5.1 Standing up for your beliefs
In season 5 of Life on the Other Side of Should, we're focusing on living life in a time of total ambiguity. How do you manage the stress of living a normal life when when nothing is, quote/unquote, normal. What do you do when everything is up in the air, when the goal posts are constantly moving and when all your old tools and coping mechanisms are be tested to the max? In season 5, episode 1, we focus on the question: How do you stand up for what you believe in when it's hard to know what - or who - to believe? Joining us for the discussion are SheHive board member and Village of Franklin Council member, Pam Hansen, and SheHive Founding member and Michigan State Senator, Rosemary Bayer. As women in the political field, and simply as women, both Pam and Rosemary have vast experience in learning how to stand up for what they believe in in the face of adversity.

4.14 Natural Childbirth
In Season 4 of Life on the Other Side of Should, we are highlighting the collective wisdom of the SheHive. Each week you’ll hear from one of our community members that dared to answer a question we posed on our Facebook group, “What topic could you talk about passionately for 17 1/2 minutes with preparing?” In Episode 14, Cara Rossi joins us to talk about natural childbirth. A freshman at Kalamazoo College, Cara joined a women’s group where reproductive rights and justice were a hot topic of discussion. The conversations focused on abortion and birth control - important subjects, for sure - but not the whole story. Cara also wanted to learn about reproductive rights and justice for women who wanted to give birth. It led her on the start of a long journey to learn more about medicalization of childbirth and how she could do more to support women who wanted to be mothers.

Cara Kennedy is a professional Civil Engineer who has recently undertaken a new hobby of real estate investing. Cara believes that personal finance is something that everyone can learn and “It’s only scary because we don’t talk about it.”

Each week you’ll hear from one of our community members that dared to answer a question we posed on our Facebook group, “What topic could you talk about passionately for 17 1/2 minutes with preparing?” In Episode 12, Angela Zangarola joins us to talk about the Wim Hof Method - a quick hack she discovered after years of research on stress relief. You might know Angela as our financial and divorce expert at the SheHive, but she is also a self-proclaimed "average woman trying to get through daily life." Desperately searching for a way to manage stress, Angela found sanctuary in meditation - but didn’t have enough time for a regular practice. Years of research finally led her to the Wim Hof method - a quick hack to tackle stress.

A former yoga studio manager, Susie, found her life turned upside down when the world went into lockdown in 2020. Out of work and home alone, Susie quickly discovered that if she could “settle the hell down for just a minute,” she could find things all around her that made her feel not only okay, but secure and, ultimately, happy.

Rochelle, a suicide survivor, has lost many friends and family members to suicide. She joins us to talk about the misconceptions of mental health and suicide, and to talk about her personal journey to wellness.

In her past life as a type-A supermom, Lisa dedicated her life to taking care of everyone else - perfectly - except herself, resulting in an ambulance ride and hospital stay where she discovered she had Graves disease. Join us to learn about how Lisa turned her life around and what you can do to be kinder to yourself.

Each week you’ll hear from one of our community members that dared to answer a question we posed on our Facebook group, “What topic could you talk about passionately for 17 1/2 minutes with preparing?” In Episode 8, Lisa Schmidt of Your Law Geek joins us to talk the commercialization of writing and how editing for sales has taken all the creativity out of creative writing. Lisa Schmidt is a writer first and a lawyer second. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing (English) from Michigan State University and was on Law Review at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan. A published author, Lisa also maintains several blogs and writes long-form fiction novels in her spare time. Lisa is never at a loss for words and knows how to make difficult topics easy for the public to understand.

Ivy is an intuitive, mystic, psychic, medium, shaman, and women's soul coach professionally trained in shamanism. At age five she saw her first spirit animal, at age eight had a near-death experience and has connected with the angelic realm since she was a young girl. She is trained in Reiki and Mindfulness-based stress reduction to assist women with stress, anxiety, depression, and pain.

Each week you’ll hear from one of our community members that dared to answer a question we posed on our Facebook group, “What topic could you talk about passionately for 17 1/2 minutes with preparing?”  In Episode 4, Acupuncturist Kat Barber joins us for a passionate 17 1/2 minutes (or so) to talk about how Acupuncture is so important in helping women achieve optimum health and wellness.  While working as an HIV Case Manager in Chicago 15+ years ago, Kat was able to directly witness the transformative impact that the traditional Chinese medicine had on her clients’ quality of life, health and emotional well-being. The discovery led her on a path that had her move across the country - to both coasts - to earn two Master’s degrees and complete a post-graduate, clinical mentorship, and eventually return to Ferndale, Michigan, to launch Kat Barber Acupuncture.
