35. The Fan's Perspective: What Every Musician Needs to Know
After wrapping up my first show at the legendary Bitter End, a visibly excited man rushed up onto the stage where I and my guitarist still stood. All he wanted was to take a picture of me wearing his sunglasses, a tradition he’d started amongst his favorite indie artists. That person was a guy named Mark McLaughlin, and unbeknownst to me, he had just become my first fan.
Mark bewildered me because he was the polar opposite of what I’d been taught my “fan avatar” would be. As Mark puts it, he is an “old white guy”. That’s how I knew it was time to throw out anything we think we know about who our fans are and what they love about our music.
That’s precisely why I’ve brought him on today’s episode, so you can hear from a fan directly about the questions that we only speculate on like:
What draws them to our music?
What makes them “a fan”?
Do they prefer Spotify or Apple?
…and so much more.
What’s also fun about today’s episode is that in true Mark fashion, he mentions several other artists he’s a fan of, so I’ve gone ahead and created a playlist of them all called “Mark’s Mentions”. Listen here: http://tinyurl.com/marksmentions

34. Should You Sign to an Indie Label?
I'm guilty of it too... I've totally caught myself in a fantasy about how great it would be to sign with an indie label. In that fantasy, you're cared for, held in highest regard, and everyone at the label believes in your vision and knows how to execute it at a scale larger than you're currently capable of.
But things don't always turn out that way, which is what Kelsey Warren of Blak Emoji came on to discuss. In this episode, we're joined by not just Kelsey, but his bandmate Whitney Tai to talk about some ways you can potentially dodge a bad situation. Spoiler alert? Have your contracts reviewed!
On a positive note, we'll also hear about the new music their super duo, BLAKTAI has on the way.

33. How to Get Paid Fairly as a Musician
Every musician (especially their parents) has heard the classic "starving artist" trope, but there's someone on a mission to fix that.
Meet Ryan McCurdy, a multi-hyphenate who amidst being a stellar actor+, musician+ is also a financial educator for artists.
This conversation barely scratched the surface of all there is to discuss when it comes to finance reform from the top down, but we also got to discuss things like whether or not to unionize, how to find the ROI (return on investment) in your spending as a musician, and funny enough - if you stick around until the end of the episode, you'll see that we're both highly in demand.
You're bound to have some questions after listening to this episode, so be sure to contact me at https://www.themillennialmusicianpodcast.com/contact/ so we can invite Ryan back to answer!

32. What's Your Genre? ft. Bootie Brown
No matter where my clients have found themselves on their music career journey, we've always arrived at that question... "...but what's my genre?"
And no matter the answer I give, these musicians are hard pressed to let the world stop turning until they can properly classify themselves and neatly fold up the box they long to fit inside. That's why I decided that if they won't listen to me, maybe they'll listen to a music legend...
Enter Bootie Brown, founding member of the iconic hip-hop group The Pharcyde and a Grammy-nominated artist in his own right. There is no bigger genre bending & flexing visionary that exists than Brown, having performed on stages with acts like Korn & Limp Bizkit or collaborating with The Gorillaz and Tame Impala - the man does it all, and he does it well.
Whether you're an indie musician looking to learn from one of the greats or just a huge fan of Brown and The Pharcyde, this conversation is for you. My endless gratitude for him taking the time to share his wisdom with us, and all the ways he's supported me in my own career.

31. How to Make Music That Changes the World with Maya Azucena
Thanks to our late friend, producer Black Panther, I had heard the sounds of Maya Azucena on their song, "The Half" before I even had the honor of meeting her. Once that changed and I saw her perform, I was floored. She was an absolute force, and I had never seen or heard anyone do what she did on that stage. Since that day, Maya has become my mentor, my boss, and my friend.
When the pandemic began, Maya was living in Turkey and bouncing between countries as she usually did, performing on stages quite literally, far and wide. But in this time that was so dark for so many, Maya called on her ancestors to help her speak her heart. Through listening, she created "I Am Enough".
In this episode, we discover her thought process behind the lyrics, the songs, and the production of her EP, and we even discuss the importance of finding a way to cherish your own gifts.
So many of us battle in silence - it's time to hear Maya's story and let her wisdom transform you for the better, just as it's done for me.

30. Mastering Lasting Impressions From Crowd to Stage
I am absolutely (proudly) dating myself with this reference, but any millennial worth their salt will know that "Cheers" was the bar where everybody knows your name.
In each and every episode, Norm was the character who got acknowledged at the entrance - not once, did he hobble down those stairs and not get noticed and greeted by all the patrons.
Well... meet my friend, Ashton, known as ASHTNMRTN.
Like clockwork, any event I attend, the moment that Ash walks into the room, everyone stops what they're doing to swarm him with aggressive daps & warm hugs. And he always gets on that stage.
But what is it about Ashton that brings about that magnetic appeal? And better yet... can it be learned?
On this episode, I talk with my friend all about what's truly going on when he enters these rooms, and he also spills a whole lotta tea that you won't want to miss.

*This episode is dedicated to Ashton's best friend, Aliscia Brittany Worrell who passed on 12/23/23. May her memory be a blessing.

29. What Should You Do if Your Music Industry Connection is Ghosting You?
Sometimes inexplicably, our relationships shift and a connection we once thought was solid can seemingly disintegrate overnight. Our music industry network is no exception to this rule of human experience, so what should you or even can you do to fix it?
In this episode, we discuss how to remedy a potentially broken industry connection or if it’s even worth trying to. This one is sure to stir up some feelings so reach out to me on Instagram if you have thoughts around it!

26. He Crossed the Line, it's Not Okay
WARNING: ADULT TOPICS
I felt it was important to share what happened to me this week when I decided to take control of my sexual narrative by way of a risque photo shoot and then subsequently sharing the photos online. The photographer ultimately handled the situation and was extremely apologetic that my trust was violated in such a way, but it doesn't change the reality that when women try to present ourselves with a narrative we control, some men think it's an invitation.
I'd love to hear your feedback on this episode since it touches on so many nuances and grey areas. Feel free to DM me on IG or leave a comment here. I look forward to continuing this conversation.

25. How Musicians Can Get on Podcasts with James Lott Jr
As an unsaturated space, musicians are criminally overlooking the opportunity that is being a guest on podcasts. As of December of 2022, there is an estimate of roughly 700K active podcasts in existence while *listenership is expected to exceed 160 million listeners in 2023 (buzzsprout). To put it into perspective, compare to YouTube which has over 51 million channels in 2022. So I decided it was time to bring in an expert, a man who's output will forever exceed countless lifetimes, my friend and the mensch behind JLJ Media, James Lott Jr.
Yes, James & I got to talking about all sorts of things, but I promise this episode will bring you joy and an education.

24. Musicians, Are You Planning (to Fail)?
Queen Brené Brown is such an inspiration to us all. She has taught us about vulnerability, how to work through our shame, and live a joy-filled life. But when I first heard her concept around "Dress Rehearsing Tragedy" I felt like she was yelling at me! And that's why I couldn't help but bring you this message today because you just might need someone to yell at you too. At least you know it's coming with love, just the way Brené makes it.
If you've been trying to soften your blow it's time to take away the mattress underneath you and start fully committing to *possibility* and *ACTION*. It's true, people may not hear your music just yet - but it doesn't mean they never will! Especially if you give it your all so you can evaluate your strategy for the next time.

23. Should You Pay For Press Coverage? with Keefy of Ghost Cult Magazine
Almost reaching 100K visitors each month on their website, Ghost Cult Magazine has just celebrated their 10th year in existence. The Editor-in-Chief, known as "Keefy" has been holding down the fort with respect, passion, integrity, and a healthy dose of anti-bullshit that any self-respecting east-coaster can appreciate. I'm grateful to consider Keefy a friend after connecting with him during the... yes, the pandemilovato. He's taught me so much in such a short time, and each time we get together for a chat, the gems go flying.

22. Don't Make This Networking Mistake in 2023
There is no doubt, a right and wrong way to build your network and subsequently promote your new music. The stakes are high AF when missteps are made because networking can so easily teeter on the verge of seeming desperate, selfish, or worse... spammy. In this episode, learn my unfiltered opinion on people contacting you out of the blue to listen to their new song along with the crimes committed when networking.
Promoting yourself as a musician is absolutely necessary, but there is no reason to cop out and do it the wrong way. I hope this episode inspires you to have more patience, more consideration, and to let your career flourish for the long run and not the quick win.

20. Should You Go on The Voice? with Brianna Ruelas
"You should go be on American Idol!" We've all heard that from someone thinking they're giving us a compliment and a helpful tip. I've been there. And it used to infuriate me. But then I started seeing my so many of friends go on these shows and suddenly their careers were catapulted. So I started asking myself... should I go on one of these shows?

19. Is Your Content Polarizing or Are You Just Being an Asshole?
I was just blocked online by a musician being a schmuck in the name of "increased engagement". You see, when "haters" comment on your post, the comment is believed to increase the activity of the post. But sometimes the people you think are "hating" are really just trying to save you from yourself because you've fallen victim to... *dun dun*
Being an asshole online.
Polarizing content is vital for your audience, but it's important to know where to draw the line, and the difference is in your values system. Listen to the episode to learn more.

18. Trying to Find a "Bones Day" This Winter? You're Not Alone.
Ever since I got back from my last minute trip to Los Angeles, I've been having a hard time staying motivated to do even the most menial tasks. That must mean that once again, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) has come for me and I will be susceptible to it for the next several months.
Also, Noodle just passed which has led to more "No Bones" days than I'd like. It's hard out here, let's talk about it and get comfy. 14. A Fireside Chat with a Prince Fan with Blak Emoji
Pull up a chair for today's episode featuring an enthralling kibitz (chat) with one of my favorite people in existence, Kelsey Warren of Blak Emoji. Kelsey is not just a connoisseur of music's history, but he's practically an NYC legend in his own right. His music spans multiple genres with the linking thread of electronic, hence, coining his own genre called "ECLECTRO", also the title of his most recent album. So happy to consider this guy a friend.
Kelsey has also just been signed to ECR Music Group which will include the releases of his first four remastered reissues, plus some extra tunes to bring on this new chapter of his career. Yay, Kelsey!!!

13. Behind the Music: "Associated", the Story Behind Writing One of My Favorite Songs Yet...
If you've arrived here from my newsletter, welcome! If you have no clue what I'm talking about, DM me on Instagram at @millennialmusicianpod to get on my email list.
"Associated" has always been one of my favorite songs and I remember the moment the lightbulb went on over my head when writing it so many years ago. I'm proud that it's finally been released on my debut EP, "WEIGHTED", a collection of songs I waited too long to put out into the world. "WEIGHTED" is out now everywhere you get your music!

12. Why Musicians Should Get on TikTok with Diana Bidéa
I practically needed to be *pulled away* (you'll see what I did there soon enough) from today's conversation with indie music superstar and TikTok bad ass, Diana Bidéa. I have been a fan of hers ever since I saw her rip shitty men to shreds on one of her famous PSA videos, but once I heard her music, there was no turning back. Diana has been a trailblazer and has inspired me and countless others to keep fighting for our value, to always see our worth, and to never give our power away to schmucks who don't deserve the time of day.
I am forever thankful to Diana for joining us on today's show. Her new single "Pull Away" comes out October, 27th and is available below for pre-save.

11. Shocking Tales From a Professional Publicist with Diane Foy
Today's guest is Diane Foy, a multi-passionate artist coach and creator of the Fans, Media, and Industry Attraction Method. As you'll hear in this episode, Diane has a very unique background that has given her the room to truly stretch her legs in the entertainment industry. What really threw me is she actually said, brace yourself... We don't need a press release!!!? *GASP*
I endlessly appreciate Diane for sharing so many secrets with us on the show that will help the kind of musicians willing to do the work and achieve longevity!

10. I Would Walk 500 Miles, But I Actually Drove About 800 This Week (Dead Ass)
Every solution begets new problems, and the problem I've faced since moving to my beautiful, new apartment is the fact that I have missed my friends. Well, this week provided me the opportunity to see some of them:
Tuesday: "Moulin Rouge" with my AMDA crew
Wednesday: India Shawn at SOB's
Thursday: Mishti & Silver Tooth Cactus at Arlene's Grocery
Friday: AshtnMrtn and Gypsy in "Respect" on Tour
Plus...
Saturday: A wedding gig in Maryland to round out the week.
And all that driving added up to roughly 800 miles (maybe more). Needless to say, I am pooped, but I am feeling recharged, rejuvenated, and loved.

9. How "Golden Girls" Changed One Musician's Life Forever with Aaron Scott
Whether you realize it or not, we all know Aaron Scott. The sAnger (yes, with a capital "A") has practically become as synonymous with the hit TV series, "Golden Girls" as the iconic and eternally cherished, Betty White was. Many people experience online virality from an impromptu phrase or even just a facial expression, but Aaron's voice paired so exquisitely with one of the world's most beloved TV show theme songs, that we can hardly listen to it without attempting to sing the "remix".
Somebody pinch me, because this episode gave me the gift of sharing time with this wonderful soul, and I cannot wait for you to feel as anointed as I now do!

8. Behind the Scenes: How I Got to Work With Janelle Monáe
I still pinch myself when I think back on the miraculous events that went down the week I worked for Janelle frikkn Monáe. I am grateful beyond measure that I have this experience in my life arsenal and even more grateful to the people who were involved, including my *mom*!
You'll also hear about how a comedy legend passed me the mic the other night and I rose to the occasion. I still can't get over that one, whew!

7. How to Date a Fellow Musician Without it All Going to Shit with Calli Graver
"Spicy Calli" as I like to call her, is a renowned, Philly-based jazz-crossover vocalist who is full of charm, pizzazz, and plenty o' piss & vinegar. We had no idea what we were going to discuss on this interview so we just ended up talking about it all! No topic was off the table including the reason why she'll never hear "My Funny Valentine" the same way ever again, how recording an album and having sex are basically the same thing, and how Jodi Benson ("Ariel") changed her life.
I'm so grateful I got to have Calli on the show, and I hope you enjoy her new album as much as so many of us already do!

6. I'm Fat.
I look back on older photos of myself, maybe you have too, where my first thought is, "I would kill to be that size again." But I distinctly remember thinking I was fat even when those photos were taken! As Susan Powter would say, "STOP THE INSANITY!"
In an industry where it seems like a "certain type" gets the advantage, sometimes it helps to hear the stories of people who don't fit the industry norm. Whether you have acne, you don't like your body, or you have a lisp (oh yea, that's me too!), this is the episode to tune into so you at least don't feel alone in your struggle.

5. How to Stop Obsessing Over the Numbers (Follows, Likes, and Plays, Oh My!)
Vanity metrics aren't inherently bad, but what we make them mean about us has gotten a little out of hand, dontchya think? In today's entirely unscripted episode, I let you in on what's happening with your brain when you place all your personal value in the hands of Follows, Likes, Plays, Subscribers, Views, and more. It's time we take back the control of what the numbers actually mean by introducing the two thoughts I share in this episode.

4. The Secret Sauce to Booking Paid Gigs with Rodney Flood
Rodney Flood has toured the US and Europe multiple times with artists like Todd Carey, Matt Simons, and The Reign of Kindo. On this episode, we discover just how many instruments Rodney can play, how to stand out in a crowd (sarcasm) and how to book paying gigs just by being awesome. Rodney is truly a mensch, and I can't wait to hear what he has in store for us next.
It was my honor to have Rodney on as my very first guest, and I hope you fall in love with him as instantly as I did!

3. Does Your Music Career Have an Expiration Date?
Has anyone ever asked you how the "music thing" is going? If you dread seeing your family during the holidays or running into a former high school classmate on the street because you just know they'll ask you that question, this is the episode for you. Brace yourself because in this show, I draw back the curtain on some of my music career journey.
As always, I hope you're loving this podcast so far and that you're finding yourself either inspired, entertained, educated or validated in your experience.

Bonus: How to Avoid Getting Scammed Online
The scarcity mindset behind "Say 'yes' to every opportunity" can sometimes land you in hot water, especially when saying "yes" can make you a victim to the latest online scam. Believe it or not, there are a ton of scams aimed at musicians specifically, and I want you to learn to trust your gut. In this episode, I give you tips based on the latest scams I've witnessed in hopes that you'll listen to your intuition when something seems too good to be true.
I hope this week's episode helps you protect yourself on your journey as an independent musician.

2. Follow This Rule When Batching Content for Social Media
Batching content is like brushing your teeth as a kid - you never want to do it, but it's for your own good. But did you know there are different methods of batching, and you may have yet to find the one that works best for you? In this episode, we'll discuss the different types of batching, why batching sucks, and even the easiest (IMO) platforms for beginner "batchers".
I hope this episode helps you on your music marketing journey and that you continue to tune in each week as we dive into all the tips I have to share.

1. Welcome to the Podcast: Why Millennial Musicians are Built Differently
Welcome to my podcast! After almost 2 years of people warning me about starting a podcast, I felt that at the very least, I could be another person with a vagina and a mic in her hand instead of these other schmucks that are clogging the airwaves. The cherry on top is that I get to help other musicians just like you and me to avoid the possible pitfalls of our careers all while navigating this whole *millennial* thing!
I hope you enjoy this first episode and that you continue to tune in each week as we dive into all the juicy information I have to share.
