulness and meditation is critical in our walk with Jesus (as difficult as it can be for us all) and highly relevant in the distracted world we live in. We're also told in scriptures to "take our thoughts captive", to "renew our minds", and to submit our will to Christ but we're not often taught how to do that. This conversation is intended to give us practical insights of which we can apply today.

In the following conversation, we're also going to discuss God, humanity's brokenness, keys to Christian mindfulness and meditation, the differences and similarities between Christian and other practices, the role of scripture, God constructed "safe places", our connection with God, and available tools that we should use or stay away from.

Discussion Topics

Here is a summary of the topics we cover in this conversation.

  • God's presence (contrasted with the state of humanity), the Holy Spirit, the key to Christian meditation/contemplation, and how these relate to prayer and worship.
  • The importance of knowing and meditating on Scripture, allowing God to "renew our minds" according to His Word, and the importance of Christ shaping our interpretation of Scripture.
  • How God's grace and forgiveness create a "safe space" for us to be ourselves with God, how we're to pray honestly and deeply, being open with Him without fear of condemnation, judgment, or shame, and how God's non-judging and loving presence allows us to bring the uncomfortable or difficult things in our hearts and minds to Him for healing.
  • An embodied, incarnational view of mindfulness, living in the present in our physical reality, knowing Christ is present with us, even in every day and the ordinary,
  • How do these practices help us stay connected to God, the source of life and goodness? How do they foster God protecting (proactively) and rectifying us (reactively)?
  • How we can use tools like CBT and mindfulness to have self-awareness and control over how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence each other? What about systems and software, like the app/movement 10 percent better or Calm? What about other religious practices?

58: Jesus' High Priestly Prayer — From the Garden to the Cross

Episode Type: Special Edition

Welcome to another special edition of the Share Life podcast. We're in an ongoing podcast series, as part of the discovery process for my next book project, From The Garden to the Cross: How Jesus' Harrowing Mission Shows Us The Way.

In this final From The Garden to the Cross discussion series, we're rewinding and reflecting on Jesus' Prayer at the end of the Farewell Discourse from John chapter 17.

In this conversation series, we've already discussed Jesus' final message to his disciples before the passion began, Jesus' agonizing prayer in the garden, his middle of the night arrest, Judas' betrayal, a night of scheming to kill Jesus, the three denials by Peter, the death of Judas, Pilot asking Jesus about Truth, Herod directing Jesus to entertain him, Pilate washing his hands of responsibility, Simon carrying Jesus' cross, Jesus forgiving his perpetrators, and Jesus' final finishing moments on the cross.

Now, we're rewinding in time once again, to the moments right before we enter the Garden of Gethsemane to see and reflect on Jesus's intercessory prayer before his sacrificial journey begins. His prayer has three sections; one focused on God's glory, another for the disciples before him, and finally for believers across all time.

57: The Farewell Discourse — From The Garden to the Cross

Episode Type: Special Edition

Welcome to another special edition of the Share Life podcast. We're in an ongoing podcast series, as part of the discovery process for my next book project, From The Garden to the Cross: How Jesus' Harrowing Mission Shows Us The Way.

In this discussion, we're rewinding and reflecting on the Farewell Discourse, which is the final conversation Jesus had with his disciples immediately before his harrowing passion began.

In this conversation series, we've discussed Jesus' agonizing prayer in the gardenhis middle of the night arrest, Judas' betrayala night of scheming to kill Jesus, the three denials by Peterthe death of JudasPilot asking Jesus about TruthHerod directing Jesus to entertain himPilate washing his hands of responsibility, Simon carrying Jesus' cross, Jesus forgiving his perpetrators, and Jesus' final finishing moments on the cross.

Now, we're rewinding in time, to the moments right before we enter the Garden of Gethsemane to see and reflect on what Jesus said before his suffering journey began and his disciples quickly dispersed. Through the Last Supper and the Farewell Discourse, the disciples drank a firehouse of information from Jesus having very little time to process it before all hell broke loose. We read and discuss key passages from each section of the Farewell Discourse (from John 14-16) that encapsulate what's communicated.

Rachel Darnall is a homeschooling mom, sporadic blogger, and author at various Christian media outlets. She's currently writing "Daughters of Sarah," a book on women, liberty & submission. We originally connected on Twitter.

John Lehmberg is a former youth pastor, a business owner (which led to our connection via the local chamber of commerce many years ago), father of four, an enthusiast of both Star Trek and classic VW bugs;  living in the Atlanta area.

Jeff Fambrough is a Son of Christ, a native Georgian, High School and Middle School Football/Basketball Coach at Lanier Christian Academy, enterprise account manager for Indeed, and most importantly, a passionate and intentional leader in his family, community, and church. We originally connected in the business arena as well.
