Episode 8 - BP Pulse EV expansion in Europe. Modern ticketing in San Francisco. Sam's Club is looking at a more curbside approach. Discussion: Our CEO and Founder Evgeny Klochikhin with BIS Research.

Welcome to our 8th episode of That New Car Sense, our podcast on connected cars, smart cities, IoT, V2X, digital payments, and location technologies. Our guests this month: Evgeny Klochikhin, CEO of Sheeva.AI and Saurabh Bhalerao of BIS Research -- where they will discuss the future of in-vehicle payments and beyond around connected vehicles and services. (Starts at 29:15)

And we’ll talk about the big predictions others have made this month, too. What's on our news radar in this episode:

BP Pulse EV expansion in Europe – This is the growing world of where to put chargers. we know we need a lot more. We know they're not really specifically sited like a gas station, we know the driver needs to hang around for a while. What to do with that time? (1:08)

Modern ticketing in San Francisco – How does modern-day ticketing look in San Francisco? What is the top reason for tickets and how does smart tech play in this area? (7:35)

Sam's Club expanding its distribution centers for a more curbside approach – This is not surprising now to see that omnichannel is here to stay and retailers' infrastructure needs to keep up. We enable curbside and some reporting says curbside is stalling out in adoption, but is it? And either way, there's a number of ways customers want to interact - order online and pickup, remote lockers, etc etc etc (18:45)

Episode 6 - Battery swapping on the rise. MDOT is looking into wireless road charging. Revel sees the grid as a partner. Discussion: How do we use location tech to help the power grid?

Welcome to our 6th episode of That New Car Sense, our podcast on connected cars, smart cities, IoT, V2X, digital payments, and location technologies. Our guest this month: Bonnie Lind, founder of Berkshire Bridge Energy and formerly of SunRun and FirstWind -- where she helped mold utilities' renewables and grid resilience strategies -- will discuss the role of location tech in optimizing EV batteries-as-storage.  (Starts at 26:27)

And we’ll talk about the big headlines this month, too. What's on our news radar in this episode:

Battery swapping on the rise –  Battery swapping is a concept that has already been looked into (and failed) but has recently been getting new life in China. Battery swapping and energy storage open more partnership opportunities with the grid.  (1:12)

MDOT is looking into wireless road charging –  Across the globe discussions are being done on the use of wireless road chargers. Now they are building one in our very own backyard in Michigan. New charging developments like this continue to open and push an EV agenda in the US. (9:40)

Revel sees the grid as a potential partner –  There's been a lot of talk on how the grid plays the part in the charging ecosystem. As the charging infrastructure continues to grow, the grid needs to grow with it. The grid will also need help with power supply as they develop to handle the extra load. The company Revel is ahead of the curve and wants to sell surplus energy back to energy providers during peak power use times. (16:37)

Episode 5 - ZiGGY the autonomous EV charger. US DOT on new EV charging policies. BlackBerry's new digital cockpit. Discussion: How will consumers adapt to interfaces for new in-car services?

Welcome to our 5th episode of That New Car Sense, our podcast on connected cars, smart cities, IoT, V2X, digital payments, and location technologies. Our guest this month: Jack McCauley, legendary founder, inventor, and designer. He's the guy who designed the guitar and drum interfaces for Guitar Hero and taught a whole generation how to jam out (in their imaginations at least.) Then he co-founded Oculus and designed their VR head before selling it to Facebook. He'll talk to us about good hardware design and what it takes to get people to adopt new ways to use their tech, like a car's IVI. (Starts at 21:14)

And we’ll talk about the big headlines this month, too. What's on our news radar in this episode:

ZiGGY the autonomous EV charger –  The company EV Safe Charge has introduced the world to a new charging prototype called ZiGGY. ZiGGY is an autonomous robot that is also an EV Charger that is mobile. The idea is that ZiGGY can save you any parking spot and then charge your vehicle without having to be stationed at a specific spot. Is this convenience the path of the future?  (1:05)

US DOT on new EV charging policies –  The US government's spending bill for building out infrastructure is a huge part of how the EV charging infrastructure will get its funding. With that being said, it is important that they also come out with guidelines for this growing ecosystem that needs to be built. Unbiased EV charging standards for location, speed, and more is what is needed to electrify America.  (7:47)

BlackBerry's new digital cockpit – BlackBerry the phone provider... sorry the intelligent cockpit provider recently released some news of their current endeavors in the market partnering with OEMs in China and more. We will be discussing BlackBerry's shift from a failing mobile provider to getting in front of the connected vehicle transition. (13:47)

Episode 4 - Waymo's driverless delivery. Gas price inflation slowing down foot traffic. Starbucks changing the fueling experience. Discussion: Consumer experience for in-vehicle retail.

Welcome to our 4th episode of That New Car Sense, our podcast on connected cars, smart cities, IoT, V2X, digital payments, and location technologies. Our guest this month: Tim Dolan, Founder and Principal at brand strategy firm Kickframe. Tim is a digital brand strategy veteran who knows location is a critical element in the data-driven customer experience today and in the future. We’ll drill down on what context location can unlock for drivers and consumers in general. (Starts at 26:17)

And we’ll talk about the big headlines this month, too. What's on our news radar in this episode:

Waymo's driverless delivery – Waymo has recently shown more evidence and testing on how their driverless technology will change the curbside delivery experience. As we get closer to level 5 autonomy, it will be important to make sure curbside delivery develops to help the consumer in the way they want the experience to happen.(1:04)

Gas price inflation is slowing down foot traffic – A recent study was conducted to see how the massive uptick in gas prices would affect the foot traffic of restaurants and more. We explore how this is an example of how fast consumer's minds can change and how store owners need to adapt to make their "product most suitable for them. (7:59)

Starbucks changing the fueling experience – Starbucks is building EV charging stations to get you to remember their old mantra of being the “third place” in your life: Home, work, Starbucks. And they know they’ve got a (double espresso) shot grabbing the time of EV drivers, who may need many minutes of down-time to power up their ride. (14:57)

Episode 3 - California's new law on location data. Syracuse snowplows get smarter. Google might need to share data. Discussion: Why is location important to safety, security & better user experiences?

Welcome to our new episode of That New Car Sense, our podcast on connected cars, smart cities, IoT, V2X, digital payments, and location technologies.

We’ll be looking at news this month in the space, then we'll be joined by William Yan, President – Americas with AVSystem. William is an IoT veteran who knows location is a critical element in the data-driven customer experience today and in the future. And its future goes well beyond a way to serve you more ads. In the post-Covid world of an economic rebound, contactless transactions are here to stay for safety and time savings, for example. We’ll drill down on what location context can unlock for drivers and consumers in general.

What's on our news radar in this episode:

(0:07) Introduction

(1:06) California’s new proposed privacy law looks at location – California’s proposed data privacy act is taking aim at location data. As a user, should you be able to toggle in and out of providing location information? Or can this be solved by toggling in and out of some service offerings, like some ads and so on?

(8:07) Syracuse snowplows start talking to their citizens – The City of Syracuse, NY, has launched a program to show where snowplows are operating in real-time, both where they are going and where they have just been. That gives residents not only an expectation of when their street will be cleared but also how drivable the whole city is after a storm event.

(16:04) Google, you have arrived…near the courthouse – The drumbeat of anti-trust warfare has started sounding around Google’s control over their map app’s data and their reluctance to share it with developers. This looks a lot like Apple’s forced retreat from how it structured deals with developers whose products were available in its app store. How will Google react?

And for our discussion:

(24:57) Location-based services are not new; for several years now, many retailers have used location on your phone to bump an ad to your phone. But what about in your car? It’s not enough to know there’s a free coffee waiting for you at that place you’re passing at highway speed. What are the key aspects of how location can help users in real-time? How close is “close enough” in terms of proximity of the user to a place where they could transact? Beyond enabling more ads in the context of where you are in time and space, what other key issues, like safety or ease of use, are enabled by location data?

(50:52) Wrap-up

Episode 2- GM's Xevo marketplace flop. Seimens EV fast-build charger prototype. Tackling EV charging maintenance. Discussion: The expanding EV market ecosystem.

Welcome to our new episode of That New Car Sense, our podcast on connected cars, smart cities, IoT, V2X, digital payments, and location technologies. We’ll be looking at news this month in the space, then we'll be joined by Randy Brown, our director of communications at Sheeva.ai where we'll discuss the "Wild West" of the EV market ecosystem, and how it could play out in the coming years.

What's on our news radar in this episode:

(0:07) Intro

(1:06) GM's Xevo marketplace goes dark - General Motors is sunsetting its first attempt at a connected car marketplace. Powered by Xevo, was the marketplace app GM made available for a subscription on their in-vehicle systems too early?

(9:15) Siemens speeds up the next-gen charger station – No, it may not charge faster, but Siemens is partnering with modular building tech firm Nexii to rapidly put up the next generation of fast chargers. They want to cut the time from sitting to building to expand the charger network quickly.

(19:21) Go with the Flo...with ChargerHelp! - Canadian EV charging station asset managers Flo and teaming up with charger maintenance startup firm ChargerHelp!. These assets need monitoring -- and repairing - in real-time as they will become infrastructure mission-critical assets.

And for our discussion:

(26:09) The EV market is poised to grow even more dramatically in the coming years. 200+ different new EVs will be coming on the market in the next couple of model years. The race is on to have enough locations to charge them all. But are the existing business models effective as this tech goes from early adopter evangelism to middle-market commodity? How will we build and deploy a new charging system and how will the hosts of all its hardware manage it?

Episode 1 - Ferrari goes digital. Our CES ride-along. Data is NOT the new oil. Discussion: Evgeny Klochikhin, CEO, Sheeva.ai, on what “Location CRM” means for the connected car and KYC.

Welcome to our premiere episode of That New Car Sense, our podcast on connected cars, smart cities, IoT, V2X, digital payments, and location technologies.

We’ll be looking at what’s been happening this month in the space, then you’ll hear an interview with Evgeny Klochikhin, CEO of Sheeva.ai, on what “Location CRM” means for the connected car and “knowing your client.”

In news that’s breaking we’ll delve into:

(0:07) Intro

(1:08) Ferrari goes digital – The spiritual home of the sports car is giving into its own digital transformation. While each of the 10,000 cars they make per year is almost hand-built, the automaker announced a c-suite shuffle this month that will bring in two new digital transformation executives. Even the connected car experience in a premier sports car needs ecosystem partners and new infrastructure.

(7:47) Round the track at CES – Despite CES being mostly remote yet again due to Covid, plenty of connected car news was made. Qualcomm announced new partners for their digital chassis. Blackberry bricked their old phones but pivoted to their own digital chassis with Chinese partners. NVIDIA’s Drive Orin autonomous platform had some takers. Stellantis will work with Amazon on in-vehicle software. Bosch looks to autonomous and connected car upside.

(16:15) Data is the new….sand? – Digital is the new oil is the mantra of every digital transformation story in the new “Industry 3.0” era. But is it? You can have too much data, and it’s only worth the insight you can get from it. And data is not fungible; Amazon’s data on all of its users is immensely valuable…to Amazon. But it can’t just be handed over to someone else and mined for gold. So we discuss data isn’t the new oil (a fuel and lubricant to higher digitally fueled growth) and more the new sand (Plentiful and useful but only to the feet that tread on it)

And for our discussion:

(26:03) Evgeny Klochikhin, CEO of Sheeva.ai, on what “Location CRM” means for the connected car and “knowing your client.”
