In episode 22, we meet with Mike McCarthy and his son John to talk about the upcoming Cars Under the Stars movie night at the Malco Summer Drive-In (one of the last remaining four-screen drive-ins in the nation. John recently bought a Corvette that inspired Mike to host a collector car/movie night. Mike's not really a car guy, but he still inspired his son's passion for the automotive life.   

Mike is really into movies and music (his punk band will play at the event before the movies) and knows a TON of Memphis history.    Memphis Rodder, Eddie Wilbanks, is in the fight of his life with stage 4 cancer. Now is the time to give back to a man who has given so much to the automotive community in the Memphis area. Eddie has helped so many from motorcyclists, to drag racers, to circle track racers, to dirt track racers, and hot rodders alike in his 79 years on this planet. Eddie left a successful career a long time ago to pursue his passion for helping his friends in the industry.  Along the way, Eddie developed many major technological breakthroughs that he never received credit for. Instead, he just enjoyed the challenge and kept on welding, fabricating, and machining parts for so many in the Mid-South. If you’ve ever had work performed by Eddie, you know he never asked enough to match his talent. Because he has always worked on his own, Eddie doesn’t have insurance or a large financial cushion to fall back on.  We are setting up this GoFund so that everyone can help Eddie and Betty in this time of need. Eddie is not the type of guy who would ever ask for help, but we MUST help him. The Hot Rod Blues guys managed to corner hot rodder and ten-time Speed Week Hot Rod trophy winner, George Poteet, to talk about his history. Poteet grew up in Mantachie, Mississippi, where he was introduced to his love of cars at nearby Fulton Dragway. He ended up going to college at Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), graduating with a degree in Business. From there, he went on to work for a company developing home water filtration systems that he helped design from a unit found in a trash bin in Canada (you can't make this up!).   His success lead to other successful endeavors, which allowed him to start buying the cars he coveted as a kid. Over the past two decades, Poteet has been one of the most prolific benefactors of hot rod shops across the country. He was the first paying customer of several well-known builders who have gone on to build some of the most iconic custom cars taking some of the most prestigious awards in the car hobby.  Through his love of hot rods and street rods, he remembers looking at the pages of Hot Rod Magazine and wanting to see the Bonneville Speedway. After joining the Memphis Street Rods, Poteet got his first introduction to the Bonneville Salt Flats when his friend Paul Kosma invited him to watch him run. He's had "salt fever" ever since after buying a car on that fateful trip.   If you know anything at all about land speed racing, you'll recognize George Poteet's name as the driver of the Speed Demon, a twin-turbo LS-powered streamliner that has won the Hot Rod trophy an astounding ten times. The trophy is presented to the car with the highest speed at the Bonneville Speed Week in August. Poteet holds numerous land speed records in Speed Demon with a multitude of powerplants. In the process, Poteet has gone over 400 mph (on the ground) than any other person on the planet. The Speed Demon is the fastest piston-powered vehicle on the planet and the team is shooting for 500mph at this year's meet.  Poteet gives the guys a rundown on the whole story of how it all came to be. He is a humble man who is uncomfortable speaking about his accomplishments and rarely does interviews. The Hot Rod Blues crew extends a sincere thank you to Mr. Poteet for sitting down with us and telling us his story. One of our goals with the Hot Rod Blues podcast is to document Memphis hot rodding history, and that cannot be done without knowing more about George Poteet. Hot Rod Blues, Episode 14, BBQ With Phil & Jill Painter

Phil and Jill Painter happened to be passing through Memphis after buying a car, so we jumped

at the chance to have them on the show. They started the Musclecars at the Strip event in Las

Vegas 20 years ago. Phil found a great deal on a 2022 Dodge Challenger 392 Scat Pak in

Nashville, so the two flew in to pick it up and drive it back across the country to Vegas. Shawn

B. got to know the couple after they hired him to photograph their event, so they had to stop and

say hi.

The Painters started the show after showing some cars at the Mopar Nationals. People started

saying they needed a similar event out West, so they took the initiative to start the event. Jill

explains the origin story of the event and how it came to be at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway,

“The Strip.”

Shawn asks them how they’ve been so successful to have a show that has lasted for 20 years

and any advice for our Memphis Legends show on September 2-4. They explain some great

advice (Including the need for great photography ;).

Phil and Jill are from Utah and grew up in the town where Ed Roth lived and is buried, Manti,

Utah. Phil talks about his legacy, the car show that happens every year in his honor. For the

record, the show is the first weekend in June every year. People come from all over the world.

The conversation turns to the passion for cars and how they transcend our small world . . . how

musclecars and 4x4s have made a comeback and how many musicians are tied to the car

culture. It’s a terrific conversation with two passionate car people and they provided some great

insight into the car culture and what it takes to run a successful event that has stood the test of

Hot Rod Blues, Episode 11, Harleywood and The Hebrew Hammer

Episode 10 - The Great Speckled Bird  with HoF Drag Racer, Preston Davis  

On this episode of the Hot Rod Blues Podcast, the guys take the show on the road again to visit Art & Speed Classic Car Gallery in Collierville, Tennessee, to visit with 2016 Drag Racing Hall of Fame inductee, NHRA Division 2 Champion, NSRL driver, Memphis Rodder, and racing legend, Preston Davis. Art & Speed has three of the cars that he piloted for Raymond Godman on consignment, so it made a perfect setting to interview Preston about his years as the driver of the Bo Weevil nitro fuelers back in the day. 

We start off with him describing the first Bo Weevil that he restored in the early-2000s for Godman. The car is significant drag racing history as it was the first car to make an official pass down the track at Indy. The car is restored to the specs as it was when driven back then.  

Mike asks him about a story he heard about him having to push a car over the finish line in Louisiana to win. He said he had to push a car twice to win! Once in the dragster and once in the Funny Car; It’s a hell of a story that he spins of running the nationals and Tulsa in the same weekend after they got their first Crowerglide clutch. He was racing Don Prudhomme who broke on the line. Preston had a single, but the rearend broke 200ft out and he had to push the car to the finish line. 

Shawn asks him about how he got into cars. Preston goes on to tell them about his exploits as a teenager sneaking his parents ‘47 Nash out of the driveway. He got caught racing on the street one time with his mom’s ‘58 Belair and went to juvenile detention. His dad was not too happy. Shawn then asks him how he started driving the Bo Weevil. Preston used to race a ‘50 Mercury with a Chevy engine in it that he used to race. Then, he got a ‘51 Merc with a 327 Chevy in it and was the terror of Summer Avenue. He started driving the Bo Weevil at George Ray’s Wildcat Drag Strip in Paragould, Arkansas, when Joe Monday who owned it at the time asked him to drive it after the original driver, Hugh Walker, got drafted. 

Javi asks about his friend and crew chief, Ray Godman’s street rod. Ray was a paraplegic and drove the car with a cable attached to a dog collar. Preston changes the story to the story of selling the cars sitting there in the showroom and the conversation with Ray about handling getting them sold as a package deal. Mike asks him what the most trouble was he got into while traveling. He tells the story of having to drive to Houma after being up all night thrashing on the car. He had to make a run on alcohol to qualify in time. He qualified 16th (last) at 9.00 seconds, then proceeded to run the fastest E.T. on the first elimination run with 7.01. After they got down to four cars, it started raining, so they split the money. Preston was worn out and Raymond had to drive to the next race in Pheonix City, Alabama. 

 Preston’s next story was about his forced retirement from drag racing because of his age. His doctor wouldn’t clear him for his NHRA physical because of his age, so in 2020, he hung up his racing gloves. He would race again tomorrow if he could, his passion is palpable for the sport of drag racing and it’s easy to see. We wrap with a story of Raymond being shot in Korea and their relationship. They had an on-again/off-again relationship but he loved Raymond like a brother and they were friends until Ray passed away a few years ago.

Hot Rod Blues, Episode 9, Skittles Paint and an Irish Breakfast

The guys make a visit to Shawn Brereton’s home bar for episode 9 of the HRB Podcast. With no special guest, the

guys update everyone on what they’ve been up to since the last time alone. They start out talking about the epic

episode 8 with legendary Memphis Rodders Marshall Robilio and Eddie Wilbanks. After talking about how they

used to roll the start at their drag races, it brings up the subject of import roll racing. Javi mentions an S2000 that

has a Model A body, which brings up Shawn B’s friend who has an LS-swapped S2000 that he made into an

Exocet-type of vehicle.

The guys get to telling stories about garages and the lack thereof. Then the conversation turns to having to

Maguyver things together on the road and how Raymond Godman drove his cars after becoming a paraplegic.

Finally, they start updating us on what they’ve been up to at Steel Rose. Mike tells that the Camaro should be

leaving shortly and they just received an El Camino that they plan to make into a dedicated motorcycle hauler. The

UTE is seeing a lot of work, but still has a way to go seeing there are so many handmade pieces on it.

The handmade aspect turns the conversation to how much things cost and what you are paying for - in any

business. Shawn Y explains his sign business and they start talking about the building that he and Javi have bought

together. They are in the process of getting the building in shape to move in. The building is a Quonset-hut-style

building that was built back in the war era and was once a plastics plant that pressed records for the recording

industry in Memphis. This reminds Shawn B that his car was originally painted in a Q hut and leads him into the

story of the paint jobs the ‘55 has had over the years. Any talk about paint always leads to everyone talking about

different colors to paint cars.

Shawn B talks about his trip to Lone Star Throwdown and how cold and wet it was. He shot 4 trucks for features in

Classic Truck Performance. He also got a call from Mustang Hub to shoot a Mustang up in Nashville. He also got

the green light to shoot another Mustang GT500 in Memphis. He’ll be heading to Las Vegas for Musclecars at the

Strip next! He’s got plenty on his plate.

Lastly, they announce that the Memphis Legends show will benefit Camp Light this year. It is an amazing place that

helps special needs children in Virginia much like the Victory Junction Gang Camp. They finish with a teaser of

episode 10 which will feature the one and only Preston Davis. Stay tuned, it should be epic!

Boiling Down Dynamite with Memphis Rodders Marshall Robilio and Eddie Wilbanks - Episode 7  The boys are back in the shop at Steel Rose Metal Co for episode 7 to talk with two legends of Memphis hot rodding and racing. The special guests are Marshall Robilio and Eddie Wilbanks of the Memphis Rodders, a car club started 75 years ago by a bunch of fun-loving daredevils who put Memphis on the map for drag racing.  

These guys are the true definition of hot rodders. If they didn’t have something, they built it. If it broke, they fixed it right then and there. They started drag racing on an airstrip in Halls, Tennessee, back in the ‘50s until Ray Godman bought a strip of land in Lakeland, Tennessee, and built a proper drag strip. Lakeland International Raceway saw some great match racing back in the day and the guys did really well in ‘55 or ‘56 at the U.S. Nationals. 

Marshall and Eddie give us the scoop on what it was like back then, how they got started, and how they overcame obstacles. It’s amazing to hear these two guys talk about their lives growing up in the Memphis area, racing around the nation, and how the club came to be. Take a journey through some hot-rodding history and hear the tales of the wise old guys who started this crazy hobby that we all love so much. We’re sure to have these guys back. It’s as entertaining as you think it might be!
